and at times cool, especially in san francisco where the high only gets up to 63 degrees. we'll talk about what to expect this weekend. help you make some plans. that's coming up. mike, very happy about the commute right now. >> first of all because i've already commuted. i'm in to work. traffic flows nicely around the bay. earlier crashes cleared from the south bay and tri-valley. look at the speeds over here. holding up, pretty much what you would expect, mild slow for 680 down through pleasanton. starting south as you head down towards sunol. and 880 and hayward and union city for the slowing at the nimitz. standard flow of traffic. bay bridge, no problems for the upper east shore freeway. toll plaza metering lights are on. toll plaza is full for all lanes just up to the 880 over crossing. in san francisco, we have this issue. police activity. off of 280 affecting om one of the service streets. it's miramar but, laura, you have much more because this is a bigger deal than a traffic incident. >> very much so because it's a

breaking news we've been following since we first came on air at 4:30. right now you see here police s.w.a.t. members and hostage negotiators are trying to coax a walnut man out of that san francisco home. the standoff now well into its second day. "today in the bay's" bob redell has been at the scene all morning long near the border of ingleside. any movement so far, bob? >> reporter: you see behind us we've got what appears to be two s.w.a.t. -- members of sfpd s.w.a.t. team going into this apartment building where this man is hold up inside. and then i want you to tilt up a little bit you can see where they've shown light on the third floor window at around 5:00. we did see someone inside that window quickly lift up the blinds and look out. we don't know if they looked outside but we did see them lift up the blinds and close the blinds. this is an apartment building on miramar and ocean on a ingleside

district where a man has barricaded himself inside since 1:30 yesterday afternoon. s.w.a.t. is on the scene as well. it's a crisis negotiator. one reason police are being so cautious, they believe this man is armed with some sort of weapon. that's information we received this morning. it's not clear if that weapon is a gun, a knife, or something else. ms. were trying to arrest this man for a crime he committed earlier yesterday. pd won't say what it was. the man alluded officer, ran into what police believe is his unit inside this building. and again, there is a negotiator out here. he or she has tried to coax the man out with no luck so far. also no indication whether he has anyone hostage inside. again, this apartment building here in ingleside district, a man hold up inside. they believe it's his home on the third floor. nd again, they're trying to just get him to come out. that's why they do have the building surrounded. as you've seen, these two more officers have entered the building. reporting live in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay."

>> thanks so much, bob. we'll keep checking back with you. also happening today, raymond "shrimp boy" chow is scheduled for sentencing. a jury convicted the chinatown gang leader in january. he will be sentenced on 162 counts including murder in the aid of racketeering. this is for the 2006 murder of two rival gang members. that count alone carries a mandatory life sentence. now to developing story that we have been following very closely out of yolo county where a wildfire continues to burn east of lake berryessa. winds coupled with hot, dry conditions fueled by oak woodland presents a difficult problem for firefighters. as for the latest information, here's what we know. evacuations orders remain in place for those living in that area. helicopters are using water, transporting it from lake berryessa over to the flames to stop the fire that's raging in that steep rugged hill area. it's covering, blanketing three different counties. the fire started tuesday and has

quickly grown up to 4700 acres, containment is around 10% can some 600 firefighters working to put of the flames. they face walls of flames and they're concentrating right now on the north end of the fire who i'll working to hold the fire lines along highway 128. so far no structures have been burned. we're going to bring you a live report coming up in the next half hour. a teenage girl is hospitalized with serious injuries after being hit by a car in daly city. it happened yesterday afternoon at west moore and south mayfair avenues. a block from busy skyline boulevard. the car hit a 12-year-old girl. investigators are not determined fault. the neighbors say crashes are common along that stretch of road. >> my niece was hit here. it was a day like today. foggy,foggy, a little bit darker and she was hit by a car. >> you've seen people hit out here? >> a lot. almost every month. i almost got hit here three

