keeping it coastal might not be a bad idea this weekend. >> not bad at all. it will be hot for the inland areas. and then really cool along the coastline. pretty much the same weather we've had since last weekend. it's still continues into this weekend. so now it's 50 degrees in the north bay. we had low clouds, fog in san francisco. and 60 degrees now in the south bay with a high expected up to 97. 92 in the north bay and still some triple digits with poor air quality in the tri-valley. we'll talk about the weekend ahead and check out a couple of events that's coming up. nike has some delays for both roads and the rails. >> that's right. give the good news first. for b.a.r.t., the rails were having a ten-minute delay and continuing to recover. there was overnight track maintenance. that's not unusual but 20 minutes is longer than we expect there. clearing up. over here in the peninsula, the roads, this is the biggest issue right more. southbound 101 jammed up down from willow all of the way to just shy of embarcadero road.

note,embarcadero, the on-ramp will get you around it. we show on our live camera this continues to be the big backup. overturned box truck blocks two of your lanes at the lane shift. that's a bad combination. we hope to see a tow truck arriving shortly. should be on-screen soon. that overturned box truck no, injuries. that's the better news. back to you. >> thank you, mike. now to breaking news we've been following all morning out of san diego where one officer is dead, another in surgery this morning after a gunman opened fire. we've been working with our sister station in san diego as it gathers new information. here is the latest. the shooting happened about 11:00 last night in the city southcrest area. police are releasing few details that say it happened shortly after the officers conducted a traffic stop . we also know one suspect is in custody but police are still on the hunt for a second suspect and there's been a manhunt under way. as for the officer in surgery he is expected to survive. we will be following this

breaking news story all morning long and of course give you updates as soon as we get them. developing right now in the south bay, san jose police are gathering evidence at the scene of the city's now 29th homicide of the year. the deadly shooting happened late last night not far from downtown san jose. sharon katsuda has been at the scene at willow and sherman streets. sharon, do we know anything at this point about a motive or a suspect? >> reporter: no word yet on those items but basically what we know so far is that they were investigating and combing through white mercedes right here on will douow street. this was an active scene half hour ago. about 20 investigators and police officers combing through this area. and this is willow street along sherman street. police responded to a call last night around 10:00 on a report of a person shot. they discovered an adult male suffering from one gunshot

wound. and they found at the scene one person who died of his wounds. about an hour ago they towed away the truck and the body was taken away from the scene. police are still looking into a motive and have not released any information on suspects. there have been no arrests. so the suspect is still on the loose. back here live, this is the 29th homicide in san jose. a stabbing just took place last sunday and that involved a 22-year-old male victim from oakland. if you have any information that can help you're asked to call the san jose police department. live in san jose, sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." new this morning, one person is dead. four others hospitalized after an early morning crash in the south bay. emergency crews in sunnyvale were called in at 2:00 to the matilda avenue on-ramp to highway 237. when they arrived they found a 24-year-old man dead. police say the car spun out on the highway and larned on its

roof on an echl bankment. the other passengers in the car are being treated for minor injuries. right now we are following breaking news out of the mideast. syrian activists say u.s.-led coalition air strikes targeting a village in northern syria held by the islamic state killed 28 civilians including 7 children. they also say that coalition conducted air strikes in another town in the past 24 hours where there are reports of civilian casualties as well. so far the u.s. military is not commenting on the situation. the democratic national convention comes to a close. hundreds of balloons brought the four-day event to a close followed by a night of celebration. it all followed that historic moment in american politics, hillary clinton expected to be the democratic's party nomination for presidential candidate. the first woman to do so for a major political party. >> and so, my friends, it is with humility, determination, and boundless confidence in

america's promise that i accept your nomination for president of the united states. >> clinton spoke for an hour, mostly taking on donald trump. policy by policy. she laid out a plan for the future that includes all americans working together saying it is a stark contrast from what the trump field is offering. >> he's taken the republican party a long way, from morning in america to midnight in america. he wants us to fear the future and fear each other. >> we'll have much more on the historic night coming up in a live report from philadelphia in just ten minutes. a terrifying ordeal from a young woman in the east bay pepper sprayed in the face and dragged by a man police say was trying to kidnap her. right as he was pulling her into the car, she was saved by

