vehicle right art fifth. it's gotten back on and off the freeway. the latest is over in the oakland hills. let's show you the map. also talking about a crash. there was a car that was hit by that vehicle being pursued around fifth. no major injuries. and pursuit continues so it came across the peninsula, originating in menlo park at 2:45. making its way up up and down 880 and 24 and highway 13. may be another fender bender over there as well. hitting on the city streets in oakland and oakland hills. track that and getting the latest update. chp continues this pursuit. that is the big issue. the rest of traffic moves smoothly. very clear at the bay bridge. kari, how do those skies look today? >> the skies look good as of now. we have some clouds along the coastline and some clear skies for the inland areas. temperaturewise it's been in the 50s and it will warm up as we go into the day but not as warm as we've seen recently. it's 51 degrees now in the north bay. 57 degrees in san francisco and the tri-valley.

up to 87 degrees in the tri-valley while we'll have upper 60s for san francisco. and 78 degrees in the peninsula. so we'll talk about a warmup with highs hitting the mid 90s. i'll tell you when coming up in a few minutes. now back to you, sam and laura. >> thank you. developing story in the south bay this morning where a serial shooter continues to terrorize a very popular san jose neighborhood. ten occupied cars have been hit on or near blossom hill road, close to monterrey road, just in the past three months. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is there live. kris, police are reaching out to the community to help solve this mystery. i know you have driven this route several times. i do it weekly. >> reporter: i do. i think we've actually done it together. this is a really busy stretch of roadway, laura. you know, it's three lanes in each direction between monterrey and poughkeepsie road which is where police have been canvassing the neighborhood looking for clues. as they've been trying to find the clues they've also come up

with new cases. as you said there have been ten in all so far since may. the most recent happened just on friday. all but two of them have happened in the same hour that is between midnight and 1:00 in the morning. the shooter is firing a single shot at moving cars. now, no one has been shot but there have been two people injured because of flying glass or metal. people hope that police track down that shooter before someone gets seriously hurt. >> that's a coward. that's a coward out there doing something they ain't supposed to be doing. and whoever he is, he's going to get caught. >> it's better to avoid the situation. >> reporter: now, it is hard to avoid this area all together though because it is a major thoroughfare between monterrey road and poughkeepsie road. san jose police have been in the neighborhood, in the businesses and the parking lots, notifying

people, asking people for information. what they haven't revealed to us or the public though is what kind of weapon we're talking about. whether it is something like an air soft rifle or whether we are talking about a handgun or some sort of rifle. at this point that may be one of the clues that they're holding close to their chest in order to track down that shooter. but, they do remind folks if you know something you should say something. and you can do that anonymously. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> certainly some urgency here, kris. thank you very much. we are expecting reaction later this morning from san bruno city leaders to pg&e being found guilty of criminal charges tied to the deadly 2010 pipeline explosion. jurors found the utility guilty of six criminal charges. they included obstruction of justice during the san bruno investigation. some of the other counts were tied to pipeline safety violations. critics are infuriated because pg&e is only going to have to pay at most a $3 million fine. >> we hope the judge sends pg&e

a message that it's not okay to risk people's lives by having inadequate records, manipulating the data and misleading federal investigations. >> during jury deliberations prosecutors drastically reduced penalties from what could have been a possible $500 million. pg&e did pay a separate $1.5 billion fine issued but the cpuc. but no employees ever faced criminal charges. our bob redell will have a live report for us coming up in the next half hour. happening today, sentencing for a drunk driver who killed a union city marine just home from afghanistan. jurors last month convicted alexander yon of second degree murder and gross vehicular manslaughter. two years ago his car struck and killed lance corporal andrew silva in fremont. silva was riding his motorcycle when yohn ran a red light while trying to evade police.

