get used to those 90s. we'll see them more as we go into the next several days. i'll talk more about that. also head over to mike. he's tracking a lane block in mountain view. >> we saw something on the map that just popped up during the last report. 101 near shoreline. we'll look at the entire bay. there you go. nothing exceptional about the sfeeds. watch out for the point in mountain view northbound 101 and the shoreline off-ramp. we have your slow lane blocked by one vehicle. no reports of anything else going on. even though traffic breaks but chp arriving on scene. the rest of the bay moves well. look at silicon valley coming in farther south bay. northbound 101. it was a closure overnight in the 85 split off from 101 and a crew still in the area may be moving now because we see the slower sensors showing up. we'll track that and make sure there are no major delays in the area. back to you. a developing story right now and a very disturbing discovery in one of the bay area's busiest shopping malls. right now police are sifting

through clues trying to figure out how a body ended up inside of the westfield san francisco shopping center. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell is live there now with details being revealed about the investigation. very concerning. so many people go there. >> reporter: a lot of people do. but in spite of that the mall has been opened since yesterday since this body was found. behind a set of doors east of the alley way just off mission. the back side of the bloomingdale's in the westfield shopping center. this body discovered behind a set of doors in a stairwell attached to bloomingdale's. police are only telling us that they, yes, believe it was a homicide but not saying how this person was killed and not even saying who she was except for that he was 30 years old. obviously no arrests as of yet. that's one reason why police have been reviewing security footage. there are several security cameras in and outside of the property to try to give them a better sense of who this person was and how they were murdered. now, we did hear from bloomingdale's employees.

they say that their management sent them an e-mail indicating the murder victim is not a co-worker, not an employee of the store. and advised them not to talk about what happened. people who work in the mall are now avoiding stairwells and pairing up when they have to come outside. but as i mentioned, in spite of what happened yesterday, the mall is still open for business. >> makes you feel unsafe to come shopping. >> it's terrible that you can't go in there, anywhere safe. even around a lot of people. >> westfield management is not talking about what happened but they did release a statement that reads in part, the center is open and operating normally. and we are cooperating fully with the investigation. again, into the death of a man whose body was found in a stairwell in the bloomingdale's shopping area. this is a stairwell that is accessible to anyone once you're inside. reporting live here in sf, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you very much.

it's 5. faulty wiring is what's attributed to a massive valley wildfire. four people died. more than 1200 homes were destroyed. the man was nowhere near the fire when it started but investigators say homeowner john pinch had improperly wired a hot tub at a home he had owned in cobb one year earlier. he was in santa clara at the time the fire broke out. lake county residents say the findings are very difficult to swallow. >> it's really upsetting to find out like hundreds of people lost their houses for a hot tub. but i don't know. i guess accidents happen. nobody's perfect. >> investigators say that pinch admitted to the faulty wiring and it's still possible that some criminal charges could be filed. investigators also point out that that fire did little damage to the property where it began. more news will hold a viewing and vigil tonight for

the bay area athlete shot and killed over the weekend in san francisco's aquatic park. family members say 20-year-old calvin reilly was playing pokemon go with friends when a gunman opened fire. seemingly at random. so far no arrests have been made. reilly graduated two years ago from sara high school in san mateo where he played baseball. mourners will gather tonight for the viewing and vigil. his funeral is scheduled for tomorrow. san francisco police right now are investigating a brutal attack where they say three men put a bag over a woman's head and then proceeded to viscously beat her. this happened 6:30 p.m. on tuesday as that woman was walking near larkin street and golden gate avenue. the chronicle reports the victim was suddenly hit in a head, had a bag thrown over her head and was punched repeatedly before the suspects ran away. she had bruises and cuts to her hands and face. police say the men didn't steal anything and that that attack appears to be random. looking through surveillance video to tried and identify her

attackers. to a story we broke ast night. two men arrested for stealing jose conseco's bats. this is exclusive video showing one of the men caught in the act. it happened in the parking lot of the pittsburg hampton inn where the former a ease superstar was say staying. the two men didn't get too far. manager spotted them bhil monitoring hotel surveillance cameras. as for the 52-year-old conseco, he was actually sympathetic. >> i saw the pictures of the guys afterwards. i said, poor guys. they just look hungry. let them go. >> conseco's got the bats back in time to use them last night. plays for diamonds. they lost to the vallejo admirals. rio olympics coverage continues as we take a live look at the olympic torch this morning and right now team usa continues to leave the rest of the world if its wake as we enter day six of the summer games. the americans are dominating on the medal count with the most

