high five you tried to do with the mascot. we'll check back in with you in a moment. let's get to our top story. it is a disturbing one. a vicious stabbing attack and near london near the famous british museum and two americans are among the victims. a 19 year old is in custody. let's go straight to kelly cove ya. >> reporter: just hours after police said more armed officers would protect london streets -- >> you have to be ready for the challenge. >> reporter: a man with a knife attacked stabbing six people around this central london square blocks from the british museum. an area packed with hotels, bars and tourists. >> he was actually carrying a knife in his hand and he had blood on his hands. >> reporter: under this tarp, the body of a 60-year-old woman. from america. paramedics tried to save her but she died at the scene. police say the first call came at 10:33 last night and six minutes later they tasered the suspect. a 19-year-old man. >> all of the work that we have

done so far increasingly points to this tragic accident as having been triggered by mental issues. >> reporter: britain like the rest of europe is on edge after terrorist attacks in brussels and nice. earlier this week the french priest killed by isis sympathizers was laid to rest and this man who attacked passengers at a london underground station last december was sentenced to life in prison. britain terror attack threat is at its second highest level, severe. police warning the question is not if but when. police are saying that the suspect is a norwegian national of somali decent. norwegians saying he's been in this country for the past 14 years. no signs he was radicalized. >> thank you. now to the presidential race here and the mountaining pressure facing donald trump from key republicans to tone down and refocus his campaign. will there be an intervention? our decision 2016 team has had

washington post" trump's more unacceptable than clinton right now. frustrated republicans following trump's refusal to endorse paul ryan a major misstep. his own runni inning mate split off to back ryan himself with trump's blessing he says -- >> he strongly encouraged me to endorse paul ryan in next tuesday's primary, and i'm pleased to do it. >> reporter: trump advisers pushing back on reports of a campaign in crisis. >> the candidate is in control of his campaign. the campaign is in very good shape. we are organized. we are moving forward. >> reporter: now all eyes on trump's children. some of the few people with sway over their new notoriously unpredictable father as trump gets good news on the money fronraising about 80 million in july with the party, his campaign says. the most of any month yet. through all of this, the clinton campaign is actively courting republicans and independents with a new big name gop defector, meg whitman, a top businesswoman and donor. a couple swing state polls out

this morning show clinton leading trump including in new hampshire as trump heads to new england today with a town hall set for maine. savannah? >> hallie jackson, thank you. chuck todd is in washington for us this morning. chuck, good morning to you. i know you've been reporting about the feeling among some republican officials that maybe there would be a way that trump would actually withdraw from the race or be persuaded to do so. is that real or is that establishment fantasy at this point? >> i think it's a fantasy. i can't believe the number of conversations that i had yesterday where that issue was there. that somehow in a meeting with him they could convince him to do this. i think that's definitely fantasy. what really they're hoping to do is in the same way that you had republican leaders who were unhappy with trump, they went to his children, they convinced him to change campaign managers and it was the children that finally made that happen. they convinced him to pick mike pence over his own gut which was perhaps a newt gingrich for running mate or something like

that. again, the children were involved. i think realistically what they hope to do is say good grief, can you at least put some structure in place. can you not do 17 interviews in between rallies and get yourself off message and stop attacking this person and stop attacking republicans? so, i think they're hoping realistically that maybe with the help of the kids they're able to say, hey, at least provide some structure here and tone it down. >> what irritates so many republicans, if it was any other candidate running against hillary clinton, this would be a rough patch for hillary clinton given some of the items in the news. >> incredibly rough patch whether it's the current state of the economy, anemic growth, whether it is her insistence again that somehow dreker comey let her off the hook on e-mails and she sort of reinterpreted what comey said in a way that was misleading. throw in the discomfort from

many on this iran deal. the point is never mind we just started air strikes in libya because isis is there. libya was a high profile intervention that hillary clinton pushed. the point is in the last five days this could easily have been hillary clinton's worst five days post-convention and instead the exact opposite and it's all due to donald trump's lack of self-discipline. >> chuck, i have 30 seconds and two raw politic things. talk to me about polls and the fund-raising game. >> i can tell you the polls look like it could be disastrous by next week for donald trump. all hints are this bounce is real and you see it trickle into the states. we could see double digit leads for clinton in swing states. the money, you have to say that donald trump looked like a national candidate that you would expect a mitt romney to have looked like four years ago with the amount of money he raised in july. july was a great month. july was the most unified the republican party had been in seven months. >> from small donors. >> all small donors.