yohn kept on going but eventually crashed into a pole. silva left behind a wife and 2-year-old son. we now know when embattled santa clara judge aaron persky is going to issue his next legal decision in a sex crimes case. he issued too lenient of a sentence to former stanford swimmer brock turner. turner sexual assaulted a woman passed out 15 days from now persky is going to be considering whether or not to reduce that sentence of a man convicted for possessing child pornography. in that case persky sentenced the man to a four-day jail sentence when he could have received up to a year. the man wants his sentenced to reduce to just a misdemeanor. two mothers whose loois were shatter i'd by the berkeley balcony collapse will push for new safety regulations in sacramento. six students died including donahoe from rono park. later today her mother and mother of an irish exchange student who was seriously injured will testify before an assembly committee. the pair will speak in support

of new legislation calling for greater oversight and more transparency in the construction industry. one last piece of history about to go away. demolition work at the old bay bridge hits a major milestone later today as we look live right now at the bay bridge where in just a few hours crews are going to start dismantling the last big piece, that final truss of the eastern span. caltrans is removing the fifth and final truss of the bridge. 504 feet long, 80 feet high. like the others before it it's going to be lowered on to a barge and cut into pieces before being hauled away to pier 7. the entire process could take up to a week. it will mark the completion of the second phase in a three-part process to dismantle the old span. our pete suratos is there this morning and will have a live report in half an hour. strike up the music. boy, certainly golden star for team usa. live look at the olympic torch this morning as we enter day five now of the summer games. today the americans are expected

to keep that golden trend going. >> nbc bay area anchor jessica aguirre joining us live right now. first, jess, a couple stories developing. the weather and some scary moments for several reporters in rio. >> reporter: yeah, this morn very soggy here. windy, rainy, and cold. the people coming in to the park, olympic park, are coming in all hooded up with umbrellas and their hood covered and so some of the events so far canceled. rowing is what we know of the morning session still unclear if anything else is going to be canceled and whether the afternoon session will be canceled. there is a cloud hanging over the olympic park today. because of that incident you referred to that happened on a media transport shuttle bus. let's show you what it looked like. there were reporters moving from one venue d odoro stadium to the broadcast center in olympic park when the bus, the glass

shattered. it was hit by something. there are some reports it may have been gunfire. other reports it was just rocks. either way, that media transport bus did suffer some sort of an attack on it. reporters had to dive down to the ground. there were a few minor injuries just from glass shatter. there is an investigation into what happened on that bus. let's accentuate the positive now and the women's gymnastics team which rocked it last night. the ladies now have back-to-back gold in team. first time in history. >> super hard transition now. back off. >> reporter: power, grace, and gold. >> i'm so happy to be a part of this team with all of these incredible girls. >> reporter: the final five as they've dubbed themselves leaving no doubt that they are the best in the world. with the simply dominant performance in team gymnastics. michael phelps, the most deck quor rated olympian ever added gold medals 20 and 21 to his collection with an emotional win in the 200 fly avenging a loss to rival chad le clos two years

temperatures, today, too. it will be warming up as we go back to rio to get an idea of what kind of weather they will see today. off and on showers. keep in mind we're looking at this in pacific time but they're four hours ahead of us. as we go into the noontime hour, 71 degrees. this is normally a dry time of year but we're not seeing much of that. high temperatures here at home. a little bit cooler than yesterday. and some spots cooler than afternoon. we'll talk about that warm upcoming up in ten minutes. mike has another update from that chp pursuit in oakland. >> that's right, kari. we got to this portion of the video here. this is the car we've been talking about. chp has been pursuing this from the peninsula in menlo park across the san mateo bridge over to oakland at times the person waving something outside their window. getting off the freeway. near the fifth embarcadero

off-ramp. i want to stick with it. this is going on the city streets now. meanwhile that car did hit at least one other car. we know that because we saw the aftermath. this revehicle, opposite side o the freeway. chp helping the person involved. you've got to get off the freeway because all of these cars are behind you and active pursuit. chp gets -- the officer gets in the car and tells the person get in your passenger side and drives him safely off the freeway. watching out for everyone's safety. that's why they're keeping a 1500-foot buffer on the freeway. the activity now from what i hear, the latest is just off of highway 13. near old tunnel road. this is no longer a problem heading toward the caldecott tunnel. sounds like everything is on city streets. this car was slowly rolling on three rims and one tire. so this is a problem that continues to slowly roll throughout the east bay. back to you guys. >> i would say, you can't go far like that. thank you. >> 2 1/2 hours this has been

