fatal accident along your morning commute. that story coming up. and live look at sfo this morning where the problem is fixed but the fallout far from over for delta air lines which is forced to cancel several hundred more flights today. "today in the bay" continues right now. >> very good tuesday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. more on the trouble with passengers still today but our heat most certainly taking flight. we check a quick check of the weather with kari hall. >> temperatures will be warmer today than yesterday. you only notice it a few more degrees. especially for those inland areas. we will have a lot more sunshine after a cloudy start to this day. it's 50 degrees in the north bay. 56 degrees in the tri-valley with highs there reaching 90. some mid to upper 80s for the south bay and north bay. the peninsula at 79. 70 in san francisco. now as we head over to mike, he's got a new crash in hayward. >> that's right. we're focusing on your morning

commute and overall things look predictable. south bay just a little bit for 101. no problems for the peninsula. and it is over in hayward where we see slowing. same thing for pleasanton. both for southbound 880 and 880 what you're looking at. commute direction in toward fremont. a crash right here. south 880 and 92 looks like everything is off to the shoulder. no major issues. distraction at that critical point with that transition over to the san mateo bridge. south is industrial parkway. heading northbound. that's where we had an earlier issue. i'm saying there was another crash for hayward. for more on what happened on that crash scene, we got the update, laura. back to you. >> we've been following it. breaking news all lanes of northbound ol through hayward, good news, back open this morning. take a look. a big rig and box truck collided. one person was killed. several others hurt. "today in the bay's" bob redell has been following this story. bob, while the lanes are clear, the investigation is just beginning. >> reporter: it is. good rn morning to you, laura.

one of the vehicles involved in this early morning crash. still off to the shoulder of northbound 880 just before industrial boulevard. you can see the overpass right there in the foreground. the yellow lights of that semi are one of the vehicles that were involved in this crash. it took place just before 2:00 this morning. there was a box truck which has since been moved from the scene. three men in that box truck heading north when they slammed in the back of this big rig that was stalled on the right side of the interstate. unfortunately one of the men in that box truck was killed on the scene. two others taken to the hospital with what has been described as major injuries. and then you have the driver of the big rig who was in his cab and his head smashed in his windshie windshield. he, too, was also taken to the hospital. his condition unknown. horrific accident here. the scene has been cleared for quite some time. as you're driving northbound on 880 you might still see that big rig. does not appear to be having any impact as far as looky loos

during the morning commute. live in hayward, bob redell, "today in the bay." more breaking news in san francisco. this is a live look at the damage left behind after a suspect drove a van through the front of electronics store not far from fisherman's wharf. it happened at the digital center store at jefferson and lea ven worth. the steves took off with merchandise. a security guard at the scene tells us there was another attempted break-in at this same store civil months ago. pete suratos is looking to find out more from police right now. he's going to join was a live report at 6:30. delta right now scrambling to get thousands of grounded travelers back in the air this morning. a story that we started following yesterday when it happened during "today in the bay." this is live look at sfo where our own kris sanchez is speaking with passengers. sfo just one of the many airports that was affected by this computer glitch when a fire at delta's atlanta hub triggered a computer glitch that effected

airports all over the country and the world yesterday. computer systems were working again within a few hours. but the damage was done. a thousand flights were canceled nationwide. the delta's challenge today is to find enough seats on planes during a very busy summer vacation season. to accommodate the tens of thousands of people whose flights were scrubbed. kris sanchez will have an update from sfo in our next half hour. 6:05. hayward residents are on edge in the wake of a surge in deadly violence. three separate shootings killed three people in just a 24-hour period. the most recent shooting actually happened saturday when a 17-year-old boy was killed outside a home. two other teenagers were wounded in the attack. the day before 18-year-old man was shot to death in a car. that same day, a man was found shot and killed in his home on lane. a woman was arrested but no one is in custody in connection with the other killings. >> we had multiple in a day or multiple at an incident. but never that many incidents

within a 24-hour period or, you know, for that matter in a week. >> hayward had seven homicides this year. four of them just last week. police say witnesses have come forward and they're looking for more help. developing story right now out of southern california where firefighters continue to battle an out of control wild fire in san bernardino county. hundreds of firefighters are on the front lines. thousands of people are fearing for their homes. this one is called the pilot fire. it's burned more than 6,000 acres so far with no containment in sight. 375 homes are under mandatory evacuation orders with another 5,000 under a voluntary evacuation advisory. the cause of the fire is under investigation. one of the most scenic and famous highways in the country we've driven thousands of times is closed right now. but it's supposed to reopen any time. parts of highway one are shut down from a big wildfire burning near big sur. high winds last night prompted the closure in both directions. between pal lo colorado road and

