now. a very good monday morning to you. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew. sam brock has the day off. kari does not. >> we have temperatures across the bay area in the upper 50s to low 60s to start out the week. this makes it a little bit easier to get out of bed on a monday morning. we'll a beautiful day. up to 78 in the peninsula. we'll be warm in the tri-valley, but it's not as hot as last week. how about 90 degrees. in san francisco today a high of 68 expected. 82 in the north bay. we'll talk about all of these temperatures and a slight warm upcoming for the middle of the week. that's in a few minutes. heading over to mike noh now let's see where it's slowing down on the roadways. >> we have a pretty typically pattern but slower than usual stretch here. we'll show you hayward. we typically see slowing there, but look a little farther north than we're use. we look at the rest of the bay. this is one slow section from san leandro to a street.

it's about four miles there. recovering from a series of crashes out of the roadway now. more traffic off the castro valley lines. it adds to the congestion through the area. the bay bridge looks standard coming out of the maze across the span things are slower because of a crash blocking one lane. we have at camera over here. it's looking slower than you might like on the bend toward treasure island. the far right lane is blocked by a crash. the bridge crew is on scene. >> thank you very much, mike. an update to breaking news this morning. shattered glass and valuable antiques gone after thieves broke into a san francisco store and then took off. today in the bay has been at daniel stern antiques this morning. you spoke with the store owner a short time ago. >> reporter: hi.

the owner said it's the worst burglary he's seen on this street that happened to him. there's a lot of items that the burglars took. daniel stein says have been a lot of new stores opening here on jackson street. he's had this antique store here since 1992. he said it's the first he's been burglarized with so many items taken. the burglars were clearly in a rush with the alarm going off, even leaving behind a flashlight. here are some of the items they took. sterling candle sticks dating back to 1771, and stein said it's a shame because there were so many set pieces, such as this sterling silver tea set where they only got away with part of the set. now this rare part of history is no longer intact. they also got away with a sterling silver butter dish, and a pitcher from the 1880s. most likely these pieces will be melted and sold and that's why daniel stein said this is such a shame.

back here live, the owner, said very interesting got a call at about 7:30 last night from the alarm company saying there was a break in possibly. he came out here only part of the window was busted. he came back at 1:30 in the morning. the alarm went off then. this is when the break in happened. at about 1:30 this morning. you can see there's vandalism behind me. it also happened within the time frame. police plan to be back to do more investigating. reporting live in san francisco today in the bay. we have breaki ining news i business. tesla motors will buy solarcity for $2.6 billion in an all stock deal to form a one-stop clean energy company. the combined entity will offer consumers solar panels, home batteries, and electric cars all under the tesla brand. the deal will include a go-shop provision that runs through september 14 that allows solarcity to continue to solicit offers from other buyers for a short period of time following

today's signing. also, new this morning a person is hospitalized after a fire at a small strip mall in san jose. it started about 3:00 on willow street. we got off the phone with san jose fire department. at this point the extend of the person's injuries are unknown. it's not clear how much damage there is to the business or businesses around there. arson investigators were brought in to help determine the cause of the fire. a bay area family in mourning teqnika moultrie was visiting austin, texas over the weekend when she was shot and killed in the city's famous entertainment district. she was visiting her fiancée's family as she prepared for her wedding months from now. she was 30 years old. moultrie spent the evening out on austin's sixth street and leaving a doughnut shop when she was shot. her family thinks she was in the wrong place at the wrong time. >> she loved her job. she loved kids. she was a super star basketball

player high school. she loved basketball, softball, she loved her family. she was just a great person. >> three other people were wounded in that shooting. police in austin are looking for a person of interest 24-year-old endicott mccray. lawyers for the man charged in the murder of morgan hill teen say sierra will more will back in court asking to move the trial. two men are facing criminal charges for climbing to the top of the bay bridge. we have a live look at the bridge. the men jumped a railing yesterday along the bike/pedestrian path. they went up a large suspension cable to the top of the eastern tower. the pair ultimately reached the top of the 525 foot tower.

