wife stayed silent on stage. >> maybe she wasn't allowed to have anything to say. you tell me. plenty of people have written that. >> reporter: ghazala khan said she was asked to speak but could not overcome by grief adding in a "the washington post" op-ed, trump doesn't know what the word sacrifice means. >> i think i made a lot of sacrifices. i work very, very hard. >> reporter: trump called humayun khan a hero and tried to turn the conversation instead to terrorism. democrats aren't letting up. >> to have trump do what he did, i don't know where the bottom is. >> reporter: hillary clinton's criticism echoed by former republican rivals. jeb bush calling trump's comments disrespectful but while mitch mcconnell and paul ryan are releasing statements supporting the khans, they aren't mentioning trump's name. >> the lapse of moral courage will hold them and remain burdened on their souls. >> reporter: the controversy now

putting trump's temporary proposed muslim ban back in the spotlight even as his team has tried to walk it back in recent weeks. now with visiting khan's grave site in arlington, his father's speech still resonating. >> have you read the united states constitution? >> reporter: the $1 pocket constitution a bestseller on amazon. and more reaction this morning with senator lindsey graham telling nbc news unacceptable doesn't even begin to describe trump's comments but remember similar controversies have not hurt the gop nominee in the past. remember what he said about john mccain possibly not being a war hero? in the meantime, savannah, we're getting a look at a new post-convention poll showing hillary clinton getting a bit of a bounce after philadelphia up four points now and total up seven over donald trump. savannah? >> hallie jackson, thank you. khizr and ghazala khan are with us this morning.

>> mr. khan, trump said that you viciously attacked him and that he had to respond. what do you think of that? >> that proves the point that showing him the constitution, the first amendment, freedom of speech, this candidate amazes me. his ignorance. he can get up and malign the entire nation, the religions, the communities, the minorities, the judges, and yet a private citizen in this political process in his candidacy for stewardship of this country i cannot say what i feel? that proves the point. he has not read the constitution of this country. had he read that, his behavior would be different. >> finally, i know that speaker ryan and majority leader mcconnell have praised your son as a hero now and reiterated they do not support the

so-called muslim ban, does that go far enough for you? are you satisfied with their response? >> that is -- i'm grateful. they are as patriotic as we are or as anyone else is, both senator mcconnell, speaker ryan, but i tell you, there had been outpouring support and rebuke of trump. i have e-mail inbox full of assurances that i am right, we are right, and he needs to mend his way. i receive from a prominent republican a written e-mail saying this would be first time that he will not vote. similar e-mails had been pouring in stating that they are

republican all of their lives and yet in this election for the office of president, they will not vote for this candidate. this candidate has not qualified in their judgment to be deserving of their support. >> mr. and mrs. khan, thank you so much for your time this morning. again, thank you for the service of your son. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> thank you very much. another major story this morning, floodwaters ripping a path of death and destruction in a city in baltimore, maryland. it will be a difficult clean up. we have tammi with the latest. good morning, tammy leitner. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the residents of howard county say they've never seen anything like this. the worst flash flood to come through this area in more than half of a century. a state of emergency has been declared and that's because this

area got pummeled with 6 inches of rain in less than two hours. people desperately clinging to their cars when flash floodwaters went through the center of town catching many by surprise. residents watching helplessly as their town gets destroyed. two people reported dead in separate incidents swept away by rushing water. over 100 rescues. this video shows residents creating a human chain to save a woman trapped in her car. the floodwaters receded quickly but the damage in the town of ellicott city, grim. cars stacked on top of one another. streets ripped apart. >> it looks like a set from a disaster movie. >> reporter: businesses on main street completely destroyed. >> it's devastating to see the businesses that are totally gone. totally gone. i don't even know where to start. >> reporter: the governor

declaring a state of emergency. >> i just want to come and hug people and let them know that we're all going to be with them and help them get back to normal. >> reporter: this historic town was built in 1772 and it was built on top of a river that runs through the center of town. that river rose 14 feet in just 90 minutes. savannah? >> all right. tammy, thank you so much. let's turn to dylan in for al this morning. it seems like it caught people off guard. >> it did. the rain came down so heavily. in two hours, 6 inches of rain in ellicott city. that's the same situation we're seeing this morning. we do still have flash flood watches across southern new jersey and pennsylvania because of this round of heavier rain right here. it's going to exacerbate flooding that occurred. if you get a heavy pocket of rain, that could lead to more flooding. we'll see showers and thunderstorms continue to develop through this morning and more storms later this afternoon and evening.

