"today in the bay" starts right now. busy morning here. good morning monday morning. thank you for joining us. i'm laura garcia cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we have live reports on the olympics. >> that's right. a lot going on there. locally it's heating up. >> yes. it will be a warmer day. like yesterday it was nice and comfortable. expected to be a couple of degrees a little bit warmer today than yesterday. but it's still nice and cool this morning as you out. it's 56 degree and cloudy in san francisco. 48 in the north bay. and $59 in the south bay. heist today reaching upper 80s for the south bay, tri-valley, as well as the north bay peninsula. 68 in san francisco. we'll detail the warm up copping

up in next few minutes. heading over to mike. a typical morning for a monday. >> it is. the chp got a little more crowded. smaller crashes are reported. including the one i'm concerned here. not quite so concern eed becaus the volume of traffic held up. southbound 680 is the big story of the day. jammed up on the issan ramon si. you see clearing at the bottom of the screen. the reason why there's a tree down blocking the slow lane. between of the two major open and aump ramps foothill road is the option to get past the area. more build coming off 580 toward the dublin interchange. not a major event over here. but we follow the bay bridge toll za. the metering lights are on. a new incident in hayward. we'll give you the update for 880 coming up.

another story to update. we have been tracking since we came on-air at 4:30 this morning. it's impacting travel around the globe. right now you're looking at live pictures at frustrated passengers waiting on long lines at sfo. delta airlines with the second largest fleet in the world now says its competers are going back online after a power out age in atlanta that crippled systems everywhere. the ground stop has come to an end, there are major delays in all airports including here in the bay area. delta has been tweeting information all morning because even the website was impacted by the i.t. problem. one passenger of michigan shared this photograph of the handwritten boarding pass he received at heath row airport in london. if you're traveling today, call the airline ahead of time to find out where your flight stands. kris sanchez has been covering the story all morning long. she has live report from sfo.

we'll hear from her in a half hour. more breaking news in oakland. police are scouring a neighborhood looking for a killer in connection with a early morning double homicide. >> "today in the bay" bob redll joining us from from 98th and empire. not too far from the scene. >> reporter: we are a distance away from the scene. it's a few blocks down the way to the left. police confirmed that scene is, quote, very active. this happening around 1:45 this morning in this very small neighborhood bordered by 98, 880, and san leandro creek. it was just before 2:00 this morning, around quarter till there was two people who were murdered. a third person taken to the hospital. you'll see in the video that a car is on fire. it's not clear what lead up to that happening and how it's connected to the double

homicide. two people, again, killed dead on the scene. a third person taken to the hospital with unknown injuries. police told us they have not yet taken anyone into custody. in other words, they are still looking for the suspect or suspects. again, connected to the doubled had taking place in oakland. reporting live in oakland. "today in the bay." >> all right. a lot going on in oakland. two opd officers recovering now after their user crashed into another car. it happened early this morning in the area of 14th and foothill boulevard. the other car involved smashed into a nearby building. the driver of that car hurt. police tell us none of the injuries are threatening. breaking this morning at least one person hospitalized after a shooting outside market nightclub. one person hospitalized. san francisco police aren't saying what lead up to the incident. crews on the scene report a large police presence at the

crime scene at 2nd and mission street. we're on the phone working to get you more information. family and friends are devastated after the death of a bay area athlete shot in san francisco. 20-year-old calvin riley attended delton college. he grew up in san mateo. relatives he was in san francisco on saturday night playing pokemon go with a friend when someone shot him at the poplar aquatic park. the two saw a suspicious man who seemed to be watching him. they brushed it off and continued playing. >> they were walking along and calvin got a few steps ahead of his buddy. his buddy heard gunshots. >> police are trying to figure out if that man on the hill was involved in the shooting. and it was, indeed, a random attack. our own pete is in san francisco this morning. he'll have a live report at 6:45. we're learning new details about the case of 19 people sickened at a birthday celebration in san francisco.

