"today in the bay" starts right now. >> a very good thursday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. it is a word that a lot of people have been looking forward to hear for a few weeks now, cooler, cooler temperatures. >> especially when you think about last week how hot it was.

then also started out warm this week but we are in for some cooler weather as we coast right on into the weekend. let's get a live look outside. all of our microclimates starting out in the 50s. it's 5239 in the south bay and in the tri-valleys. 80s for the inland areas. 63 along the coast and in san francisco. and the peninsula today, 73 degrees. not bad at all as we get closer to that weekend. i'll detail what else to expect. mike already has a series of crashes in pleasant hill. >> we had a full closure as a result of that but we'll show you around the bay traffic flows well. again, the freeway reopened on 089 through oakland. overnight scheduled construction. again, that is clearing. now, 29th. this, 680 is roring because in the last few minutes we've had a reopening northbound at monument. we had a car that broke down. then a fender bender and then a second crash in the area. thankfully no major injuries and

all lanes are reopening traveling up 242 and easy drive-thru concord. back to you. at 4:31, we do begin with breaking news this morning. a police standoff is in its 15th hour in san francisco. a man has barricaded himself inside a home refusing to comply with officers. the home is on miramar and ocean avenues. you see "today in the bay's" bob redell there live. what's happening right now, bob? >> reporter: well, good morning to you, laura. since 1:30 yesterday afternoon this man has been barricaded. police believe is his home here on miramar near the intersection with ocean and the ingleside district. police have shown a light on the third floor window where they believe this man is hold up. the s.w.a.t. team is out here. there does not appear to be any communication going on with the man inside and the hostage negotiator is out here. unless they're doing this via cell. in other words, we don't hear anyone on a bullhorn. that started around 1:30 yesterday afternoon. police telling us this man was

wanted for a crime they believe he committed earlier in the day. he obviously alluded police and ran into this building here where he's been hold up inside. they say it's possible he might be armed with a weapon, not clear if it's a glun, knife, or something else. that's why they're being precautious here in dealing where this man. they also have a hostage negotiator here. that does not necessarily mean that this man is holding someone hostage inside. they have not been clear whether or not he's the only person inside or if there are other people inside. what they believe is his home here on the 200 block of miramar and ingleside district. the man not coming out for over 12 hours now. >> all right, some activity possibly there. bob, thank you very much. 4:33. firefighters are still facing a lot of problems this morning from the cold wildfire that's burning east. strong winds coupled with hot dry weather presenting tough conditions for firefighters who are working in that rugged

terrain. not to mention the clouds of ash choking the skies there. evacuation orders are still in effect. helicopters are picking up water from nearby lake to stop the fire in its path. the fire has burned more than 4700 acres since tuesday and we're awaiting another update. containment at this point is 10%. 600 firefighters are fighting on the concentrating on highway 28. that road remains closed. so far no structures very. burned. new details a short time ago about a deadly stabbing rampage in london. in just the last half hour we've learned the woman killed in the attack is from the united states. police in london say 19-year-old man is in custody accuse of stabbing six people in all near the british museum. the attack took place late last night in russell square. another american is listed among

the injured. no update on that person's condition. in the last half hour police believe the attack is not terror related. investigators say mental health was a factor. the attacks came in just hours after an announcement that police in london will be carrying more guns. he will be sentenced on 162. counts including murder in the aid of racketeering. this is for the 2006 murder of two rival gang members. that. count alone carries a mandatory life sentence. as soon as today we may learn if seven men charged in the murder of a bay area mom are going to stand trial. police say that pierce died in march of 2015 trying to protect her children from gunfire in west oakland. at the time police said she was caught in the cross fire of a gang shootout. police arrested the seven men who are now charged after working with neighbors to find the shooters.

today's preliminary hearing is going to determine if there's enough evidence to move the case to a full trial. a san francisco sheriff's deputy is in trouble accused of smuggling contraband to an inmate by hiding it inside of a burrito. we learned the deputy in question attempted to deliver a bag to murder suspect michael green inside the hall of justice last friday. tucked in that bag was a cellphone stuffed inside a burrito. we're told the deputy managed to bypass metal detectors but law enforcement were able to intercept the phone before it got to the inmate. the deputy is under investigation and is now barred from going into any jail. the san francisco sheriff released a statement sayingsh quote, the introduction of any contraband into the jails is a matter of great concern. cellphones in particular can be used to intimidate witnesses and perpetrate crime. our weather pattern changing just a little bit as we get closer to the weekend.

