centers in san francisco is now the scene of a violent crime. acovered at a mall stairwell. police is going through surveillance video trying to find clues. on the peninsula, mourners are coming together to remember a local athlete killed while just playing on his phone in aquatic park. in rio, the competitive spirit is burning this morning as is the olympic flame. the american swimmers got more medals while the men's basketball team tried to find its rhythm. today. >> it will be warmer than yesterday. that will be the trend over the next few days. heading into the weekend and looking for a hot one, effort inland areas. getting a look outside now at all of our microclimates. it's 67 in the tri-valley. and 51 degrees in the north bay. the same start we had recently with low clouds near the coastline and mostly clear skies. it all clears out today with some more sun and up to 9 is degrees in the tri-valley. we'll lack ahead to this weekend coming up. mike is still tracking what's happened earlier in san francisco. >> we had a full closure of a connector ramp. critical one. i was worried about this transition from southbound 101 basically off of octavia getting on to eastbound 80, your skyway 80 toward the bay bridge. connector three minutes ago reopened. i suspect on the lower deck. if you want to stay clear of remaining activity take fourth. good on-ramp. and tracking issues on the east

shore freeway. there are a couple of crashes there. we'll see what we find through our live camera. back to you. now, to this developing story. mystery still unraveling this morning inside one of the bay area's busiest shopping malls. police are trying to figure out how a body ended up inside westfield center on market place. >> bob redell is live there now. bob, police are classifying this as a homicide. >> reporter: yes, they are, sam and laura. they will not say how this man was killed, only that he was 30 years old and he was white. someone found his body yesterday morning around 10:00 behind a set of doors on the back side of the bloomingdale's shopping department store which is part of the westfield shopping center in the downtown area of san francisco. he was found in a stairwell inside the store. this is a stairwell that anyone can access from inside the mall. the doors which can only be opened from the inside are a back exit this lead to an alley

way which is scald just east. bloomingdale's employees say their management sent them an e-mail indicating the victim is not a co-worker, not a bloomingdale's employee and advised them not to talk about what happened. people who work in the mall are avoiding stairwells and are pairing up when they have to go outside. west westfield management released a statement that reads, the center is open and operating normally, and we are cooperating fully with the investigation. police tell us they are we viewing footage several security cameras installed throughout the property to see if those recordings give them an inkling into what happened. coming up we'll hear from people who have been shopping at the mall since this horrible discovery yesterday morning. reporting live in san francisco, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thank you. mourners are going b to holding a viewing and vigil tonight for the bay area athlete shot and killed in san francisco's aquatic park.

family members say 20-year-old calvin reilly was playing pokemon go with his friends when a gunman opened fire seemingly at random. so far there have not been any arrests in this case. reilly graduated two years ago. mourners are going to gather tonight at church for the viewing and vigil. his scheduled is tomorrow. new warns for pokemon go players that may be easy crime targets. police in berkeley are reminding you to remain aware of your surroundings after two recent robberies and another attempted robbery on the streets of berkeley. in each case the victims were playing pokemon go before they were attacked. in the last case on monday the target managed to fight off his attacker in civic center park. a man accuse of sexually assaulting a woman waiting to cross the street is now in police custody. sunnyvale police say last thursday the woman was walk in the area of sunnyvale and evelyn avenues when a man grabbed her

and she screamed. a bystander held the man down until police arrived. authorities say this is the suspect, 34-year-old huylan nguyen. the woman does not injured. a story we first broke last night. two men caught for stealing jose conseco's bat. this is one of the men actually caught in the act. it happened in the parking lot of the pittsburg hampton inn. that is where the former a's superstar were staying. a manager spotted them while monitoring hotel surveillance cameras. as for the 52-year-old conseco he was empathetic but we saw the pictures of the guys afterwards. poor guys, they just look hungry. let them go. >> they got their bats back in time to use them at the game last night. as we told you earlier he's playing for the birg diamonds, independent minor league team. they lost to the vallejo admirals. in other sports news, rio

olympics and the americans continue to swim in the gold. thanks to a strong finish from 19-year-old katie ledecky. she picked up her third gold medal of the summer games last night. >> continuing history there. "today in the bay's" jay gray is in olympic park tracking the action for us. >> reporter: the road to rio paved with gold for u.s. cycling star kristen armstrong winning the olympic time trial the day before her 34rd birthday, making her the only olympic cyclist to win three straight golds in the same event. they found silver in the green waters of the diving pool. the best finish ever for synchronized springboard team. and the women's 4 x 200 relay finished strong. katie ledecky swimming anchor leg for a come from behind win from australia. a bit of history follows michael phelps every time he dives into the pool.