58 degrees in livermore. a cool 51 in santa rosa. winds will start to shift from the north and coming in to a westerly direction. lit be breezy enough to help make you feel much more comfortable. we will see the same thing again tomorrow. but it will be starting to inch up temperaturewise in just a few more degrees. looking at oakland today and what else to expect, it will be 60 degrees with mostly cloudy skies early in the day. and then reaching into the upper 60s, low 70s just briefly. up to 81 in los gatos. pacifica up to 50 degrees. upper 60s in san francisco. 87 in fairfield. walnut creek, 80 degrees. dublin, a high of 84. there's still some very hot weather across the southwest. for us our weather is coming from this area of low pressure well to the north of us as the winds increase and we'll be in slightly cooler today. then that quickly moves away and high pressure will build just to our south. and creating less marine air and the valleys heating up into the

80s and 90s. for san francisco, not much of a change in temperatures over the next several days. in fact, even into early next week you still keep those 60s. be we will have some mid 80s today for the inland valleys and reaching into the mid 90s for not only the weekend but into the start of next week where we won't see that heat backing off for quite a while. now let's head over to mike for an update on that pursuit. >> chp has a suspect in custody. that means the pursuit is over. we look over here. focused on the surface streets off of highway 13 and 24, the last we took a look. from what i understand, now the activity has stopped on tunnel road. but it has not far from the caldecott tunnel. it's probably right over where the tunnel goes through the hills there. but again, this is not affecting highway 24. it's on surface streets that chp pursuit is over. we'll get more detail as the investigation continues. our crew is on the scene right there. as we look at the rest of your bay i want to show you overall things are very calm right now. aside from what was going on

calling eight miracle that nobody was injured when a large piece of concrete fell 30 feet off of a building on to a busy street. university avenue. this happened over the weekend when a decorative cornice feld off the historic bank building. years of water seepage could have been the culprit of this. so now engineers are keeping a close eye on this building which first opened in 1906. >> the building owner is working with the team to make sure they are re-enforcing any of the concrete to that we don't have a situation like this in the future. >> engineers indicate that building is still structurally sound even though, as you can tell from the video, you can see cracks in other areas of the facade. they believe the piece that fell was in far worse condition than the other cornices on the same building. 25g team usa keeps striking gold. back out to rio when our own jessica aguirre is covering all action. >> it's soggy start today.

mid 90s. i'll talk more about that and when that's coming up in a few minutes. heading over to mike now. things are now calmer on east bay freeways. >> we have that video of the pursuit. the weird slow speed pursuit that had been going on for hours started on the peninsula. menlo park side. came across the bay. ended up on the east bay hills. now all the activity has freew. pete is live. what do you have as far as the follow-up? >> reporter: good morning, guys. slow speed chase. about two-hour long slow speed chase. here off of tunnel road on caldecott lane. and here you've got the suspect arrested not too long ago. we're still trying to firm up the details exactly what was wrong with this driver, if this was a driver that we're talking about, i do know when we saw him during this whole arrest he was panting. there he is trying to catch his breath at this time. we have highway patrol here. we have contra costa county sheriff. trying to firm up the details on

what led to this chase. we're hoping to get an update from chp shortly. but that slow speed chase has ended off of tunnel road just off the caldecott tunnel. once we get more details we'll bring them to you. live in oakland, pete suratos for "today in the bay." now to news on the peninsula. six years later, and the verdict is in. pacific gas and electric is found guilty of obstructing justice and obstructing an investigation. following the deadly san bruno pipeline explosion. this morning we're expecting to hear reaction from the city. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live if bob, the verdict might bring closure to the people of san bruno. >> reporter: good morning, laura and sam. later this morning the city of san bruno will respond to that pg&e verdict at a news conference schedule here at city hall behind me for 10:00. yesterday a federal jury found the power and gas utility guilty

of a total of six criminal charges, namely five counts of violating the pipeline safety act and one count of obstructing justice during the investigation into the gast pipeline explosion that leveled the san bruno neighbor hood six years ago. it killed eight people, 38 home 'the federal prosecution was initially seeking a penalty of over a billion dollars. this would have been on top of the $1.5 billion fine that the state has already imposed on pg&e. but then without explanation the u.s. attorney reduced the maximum possible fine the yunlg can impose on pg&e to just $3 million, which has people in san bruno outraged. >> we hoped the judge sends pg&e a message that it's not okay to risk people's lives by having inadequate records, manipulating the data, and misleading federal investigation. >> i'm sure that all the utilities in the united states are going, wow, we better get ahead of this. so that's a good thing there,