the flash flood watches are in effect this morning. through st. louis, stronger storms this morning occurring for the last several hours and more of that heavier rain could fall across the rest of missouri. it's all because of this frontal system. we're waiting for it to make its way offshore. more scattered showers and storms firing up later this afternoon and some of those heavier pockets of rain could cause another one to two inches of rain and if they occur where other heavy rain occurred, that could lead to more flooding. >> dylan, we'll check in with you in a minute. from flooding to fires now. crews are struggling overnight to protect homes from a wildfire that started sunday in the canyons of central montana. it quickly grew to at least 2,000 acres. 500 homes are under evacuation orders now. the red cross has set up emergency shelters. also this morning, the fight against zika is taking on new urgency in the wake of the recent cases in florida that authorities say are most likely from local mosquitos.

nbc's sarah dallof is in miami with this story. good morning. >> reporter: as senate democrats push for congress to end its recess and approve emergency zika funding, officials in miami are wasting no time focusing on the possibility of more undiagnosed cases. a door to door battle against zika being waged miami. health officials collecting urine samples from residents in a one square mile north of the city's downtown where four people were believed to be infected by mosquitos. >> boots on the ground is the only way you deal with mosquito control illnesses. >> reporter: the cdc is expecting more cases to pop up. the question is where? the mosquitos suspected of carrying zika have been found across large section of the u.s. scientists looking at a number of factors have identified cities most at risk including miami, new orleans, savannah,

charleston and mobile, alabama. >> it's hard to deal with. as a parent, it's concerning. >> i think there are a lot more things i should be worrying about. >> reporter: other than zika? >> for sure. like crime. >> reporter: crowds are not staying away from miami's popular art district which is considered an active transmission area for zika. local business owners already in the low season slump are grateful. >> only store we have. >> reporter: expectant mothers are taking precautions. >> if i was in my first trimester, yes, i would stay home the whole time. >> reporter: and tests from the door-to-door samples could be back as early as today providing a clearer picture of what health officials are up against and the risks residents face. savannah? >> thank you. coming up, we'll show you how drones are now being used to keep zika carrying mosquitos at bay. let's go to matt on copacabana

complaints including water running down walls. the australian team tweeting as they were evacuated for a fire, one robbed and posting pictures of unfinished venues. and along rio's stunning coastline, the polluted waters needed last-minute cleaning. authorities even finding dead bodies in recent weeks. olympic organizers facing security challenges from the city's rising murder rate to rough seas as high tides and big waves on saturday were to blame for the partial collapse of the marina, the main sailing venue of the games. the ioc saying it's confident damage will not affect the preparations for the sailing competition, a 25-person work crew now hoping to finish repairs by friday. they built a dune to stop copacabana's waves from flooding beach volleyball while the military is already standing guard. construction workers are racing to be ready. but close by protesters.

brazil in the grip of a severe recession and political crisis. >> we have a lot of people without jobs. >> reporter: in may, its president rousef was suspended from office accused in a scandal. brazil's new leader accused, too. ironically, fears over zika are fading. the world health organization now calling the risk for infection low and manageable. the international olympic committee u.s. representative remaining confident. >> i'm certain they will be ready. they are ready. i was at olympic village. athletes were there using the facilities. >> reporter: excitement is building. u.s. gymnast simone biles tweeting, "the dream is real." one olympic spokesperson says this always happens. there are fears until the opening and it's forgotten as

right into copacabana. this entire stretch is copacabana beach. beach volleyball venue about a quarter mile straight down the beach behind me. tough for you to see. beyond the buildings in the distance, that's where you find eponima beach. take a look. taking selfies. that's hoda. >> hoda! >> the reason she's out there, she saw that brazilian navy ship. it's so embarrassing. she's yelling, sailors, and they kept going. >> our little ambassador. oh, my goodness. already making friends i see. all right. >> now you know what i'm in for for the next couple weeks. >> we'll check back in with you guys in just a moment. let's look at the headlines today. a new poll in the presidential race shows a post-convention bounce for hillary clinton.