another man who just happened to be at the right place at the right time. san leandro police released this sketch of the man they say tried to kidnap the 23-year-old woman early yesterday morning on washington avenue. she was on her way to work when someone jumped out, maced her, and tried to drag her into his car. at the exact same time, this young man yong-song saw something and did not look right and he knew he had to do something and help. we talked to him by phone exclusively. >> i see the perpetrator trying to pull this girl into his car and while he's macing her and she was very brave. she did the best she could. pulled her ankle off. almost completely in the vehicle. she was just macing me and we were just running around his car. if someone's in danger you got to step up. do anything you can to, you know, diffuse the situation. >> his bravery saved her. now that woman was shaken but

ultimately not seriously injured. the suspect was last seen driving a silver nissan ultima with tinted whip doughs. police say this attack is random. this is a stunning turn of events. a man once convicted of killing chandra levy will soon be released from prison. it was a crime that captivated the country 15 years ago. prosecutors say they're dropping all charges against ingmar guandique. in 2010 they convicted him of murdering levy but that verdict was later overturned. chandra levy was from modesto working in dc as an intern and linked to then congressman gary condit of modesto. they hoped to retry guandique. yesterday's news stunned levy's mother. >> basically emotionally i'm not doing very well. that's why i'm not answering phone calls or anything from my where. it kind of puts you back to the level of grief that you originally had. >> gary condit's attorney

released a statement that said in part, quote, the failure of authorities to bring formal closure to this tragedy after 15 years is very disappointing, but in no way alters the fact that mr. condit was long ago completely exonerated by authorities. laura, later today the man accused of killing sierra lamar will be in court. the trial of torres is slated to begin on monday barring any more delays. today he's scheduled to appear in san jose courtroom for a pretrial hearing. the judge is expected to hear motions on some of the evidence that may or may not be presented during this trial. 15-year-old sierra lamar disappeared in 2012 while on her way to school in morgan hill and her body still has not been found. firefighters are making some real progress finally on that wildfire burning in monterrey county. a story that we've been following live and bringing you coverage of throughout the week. the soberanes fire is 15% contained. we're also learning the fire's prompted the closure of six state parks along the central

coast. at least through august 6th. the fire has now grown to more than 29,000 acres and 41 homes have been destroyed. those are the latest figures. cal fire is also identified the bulldozer operator who died fighting the fire as robert reagan from fresno county. the has been a real struggle. the heat has not helped. >> no, not at all. you could see a lot of smoke in the south bay. let's check your forecast right now with kari. >> and the air quality for the south bay will be a little bit better. but it's still very poor and unhealthy for the east bay due to a shift in the wind. and the peninsula and san francisco as well as the north bay. looking good as far as the air quali quality. but still a "spare the air" alert in effect. high temperatures today reaching to the 90s and even more 100 degrees. in san jose, it will be up to 90 degrees. and in palo alto, 85. 77 in oakland while san francisco we'll see a high of 71 degrees. we'll talk about the cooler coastal temperatures and hot inland temperatures for the weekend. that's coming up. but mike has crashes in palo

alto and in san jose. >> two spots to watch. unusually slow for a friday where we expect to see no problems as far as the traffic flow. look, right here palo alto and right here san jose. concentrating. first zoom in to palo alto and show you a note, if you're local to the area getting up to 101, you know what, take middle field down toward embarcadero because that will get you past all the backup. there's the backup on the sensors starting before willow. let me show you on the live camera jam. very dramatic. lane shift. these folks are carpooling. another reason to carpool. take it right to the scene and squeeze by there and then two regular lanes getting by. there's the crash. we're waiting for a tow truck, chp just gave a shoutout, where's the tow truck that was supposed to be here at 6:00. 280 is clear. southbound, san jose, northbound 101 here, jams up from story just before this shot all of the way up past toward oakland road just shy of 880. a crash that finally moved to the shoulder. that was in lanes long enough to