north coast ridge. we hear it's supposed to hope again by 6:00 a.m. the soberanes fire has burned more than 60,000 acres since it started two weeks ago. firefighters say it is now 50% contained. firefighters gaining ground on the cold fire that's burning in yolo county with full containment expected tomorrow. the 6,000 acre fire is 80% contained. it sparked last tuesday but investigators are still not sure what started that fire. it destroyed two structures. right now to our coverage of the 2016 olympic games as we take a live look from rio de janiero this morning. the sun is shining. the beach below is packed. and more olympic dreams are about to come true as there are a handful of must see events taking place in just a matter of hours. >> jessica aguirre is out and about in rio de janiero this morning with more of what we can expect to see today. good morning, jess. >> good morning, laura and sam. what you see behind me is the

way they do a charitable contribution or interest on their mortgage. for a middle class or upwards family it's big savings. the problem is that people who need the break most probably don't pay federal income tax. about 45% of all americans. they pay payroll tax, they pay sales tax for sure. but they can't deduct something tr their federal income taxes if they don't have a federal tax bill in the first place. another surprising statistic was that one out of every five households in america doesn't work. one in five american households, he says, do not have a single member in the labor force, he said. these are real unxwloumt numbers, he said. this is actually totally true. i double-checked with economists at the department of labor. i was surprised. but totally factual. trump's speech in detroit was guided by new panel of economic advisers. we made a collage for of your but only one of whom is an economist. one of them are women.

yesterday. after these morning clouds we will get some sunshine. so we're in for another sunny day. it doesn't look like it now as we get a look at the view from the outer sunset. clouds and low deck and mist and drizzle may be in that spot, too. 58 degrees. it will continue to warm up. it's 58 also in concord. and san jose, 57 degrees. palo alto, 55. and 58 degrees in napa. waez go through the day in oakland, morning low clouds. 60 degrees at 8:00. lunchtime, you will take it outside, 67 degrees. some low 70s for the early afternoon. but then we will see it cooling down once again. up to 89 degrees today in los gatos. san mateo, 75 degrees. marina, 63. 85 in napa. fairfield tops out 90. also have 90 in livermore. and in hayward today, 78 degrees. this area of low pressure well to the north of us. having a little bit of an influence in our weather. at least gives us a northerly wind. turns more onshore as we go into the day tomorrow which helps

bring our temperatures down just a few degrees. but then by the end of the week, this high pressure moves in very quickly causes the air to sink and we don't have as much of an onshore flow. it will allow the temperatures to boost up just a few more degrees. mott much of a difference though in san francisco. up to 70 degrees today. and then some upper 60s for the weekend. the inland areas, 90 today. 87 tomorrow. a nice little breeze. and then we will be back in the 90s. mid 90s with the hottest day. looks like on saturday. that continues into early next week. now as we head over to mike, he says there's a new issue for the tri-valley. >> it will be for folks who are not yet on the freeway but this is a concern right through pleasanton. looking at your maps. we see a smooth flow of traffic. south bay coming up. of course tracking that crash in hayward which hasn't profit ven to be a problem for 880. over here, the issue. stanley is a major cut through through the area of pleasanton and it's lever more and that's where there's a problem reported

just typical pattern there as you travel through san jose. the rest of silicon valley is an easy flow of traffic. light right now. but i'm headed back to you guys because you have breaking news. we've been following this all morning. update to breaking news. look at the damage left behind after suspects drove a van, plowed it through the front of an san francisco electronics store and then took off. pete suratos is live not too far from fir efisherman's worth wha. >> the smash and grab robbery, here's that broken storefront window of the digital center of the electronics center at jefferson and lea vens worth. the white get away van of the suspects was used to break that window and that pole is still inside the store. we have video of sfpd on the scene. according to police they're

looking for three suspects. a security guard in the area that i spoke to off camera said the white van was parked on the curb. when he heard the store alarm go off and he called 911. amount of goods stolen is unknown. remember, it was only a week ago we saw a smash and grab robbery at an antique store in the city near jackson and montgomery streets. those burglars stealing more than $50,000 worth of antique items. as i mentioned, this is still under investigation. if anyone has information on the robbery, contact sfpd. live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." 6:32. now to the latest developments surrounding delta air lines. the airline already canceled hundreds of flights as it tries to recover from a massive computer glitch. the problem left thousands of travelers stranded at airports across the country. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been tracking this story since our show yesterday morning. live at sfo again. how is it looking out there so far? >> well, it's a little rougher