golds across the board. >> nbc bay area anchor jessica aguirre has been tracking all the action since the very start. jess, bay area athletes helping to add to that medal count. it's so fun for us to see. must be great to have you there. >> oh, it's so fantastic. bay area athletes are doing fantastic. what a difference a day makes. yesterday it was rainy and blustery. and today the sun is peeking out, which is good news for the crew teams because rowing is back on for today. some of the events had to be canceled yesterday because of head winds but there are six medals up for grabs today in crew, rowing. they have done a condensed scheduled and they will have rowing back on today. here at olympic park it's going to be all about gymnastics tonight. it is a big, big night for gymnastics. it is women's individual all around and of course three-time world champion simone biles is looking to add to her rio haul

with the gymnastics title against 23 of the world's best and her closest competitor, her own teammate, aly raisman. and michael phelps and ryan lochte will be racing against each other. it's a historic rivalry but they are big buds. the pool legend will be facing off in the 200 means 200 meter individual medley. lochte holds the world record but phelps has three straight golds. listen to this. phelps and lochte, either one of them have done this event 12 of the last 13 major competitions. they go back and forth in this. also in the pool tonight, two cal olympics ryan murphy and jacob pebably who both made their debut in rio and advanced to the 200 meter backstroke semifinals tonight. now, people say that murphy is such a nice young man he is so excited he's got two gold medals and for pebly, he was fuelled to

get to these olympics by the death of his mom ten years ago. so he says he's going to make it count. and you can count on them doing that tonight. >> could be even emotional for him, no doubt. >> such inspiration. jessica, let me ask you. you mentioned the fact that the u.s. women's gymnastics team is going to be front and center. they look hike they're having so much fun. are people there saying this is probably the greatest team they've ever seen? >> oh, that is without a doubt, sam. everyone who sees them says this is probably the best, the final five. probably the best team that's ever been put together and simone biles all over the place. people say she is probably -- even people who have done gymnastics say that she is probably the best gymnast they've ever, ever seen. and she will probably prove that tonight. >> she is absolutely fascinating to watch. i mean, the strength and power of what she can do. it's so much fun. great games. thanks a lot, jess. running out of superlatives

support is waning. his attacks. so today clinton in the midwest talking jobs. trump in miami with homebuilders, both of them trying to convince voters they can fix if economy. >> thank you, tracie. from the economy to legitimate concerns about national security. and a california judge says twitter cannot be held responsible for messages from isis. >> tom mcgrew, the ruling you say is inevitable. >> the way american law works. we talked about this before, safe harbor. the judge dismissed the case. the lawsuit was filed in federal court in northern california by the family of a contractor killed by isis. they provided examples. you can see the twitter logo there with the isis flag. the family claimed twitter's service helped recruit and motivate isis fighters. but internet companies are generally protected from such claims. the law called safe harbor. if i post something on twitter i shouldn't, that's on me, it's not on twitter.

calling it the netflix of china. it's been hiring american engineers like mad. well, word this morning it's going to open a $2 billion electric car factory in china. and if you're saying to yourself, hold on a minute. why would a netflix company build cars? that's a good question. le eco is a mystery company. one we will be watching. in the meantime they are hiring and they pay well, which is a good thing considering bay area home prices. coming up, jaw dropping numbers, the sort of things that make you say, now, hold on, how is that even possible. we will talk about these numbers coming up just before 6:00. >> i got a peek at those numbers. it's amazing where we live. >> right. >> after prices have come down a little bit, too. at least the soaring rates have moderated a bit. >> just unaffordable. it's not a matter of how much money you make, it's when did you buy your first house. if you're older you have a house, if you're younger, you don't. >> you can't save fast enough to get in.

all new this morning. new findings just released on how dangerous road debris can be for other drivers. researchers at the aaa foundation looked at four years of data. they found an average of 50,000 crashes per year across the u.s. are linked to debris on the road. that includes more than 500 fatalities over that time frame. almost 40,000 injuries. researchers say about two-thirds of debris related crashes are from poor car maintenance or drivers improperly securing their loads. >> one thing drivers should really look at, would i feel safe with one of my family members driving behind me on the road. that's how secure you should make sure the load is before you get on the road. >> researchers also found almost four in ten deaths in road debris crashes were the result of someone swerving to try and e avoid an object on the road at the last second. overreacting at the last minute to miss debris can be worse. it's back.