regarding the zika virus. researches at uc davis says the virus could become more prevalent in california. here's why. up until now it was believed that zika was spread by just two species of mosquito s native brazil but mosquitos coming here to california might have the potential to transmit the virus as well. that type of mosquito is the same one that carries the west nile virus. while we're talking about zika, laura, it certainly remains a concern for the athletes and all the fanses headed to brazil but san francisco start-up is trying to help with this situation. the company kinsa created a smart thermometer that hooks up to your smartphone and stores and remembers your symptoms and can instantly notify doctors. >> a few simple taps you can add in symptom, medication reminder, notes about your illness, in addition to the fever history that you have. >> kinsa is offering its product for free to any athlete or any family member that's headed to

so great more news for ipos. what a t. company does with data is not something they can show you on television but the ceo mike ducan says you can use the selfie stick for the first time to take a selfie of the team on the nasdaq. he's really nervous about it and pressured into it by younger staff staffers. elon musk, the official grand opening of his battery plant in nevada. nbc cameras got a preview on tuesday. some tesla owners will get a tour today as well. and then this looks like a failed liftoff from spacex. i meaning i, it just doesn't go anywhere. it's a static test. spacex testing one of the previously used first stage os an test pad in texas. spacex hopes to save money by sending rockets up, bringing them down, landing them and reusing it. everything went according to plan. looking at maybe september for the first launch or relaunch, i guess, of a rocket by spacex. >> it's remarkable to see the

think, garlic gilroy festival. >> if you haven't been there you've smelled it. >> or you've seen it down 101. always the last weekend of july. but it's also hot. >> last year it was so unbearable. and if you could find a tree or something to get under do that to find some shade. and we'll have to do the same thing again this weekend. as we get a live look outside in san francisco you can't even see the bay bridge. the low clouds have rolled in and it's also bringing in some mist and drizzle in some spots. highs today in san francisco reaching 71 degrees. here's what to expect. all of those clouds will be getting out of here with a nice breeze. and some sunshine later on today. it stays comfortable this weekend with morning clouds and afternoon sunshine. and next week we will still have the 60s along the coast but hot inland temperatures will continue. as we start out this morning we have some mid 50s to mid 60s now

in livermore. san jose is at 60 degrees. as we go through the day planner for oakland we will be at 61 degrees at 8:00. lunchtime temperatures, 71. just perfect. and it will reach into the upper 70s there. a look at all the microclimates and morgan hill today. 96 degrees. redwood city, 82. the castro will be up to 70 degrees. 81 in napa. while a walnut creek is up to 102. pleasant on the will be at 100 degrees today. so, yes, for the gilroy garlic festival it will be in the low to mid 90s. even upper 90s azawi go through the weekend. hot and hazy. remember the sunscreen. the bottled water and the mints. as we go into the next couple of days it will still be hot as this stubborn area of high pressure has been slow to get out of here. as it sinks it warms. the skies are clear so it allows for a lot of sunshine. 90s continue into next week. and while we will have some 90s

inland, san francisco will be in the 60s. feeling very nice there. no major changes. 99 degrees today for the inland valleys. 95 tomorrow. 89 on sunday. i guess just a little bit of an improvement is better than nothing. let's head back over to mike to see if the roads are improving now. >> we like to see improvement. we're looking around most of the bay and friday don't typically need improvement but over on the peninsula and in san jose we've been tracking two crashes. improving the b.a.r.t. delays. now just about on schedule again after early morning lag for the maintenance crews clearing from that area. over here there's the lag for southbound 101. down toward university avenue. look at this. here's middle field. it takes you from university over to embarcadero. over to 101 if that's where you can delay your on-ramp to 101 itself, great. you're clear of that slowdown. you just saw the speeds slowing from orange to red. below 20 miles per hour. live camera shows you, it's crawling. southbound past the on-ramp university. lighter there because folks are staying away from that on-ramp right there is the crash

blocking at least one, possibly two lanes at the lane and the merge and shift. we're still wait for that heavy duty tow truck because that box truck is on its side. the san jose backup starting to improve through oakland road and back up toward northbound 880. that's a smoother flow now. that's the slow section from story up to the scene where the crash is still on the shoulder. look at the rest of the south bay and over through fremont, fine. bay bridge toll plaza has the only other spot with backup. fastrak lanes filled up. cash lane is mid parking lot. that's your lighter friday commute but the metering lights are on. back to you. >> thank you very much. coming up next, another week and more of your consumer problems solved. just two months down and tens and thousands of dollars saved. i'm consumer investigator chris chmura.