than we expected this morning. the line starts here and it goes all the way across. it backs up to the other entrance to the airport. it circles around before folks can get to the booking agents. and believe it or not this is actually an improvement over what we saw yesterday. delta is limping toward recovery today. already today though, 300 flights are canceled. airlines saying it needs the time to reset and get crews where they need to be. that's on top of the more than 1,000 flights that were canceled on monday. and the thousands upon thousands that were delayed. now, the travel waiver is still good through friday. that covers change fees. so anyone who needs to change their travel can do that without any cost. and believe it or not every single person in this line is now entitled to a travel voucher of $200 because their flight was more than 3 hours delayed. that is little comfort to people miss work and big family ents. >> just go with the flow. what else can i do? i can't fly my own jet back to

birmingham. >> i don't know whether to go back home and say forget the family reunion or stick it out. >> reporter: so he did stick it out. i just talked to him this morning by phone. he is in pittsburg after spending zub night in a chair here in the terminal rebooking. he finally made to it that family reunion. 19 hours late. he says he has a lot of making up to do but he's also rethinking his travel. despite the fact he gets a travel voucher from delta because of the delay he may take amtrak back from pittsburg to the bay area because this was such a frustrating situation for him. we have talked with folks who have been here since sunday as well. we've also talked with folks who have connecting flights in other delta hubs. and so they have delays that will happen later on in their travel itinerary. definitely folks are trying to get where they're supposed to be. scott mcgrew was chuckling at how i described it. there are fewer people crying today and there are some open

seats where people were sleeping yesterday. perhaps that little metric of improvement. at sfo, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> a little bit of improvement on the crying scale. kris, thank you very much. new details on what sickened 19 teenagers and many children at a party in san francisco. investigators now say that it was candy laced with pot. partygoers were enjoying a qu s party. 19 people showed up at a half dozen hospitals in san francisco, all expressing similar symptoms. 13 of the patients were children. one was only 6. >> the gentleman was holding his chest and then the young lady was gasping for air. she couldn't even talk. >> officials say the gummy rings tested positive for thc, the main ingredient in marijuana. investigators say that the

oakland catering company provided that food but an inspection did not find any evidence that cannabis was used. all 19 patients are out of the hospital. police in ve anybody shah are trying to track down a tourist vis ting from china. police say 19-year-old wang was last seen by his roommate and was supposed to return to china with his traveling group on july 30th. he left the best western about 10:00 p.m. on july 28th. authorities don't suspect foul play. wang is about 5'4" and apparently speaks little to no english. the city of richmond recently made a quiet but unprecedented change to police department to reportedly improve transparency. the east bay times is reporting three months ago the department hired a civilian to oversee internal affairs. that position is commonly held by a sworn officer. the department hired 57-year-old eddie aubrey. former police officer, prosecute, and judge.

richmond is to believed to be the second city to implement this policy change. raising serious questions from the san francisco's public defender's office. prosecutors are investigating this photo. public defender's office said someone spotted the handwritten sheet on the court clerk's desk. the list had space for witnesses to sign in and column titled, bad guys to indicate which case they were there for. the public defender worries defendants are presumed guilty. in a statement the da's office said, quote, this is not how we train our employees and we have no reason to believe this was created by our assistant district attorney. at 6:37. now a story you're only going to see on nbc bay area. a solution is in the works to clean up toxic wastes that's believed to be contaminating a stretch of the san pablo bay. the wastes dates back decades where a smelting plant once operated. when it shut down abruptly in

1971, 2 million cubic yards of toxic wastes were simply left behind. last week california's department of toxic substances control announced a long-term clean-up plan. residents are hoping the clean-up comes quickly. >> i think the whole thing was out of sight, out of mind. >> the waters here, we seat if fish, we eat the food. >> experts say the sigte is particularly problematic because the wastes contains heavy metals, including lead and arsenic. scientists are turning to an old source to get a better grip of algae growth in lake tahoe. researchers announced the lake's water clarity is worsening. they're less certain about all gee growth because it's only been monitored for is a years. get out the old photo albums ba they would like to look at ph o photos from tof the lake to get better sense of the historic algae levels. the team is working with

and get that gold. >> reporter: the americans grabbed more gold in the men's 100 backstroke, too. cal swimmer ryan murphy charging from fourth to first in the finals. david boudia and steele johnson finished with silver in synchronized platform. santa clara kerri walsh jennings and april ross had little trouble putting away china under the lights of copacabana beach. >> we have five more matches. >> reporter: swimming stars michael phelps and katie ledecky won't have to wait that long. they have another chance another gold in the olympic pool tonight. so tonight another opportunity to see michael phelps in the water and make that phelps face and make what gesture he makes when he does his wing span and spreads out. that it is going to be a big draw. we were in the aquatic center last night and people were going crazy when phelps came out. also, big huge draw tonight, ladies team gymnastics. they are going for gold again.