she now leads 46% to 39%. that's a nationwide poll. last week that same poll showed the race tied following the republican convention. at least two deaths are being blamed on devastating flash flooding in ellicott city, maryland. a half foot of rain fell in just a few hours over the weekend. almost every home and business on main street was damaged. one official calling that flooding the worst he's seen in 50 years. and storms caused problems and delays all weekend at the pga championship in springfield, new jersey. golfers had to play the final two rounds on sunday. in the end, jimmy walker claimed his first ever major by just one stroke. also this morning, investigators with the national transportation safety board are back in a central texas cornfield where 16 people died over the weekend in the nation's worst ever hot air balloon accident. nbc's kerry sanders is there. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. indeed investigators know what

happened. the hot air balloon was flying too low and it went directly into these high power volt tan lines. the question this morning is why. this morning investigators work to find the cause of the tragedy, friends and family remember the 16 lives that were taken when the balloon hit those power lines. dr. matt and sunday rowan, married less than a year. the balloon ride was a birthday gift. matt snapped this picture and texted it to his brother just 12 minutes before the crash. >> even down to the last minutes, pictures of them smiling and laughing. >> reporter: the family of laura lee bradson and her daughter page posted this memorial video on youtube. page had just given birth to her first child. this trip, a belated mother's day gift. skip nichols was at the helm. they lifted off from an air park near san antonio. flying due south in a gentle

5-mile-per-hour breeze but eight miles from where they launched, the balloon still hadn't gained the 170 feet it needed to clear those power lines and it drifted into the wires. erica gonzalez snapped this photo 24 minutes before the crash. her husband thought the balloon looked unusually close to the treetops. >> were they climbing? >> no, they weren't. they were not going anywhere. >> reporter: recovered in the debris field, 14 electronic devices all sent to the ntsb lab in washington hoping to extract clues. two years ago the ntsb urged stronger regulations for air balloon ride companies, but those recommendations were turned down by the faa. >> the ntsb, the full board, has classified their response as an unacceptable response. >> reporter: overnight, the heart of texas air balloon ride company announced they would be suspending operations indefinitely and issued a statement to the families of the victims.

the excitement and anticipation for the 2016 olympic games is really reaching a fever pitch. there have been a lot of questions about rio's preparedness as it gets set to welcome the world. we'll chat about that with the city's mayor in just a moment. first, when i arrived, i decided to go right to some of the venues to check on progress firsthand. ♪ i've landed here in rio. i want to give you a tour and what better place to start than right here at the beach. and what better venue to show you than the premiere venue at the summer olympic games, beach volleyball, or as al calls it, the best sport ever. the beach volleyball venue is right smack dab in the middle of copacabana, the most famous beach in all of brazil. the roar of the crowd will be second only to the roar of the waves. one of the things you have to

keep an eye out for during the summer games, the venue here for beach volleyball is literally right on the beach. that's the atlantic here. 50 yards from us. on certain days those waves end up in this venue. that's a concern because at any given match up to 12,000 people will feel these stands. stands which are still being finished. we're standing here and we're a week away from the olympics and i still hear hammering. is that making you nervous? >> yes. nervous and excited. >> the venue manager is a former pro volleyball player himself. it's a party. it's serious. they are competing for the gold but it's supposed to be a party. >> it's serious for the athletes. if you become a gold olympic medalist, that can change your life. >> 21 miles west of copacabana, thousands of other athletes hope

to change their lives at the olympic park located in the rio neighborhood of baja. >> this is futures arena, swimming with the mural and ten nis front of me. half a million people are expected to visit rio for these games and the aquatics venue is bound to be one of the most electric. the water is calm now but when the games begin in the aquatic center, michael phelps, missy franklin, ryan lackty. >> this is where rowing takes place. it's controversial because of the levels of toxic pollution in that water. the athletes have begun arriving. gold medal dreams within their reach and back at the beach volleyball venue, preparations continue for the biggest party rio has ever seen.