6:30, friday morning. good morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. happy you're with us. they call eight microclimate forecast for a reason. you go from the coast to inland spread is enormous. >> it is. i think about last weekend we went to the coast and it was cloudy, it was misting, it was in the 50s. and i was coming out of the south bay where it was hitting in the upper 90s. we're going to have the same thing again today. and it's now 62 degrees already in the tri-valley while the north bay is at 50 degrees as you head out the door. it will be in the triple digits again in the tri-valley while san francisco is at 71 degrees. may have some 60s in some spots along the coastline. we'll talk about that temperature spread and what else to expect this weekend. that's coming up. mike has two problems with this morning's commute. >> that's not just because we have to commute and because we

can't goof off this morning, it's still a workday. we're looking at san jose north 101, still slow. earlier crash in oakland on the side of the road. on the peninsula, southbound 101 jams up through palo alto out of willow, off willow road. look at the live camera. we have this jam-up because of a crash and overturned box truck. flashing lights. the good news is those hidden by the trees i saw this truck arrive on scene. i'm hoping they can quickly right that truck and clear it but we'll wait for the update because they have to assess the situation. you're jammed in 101 but 280 is clear down the peninsula. back to you. >> mike, thank you. update to breaking news in san diego where one police officer is dead and another is in surgery this morning. after multiple gunmen opened fire. that shooting mapped about 11:00 last night in the city southcrest area. police at this point are releasing few details but they say it happened shortly after the officers were conducting a stop. we also know that one suspect is in custody but police are

downtown last night at 10:00. police say when they arrived they found a man suffering from one gunshot wound. he died shortly thereafter. it happened in the area of willow and sherman streets not far from washington elementary school. police are not releasing a lot of details about the shooting or the identity of the victim right now. again, no arrests have been made. pacifica man under arrest accused of numerous sex crimes some of which involved underage boys and the use of date rape drugs. police arrested 31-year-old joseph courtney yesterday. investigation revealed that courtney had an extensive history of criminal sexual behavior. police say that he used websites and smartphone apps to locate his victims and they he had contact with young boys for the purpose of having sex. courtney was booked into the san mateo county jail on multiple charges including sodomy of a unconscious victim and sodomy of drugged victim and child

pornography. a terrifying ordeal for a woman in the east bay. pepper sprayed in the face and dragged by a young man. the woman is safe thanks to a man who just happened to be walking by at the time. "today in the bay's" live in san leandro with reaction from that man and a sketch of the suspect that police want all of us to see. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning. we spoke exclusively with that good samaritan and he tells me he was leaving his apartment when this all happened. he knew something wasn't right and he stepped in. it's goed a thing he did. good samaritan is 23-year-old yong-sungleal. a woman was headed to work in san leandro yesterday morning when a man jumped out and attempted to drag her into his car. here's a good samaritan telling us what happened next. >> you know, pulled her ankle off. almost completely in the vehicle. she was just macing me and running around his car. >> she could have ended up the

next body dumped somewhere else. there's no way to know. >> reporter: here's a sketch of that suspect we've been showing you all morning. described as a male, 25 to 40 years old. last seen wearing a kcollared shirt and stripd. black pants and black shoes. seen driving a silver nissan ultima with tinted windows. if you have any information on this contact san leandro police. live in san leandro, pete suratos, "today in the bay." shooting oakland police sergeant we sergeant. police yesterday morning tracked down the suspect 70 miles away in stockton where they say the man barricaded himself inside a home before being arrested. police say four children were inside that home during the standoff and a gun was recovered inside. oakland police say they're not clear on the motive. however, the suspect did make statements that may be in line with recent anti-police