times already. >> you almost got hit three times? >> yeah. >> daly city police say the driver remained on scene and cooperated with police. a man right now is recovering from a knife wound that he says he suffered playing pokemon go last week. kris said that a man and woman thought he was recording him with his cellphone. the two of them attacked peguidi and man slashed his face with a knife. they called police but attackers got away. he still says this kind of thing will not stop him from playing pokemon go. that's the picture of the injury that perguidi suffered. tuesday's deadly tour bus crash in merced county. four people died. that's down from the initial report of five. more details are emerging agent the driver mario vasquez. family members say he was distraught recently over the death of his wife and hadn't been sleeping well. however, they insist he would not have driven if he was tired.

he survived the crash. investigators are planning to interview him. right now our coverage of the rio olympics and very special honor for one man who calls rio de janiero home. olympic organizers have chosen david vieira bisbo to carry the torch through copacabana tomorrow. bisbo is the owner of a popular bar famous in international travel guides at tracking tourists from all over the world. the opening ceremony is now only one day away. but some of the competition is already under way. olympic soccer has started, specifically women's soccer. u.s. team there has taken the first step toward gold to the heavy favorites and team usa soccer beat new zealand yesterday 2-0. the second goal there was scored by cal alum alice morgan. the women who won the world's cup the last time around and the gold medal in london are the favorites in rio. they play france on saturday. >> they are quite the team.

the only competition taking place today is men's soccer but team usa failed to qualify for that event. but we still have plenty of olympic coverage here on nbc bay area. tonight at 8:00 bob costas gives us an introduction to the host city and brings us the sites and sounds of brazil while showing us the challenges rio de janiero has faced just to get ready for the games. let's take a live look, in fact, right now at rio. look at the beautiful beach. we'll have more on the olympic coverage throughout the morning. including a live report from olympic village coming up in just about ten minutes. clear skies there in rio. not quite the same for our skies here in the bay area but things are going to clear up. it's going to be a nice day, kari. >> it will be a nice day. let's look at that rio forecast today. as we start out, four hours ahead of our time. the sun is starting to come through the clouds. it will be in the mid 70s today. and dipping back into the upper 60s by tonight. kind of the same thing we'll see here, especially for spots like

palo alto and san jose. it will be in the upper 70s there. low 60s for san francisco. fairfield today up to 80. and 79 in morgan hill. livermore today, 86 degrees. so feeling much better compared to the heat we had even just yesterday. and we'll talk about what to expect this weekend coming up in less than ten minutes. mike says your freeways are looking good right now. >> yeah, the freeways are looking free unless you have a toll lane, and they're looking tolly, i guess. looking over the rest of the bay. not a lot of slowing. a blitz for san jose and approaching the san mateo and dumbarton bridge. and the tri-valley, standard patterns in toward fremont for 680. and 880, highway 4 westbound through concord out of pittsburg and bay point. build there, no surprise there. upper east shore freeway. surprisingly good heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza. the camera, you notice the traffic is a bit lighter because we only have traffic filled in all lanes to the end of the parking lot and tapers off off of west grand. it continues to fill in off the maze.

another issue that i'm just watching here, from the emeryville camera, getting a little bit of a problem seeing our span itself. now, that's from emeryville looking at treasure island. haze and low clouds but it's not affecting the drive. visibility for the drivers is just fine. the headlights coming out of the tunnel back over to the oakland side. back to you. up next on "today in the bay," developments out of london this morning are getting clearer. what we've learned. new information about the woman killed in a stabbing rampage. back here in silicon valley. a company says it's done it, equal pay for equal work. that's coming up in business and tech.