in the mission district a party took a frightening turn apparently after the people ate candy similar to gummy bears. police say there's nothing to indicate that someone purposely tainted the food. so far nothing has been ruled out. >> katie ledecky smashes her own world record. >> smashing her own world record by almost 2 seconds. there's beating the competition and demolishing. that's what stanford bound katie ledecky did last night. gave u.s. the gold for the first time this year. she was celebrating while everyone else was finishing. >> i have a lot more events so i'm very busy here. but i'm still having the same

amount of fun i did four years ago. and team usa is going to do just as well as we did four years ago, if not better. we're having a lot of fun. >> ledecky's olympics journey continues this morning with a 200 meeter free. and team usa's dominance in the pool continued with michael phelps earning his 19th gold medal of his career. nathan adrian celebrating there, too. phelps swam an incredible second leg of the 400. nathan adrian the cocaptain of the u.s. men's swim team secured the victory. a lye look at one of two olympics kacalderons burning. >> jessica aguirre is live from rio. team usa continues to lead in the medal count and looking to add more to the count today. bay area athletes have been stand outs. >> yeah. they have. i got to tell you when ledecky was swimming yesterday and when

phelps was swimming, you could hear the cheers coming from the aquatic center throughout all of olympics park. it was impressive how loud it was. olympics park is open this morning. lots of people here this morning. lots of events already underway. now marty malloy who won bronze in 2012 in london will be competing today in judo. one of these arenas behind me. they're called the care owe can arenas. if she medals, which she has a good chance of doing, she'll be the first u.s. athlete to win back-to-back medals in judo in two olympics in a row. that's huge. yesterday huge was alex massialas, san francisco native. he went into the competition ranked number one in individual men's foil. he wanted a gold. he didn't get a gold. he got a silver, though. but, you know, he made the bay area so proud. he came back with the first u.s. medal for men's individual foil

since 1960. we're talking 56 years and he made the bay area proud and his he made his father and coach, greg massialas, proud. >> obviously i wish i could have gotten a gold but to know i made my family proud. my dad, who has been my coach every step of the way, i couldn't be a prouder son. >> very proud of him. regardless of what happened. he's very sad, of course, but, you know, you always have you think about it you got the silver medal. >> reporter: it was an electrifying match. i was in there watching it. it was so intense watching this phonesing bout. i spoke to greg and he told me the heartbreaker is alex has never lost to daniel garozza ever in the years they've been fencing. yesterday was the first time. for massialas back. he's going to be in the team event. they're hoping to go for gold in that. now coming up today, a lot of swimming going on again.

pakistan... ==1xvidbox== at least 63 people are dead after a powerful bomb breaking news this morning in pakistan. at least 63 people are dead after a powerful bomb exploded on the grounds of a hospital. it happened in southwestern pakistan in a city about 20 miles south of the afghanistan border. explosion happened shortly after a shooting earlier in the day that targeted a prominent lawyer. sources say dozens of lawyers were gathered at the hospital. authorities yet don't know if the two incidents are connected. no one is claiming responsibility. russia's para olympics team

is dealing with its own massive scandal that may shut the entire team out of the upcoming olympics games. they announced across the board ban preventing from all russian para olympians from competing. teams being tied to the doping scandal. about half of russia's olympics team is not being allowed to compete. russia plans to appeal the para olympics ban. the ftc is cracking down on celebrities who advertise on social media. >> it's not always obviously they're getting paid. >> that's right. that's all the ftc wants. advertise all you want. make product mentions all you want. said you're getting paid for it. for most people something like this an instagram posting from this fashion blogger, personally, i think it's incredibly obvious this is an ad for sunscreen. and she has added #ad to the text on the right there. but the ftc said it's not enough.

celebrities, they say, need to be more straightforward and the ftc is cracking down. walmart said it brought jet.com. if you have not heard of it. i'm not surprised. walmart doesn't have a very good online presence and they have to get better before amazon takes over too much of market share. a little trivia. walmart is based in arkansas but the tech department is in san bruno. they're hiring. their website has 33 pages of jobs. the stock markets open this morning after a very strong week. stars next to the s&p 500 and the nasdaq. we saw record closes on friday for both. the first record close, by the way, for the nasdaq since july of 2015. lots of companies are hiring. in the past two months the jobs numbers together with the american economy added a half million jobs. nearly 11 million jobs in the last eight years. even may's lousy number was revised upward. again, it's not what some

politicians will tell you. >> our country is losing its companies. our country is losing its jobs. our trade deficits are massive all the world. >> simply not the case. if you look at a specific job, steel or something. steel jobs are moving to china. as an ag grate, that's not true. >> it's a fact check. a half million jobs in the last couple of reports. >> thank you very much. continuing coverage of wild fires burning across california. first, the soberanes fire is burning near big sir. firefighters are gaining the upper hand. it's 45% contained. yesterday flames jumped the fire line and forced the evacuations at resource sorts like the post ranch hand. those evacuation orders have since been lifted. burning through our north the cold fire is now 60% contained.