sentiment that have been expressed in national protests. >> the overall narrative that's going on nationally. >> even though our trying times with our strained relationships with our community and law enforcement throughout the country, the citizens of eke land have stepped up. >> the officer was sitting in her patrol suv after a crash last saturday when someone shot at her. she was not hit by the gunfire but she suffered minor injuries from the crash. it's 6:39 on your friday morning. two men accuse of shooting an armored car guard during a robbery are expected in court for a plea later today. sergei gutsu and eye van morales will appear later this morning. both of them are accused of attacking a armored car guard in windsor two weeks ago. that guard was shot multiple times. thankfully he did survive. both men were found miles away in calistoga after intense manhunt. investigators say the suspects are also connected to two more crimes that happened in southern california. it is 6:39. let's check in with kari. a look at that forecast.

hot this week. >> it will stay hot even as we go into the weekend, sam and laura. starting out with a nice cool temperature in san jose as the sun rise, mostly sunny there as we are now at 60 degrees heading up to 90. and here's what to expect as we go into the day. moderate to poor air quality once again. and another hot one. it will be a few degrees lower this weekend but staying cooler along the coast. next week will be in the 90s inland with san francisco staying in the 60s. i'll detail all of that and we'll look ahead to a few events going on this weekend and how you should dress. that's coming up. heading over to mike now. a new crash in palo alto. >> this is in the backup from the crash i've been reporting southbound 101. that's what this jam is for. the crash just south of university avenue. tow truck is on scene. that's still going on. this one is in the center divide. you see the taxi and the other vehicle there. no major yiy injuries but this the backup. we may see folks running out of gas. watch this. you see willow mark down there

recently and brave enough to go inside and you thought the water felt a little more bearable than normal, you're right. lake tahoe's average surface temperature last year was the warmest ever recorded at 53.3 degrees. that is according to a new report released yesterday by uc davis. sip tests say the lake's water over the past four years has been warming at a pace 15 times its historic average. they say that while the lake may be easier for visitors to swim in, the warmer waters could actually threaten the clarity resulting in the growth of more alg algae, silt and invasive species. 6:44. new criminal charges expected to

be announced today stemming from the water crisis in flint, michigan. in april michigan's attorney general filed charges against three state and city workers he said played a key role in the crisis. he promised more criminal charges would come. the charges will be outlined during a news conference scheduled for this morning. the water crisis in flint started two years ago when corrosive water ate through the city's pipe s leading to lead seeping into the drinking water. new this morning, pope francis meeting with several survivors of the auschwitz death camp during a historic visit in southern poland. one by one the pope stopped, shook their hand and bent over to kiss each elderly survivor on both cheeks. pope francis also took time to speak with those survivors. he then carried a large white candle and placed it at the death wall where prisoners were executed. pope francis becomes the third pontiff to visit the place where nazis killed more than a million people, most of them jews.

rio olympics kick off one week from today. last night this was kind of a dress rehearsal as lit up the sky aborio's famous maracana stadium. details of the ceremony are up der wraps but preparations are coming along well. as for security, total of 85,000 members of the armed forces, military, civil and federal police, all of them are in rio for the summer games. again, the olympics start one week from today. our own jessica aguirre is on her way to brazil right now. she's going to be anchoring coverage with live reports every morning throughout the competition. the ipo gates are back open. a string of successful stock market debuts for silicon valley companies. >> it's been a great run. scott mcgrew with the late sgles the latest is call talend. ipo'ed last night with a stock market debut. talend is from redwood city. there's the button. started trading. the actual stock will start

trading later this morning but as you can see the team enthusiastically opened the nasdaq this morning. talend is not a new company. it's been around ten years. makes software that works with big data. it will open at $18 a share. take you back to the nasdaq. a few minutes before the open. i talked to the guys on the phone and they said the younger people convinced the ceo there to use a selfie stick to take the big company selfie before the open. he thought, well, i'm not so sure. he said he was terrible at taking selfie sticks and wasn't too keen on the idea. it was ant huge fan, they said. well, as you can see, when the big moment came, he totally didn't do it. thrilled his shareholders google did with blockbuster numbers in the latest profit report. in the midst of reporting season. reporting is good. quarterly profit at google up 24%. 21.5 billion in revenue. google plays more than 60,000