at 6:13. new details coing in a short time ago about a deadly stabbing rampage out of london. within the last couple of hours we've learned the woman killed in the attack is from the united states. police in london say a 19-year-old man is in custody accuse of stabbin six people in all near the british museum. the attack took place late last night in russell square. now another american is also listed among the injured. there's been no update on that person's condition and we do not yet know the identity of the woman who died. police believe this attack is not terror related. but investigators say mental health does appear to be a factor. at 6:13, a follow-up on that crash landing at dubai international airport. we brought this story all morning long to you yesterday at

breaking news right here on "today in the bay." this morning there are still delays of flight cancelations as a result of this crash since the airport can only use one runway. the emirates boeing 777 was coming in from india when it crashed upon landing and caught fire. all 300 people onboard survived. but sadly a firefighter died while responding to that scene. at 6:14, apple says it's achieved absolute parody at the company. men and women are paid the same for the same job. >> scott mcgrew, amazingly, one of the first silicon valley companies able to make that claim. >> very few can. do the same job, get the same pay. apple gave us the data on diversity in the company. it made slow progress increasing the number of women and minorities at the company. and the progress is coming from its hiring. apple's hiring women and minorities at a higher rate than the general population. apple says, quote, women earn $1 for every dollar male employees

earn. tesla did just as we did it would, it said it's losing mormmore money and making fewer cars than it meant to take or told us it would make. 14402 was delivered in the past quarter. it lost $293 million. on the phone with reporters ceo elon musk talked about the future of autopilot and said, quote, full out on the my is going to come a hell of a lot faster than anyone thinks it will. what we have under develop system going to blow people's minds. the report from tesla just about wraps up our earnings season. linked in will worth tonight still independent company. here we ve more teslas. singh ga will report as well. wet don't taught about zi in,ga very often. the san francisco gaming company. an analyst this morning says the first time in the history of covering the company we've recommended it as an investment. he says he thinks some of those recent hit games will really

cause the stock to jump tonight. now, i got to admit zynga is up 10% for the year but still bouncing along the bottom. ipo'ed a couple of years agot at ten. it's bouncing around at three. there's room to grow. >> there we go. thank you very much. we know where one company, many, many companies are going from here, silicon valley start-up made a giant leap in the race to the moon. the new race, that is, moon express which started in mountain view gained clearance from the faa to head to the moon. they are the first private company to do that. the company plans to try and land an unmanned robot like this on the moon next fall. all of it is part of a google x prize competition. they will still need final approval from the fa ax before they launch. >> put that on your to do list, mike inouye. >> get my moon express card? >>. >> that's right. >> express right now into the

weekend. already thursday. >> it will be a great weekend heading in to sunshine, some morning clouds, and then we will also have some cooler weather compared to what we've seen recently across the bay area. keeping an eye on the lake berryessa area because that's where we had the wildfires just off to the east of there so we will see if the air quality does go down as we go into the day as we've seen that wildfire once again raging out of control. looks good now as the sun rises and the temperature is 54 degrees. good time to try to get containment on that cold fire. once again, that is just off to the east of there. and now our temperatures all across the bay area in the mid to upper 50s. some low 60s already. it will be a breezy day. as we see the clouds extending farther inland and the winds coming in from the west. here's the speeds, miles per hour up to 15 miles an hour later on this evening through parts of the east bay as well as the north bay.

and tomorrow more of the same. it will be windy, westerly wind bringing bag our natural air conditioning and temperatures coming down quite a few degrees. in oakland today we start out with some clouds and 59 degrees. 62 degrees at noon. so warm-up will be very gradual. reaching into the upper 60s by the time you're getting ready to head home from work. and it will be in the upper 70s to mid 80s for the south bay. the peninsula will be at 75, up to 76 degrees in palo alto. and the financial district at 62, 80 for fairfield while walnut creek is at 79. oakland, 6 degrees. danville today, 85 degrees. so our weather pattern is changing getting ready for that stubborn area of high pressure that made it really hot here. it's moving away but there's also some monsoonal moisture across the desert southwest. for us this area of low pressure has more of an influence on our weather. bringing in that onshore flow and our temperatures will be backing off. actually trending schooler than afternoon. over the next several days.

