competition is on tap coming up in a live report. "today in the bay" starts right now. a very good now tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we have a lot to get to this morning. mike is tracking developments on the roadways. we're going to get to that in one second. first, though, summer, i wouldn't say it's winding to an end but a lot of kids are going to be back to school and starting to feel like summer. >> i got the letter that orientation starts next week for school to start. yes, looking at these temperatures thinking it is not seem like it's about to start. with the school year. so we do have a lot of 90s in the forecast. we'll talk about that as we get a look at all of our microclimates now. nice and cool to start. 56 degrees in the tri-valley with highs there topping out at 90 today. mid 80s for the north bay and south bay and 79 today in the peninsula. so we will take a look ahead to some more 90s over the next several days. let's get an update on that
5:01 am
crash now in hayward. >> kari, this is where i hate to start the morning with the deadly crash we had to report off the nimitz freeway in hayward. the speed sensors around the bay and not a lot of slowing including here although we do have two lanes that will be half of your northbound direction. closed for a period of time this morning. in just a short time ago we did have lanes reopen. this is just knot of industrial parkway. but bob redell is out there at the scene because, bob, even though the lanes are clear the investigation continues. what do you have out there? >> well, good morning to you, mike. even though chp and the wreckers have removed the vehicles from the lanes of traffic at northbound 880 at industrial boulevard you can see that the vehicles that were involved in this fatal collision are still on the scene. you're looking at a box truck. that box truck around 2:00 this morning had three men in the cab and they unfortunately collided into the rear of a disabled big rig. this big rig was disabled on the right side of northbound 880 just before industrial boulevard here in hayward.
5:02 am
one of the men in that box truck ended up dying. the other two transported to the hospital with major injuries. and the driver of the big rig, he ended up smashing his head into the windshield of his vehicle so he was also transported to the hospital. the condition of him is unknown. but you have one dead, three taken to the hospital, again, after a sad accident this morning here in hayward. this is not having an impact on the morning commute. at least not as yet because as you were mentioning, mike, within the past 15 minutes they were able to get the vehicles out of two right lanes that had been shut down for some time. right now the vehicles are on the shoulder. and it does not appear to be having any effect as far as looky lous slowing down to look at what it is. reporting live in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." we have more breaking news this morning from san francisco and specifically fisherman's wharf where burglars used a van to smash into an electronics store this morning creating a

5:04 am
it goes in to tonight as the team leader and also for the first time ever four leading, leading in four events as well. if the u.s. wins gold it will be the first back-to-back olympic team to win gold in gymnastic in history. in 2012 we called them the fierce five. i think going forward we may have to call them the phenomenal five. let's talk about michael phelps. the most decorated olympian of up a time. his rivalry goes in the pool today though. he's going to be swimming against a rival of his, south africa's chad la coy. a lot of trash talking between the two in 201. michael phelps will face-off with him tonight for the first time since london. let's talk about katie ledecky. ledecky is back in the pool with 200 meter free. toughest test of the games so far for her. but ledecky, will probably pull off a gold in this one as well. then the ladies soccer. that's going to be super thrilling. it's going to be a hot one for the ladies. they are facing off against