let's see what happens in august though after six incredibly bad days for him. >> chuck todd in washington, thank you so much. chuck mentioned the obama administration is once again raising concerns about funding the fight against zika as officials deal with the outbreak of that virus in miami and this morning we're learning about new cases in u.s. military. nbc's kerry sanders has the latest on this. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. this morning an all-out war is now under way against the homegrown zika mosquito. this morning at a nearby airport they loaded a plane with a chemical called malid. that expected to be more effective than what they have actually been using on the ground. the nalid chemical will be disbursed over a ten-mile area, one of the questions people have is, is it safe to be outside? experts say the best advice is to limit your time outside as this chemical is drifting down,

stay inside for about two hours. this morning the pentagon confirms that 33 u.s. service members including a pregnant woman have contracted zika. all of the cases outside the united states. six family members of service personnel have also contracted the virus. the news comes as health officials in the united states are now cautiously optimistic they can get the homegrown virus now in one area of miami under control. >> i don't think it will be easy. i think it will be difficult. i do believe we can contain it. >> reporter: the battle plan from the air spread a ten-mile area around the zika zone with an insecticide but is it safe? >> you can never say something like that is 100% safe. you should tell people if they see the plane coming over, to go inside. it's just the prudent thing to do. >> reporter: the mayor of miami thinks the city is being prudent when it comes to the wynwood neighborhood, center of the zika outbreak, but he is concerned fear is hurting the local economy. >> it's impacting the image of

wynwood no doubt about that. i understand for pregnant women. that's been misinterpreted. don't travel to miami. >> extend the left leg. >> reporter: at the body belly baby class which isn't near wynwood, pregnant women like amanda are scared. the new normal always includes mosquito repellent and despite temperatures topping 90 degrees, her new dress code is long sleeves and pants for going out. >> i actually just spent so much money on amazon buying more bug spray. i have bug spray in my car, my husband's car, my purse. all over the place. we're trying to do everything we can. >> reporter: the florida governor rick scott has announced the department of health here in the state will now provide free zika tests to any pregnant women in the state. there had been a lot of calls, ob-gyns reporting that there have been calls for these tests which up until now were not

covered by insurance and were rather costly. now they will be provided free. savannah, we're going in because i think the plane will be over our heads shortly. >> thank you very much, kerry. that sounds good. a former washington, d.c. transit cop back in court today to face federal terror charges. 36-year-old nicholas young was arrested in an fbi sting. prosecutors say he was under surveillance for five years. young is accused of buying nearly $250 in mobile apps he thought would be used to scramble messages among isis operatives. if convicted, he faces up to 20 years in prison. in the meantime, drought and heat are stoking 27 large wildfires burning in the west in california the so-called cold fire is growing fast. about 100 people have been forced to evacuate and over 700 firefighters are battling the flames on the ground, in the air and with water dropping helicopters. so far more than seven square miles have been scorched.

olympic park even though nba players are representing home countries. here's the australian putting up his own shower curtain. the same boat used to host vip guests at super bowl xlvi will dock soon. new york's own carmelo anthony has been learning portuguese along with other team members. hours after arriving in rio, we spotted him looking around his new digs. one more win this summer and he'll be the most decorated olympic basketball player in the world. with the place to hold the party. ioc spokesperson told me they're not aware of any stake hoellsta staying on a ship for them. they wouldn't let us onboard. >> maybe it was the accent. i'm not sure. keir, good to see you.