all evacuation orders have been lifted there. and in southern california a new wild fire calls the pilot fire is burning in sbernardino count. dozens of homes were evacuated this morning. this fire is burning out of control. it's sad to report. >> it's that time of year. we've seen vicious conditions for fires the last few weeks. things have moderated a bit. we'll see a warm up. >> yeah. last week was the break with the cooler temperatures. it's going to be heating up this week. also, gusty winds. we'll talk about that as we get a live look outside now. mostly clear to start. we're seeing some clouds near the coastline, and that will be clearing out fairly quickly. here is what to expect. 59 degrees in the south bay now. and heading up to 82 degrees. as we go into the day, we'll have clouds near the coast early this morning. and some quickly warming temperatures later on today. and by tomorrow we won't see those clouds as much as a marine layer gets a little bit thinner.

our high temperatures in the upper 80s. and midweek we'll have temperatures backing off. right now we have mid to upper 50s as you head out the door. winds have shifted in direction. now coming in from the north. that is what we'll see all throughout the day. but still pretty gusty up to about 15 to 20 miles per hour and more on the same tomorrow. as we get a look at our what to expect in the tri-valley today. 56 degrees to start heading into the upper 80s today. all of our microclimate showing we'll have some 80s in the south bay. anywhere from 67 degrees in pacifica to 82 in palo alto and upper 60s in san francisco. fairfield will be up to 90 degrees. hayward 78. upper 80s for the tri-valley. as we head over to mike. big slowing for 680. >> you can't get a break for the tri-valley this morning. we'll gv you more detail coming up. southbound 680. we have reports that four lanes are blocked. there are only four lanes of

normal traffic flow getting by on the shoulder or the toll lane. watch for the big slowing. more folks unleashed after the earlier tree was cleared from the pleasanton area. over here the alternate route 880 there's a back up toward 92. a motorcycle driver involved in the crash sitting on the shoulder of the roadway. that's knew for them to sit there. we hope themselves. that's a distractions. the bay bridge toll plaza has the typical back up. and the back up out of the maze is pretty typical. no surprises off the east shore freeway. that's better news. >> thank you very much. 6:21 now. coming up next revealing what people on the peninsula are doing today to bring burned down community center back to life. good morning. the dealer promises a rental car. then that woman is told the dealer is not paying. nbc bay area responds next.

mateo told her to rent a car and she would be reimbursed. she did that. when she turned in and asked for her money, about $2,000. the dealer wouldn't pay. she was told to call corporate in michigan. >> the dealership said that michigan had to take care of it, than said, well, michigan said, well, we need some more information. i said, you know, i just want my money. >> good point. after weeks of trying she turned to us for help. vericom didn't return our house. ford cut her a check. vera com said we have worked closely with this customer every step of the way to successfully reserve her concerns. she no longer has the fiesta. the car turned out to be a lemon.

fog near the coastline and sunshine inland. it's 48 in the north bay. 55 in the tri-valley and the peninsula with highs reaching the upper 80s. mike has a back up for the tri-valley. >> right. it's calm over there. but on my traffic system the same map system, by the way, they're tied together. we have a big slow down. the second of the morning for the 680. the earlier tree has been cleared around stone ridge and the crash happens just about washington boulevard. getting closer toward south of mission there. we're looking at a big back up. some folks want to take 84. we hear that we have four lanes blocked by the overturned vehicle.

meanwhile over here 880 continues to build. holding steady valley wide. a crash south of the san mateo bridge. leaves a motorcycle rider and bike on the side of the row. the rider is walking around which is a big distractions but at least they're walking. there was a minor fender bender reported but not visible in the live shot. the left approach is good. >> thank you for the update. we have more updates to breaking news this morning. anyone flying dell airlines this morning should expect delays. even cancellations as the airline is experiencing a system wide computer failure. >> "today in the bay" kris sanchez joining us live from sfo. what do people need to know if they're planning on catching a flight? >> reporter: the good news the power out age has been repaired.