the perseid meteor shower will fill the skies. it's called an outburst shower because of gravity from jupiter pulling multiple media streams together. sky gazers will see 160 meteors an hour around 1:00 a.m. tomorrow and saturday. i like the after effects because i do see them driving to work. we get up so early. >> focus on the roadway, young lady. >> i do. it's hard not to make the wisheses. >> how much can you actually see at 1:00 a.m. >> i think you will be able to see a lot inland. if you're along the coast, it's like normal where you have the low clouds and fog. you won't be able to see that much. that's something we will be watching. the climbing temperatures. we will have a little bit more in the way of clear skies. high pressure continues to build. live look outside at oakland and we see we don't have a completely clear start but we will start to see the clouds moving in as we go into the morning as the sun rises. as far as temperatures now, it's

59 degrees there. also seeing some upper 50s elsewhere across the bay area. morgan hill at 54 degrees and 50 degrees now in santa rosa. and looking at the forecast for san francisco today, it starts out mostly cloudy but it doesn't last long. and our temperatures reach into the mid to upper 60s. it will be 63 degrees at 1:00. at 5:00, very nice evening as you head home from work with the windows down. taking in all of that sunshine. as far as our winds start out from the northwest and turn more westerly into the day. and the winds pick up, especially for the east bay and also over towards the delta where our wind speeds will be about 20 miles an hour with higher gusts. sustained winds at 10 to 15. more of the same tomorrow but i it won't be as windy. that's when the temperatures also continue to climb. 90 in los gatos. 80 in san mateo. embarcadero, 66 with mid 80s for the north bay. oakland, 74. pleasanton, a high of 91

degrees. statewide we're still looking at some intense heat for the central valley and while we will have a nice little break right in near the meet coastline the inland areas will be where we'll watch those temperatures really start to climb. so looking at some 60s in san francisco. for the next several day, but you will see the highs building to the 90s for the weekend. up to 94 degrees on saturday. heading over to mike checking in on slowing in san jose. >> that's right. we saw this earlier and it looks like it might be sticking around for a few more minutes. most of the bay not a major issue. zoom in toward 101 into the 85 split. we had the traffic jamming up toward the off-ramp which was closed overnight. now that reopened. we have a little slowing but better than before as far as the speeds reading up coming in toward that split. the slower speeds might be because of the crews are moving but we do have lanes open on the approach to san jose chlks show you the foster city side and san mateo bridge. westbound with all these headlights moving at speed to

silver spring maryland - where a lateht following developments in silver spring, maryland, where a late night explosion leveled an apartment complex in the d.c. suburb. new information is coming up every few minutes right now. here's what we know. three firefighters have been injured along with at least 30 residents. you see people displaced from their apartments there. emergency crews say the explosion happened before midnight and apartment complex just outside of washington, d.c., silver spring, maryland. the explosion could be felt more than a mile away. there's also reports that some of the trapped residents had to toss their children to the ground below. no deaths have been reported that the point. up to seven people though are not yet accounted for. it is 5:25. southern california judging yesterday upheld the death sentence for serial killer who murdered nine women and a teenage girl.

superior court judge issued the sentence for lonnie franklin jr. known as grim sleeper. franklin killed over a span of over two decades in south los angeles. investigators still believe he may have killed up to 25 women. jurors in june recommended the death sentence. the judge yesterday rejected frachk lynn's motion for a new child. burglary at an apple office landed the thieve behind bars. he led authorities on a high speed chase. they apparently weren't too hard to spot because the deputies saw a computer and a cord hanging out of the back of the truck. when he stopped the vehicle three people ran. one right into a san jose starbucks. >> he kind of like screamed in frustration and ran around the corner. can you guys, please open the bathroom for me. ice water. open it for me. >> starbucks employees said half a dozen officers rushed in, tackled the man, that man identified as richard deshenaro.

degrees. not much a different there but you will start to feel it in the tri-valley. 91 degrees. we'll talk more about some 90s in the forecast. mike is also tracking what's happening in the tri-valley. >> looking at the rest of the bay. i don't care for the hot weather. looking at the rest of the bay. we don't have a lot of major slow downs. we have one in the tri-valley. as kari mentioned, westbound 580 coming up toward north livermore avenue. the crash is blocking one lane. i hear there's debris because there was a single car, i think it hit the center divide. there might be piece on the roadway. chp is on scene. maybe cleaning stuff up. we don't have a lot of detail. the bay bridge toll plaza has slowing building here. the cash lanes are backing up because the metering lights just turned on. back to you. thanks, mike. 5:31. happening now, remembering a young athlete. tonight friends and family will gather to honor the life of 20-year-old calvin reilly who