would be all dead if it was true. >> the water quality in some of the areas is a problem. government promised to reach certain quality standards. fell short. you said it was a missed opportunity. >> it is a problem in some areas. it's not a problem for the games. the areas where we are holding the sailing competition, that's not a problem there. it's a problem for the city of rio and a problem we have to solve. but if you look at copacabana beach and where rowing is going to be, that's clean water. it's safe water. so there won't be problems. >> what is the current status of the zika outbreak here? >> we're in winter now. i know that winter in new york is different from here. but we are in winter. this is dry season. so we don't have much zika cases now. not a big issue for the games. there are more cases of zika in

caught on camera. you see a half dozen times bystanders are afraid it will catch fire, flip the car right side up, cut the man's seat belt and get him out. he was air lifted to the hospital. nobody else was hurt. police are investigating the cause of that crash. that looks like a stunt film. crazy there. >> hard to watch. >> tamron, thank you. as we told you earlier, new urgency in the fight against zika in the wake of four new cases found in florida and another part of the south, a new weapon developed to keep that diseased at bay. >> reporter: new alarm over zika after health officials say three men and a woman in florida were infected with the virus likely by local mosquitos. these are the first documented cases of local transmission in the u.s. now, houston. another prime breeding ground for mosquitos is launching this

secret weapon in the fight against zika. the drones are part of a partnership between microsoft and harris count. microsoft researchers ethan jackson sets up smart mosquito traps in backyards, at parks and in the woods. the traps will trap and prevent zika before it becomes an epidemic. >> we built a mosquito catching this one subpoena mart -- is smart because in realtime it can tell the species. >> reporter: with artificial intelligence, they detect vibration of mosquito wings and capture them to be studied. in the next phase microsoft will deploy automated drones equipped with mapping technology and they'll scan the area and identify mosquito hot spots. the data is turned around almost immediately to show what time of day mosquitos are the most active. that's a huge spike.

doughnut shop where she was shot. police are looking for a person of interest, a guy named endicott mccray. the sierra lamar murder case could be delayed again. it was scheduled to start today but the lawyers will ask for it to be moved to october. sierra lamar disappeared in 2012 while on her way to school. tesla says it will buy solar panel solar city for $2.6 billion in stock to form a one stop clean energy company that combines energy. it will offer consumer solar panels, home battery storage and electric cars under a single brand. for more local news coming up in half an hour.

let's look at the weather over the country. over the weekend, flooding near maryland where six inches of rain fell in two hour's time. it's the storm system that moved through. this morning we're looking at the chance of storms to redevelop and if some of those storms happen over the areas that were hard hit over the weekend, we could see more flooding. that's why we do have flash flood watches across eastern pennsylvania and parts of new jersey. heavy rain moved through st. louis this morning and more heavy rain is likely to move back in later on today. this area of low pressure is continuing to move offshore but it still keeps things unsettled through the day today. as we go into this afternoon, more showers and more storms to pop up. not every town will get one but we are looking at just those scattered showers. keep an eye to the sky if you are out and about today. we could see an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain in the mid-atlantic region. elsewhere, we could end up with

looking at the headlines today, federal investigators will be interviewing the ground crew of a hot air balloon that crashed near lockhart, texas, on saturday. all 16 people onboard died. the ntsb said the balloon likely made contact with nearby power lines before crashing in a field. the fight against zika is taking on new urgency after florida confirmed four cases were mostly caused by local mosquitos. health officials are going door to door in a miami neighborhood urging people, especially pregnant women, to get tested and to take precautions against mosquito bites. this is the first local transmission of zika in the united states. indoor trampoline parks have jumped in popularity and so have visits to the emergency room. injuries soared from just under

blogger behind sweet and sour chronicles and easy dinner using fresh farmer market veggies. good morning. good to see you. i read over this recipe last night and was ready to dive in. i think i had a dream about it. so delicious. the best part is fresh ingredients but something fast. >> wonderful seasonal vegetables here and noodles and chicken. and so where do we start? >> we start with our noodles. you can use egg noodles from a chinese market. today we're using spaghetti because it's easy and convenient. we boil these in advance. drain them and put them in later. we'll blanch our vegetables which are broccolis and know peas. swap out with any seasonal favorite vegetable. we boil these for about a minute until they get nice and tender crisp. and we shock anymore in ice water later. i'll have you had help me do

that. >> ice water is key here. people think you can use cold water. you need to shock it. >> stop the cooking process. a great time saving technique is use water you boiled for your veggies. i like canola oil. it's heart healthy. ginger and garlic. it flavors the oil and makes the dish delicious. roast chicken here. great if you have leftover rotisserie chicken and red bell pepper adds a pop of color and is loaded with vitamin c which i love. we add mushrooms, a great antioxidant. add those carrots. it adds a nice crunch. >> how long do you do stir fry total? >> three minutes here. we move over here. >> blanched vegetables complete. >> get those muscles going. put those in here. they'll stop cooking.