the system is up and running. look at the lines. the end of the line you can barely see it behind me. as we walk past. these are the folks beingful this porn. though they seem to be stranded. the line goes past the folks sleeping on the floor and in chairs. it wraps around and finally makes the way to the ticket counter where the ticket agents are able to issue tickets to people. boarding passes. they're taking their bags. all of this has been communicated with passengers. in fact, with the media the social media because delta's computer system, the website was down. here at sfo there were hundreds of travelers in line throughout the morning and they've been here since 4:00 this morning. some of them have been here since last night. a few of them didn't know about the glitch until they got here. now, as you mentioned, delta is advising travelers to call before coming to the airport, one traveler said that system is not working either. they're hoping for the best as

they go through security. >> if they can't communicate we call into the system at all. we can't call into the diamond line. >> very surprised. people camped out on the floor. sleeping everywhere. >> now this is one of the more interesting things we've seen today. one passenger rob stephenson of ann arbor, michigan showed a photo of a handwritten boarding pass he got at heathrow airport in london when it began. that's not the case at sfo. s are getting their boarding passes. some folks are very upset. we've seen people crying and sleeping on the floor. but a lot of folks just trying to be patient. one gentleman from birmingham said what can i do? i can't fly there myself. if you are traveling today or in the next coming days where the fall out continues, you might want to check with delta whenever you can. you have rights in this because it's not a storm. it's not a so-called act of god.

presence at the crime seen, which is at 2nd and mission streets. we're also on the phone working to get you more information. 635 now. authorities in the east are saying little about a weekend homicide in the exclusive black hawk neighborhood. deputies discovered a 69-year-old woman dead on quayle run lane near black hawk country club. investigators are calling this a domestic violence incident. the woman's identity hasn't been released. deputies are not saying if an arrest has been made. they're not indicating how that woman died. striking santa clara county court clerks enter their second week on the picket line. they promise to continue their protest against the new county courthouse which is expected to open later this week. clerks walked off the job on wednesday. on friday they were picketing outside the $2 million facility on first street. the union believes that money could have gone to make a better deal for cleshs instead was used

for the new building. the county said state money covered the building costs. back to olympics coverages from rio. a live look at two olympics calderons burning this morning. three days into the competition and bay area athletes are helping team usa dominate those games. >> some performances our own jessica aguirre is live in rio. we talked about the olympics swimmers. some shedding tears other shattering records. >> reporter: good morning. so impressive. it's go time here in olympics park. lots of people still here. just streaming in. events are getting underway as we speak. yes, we have seen some unbelievable action coming from bay area athletes. we saw alex massialas bring silver home in men's foil fencing.

we saw katie ledecky smash it in the pool last night. there's no question that here at olympics park they're crushing team usa. >> team usa making waves in the olympics pool lead by 19-year-old super star katie ledecky will be attending stanford in the fall. she shattered her own world record winning gold in the had 400 free. >> it's great. >> nathan adrian, the cocaptain of the men's u.s. olympics swim team secured the gold in the 4 x 100 relay. michael phelps added a 19th gold medal to his collection. and 28-year-old uc berkeley grad dana was the bronze in the 100 meter butterfly as part of her comeback after having a baby. >> i'm so happy. time wise maybe not so much. to get -- to be be in that field and racing sara. to be at the olympics again it's

amazing. and all i wanted was to get a medal. i'm extremely happy. >> it's her second medal in rio. she won silver in the 4 x 100 freestyle relay. the u.s. women lead every event in the gymnastics qualification. the american women looked almost unstoppable nearly sweeping the qualifying enlts as a team. with simone biles and ally reisman securing a spot. and the ladies team is so far ahead that the russian gymnasts said it's going to be almost impossible to catch up with them. and simone biles proving she may well be the best gymnast of all time. gabby douglas will not be defending her individual all around gold. she's performing well. hushing critics who said she shouldn't have been on the team at all. ladies will be back in rio center arena on tuesday. but the men, they'll be

competing this evening. u.s. men's team now in second place. and then we'll have a lot of action in the pool again today. cal's ryan murphy will be there. misty franklin making her debut. katie ledecky will be back in the pool. michael phelps will be swimming his first individual event at aquatic center. that's going to be nuts in there. just in a little bit i'll be heading over to watch marty malloy, who got bronze in judo in 2012 london games will be going to medal again. she'll be the first u.s. athlete to bring home back-to-back medals from two olympics. that's where i'm headed. >> great place to be. thank you for the details. >> so cool everything going on there in rio. all the talk of pools making us think it's not a bad place to be. >> you don't want to see our 100 meter. >> probably not.