too, to probably get them all to clean up their act. >> reporter: pacific gas and electric has released this statement. quote, we want our customers and their families to know that we are committed to reearning their trust by acting with integrity and working around the clock to provide them with energy a that is safe, reliable, affordable, and clean. reporting live in san bruno, bob redell, "today in the bay." now to a developing story out of the south bay where a serial shooter has struck again in san jose. now a total of ten occupied vehicles have been hit on or near a very busy road, blossom hill road, near monterrey road in the past three months. that vehicle shootings began in may. police say that there were three more shootings in late july and two more last week. the shootings have all happened after midnight in an area that some neighbors now avoid after dark. >> it's better to avoid that situation than run into a situation and think what you

should do, right? we all have families so we have to worry about it. >> police aren't releasing any information about the weapon. only that each time the shooter fireds, just once at those passing cars. two drivers have been wounded by shrapnel or flying glass. police say they're making annual out effort to catch the shooter or shooters but hope that someone in the area can provide a tip to help them solve this mystery. we'll have a live report from kris sanchez coming up in our next half hour. activists plan to hold a silent march tonight in the north bay. organizers are angry about a recent job promotion from the deputy who shot and killed 13-year-old andy lopez in santa rosa in 2013. you'll recall lopez was armed with an air rifle when he was shot. the deputy was never charged. in may according to the sonoma county sheriff's department he was promoted to sergeant. protesters tonight plan to meet at santa rosa's fremont park. it's 5:35. two chp officers are recovering after a crash in the south bay

that reportedly involved a drunk driver and the situation could have been a lot worse. the mercury news reports the officers were at the scene of a crash involving three cars on highway 85 just south of union avenue. while everyone was out of their cars the chp says a suspected drunk driver plowed into one of those vehicles. the chain reaction crash injured the officers who were thrown to the ground. the mercury news reports the worst of their injuries was a possible sprained ankle, thankfully. follow up to breaking news we brought you right here on "today in the bay" yesterday morning. take a look at this surveillance video. this is that smash and grab burglary at an electronics store near fisherman's wharf in san francisco. you see the video showing four men. they used a van and long pole to take out the front of the digital center. the thieves then entered the store, grabbed electronics and just took off. so far no arrests have been made. right now back to our rio olympics coverage and it's day five of the summer games. the americans just keep on collecting the hardware. >> that's right.

they've got to have a lot to wear. live look at rio this morning where another winning day could be in store for team usa. nbc bay area anchor jessica aguirre is live there now with what competitions are on tap today and some that are canceled because of the weather, right, jess? >> yeah, the weather is nasty here today in rio. it is cold. it is wet. and it is blustery. in fact, people coming in to olympic park are all coming in with their hoodies, rain ponchos, and their umbrellas. the weather in rio has been unpredictable. sunny one day, rainy the next. what has been more predictable is the u.s.' domination when it comes to the medal count. 26 so far. way ahead of china which is in second place with 17 medals. the women last night were the stars, taking back-to-back team gold. today though it will be the men with the individual rounds. and we have california guy up for medal contention. his name is sam maculec from

southern california and nicknamed hollywood. he's a two-time olympian and he is hungry to get his first individual medal. the women will be back in the pool as well with a 4 x 2 free relay. stanford's katie ledecky is there. franklin was the world champion in 2013 in the free but she has struggled during this olympics. the other day she was teary saying that she had let her team down. also in the pool on the men's side, nathan adrian from cal out to defend 100 free olympic title. adrian cut it very close yesterday in the preliminaries but he will be swimming. let's talk about beach volleyball that's up today as well. santa clara native kerri walsh jennings and new partner april ross. they have their final group match today at copacabana beach. it's unclear if that's going to be played because it's open door, out in the sand. we'll keep you posted on that. and then it is do or die for the men's u.s. water polo team which is led by stanford's tony.