by the time chp officers arrived, the pair were on their way down. each is now facing trespassing charges. a disturbing potentially dangerous discovery on a popular north bay trail. bikers found what appears to be a spike strip near fairfax. the strip, cyclists calling a bobby trap. it had 30 rusty screws on a rubber strip secured to the ground. some say it is an ongoing feud between hikers and bikers. we know the man who died over the weekend. vincent poland fell nearly 100 feet the embankment into the water near the sutros baths. toxicology tests are scheduled for next week. holland was there with a woman who rescuers saved from the climb above the water.

she was not seriously injured. a san hoe family mourning the loss of their two pets killed when a fire ripped through their home. this was yesterday at birch grove drive. the family was not home when the flames broke out. they were running errands. sadly two dogs a mall tease and terrier died in the fire. firefighters able to save two other dogs. >> it's a good feeling to go in there and bring an additional pet out. >> you can see the roof badly burned and areas throughout the house are damaged. firefighters were able to stop the flames before they spread to nearby homes. the cause of the fire is under investigation. a plume of black smoke had people concerned in san jose yesterday afternoon. it started billowing from a fire just after 4:00 in a car lot on commercial street not far from the san jose municipal golf course. firefighters say they had the fire out in about 30 minutes but

not before they received several calls of people wondering where the smoke was coming from. the cause is under investigation. 350 more evacuations have been ordered where the fire continues to burn. the fire burned about 40,000 acres in monterey county since it began 10 days ago. 57 homes have been destroyed. some 2,000 other structures are threatened. also, the fire is responsible for the death of a forest worker whose bulldozers toppled. cbs this morning lists the fire at 80% contained. rugged terrain is making the fight more difficult. that fire burning is contributing, also, to poor air quality across parts of the bay area. take a look at the satellite time lapse showing the smoke moving over the bay area over the past three days. it triggered several spare the air alerts this past week, there's no alert issued today.

temperature with high of 83 degrees. now our air quality will be much better with near-average temperatures, and for the week ahead there a slight boost in temperatures especially for the inland spots for tomorrow as well as wednesday. and by this weekend, it turns that pleasant again with lots of sunshine. we'll take a look ahead in a few minutes. right now as you step out the door in oakland. it's 61 degrees. napa 53 degrees, and san jose at 62. a look at that day planner for oakland. we'll be in the low 60s with early clouds and then we'll start to see that sun coming out right around lunchtime. it will be 67 degrees and low 70s for the afternoon commute. 87 degrees today for a high in loss got tows. the mission district will see a high of 87. so our highs today are pretty much on par for average even as

the high pressure sits to the south of us. it will be ramping up with a weaker on shore flow as we go into next couple of days. and then in time for the weekend an area of low pressure drops into the pacific northwest and gives us a little bit of a relief with highs in the 70s and 80s. we'll see some cooler temperatures also along the coastline. upper 60s slightly above average san francisco. pleasant weather with some morning clouds and afternoon sunshine. and by this weekend once again some lower 60s there. meantime for the inland valleys up to 90 degrees for today. 91 and 93 degrees on wednesday. and by the end of the week, we'll be talking about some lower 80s and mostly sunny skies. overall a nice week ahead. let's head over to mike to see if it looks nice on the roadways. >> most of the roadways are looking nice. we'll put the good news first. we're seeing slower driving over here in livermore.

had a problem with the pleasanton fire reached out aft pleasanton fire department accidentally broke into his son's condo. the fire department was responding to a 9-1-1 call. when they arrived and no one answered the door they broke in. they broke down the wrong door. mario's son had the door replacing costing him more than $2,000. he went to the city of pleasanton to get reimbursed. the city paid him $1360. we contacted the city and they paid the mario's son. they said they paid the depreciated but they took full responsibility and paid the full amount. have a great day. it. uber relies heavily on google's maps so drivers can find you.

clock here. a few seconds after. we're seeing the south bay starting a little build there. tri-valley holds up to a standard flow. hayward the normal commute after the crash earlier. the bay bridge was a big problem. the treasure island crash cleared from inside the tunnel. backing you up so we see recovery as far as the speeds in the span back up out of the main and down the east shore freeway and a look at the bay bridge toll plaza. doesn't look like improvement. it should start moving better over the next few minutes. i'm hoping they'll quickly speed up lights a little bit to release the back up. back to you. >> thank you. at 6:03 -- 31. one person hospitalized after a fire at a strap mall. it started about 3:00 near willow avenue. we spoke with the san jose fire department. at this point the extent of the person's injuries is unknown. it's also not clear how many damage there is to the business