distance. as lava hitting the sea can be explosive. the volcano has been active since 1983 but this is the first time in three years lava has actually reached the ocean. fascinating to watch. >> super cool. >> from a distance. >> super hot. >> yeah. we are feeling the flow here on this friday and the flow, appropriately enough, is very hot. >> we need more airflow. >> we do. and it looks like it takes a while before it gets here. we'll have to deal with this high heat for the next several days. at least for the inland areas. along the coast it's nice and comfortable. as we get a live look outside now, sunol at 64 degrees. you already start out with some mild temperatures. but at least a lot of sunshine. this is also where we could see some more of that wildfire smoke from that fire in monterrey county drifting into parts of the east bay. and now it's 58 degrees in palo alto. 56 degrees in napa. and santa rosa is now at 50 degrees. and we also will have another "spare the air" alert day for

the east bay, especially. south bay, some moderate air quality. but with the levels of ozone during the hottest temperatures of the day, it will make it unhealthy to spend a lot of time outdoors. also catch some public transportation if you can. our winds have slightly shifted direction. yesterday the winds were coming up from the south. today it's more southwesterly. so as we go into the day it will stay breezy. but only about 10 to 15 miles an hour. not enough to scour out some of that ozone. and we will see the same thing tomorrow. but our winds flowing a little bit more onshore. and that will keep the coastal areas cool. so it will be up to 70 degrees today in the castro. redwood city, 82 degrees. and 95 in los gatos. as we head toward napa, 81 degrees. oakland, 77. 102 in walnut creek and livermore and dublin. we do have the triple digit temperatures. nice and cool this evening. out at at&t park for the giants game. we will be anywhere from 67 to

64 degrees. high pressure still in control. keeps it hot as we go into the weekend. and also next week as it will be very slow to move. so if you're heading to sonoma county this weekend someplaces to make some plans, it will be in the mid 80s with a lot of sunshine. monterrey bay will be nice and cool. it will be in the upper 60s. and then for santa cruz, some mid 70s there with mostly sunny skies. we'll take another quick look at the forecast coming up. mike still has the crashes on the bay shore freeway. >> two crashes, kari, because one of them here at university southbound 101 in the center divide area. it's out of lane. busine big distraction. they can't move one of the vehic vehicles. heading down toward this, the overturned box truck where the tow truck is there. live look, let's see. no, they still have the two lanes blocked. jammed up here. south of embarcadero, you're okay. bay bridge toll plaza. only the cash -- fastrak lanes if cash lane is looking much lighter than just a few minutes

one unit behind me but earlier this morning several investigators were collecting evidence. an hour ago they towed away the white mercedes that they were combing through all morning. we also saw the body taken away from the scene. police responded to a call last night around 10:00 on a report of a person shot. they discovered an adult male suffering from at least one gunshot wound. he died at the scene. still no word on any suspect or motive. back here live, this is the 29th homicide in san jose so far this year. just a couple days ago, just last sunday actually, there was a deadly stabbing just a couple blocks away. reporting live in san jose, sharon katsuda, "today in the bay." one person is dead, four others hospitalized after early morning crash in the south bay. emergency crews in sunnyvale were called in about 2:00 to mathilda avenue on ramp. they found a 24-year-old man

dead. his car spun out on the highway and landed on its roof in an embankment. other passengers in the car are being treated for minor injuries. let's get a quick check of traffic and weather. and there are most certainly pockets of very high heat out there this weekend, kari. >> yeah, it will still be hot as we get ready for some triple digit tornado watemperatures fo valleys. 54 degrees in san francisco. and 50 degrees in the north bay. heading up into the low to mid 90s for the north and south bay. and 100 degrees in the tri-valley once again. the peninsula will be at 85 degrees. >> all right. we have an overturned box truck in palo alto? >> not a great shot of it but we'll show you the live camera in palo alto. i'm watching the flashing lights off the trees at the bottom there. that's where the overturned box truck. no injuries reported but it's blocking two lanes at the lane shift. horrible place. and at the map, in the backup, just before you get to university there's a crash also, also moved to the right shoulder. now your fast lane is blocked in