so in san francisco, expect a highs to reach into the low to mid 60s. mostly sunny skies for the afternoon. morning clouds and fog. and we will also see the morning clouds also for many of the inland spots reaching 84 today. 82 the next couple of days. and then our temperatures gradually start to warm back up early next week. heading over to mike now, drivers are just taking it easy. >> that's right. they will slow down, just continue to get ready. listen to the report. glance at the screen when you hear what you need. most of the bay is smooth. south bay, blips here. south 280 around winchester, cord board on the roadway. no traffic break, just a warning from a call in. 680 slow from pleasanton and sunol. just a tad bit. 880, a blip below the speed limit. that may be more through union city. not dramatic between the san mateo and dumbarton bridge heading across the bay. smooth on the westbound directions. highway 4 a little slow through concord approaching 680 there. the east shore freeway, build in

the volume. we'll look at berkeley. have that volume at university. traffic flows smoothly. this looks like a lot but it's moving well. close to 50 miles per hour at the slowest. the peninsula, an easy flow of traffic as folks make their way over san mateo bridge. there's palo alto. back to you. >> all right, looks good. we're now just one day away from the opening ceremony at the 2016 rio olympics. >> "today in the bay's" jay dpra is all about the excitement. he is live, providing coverage for us from inside olympic park, feeding off the energy in rio de janiero. and, jay, do us a favor. describe the atmosphere for us right now. >> sam, laura, it's unbelievable. the excitement here has been building over the last several days. it is a huge party. and the visitors here from around the world all joining in. the clouds have burned off early this morning. the sun is coming out. it will be another beautiful day here in rio. there's a citywide celebration

going on right now and the mayor has declared it a holiday. he wants everybody to get out and have some fun. the torch will tour the city one last time from the mountains to the shoreline, here in olympic park. everyone, already on fire when it comes to that torch. they are excited and anxious for these games to begin. rio is for the most part ready. crews are putting a few finishing touches on the venues. while the olympic celebration has already started in the city. team usa is on the ground in rio and getting settled into the athletes village, joining 18,000 competitors from around the globe. >> i think overall our team is so strong right now. it's incredible to be a part of this team. >> reporter: even before the opening ceremony and pre-game workouts the american athletes can feel the intensity of the olympics. >> the energy almost punches you in the face. just everyone is getting after it and working hard. >> reporter: all working toward the same goal, olympic gold.

temperatures that will be settling into the bay area. a look at all of our microclimates. we start out with clouds this morning. all of that clears out for some sunshine and, hey, look at that. it will only be oughtity degrees today in the south bay. 63 degrees in san francisco. we will talk about what to expect as we go into the next several ds but if you're looking for a couch mike says there's one on the freeway. >> yeah. we don't have a real drimescripn of it but couch in the roadway is enough to tell you to avoid it in the south bay. the freeway, speeds are looking great. southbound 280 approaching 880 right there. aaround where that cardboard box is. i don't think that is the box tort couch but that is the stretch. no traffic break reported but i'll expect one for the next few. track that. meanwhile, the commute for the silicon valley and around the bay looking great. metering lights are on. you're slowing just a bit through berkeley. nothing dramatic though. we have more traffic for the east shore freeway. over in san francisco, this issue is just off of 280. it's not a major commute issue.

ocean or avenue through the area is open. but this is in the ingleside area where you have this big news story going on right now. >> that's right. it is breaking news we're following this morning in san francisco, mike. live pictures, in fact. this is a police standoff that is now in its second day. bob redell is at the scene bringing us live reports since 4:30 this morning. he actually reported in our last half hour that members of the s.w.a.t. team, we saw them there, moving in. police tell us the suspect ran into his own home about 1:30 yesterday afternoon. it's all unfolding on miramar avenue near holloway. on the border between ingleside and terraval districts. police called miramar to traffic in that area. bob redell is gathering information right now. he is going to join was a live report from the scene in about 20 minutes. a sdwoping story out of yolo county where the so-called cold fire is continuing to spread there. officials are urging people to stay indoors because of the thick smoke that you can see.