[ gunshots ] the sound of gunfire was caught on the earth cam of that sixth street area just after 2:00 in the morning. if you've been to austin, you've probably been to sixth street. it's the entertainment district. you can see lots of people were out and about in that area.

moultrie's family tells us that teqnika arrived in austin from san carlos on friday where she was visiting her partner's family in austin. the two were planning a wedding celebration for this october. her brother said she spent the day rafting with friends and after a night out she and the others were leaving a doughnut shop when they were. >> she loved her job. she loved kids. she was a super star basketball player at woodside high school. she loved basketball and softball. she loved her family. she was just a great person. >> moultrie said his sister was a school bus driver for the sequoia union high school district. three other people will recover from the gunshot wounds. austin police now have a first-degree murder warrant for 24-year-old endicott mccray. according to the african-american statesman, the paper there, he had several burglary convictions. moultrie's brother and cousin tell nbc bay area they have no

idea who the person is. several family members are on their way to austin. >> thank you. authorities at cal state east bay want to be prepared for anything as they hold an active shooter training program today and tomorrow. the drill will take place at the school library. organizers plan to conduct a practice scenarios and go over proper protocols to ensure public safety officials are prepared. in particular, the school police department. the murder case against marian is scheduled to head to trial this week. knight is accused of running over two men in his suv. one of the men actually died. authorities say the video evidence shows knight's vehicle striking the pair and then quickly driving away from the scene. knight's attorneys are now citing what they say is a mental condition knight developed after being shot and injured at a video music awards party in 2014. san francisco's budget is balanced and ready to be signed. mayor ed lee will put his

signature on the nearly $10 billion budget this afternoon at city hall. the budget causing controversy among the board of supervisors last month since it hinges on an increasing taxes that have to be approved by voters. the increase would add a .75% increase to the city's sales tax. the new budget is counting on $150 million in that tax increase. it's 6:35 dangerous situation in pacifica after a car crashes and comes to rest on a gas meter of a home. it happened early sunday morning in the area of beaumont boulevard. officers acted quickly removing the driver fearing the car might catch fire. the driver was okay but later arrested for driving under the influence. there was no major damage to the home. a scary scene over the

weekend in emerald hills neighborhood in unincorporated redwood city. sheriffs deputies say an suv rolled off the road into the driveway of this home on hillside road. frntd l-- fortunately the drive was not badly hurt. the owner of the home described the crash. >> i heard a loud crash and i heard a couple of people yelling at each other and saying "is he all right?" . that's when i ran out of the house. i saw a couple of people outside and the car was flipped over bind me. >> deputies administered a sobriety test and took the driver into custody. new details around the man who piloted the hot air balloon involved in a deadly crash in texas. authorities say he had a driving while intoxicated charge on his record more than a decade ago in missouri. before alfred nichols moved to texas. he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor

out at 68 degrees. we'll talk about a little bit of a spike in those temperatures heading into the middle of the week. that's coming up in a few minutes. now as we head back to mike another update on what is happening with a few slow spots on the roadways. >> right. a big back up at the berkeley curve. that's unusually heavy at least compared to last week and the week before. the south bay started your northbound commute. so has the build over fremont out of hayward. nothing unusual for the tri-valley. we'll zoom in here. this is the problem spot out of the maze west 580. coming toward the bay bridge toll plaza and slow down on berkeley curve. it's jamming up there. the earlier crash that caused it cleared from the treasure island area. westbound 80 look how quickly it's recovering toward the toll plaza. we'll look at the emoriville camera and traffic is jammed up on the approach. that's the toughest drive to get out of this you stay off the roads or commute the rails. right now there are no delays for the b.a.r.t. system.