kari hall has a look at your forecast. >> it is nice as you head out the door. temperatures generally in the 50s heading into the 70s and 80s in spots. we'll talk about that and a look ahead to the weekend. looking at 680 over here for dublin. tri-valley moves well but we do have a couple of crashes to let you know about. one in particular cutting off part of niles canyon. and new developments in the fatal bus crash in central california. why friends of the driver say he hadn't been sleeping well lately.

that we brought you all morning long yesterday on "today in the bay." hours after a deadly crash in saratoga an unlicensed driver linked to that crash surrendered to police. an 18-year-old woman died when that car went off of a cliff along highway 9 early yesterday morning. a pregnant 15-year-old girl suffered major injuries. police say alex eduardo garcia left the scene and later turned himself in to san jose police. he's been charged with felonies including hit and run, vehicular manslaughter, and driving without a valid license. an update on tuesday's deadly tour bus crash in merced county. authorities are saying that four people died down from the initial report of five. more details are emerging about the driver mario vasquez. family members say he was distraught over the recent death of his wife and had not been sleeping well.

how far, they insist he would not have driven if he was tired. vasquez survived that crash and investigators are planning on interviewing him. more on the breaking news yesterday. the crash landing of the jetliner in the middle east. this is video captured by the people at the terminal at dubai international airport. one firefighter died while helping rescue people from the burning plane. the emirates jet was flying in from southern india. as it landed it skidded across the runway. passengers scrambled out as the fire engulfed the plane. all 300 passengers and crew though managed to make it out to safety before the plane eventually exploded. a man is recovering from a knife wound he says he received playing pokemon go in san jose last week. kris says a man and woman thought he was recording them with his phone. the two attacked him and the man -- then the man slashed his face with a knife. other players helped him and called police but the suspect

light show last night, not from the typical neo, in there from but nature. light nipg storm played out across the sky. caught it all branching out across that vegas skyline. some were so bright as you see, they just lit up the hills and mountains behind the city. >> forget about lady luck. lady lightning. >> you should start a weather related hotel and have cool lightning shows, rain inside. >> that's a good idea. >> costume changes. >> and we're going to have some great weather as we head across the bay area. looking for to some cooler temperatures. the clouds are here as we get a live look you side now over san jose. and we will see the clouds for a little while longer as we start out this morning. and getting a look now at san francisco. this is mccovey cove. 57 degrees there now. and we will once again have some clouds that will keep our temperatures down as we go into this morning and the afternoon

as well. right now in napa, 54 degrees. san jose, 59. and 58 degrees in oakland. so a light jacket needed. this afternoon you may also need it in san francisco once those winds pick up. it will only see the high of 63 degrees there. really bringing the temperatures down, effort inland valleys. we went from 95 yesterday in fairfield to expecting a high of 80 today. 86 degrees in livermore and 78 degrees today in san jose. the wind direction, part of the reason why as it blows onshore it will pick up today and we will have some gusty winds, over 15 to 25 miles an hour. so we will be watching out for those gusts and the wind will blow onshore at 10 to 15. looking at all the mike climates and highs today, reaching 84 degrees in los gatos. 61 in pacifica. the mission district today. 63 degrees, 78 in santa rosa

while 68 degrees in oakland and livermore. up to 86 degrees. so still warm in a few spots but not nearly as warm as it was once again as the high pressure to the south of us continues to break down. it moves away from us and also that monsoonal moisture going on across the southwest. that's what caused that lightning show over vegas yesterday. and as a heat breaks this weekend our temperatures will back off. and it will be in the 70s and 80s. as we get a look at san francisco for the next seven days, looking at low 60s for today and tomorrow. mid 60s for the weekend. and then we'll bump it up a few degrees early next week. we'll also see warmer temperatures inland. but today, tomorrow, this weekend is looking good with highs in the low to mid 80s. breezy winds and mostly sunny skies. we'll talk more about this coming up. let's head over to mike now starting with the crash in the tri-valley. >> that's right. this affects folks trying to get to 680. the earlier one was 680 cleared in pleasant hill. not a whole lot to worry about. you do have to have this as a concern though getting out of

transgender bathroom use -- has some local l-g-b-t leaders concerned. on transgender bathroom use has some local lgbt leaders concerned. >> a virginia student born girl but identifies as a boy cannot use the boy's bathroom at least for now. that is the temporary ruling that the supreme court handed down yesterday. the school district the student attends requested the supreme court make that ruling while a district appeals lower court rules which allowed that the student to use the boy's bathroom. the lgbt community is concerned the supreme court ruling is a step backwards. >> if we lose this election, then we're going to be seeing ruling after ruling like this. it's not just going to be a temporary hold, it's going to be a situation where lives are gradually chipped away from us and no longer able to function as a full citizen in this