"today in the bay's" pete suratos brought you live reports yesterday on "today in the bay." he joins us again this morning back in winters near the fire line. pete, what is the latest at this hour? >> you know, we just got this information from cal fire that evacuees from the golden bear estate will be allowed back into their homes at 8:00 a.m. this morning. now, this fire has jumped an acreage. 4700 acres. it's roughly at 15% containment. we're at highway 128 and pleasant valley road. right now we want to show you the smoke above the mountains. showing where the cold fire is in that mountainous terrain. it started on tuesday afternoon just east of lake berryessa. the fire continued to burn overnight. cal fire says the southerly flow of the fire created spot fires on the southwest side just last night. now more than 600 firefighters were on the ground battling those spot fires. and that's why cal fire says the

focus is shifting more to the southwest end of this fire. and the weather once again could be a challenge for firefighters today. >> despite the winds, the winds are not as bad as they could be. but any wind in this area poses a challenge. the fuel is very dry. we're dealing with very steep, rugged we terrain. access is limited and extremely difficult. these are all factors and challenges we're faced at. that's why we have the amount of resource on the ground and in the area to try and button this up as quickly as possible. >> now, the forecast in winters will be somewhere in the 90s today. that will be something to monitor. the fire is burning in the same area as the monticello fire of 2014. socal fire says crews are familiar with this area. giving them an evangel as far as sending up those important fire lines. we're live in winter, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> pete, thank you very much. continuing our coverage now to the south of the bay area where we've been checking overnight on the progress of the soberanes fire burning right near big sur. here's what we can tell you

about that wildfire. so far almost 47,000 acres have been scorched. ten times the size of the scope of what pete was just reporting back in yellow county. that fire, the soberanes is now 25% contained. in the meantime, authorities continue to look for the people responsible for starting an illegal camp fire that sparked the fire back on july 22nd. that could all nately be charge with a death of a bulldozer operator killed while battling that blaze. at 6:35, we may learn as soon as today if seven men charged in the murder of a bay area mother will stand trial. police say pierce died in march of 2015 trying to protect her children from gunfire in west oakland. at the time police say she was caught in the cross fire of a gang shootout. police arrested seven men now charged after working with neighbors to find the shooters. today's preliminary hearing will determine if there's enough toefd move the case to trial. a follow-up to breaking news that we brought to you all morning yesterday on "today in

the bay." hours after a deadly crash near saratoga, unlicensed driver linked to the crash surrendered to police. an 18-year-old woman died when that car went over a cliff along highway t early yesterday morning. and a pregnant 15-year-old girl suffered major injuries. police say that alex eduardo garcia left the scene and later turned himself in in san jose. he's been charged with multiple felonies that i collude hit and run, vehicular manslaughter, and driving without a valid license. expect more complications today from the strike by court clerks in the south bay. santa clara county superior court clerks hit the picket lines yesterday demanding a pay raise. the strike resulted in a slow down of the court facilities. majority of cases will be continued to a it later date buf you've been summoned for jury duty, check whether or not to report. at this point no new talks are scheduled between the courts and employees union. right now decision 2016,

mounting pressure this morning for republican presidential candidate donald trump to tone down his campaign. >> at the same time the obama administration is trying to explain hundreds of millions of dollars in cash overnighted to iran. tracie potts live in washington, d.c. this morning following all the latest developments on the political front. >> hey, good morning. donald trump trying to tie hillary clinton to all that cash but she wasn't even in washington, it had been years when that cash actually came up. meantime, there is concern among big name republicans about the direction of the trump campaign. >> the love in that room was so incredible. >> reporter: donald trump praising military families after publicly criticizing one. today veterans in washington will pressure republicans to denounce him. >> there's nothing he's going to do to dissuade me voting for him. no way. >> reporter: sources tell nbc the party may intervene over trump's refusal to support top