. coming up on a quarter to 5:00. what kind of outfit are you going to need for today? middle of summer. it's kind of pleasant. >> you start out with a jacket and then something that you can take off later on today and then wear maybe short sleeves that will be a wide range in temperatures from the morning into the afternoon. unless you're along the coastline or in san francisco. right now as we take a live look outside over san jose, a mostly clear start. coast at clouds. 57 degrees with a high today, hotter than it was yesterday. up to 88 degrees. we will see the temperatures continuing to climb as we go into the next couple of days with just a little bit of a

wind. and thenford weekend it will well above normal. i don't think we will set any records but it will be hot with mid 90s inland. looking at where we are now, 57 degrees in concord and livermore. 59 degrees in oakland and palo alto. 57 in san jose once again. so looking at what to expect as we go into this afternoon. some upper 60s in san francisco. palo alto is up to 82 degrees. oakland at 74. 93 in fairfield. we'll also see more 90 frz concord down to livermore. and morgan hill up to 84. our winds are still going to bring in at least a little bit of a breeze today. and the morning clouds will see will quickly get out of here for afternoon sunshine. winds picking up to 10 to 15 miles an hour. we'll see the same thing again tomorrow but the winds start to shift a little bit more from the north and that will help those inland areas to really heat up. so expecting some 60s over the next several days in san francisco. no major changes there even as

we go into next week. you will see the most dramatic difference in our temperatures from what we will see for the inland areas reaching into the mid 90s by saturday and sunday. and that's just around hot weather through next week. now as we head over to mike, he's got some flashing light on the east shore freeway. >> we had a number of reports over there for interstate 80 traveling through berkeley. the rest of the bay hasn't had much op an issue although hear about a car broken down over here in the mountain view area. we'll check on that. i'll give you more detail. here by ashby and powell, scene of two earlier crashes. either side of the roadway, westbound and eastbound. eastbound getting away from the bridge. now, look at the live camera. both cleared from the roadway. activity on the shoulder is just about gone. arrows pointing over moving folks one lane over to your right use travel away from the bay bridge. that's eastbound 80. that's still going on. some lane restriction but not a problem because it is westbound. that's the commute you also see

the judge decide that twitter cannot be held liable because it only offers a platform for speech, it doesn't create it. and blue pet products raising guidance after the lating earnings beat expectations. the stock has been largely trading below its debut price. buffalo -- blue buffalo trading higher on the news. >> landon dowdy, thank you very much. also new this morning we have new findings just released on how dangerous road debris can actually be for other drivers. researchers at the aaa foundation looked at four years of data and researchers found an average of 50,000 crashes per year across the u.s. are linked to just having debris on the roadways. that includes more than 500 fatalities over that time period. and nearly 40,000 injuries. researchers say about two-thirds of debris related crash rest from poor car maintenance or

drivers improperly securing their loads. >> one thing drivers should look at, you know, would i feel safe with one of my family members driving behind me on the road? that's really how security should make sure the road is before you get on the road. >> that report also found nearly four out of ten deaths in road debris crashes where the result of someone swerving to try and avoid hitting an object on the road. they say overreacting at the last minute to avoid debris can make a bad situation even worse. 4:49. continuing coverage, the contract talks. expected to resume this morning between striking santa clara county workers and management. yesterday both sides agreed to mediation. the union which has 380 members walked off the job last wednesday. it's creating a lot of problems including delays in traffic court and inmates not being transported in for court dates. going to court now, the owners of a high price san francisco high rise that is literally sinking are now looking at a mountain of legal battles. tests show the millennium tower

on mission street sunk 16 inches and tilting to the side by two inches. four law firms and one person who lives in the tower have filed a lawsuit. they're asking for $500 million. the architect nor the building's owners are commenting on the lawsuit. millennium tower association which commissioned the testing is commenting. saying in part, the association remains fully focused on completing its investigation, determining the appropriate scope of repairs and recovering the necessary repair costs from the responsible parties. a mystery in the water off monterrey coast. the discovery beneath the surface that now has aviation experts puzzled. happening right now, facebook's ban on private gun sales is tested and fails. back in january the social media giant moved to ban private gun sales on all its platforms but it its enforcement of that policy has been lax at best. you can find that story now on

behind bars after what's being called one of at 4:53, dozen of known gang members are behind bars after what's being called one of the largest raids in contra costa county's history. to prevent gang members from being tipped off hundreds of officers from several different agencies hit 20 locations across contra costa county all at the same time. the fbi and bay area police talked about this raid for the first time yesterday even though it happened act a week ago.

they arrested 24 suspected gang members. >> involved in everything from drug sales to pimping and pachbderring and human trafficking and obviously violence. >> authorities believe that stop of the suspects are also linked to the recent string of east bay freeway shootings. but they didn't give any further details about a connection. the craigslist is trying to bring wi-fi to some of san francisco's lowest income residents. a little later today craig numar is expected to launch a free public wi-fi program in san francisco's tenderloin. the service will be introduced as part of a partnership with st. anthony 's church along with social services for the homeless. all right. historians interested in what's happening right now. caltrans crews are making headway on removing the last truss, the last large truss on the old eastern span of the bay bridge. work began yesterday and it may last up to a week to finish. this is the largest remaining

section of the old span. crews are still in the process of lowering it on to a barge. the truss is going to be cut into three smaller pieces before it gets hauled away to pier 7. it will be fully dismantled and that is the end of that era. >> and that piece of the truss as well. for those if you were here, i was here for the '89 earthquake that fell apart and cars went into the lower deck there. >> wow. that's certainly a part of fabric of history. your grandmother -- >> helped build the bridge. he worked for the steel company that built that bay bridge. >> amazing factoid. 4:55. >> mysterious discovery under the waters of monterrey bay. >> look at this. scientists discovered part of a jet engine. it was found back in 2014 during the dive near santa cruz. the fellows were just made public this past spring on aviation web forum. with help from noah it was determined the engine came from an f-8 crusader like the one seen here used in the 1950s and