philip dutton, with his horse mighty nice. dutton has won a team gold before australia, then became a u.s. citizen a decade ago. >> it's special. you know, i had a great time in australia and helped them secure some medals and now it's really rewarding to be a part of the american eventing and hopefully this is not the last one. >> there you go. come on back. dutton says the competition was neck and neck and says, yes, he does plan to return to the olympics again. nice. meantime, while we talk about the olympics, the u.s. women's gymnastics team are on top of the world after they take home gold in the all around team event and success is inspiring gymnasts across the bay area. >> so impressive. self proclaimed final five may be the best gymnastics team ever. it seems to be the most inspiring to the next generation. calls are pouring in to local gymnastics studios. this happens every year. we see it as we have covered the olympics for years. turns out a lot of little girls olympic dreams of their own.

to cool off today. >> it's going to be warm. especially inland areas today. you will notice that it will be a little bit better than yesterday heading into the next civil days. that is when the heat will start to crank up. live look outside now. san francisco, you can see clouds. also a little bit of sun peeking through. we will see a mix of sun and clouds throughout the morning and a bright sunshine through the rest of the day. we're heading up to 67 degrees. cloudy with a cool start. becomes sunny and comfortable with a breezy wind. and then the warming trend begins, especially inland. along the coastline, san francisco, you won't notice much of a difference over the next few days. we're talking about some mid 90s for the valleys into the weekend. so right now as you step out it's 63 in concord. palo alto is at 56 degrees. and we have 56 also now in morgan hill. in san jose we have a few clouds in the forecast early but then it starts to really warm up. by lunchtime, 75 degrees. which will still feel very nice, especially with the breezy wind

and some highs hitting the low 80s. the winds start out coming in from the north and turn more onshore as it picks up later on today at 10 to 15 miles an hour. a nice breeze both today and tomorrow. tomorrow you will notice it will be warmer, especially for those inland areas. and gilroy today will top out at 79. 78 in palo alto. and valley today, 67 degrees. upper 80s for fairfield while napa is at 79. and walnut creek, 80 degrees. and pleasanton, high of 85. still some hot where are across the desert southwest but for now we're being pluns the r influenced by this area of low pressure bringing in a stronger onshore flow today. and then by the end of the week, high pressure builds. we will have less of that marine air. in san francisco once again, not much of a difference between today and the weekend with some 60s. but we're going from the mid 80s for the inland areas for today. up to 94 degrees on saturday. and it still says hot armily next week. now let's head back over to mike with a calmer look at the commute.

>> that's right, kari. after the early morning slow speed pursuit finished and now pete has that follow up over there in the east bay hills. following the rest of your pattern and that's what you would expect to see over here. we're going to zoom in over toward the slowing for 880. nimitz down typical through hayward and union city. not too severe. not affecting yet the volume of traffic heading across the san mateo or the dumbarton bridges. tri-valley, slowing as well. pleasanton in towards sunol for southbound 680. couple issues. debris off the dublin interchange and tire off to the shoulder down towards pleasanton. 880 oakland past the coliseum. northbound with the taillights. southbound with the headlights down toward the san mateo bridge or the bay bridge again for the northbound direction. the bay bridge toll plaza is where you have the crowd because the metering lights are on. no problem for the east shore freeway. again, the maze is clear. the activity after that pursuit is off the freeway on tunnel road. back to you. >> looks like it's getting busy. so far no word of injuries or damage from a moderate earthquake north of the bay

reporter stephen stock joins us to explain. >> good morning. you know this new report by the pacific institute backs up what we discovered during our investigation, that when it comes to water here and who gets it, all is not equal in the bay area. east palo alto is now using 100% of its water alottment from the san francisco public utilities commission. that means that east palo alto has to put a freeze on all future development even though the city right now needs more jobs, more opportunity, and more industry in order to grow its economic base. right now east palo alto gets about 7 1/2 times less water than its neighbor palo alto. nearby six times less than mountain view and about half as much as santa clara and stanford university. critics charge that subtle racism could have played a role 30 years ago when these water agreements were first decided. but officials say racism plays no role now and they vow to fix these problems. several cities including palo