thanks very much. we're going to bring in now mike, longtime espn journalist. huge fan. part of nbc's coverage. >> great to be here with you, matt. >> you have done everything in your career. including covering a world cup here in 2014 in rio but never an olympic games. what are your expectations? >> just the passion that all corners of the globe coming together especially at a time like this where the world seems so angry and fragmented and all of the news is negative. where else are we gathering over 200 countries to bring together just for competition that joy of the world. i'm looking forward to see how that comes together and hopefully it's safe. >> not to shed the heartwarming things you said but people care about medals. we have to admit. how is it looking for team usa in her rio? >> with the doping issues, some russian athletes not here, probably even better chance. china second. one thing as you've experienced at the games, when that home nation plays, you want to see

them boost their medal count and perhaps that would happen for brazil this time around. >> on average 50% boost of gold medals and 20% in medals overall. >> you saw it in vancouver and london. team gb was energized by the crowd. sometimes you play at home and it's more pressure. in the olympics it pushes athletes farther. >> what do you expect in glamorous sports. we're talking swimming, gymnastics, basketball, beach volleyball? >> beach volleyball will be glamour here. we love the game here in brazil and our american teams, both women and men are so strong. those will be events happening here on copacabana beach where they break out in the middle of the day. that will be great. you mentioned basketball. usa has so many strong teams especially on the women's side where we'll see american medals pile up. >> we were talking before the show can athletes live up to the expectations and can some other athletes shatter expectations?

names come to mind for you? >> simone biles. go win four or five gold medals. michael phelps, most decorated olympian we've had, go win another two or three gold. that's so hard. as we see, it's one moment in time for all of these athletes. that has to be so much pressure. yet phelps has delivered games after games. can he do it the last time around or we think the last time around? >> just personally, is there an event you're looking forward to seeing? >> we're both golf fans. i want to see golf. since 1904 since golf has been in the olympics. i would love to see competition great traction and suck heceed if it doesn't catch on, we ask them to hit a marshmallow and catch it in their mouth. >> great to have you here. we'll have more from rio just ahead. let's go back to savannah in new york. >> all right, guys, thank you so much. >> i got a stunt double in rio.

we really put a lot of thought into this movie honestly. it was inspired by our love of pixar movies and animation. it has a lot of surprisingly deep ideas in it again considering it's essentially talking food for 90 minutes. i think people will be surprised how much heart there is in the movie and there's as lot of theological thought that went into the movie. if you bring your kids to it, you are a bad parent. >> we made that so clear. >> i think it's the best movie seth and the gang has done. >> really? >> i told one of his producers i think it's the best movie ever made. >> i would say just for the shear number of hot dog doubles, that was incredibly impressive. >> exactly. >> if there were a gold medal. >> i think that we put a lot into it. i think it's a genuinely funny movie.

spacey's character is so focused on career and we are all trying to make our kids' lives better. it doesn't have to just live on the floor but you do have to find the time. i love the movie that celebrates that. >> in between nonstop filming schedule, garner found the time for her most important role as mom to her three kids with ben affleck. as modern families go, how is your family doing? >> we're definitely a modern family. we are doing really well. thank you. the kids have had a great summer. it's all going okay. >> you went to europe recently. good family bonding trip. >> ben was working in london on "justice league." i felt like the kids should have that experience. he and i are great friends.

we just all went and we had an amazing time and he worked hard. >> did they get to see him? >> of course, yeah. i want them to see everything is okay. >> that's really admirable how you and ben have both -- it's all about children first and being a team. that's what you have to do. >> you don't have a choice. it has to be. >> garner also wants to give back. earlier this summer the west virginia native headed back to her home state bringing attention to devastation caused by flash floods. >> people are just made of stern stuff. it's a unique place because people take care of their own there. there is more help that needs to happen. we need a larger neighborhood to take care of our own in this case because the devastation has just flattened people already barely hanging on. >> a humanitarian and hands-on parent with a successful career