the murder of morgan hill teege monday morning. lawyers for the man charged in the murder of morgan hill teenager sierra lamar will be back in court today asking for a delay in his upcoming trial. garcia's trial has been scheduled to start today but lawyers will ask the judge to move it to october. the 15-year-old disappeared in 2012 while on her way to school in morgan hill. her body has never been found. court clerks are protesting for more money here in the bay area. >> that's right. employee's association is going to take the message to the top. they gathered early this morning at the hays mansion. i'm going to step out of the way. you can see a few that gathered. about a dozens or so. they're going to take their message to superior court judges who will be attending a conference here at the hays mansion. they're trying to sway the opinion of the chief justice of california's supreme court who is also here at the conference. clerks and mediators, janitors have been offered a 4.5% raise for the first year and 5% immediately. the clerks say it's not good enough. >> we feel after being without a raise for the past eight years what is being offered by the court is substantial, but our employees need a second-year raise in order to keep up with the pace of the economy here in this area, which is most expensive place almost in the united states. >> reporter: clerks who held information that pickets say they want a 2.5 to 3%

before? >> no. >> i have. >> it's fun. >> with a parachute? >> with a parachute! the skies are smokey from the fires surrounding the bay area. let's check in with kari. a little clearing, though. >> we've seen it throughout the weekend. especially parts the south county. we had smoke drifting through the air from that wild fire farther to the south. today the air quality will be improving a bit. we start out with some clouds this morning with a live look now at san jose. it's 52 degrees with a high today up to 83 degrees. and once again we'll have a little bit better air quality today near average temperatures for the week ahead there will be a light boost in our warmth. for tomorrow as well as wednesday, and this weekend it comes back down a few degrees with some pleasant weather and lots of sunshine. right now in concord it's 58 degrees. palo alto 59. and in san jose 62. morgan hill 57 degrees. and our air quality once again a major issue from the past couple of days.

and it looks like at least we're coming down from unhealthy conditions to moderate in the east bay as well as the south bay. there will be some areas of smoke we'll have to monitor over the next several days as we have not yet put out that fire. in san francisco today it will start out at 56 degrees. low 60s by lunchtime. and a breezy wind into the up 60s for parts of the city. and a look at the microclimate and los gatos and morgan hill 87. 67 in the mission district. in santa rosa expect a high of 82 and 86 today in danville and walnut creek will be up to 87 degrees. as high pressure continues to slowly move across the region, we'll have some minor changes in our forecast through the week with some warming tomorrow as well as on wednesday. and then by the weekend our heat will break once again. as this area of low pressure moves in from the north. temperatures back off. a stronger on shore flow bringing in the cool air from

the ocean. so highs today a slightly above average in san francisco into the upper 60s. low 60s by the weekend. and for the inland valley 90s for the next couple of days. the warmest day of the week will be on wednesday. you'll see how the temperatures go down in time for the end of the week into the weekend. it looks like a nice one. let's head to mike for an update on what is happening with the morning's commute. >> early crashes in san leandro set off an odd pattern. the south bay starting to creep in as far as the volume. we are going too zoom into issues. highway 84 westbound. we know we have the construction in the area and that may be an issue this morning. 680 through sonoma not an issue. hayward slowed as well as fremont for southbound 880 across the san mateo in the

westbound direction. the peninsula very light now. the bay bridge toll plaza season an issue as well as the approach. a slower drive on the approach. we had the back up. look at the camera at the toll plaza. we have the back up filling in all lanes. the back upstarting to move better now than 15 minutes ago. a little recovery over here. san mateo bridge good things from hayward. we're seeing more traffic at 92 which means a slower drive. draymond green exposed. the way yowarriors and team usa star making headlines for the wrong reasons. he posted a photo of his private parts for the entire world to see yesterday. when he realized what he done. green removed post and tweeted his account had been hacked but backtracked and admitted he was to blame he told reporters it was meant to be a private message and he said, quote, "it

"today in the bay's" sharon is in san francisco at the scene of an early-morning smash-and-grab burglary at an antique store. >> reporter: i spoke with the owner this morning, and he told me definitely that rare items were taken this morning. daniel stein of stein antiques said there's been a lot of new

stores opening up on jackson street. he had the antique store here since 1992. he said it's the first time he's been burglarized with so many items taken. the burglars left behind a flashlight, clearly in a rush with the alarm going off. leer are the items they took. sterling candle sticks dating back to 1771, and stein said it's shame because there were so many sets of history such a sterling silver tea set. the burglars took off with part of the set. they got away with a sterling silver butter dish and pitcher from the 1800s. stein said the burglars will probably sell these items and melt them down back here live you can see grafee tee went up here. at 7:30 the owner said the alarm company called him saying there might be a problem at his store. he came out and only saw part of his window busted in. he went home and then at 1:30 he received another call saying the