republicans. trump claim hillary clinton negotiated $400 million cash payment to iran, the same day hostages were released. >> so far as i know it had nothing do do with any kind of hostage swap or any other tit for tat. >> it happened years after clinton left. the obama administration insists the payment was for a canceled contract, not ransom. >> it is not, it was not, we said that from the beginning. >> reporter: team trump isn't buying it. >> folks, how stupid are we? >> hillary clinton and barack obama essentially put a price tag on the head of every american traveling abroad. >> reporter: clinton is focusing on trump's businesses. >> i really would like him to explain why he paid chinese workers to make trump ties. this is one of them. it's got his name on it, of course. >> reporter: she tours a small business in las vegas today. and she's also edging up in the polls. ten points, according to the

latest poll. that one came out from fox. within the last 24 hours. >> tracie potts, live from d.c. thank you very much. 6:38. let's switch gears from politics to the weather. safe topic today. in fact, we're approaching the weekend. it's going to be nice. >> yes, it will be much cooler than the weather we've had recently, sam and laura. this morning grab a jacket before you head out, mid to upper 50s. and even into the this afternoon and san francisco, we will have a hard time shaking those clouds in the mist and drizzle. it will be up to 63 degrees. in oakland today, expect a high of 68. 80 in fairfield and concord. and san jose expecting a high of 78 degrees while santa rosa also more of the same. into the weekend there will be some more of those nice weather ahead. i'll detail that and a warmup coming early next week. now as we head over to the couch. -- head over to mike -- >> well, yes. >> still that couch out there. >> there is not that couch. we were talking about that because that would be a problem for the morning commute. not a problem for the south bay.

the attack was all a misunderstanding but a very violent one. >> reporter: right. at this point it seems like everybody knows pokemon go is and what it look likes when people are playing it. apparently not. and a san jose man found out that that led to a very violent misunderstanding. to say the least. this is kris peguidi out playing pokemon go again. he came upon a couple on st. carlos and second streets. he said he had his phone out in front of him and the couple seemed confused and then angry about what he was doing. >> they thought i was recording them. and then i was like, no, i'm playing a game on my phone. that's all. you know. i kept walking. he was holding a knife. didn't realize it until later. he got me in the chin and i turned and it cut my face open. >> reporter: now because pokemon go is so popular there were a lot of other players nearby who jumped in to help him stop the

now. we'll see some cleearing and sunshine late i on today. some of us dealing with the fog and the mist and drizzle as you head out the door. but you know it will be a cooler day. you can see the clouds below our camera here in sunol. beautiful start to the day as that sun comes up for most of us. you can't really see it though. it's 55 degrees there. and once again, we are all starting out with some cool temperatures. and mostly cloudy skies. it's now 60 degrees in san jose. napa at 54. we will watch the wind speeds. more closely today because we do have a wildfire that's burning farther to the north. just to the east of lake berryessa. it looks like the winds will be blowing in from the west and southwest throughout the day. picking up for all of the bay area as we see the low clouds spreading inland. again tomorrow, it will be a breezy afternoon but that will help keep us nice and comfortable with our national air conditioning coming in off the ocean. and it will be up to 84 degrees today in los gatos while pacifica is at 61.

the mission district, 63 degrees. and fairfield, 90s there yesterday. we're going to only see it up to 80 degrees today. hayward, 72. pleasanton, expect a high of 87 degrees. our weather pattern changing now that we're getting that hot high pressure out of here. and continues to weaken and move off to the east. this area of low pressure moving in will affect the pacific northwest a little bit more. especially dropping the temperatures but also having an impact on the bay area as we will see our highs backing off into the 70s and 80s. while staying in the 60s along the coast. san francisco, over the next seven days will not get out of the 60s. and it will be slightly warmer for the beginning of next week. we'll also see that trend for the inland areas. reaching 84 degrees today. 82 for tomorrow and saturday. make some plans to get outside. take it in and enjoy it. we will back in the 90s for the start of next week. heading over to mike now, you're hearing about a luggage problem