the coastline. right now it's 59 degrees there heading up to 85. it will be reaching into the oughtitys once again for many inland areas. and tomorrow a stronger onshore flow brings those temperatures just back down a few more degrees. the rest of the week it will be getting hotter. more 90s. so as you head out right now we have some upper 50s all across the bay area. going into oakland, some morning clouds and lunchtime temperature at 67 degrees. 70 degrees at 4:00. and we'll eventually make it into the mid 70s there. but gilroy today up to 91 degrees while palo alto, that 79. and valley today, 66. santa rosa, 86. and hayward today, 78 degrees. you see this wide range in temperatures. mainly some 70s along the coast and some low 90s for some of those spots that usually get pretty hot. high pressure the well off towards the west of us. low pressure is to the north. we will have an onshore flow day tomorrow that will bring down

those temperatures for a little while. but then the heat will build by the end of the week. and it continues into next week. so look at what else to expect in san francisco. 70s today. 54 degrees tomorrow. and then making it into the mid to upper 60s for the weekend. and we will have more of some heat for the valleys. and look at saturday, up to 94 degrees. that's definitely a pool day or a day maybe to head to the beach. something to cool off. well have some more summer weather into the start of next week. now as we head over to mike, he has an update on another problem for the east bay compute. >> we saw the slowing heading toward the san mateo bridge. not necessarily because of just that crash that i was telling you about. as we look at the south bay and peninsula, those are predictable patterns. same thing for the tri-valley. over here southbound 880 where we had repeated problems. that crash at 92 is not given the chance to create a problem because of the disabled vehicle here southbound 880. that's what's causing the issue. that was in lanes for a few minutes, about 20 minutes there.

hopefully off to the shoulder. i'll get the update from chp. see this flowing from 238. overall the traffic is holding up light for a tuesday at this time. so that's keeping things calm right now through hayward. flies flow toward the bay bridge. metering lights are on but toll plaza. let's show you the peninsula side. this is southbound 101. see how that lane shifts. folks know that south of university. have a little bottleneck going on right now. about 20 minutes earlier than we typically see. note that heading down into a south bay. san joebs rg south bay, northbound route starting to show that volume again. slowdown from 680 up to 880. traditional pattern for 87 and 85 as well. i'll show that map to you coming up. back to you. santa clara buses right now getting a makeover. it means a cleaner and greener ride for south bay commuters. transportation authority is getting $2.5 million from the federal government to purchase a fleet of zero emission buses. that money is also going to go to buying charging stations,

truck sadly killing one person. three other people were injured including the big rig driver. an investigation into how this happened is now under way. breaking news in san francisco. this is a live look right now at the damage left behind after suspects rammed their van through the front of an electronics store not far from fisherman's wharf. this happened at the digital center store at jefferson and l leavenworth. we're trying to figure out exactly how much was stolen. hayward residents are on the edge in the wake of a surge in deadly violence. three separate shootings killed three people in a 24-hour period. this is a map of all three locations. the most recent shooting happening saturday when a 17-year-old boy was killed out side a home. two other teenagers were wounded in the attack. day before, an 18-year-old man was shot in a car. that same day a man was found shot and killed in his home on thorup lane. a woman was arrested for that

crime but no one is in custody in connection with the other killings. >> we've had maumt million in a day or incident but not that many incidents in a 24-hour period or for that matter in a week. >> hayward now has seven homicides this year. four of them just last week and three in less than two days. police say witnesses have come forward and they're looking for more help. laura, at first it was a little puzzling but now we have new details on what sickened 19 teenagers and many children in a party in san francisco. investigators say it was candy lace with pot. partygoers were at the women's building on 18th street in the mission's district on saturday. many of them ate gummy rings. then suddenly got sick. officials say the gummy rings tested positive for thc. obviously the main greent in marijuana. investigators say an oakland catering company was the one that provided the food and an inspection afterwards did not turn up evidence that cannabis was used there.

all 19 patients are now out of the hospital. 6:58. quick check of the forecast with kari hall. >> it will be a hot day. getting ready for the temperatures inland to really start to heat up today. but just a few degrees over yesterday. right now it's 56 degrees in the tri-valley. 59 degrees in the south bay with peaks of sun. a little bit more cloud cover at the coast. clears out for a high of 76 in san francisco. >> generally a light day on the roads but a couple of incidents in hayward you've been watching. >> you just talked about the deadly crash. that has been cleared from the northbound side of the nimitz. the map shows you no really unusual patterns but the big slowing right now is indeed in hayward. southbound. unrelated to that first early morning crash we talked about. issue at wynton where we should have all lanes cleared. off to the right-hand shoulder. the distraction slowing you from 238 down toward 92. and slowing once again down towards the dumbarton bridge. also the northbound routes of course through the south bay.