as you watch on television today you'll say, wow, it's raining. or maybe off and on. here is a look at the temperatures in rio today. this is a look at the forecast. it's pacific time. they're four hours ahead of us. they're looking at 70s today. here at home we will have a nice start. some morning low clouds at 45 -- 54 degrees. in san fransisco some upper 80s to low 90s. that's where you'll want to do some freestyle or the breaststroke today. let's head to make now. he has some hope and improvement in free monlt. >> there was a crawl for 680. we're looking over here most of the bay was in a tough drive for 680. i had hopes for improvement. the reports of chp said they're going to reopen lanes before 7:00. it's overturned three vehicles in the crash involved south of mission.

organizers are counting on conditions to settle down later today. for the people alone, bad hair days. >> what is interesting is this is normally their dry season. they normally don't get that much rain a couple of days in a row. it's interesting. they probably picked that spot for that reason. but we are going to have more dry weather here in the bay area. we'll be watching those showers on tv. as we get a live look from mount hamilton. it's all clear across the south bay. but we some cloud building up along the coastline. pretty much the same picture we've seen from the past l of days. as you head out it's 47 in santa rosa. 47 in morgan hill. we have some upper 50s for spots like oakland and concord. winds have shifted direction and coming from the north. we don't have the strong on shore flow that gave us the break from the heat. as we went to the weekend now we're going to see the temperatures warming up at least it will feel breezy to give us a

little bit of a break. expect more of the same tomorrow. a look at the microclimates. pacifica 67 degrees. upper 60s for the financial district. 90 in fairfield today. walnut creek at 88. 89 in liver more. there's intense heat across the desert southwest. we'll catch a break for the middle of the week as cool air drops in. by the end of the week high pressure builds once again. we're shifting back and forth. there will be less marine air for the weekend. the valleys will be heating up into the 80s and 90. it will be nice and very comfortable for the next several days. 70s for the weekend. but for the inland valleys we're expecting those highs to reach into the upper 80s to low 90s. it does get hot this weekend. maybe making plans for a beach trip wouldn't be a bad idea at all. let's head over to mike now for a big change on the trouble on the tri-valley.

a third person was hurt and is in the hospital right now. as you can tell from the video, when officers arrived they found a car fully engulfed in flames. we're trying to learn from police if that car is somehow connected to the double homicide. also, in oakland. two opd officers recovering after their use ecruiser crashe into another car. it happened in the area of 14th and foothill boulevard. the other car involved smashed into a nearby building. the driver of that car is hurt. none of the injuries are considered life threatening. and delta airlines with the second fleet in the world now says its computers are going back online after a power outage atlanta crippled its systems. ground stop has come to an end. there are still, though, major delays, as you can tell from the lines at many airports in the bay area including sfo. if you're traveling today, call the airline ahead of time. back to our olympics coverage as you take a live look at rio this morning. day three of competition is

underway. >> jessica aguirre joins us live more time this morning. jess, give us your assessment so far how the games are going overall and how bay area athletes performed. >> reporter: wow, you have to admit that bay area athletes are doing fantastic. the medal count is great. and, you know, so far if you ask the people in the park how they think the games are going, they'll tell you they're having a wonderful time. if you go to the venues, whether it was men's basketball the other night when the usa team was playing or last night at the pool when you had ledecky and phelps swimming. i mean, the area in those centers is just electrifying. the fans are excited. you know, the athletes are just doing fantastic. and i have to say, having the opportunity to be able to watch them break those records and then be able to speak to them after and see these accomplished young people breaking these records is just phenomenal. you can't help but get caught up in the excitement yourself. it's just great. so far so good. >> there you go.