was shot to death while playing pokemon go in san francisco. >> "today in the bay's" pit suratos is live from san mateo where that vigil will be held tonight and, pete, this comes as the family still waits to find out if the killer is going to be found. >> reporter: that's right. u.s. park police aring loo for that suspect and the family of 20-year-old calvin reilly believe that this was a random attack and they're going to be holding that private vigil for him at st. gregory's church right behind me in san mateo. reilly was a graduate of sara high and a baseball pitcher at san joaquin delta college. according to the victim's family, reilly was simply hanging out with a friend on saturday night near eye quaut tick park playing pokemon go when he was shot and killed. we spoke to a family friend who said reilly will be remembered as an efrl who liked to build people up. >> always had positive things to say about everyone. had an amazing work ethic. it was a great baseball player. represented sara high school

very well. >> reporter: u.s. park police are still looking for that suspect and a tip line has been set up. we have that information for you on our website at nbcbayarea.com. live in san mateo, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you, pete. on the heels of that news, new warns for pokemon go players, they can be easy crime targets. police in berkeley reminding players to remain aware of their surroundings. really anywhere for that matter. but there in berkeley there were two recent robberies and another attempted robbery. in each case the victim was playing pokemon go before they were attacked. on monday the target managed to fight off his attacker in civic center park. a gruesome discovery at one of the most popular places to shop in san francisco. the westfield center shopping mall there, a body inside of the center was discovered in a stairwell. police are now calling this a homicide. they say someone found a 30-year-old man's body just after the mall opened about 10:00 yesterday morning.

the mall employees say that body was inside a stairwell next to a back entrance adjacent to bloomingdales and off an alley. word of the investigation writ now is obviously that shoppers were very uneasy learning about this. >> makes you feel unsafe to come shopping. >> it's terrible that you can't go anywhere safe. even around a a lot of people. >> westfield management isn't talking about what happened but did release a statement that says, in part, the center is open and operating normally and we're fully cooperating with the investigation. dozens of known gang members are behind bars after what's being called one of the largest raids in contra costa history. to prevent gang members from being tipped off hundreds of officers from several agencies hit about 20 locations across contra costa county. all at the same time. the fbi and bay area police talked about the raid for the first time yesterday but it happened a week ago. they arrested 24 suspected gang members. >> involved in everything from

drug sales to pandering as well as some human trafficking. also obviously violence. >> authorities believe some of the suspects are also linked to the recent rash of freeway shootings but they didn't get any more details. follow-up to a story we first broke in june. new fallout for two oakland officers accused of sending racist text messages. we learned the officers are facing suspensions. those messages were allegedly sent by police commander tony jones and four other officers. we obtained exclusive copies of the texts which included images of the ku klux klan and racial slurs. the city of oakland now says it's concluded its investigation and the specific officers involved are facing the suspensions but they have not been named. contract talks are expected to resume this morning between striking santa clara court workers and management. yesterday both sides agreed to mediation. the union which has 380 members walked off the job last

of the women e's 4x200 relay by maya dirado from stanford as well. dirado will swim the third leg with katie ledecky anchored. the legend of ledecky continues to grow. trailing by half body length when she dove in. ledecky propelled team usa to gold and she did it going away -- way out. her third gold of the games dirado's first, the santa rosa native, has a nice collection. one of every color. she has a gold, silver, and bronze now. kazakhstan's first olympic gold ever in the 200 meter breaststroke on thursday. the headline, cal josh prenot. he got a silver medal. 200 in breaststroke since mike won in 1992. and hanson grabbed a bronze in 2004. kyle's nathan adrian barelied a vanzed in the 100 free but won his heat in the semis and was

morning show the dangers roadri new findings just released this morning show the dangers of road debris can have for drivers across the country. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in san jose from a car with numbers that came in overnight on a dangers that a lot of us see every single day, kris. good morning. >> good morning to you, sam. we're on 280 south driving southbound as you say we will say alan has both hands on the wheel this morning. we are going off -- right there. so already this morning we've seen construction debris, we have seen tire, bumpers. but mike inouye can tell you that at least once a day there's a lot around the bay area freeway. that can be really dangerous, especially when some of those items falling off of vehicles are bigger than that. we have video of some of the larger items that you may see coming off vehicle, mattresses, and other furniture, calling off of car or trucks.

lawn clippings and trash and really unlucky people have found themselves behind unsecured porta-potties. cord to aaa between 2011 and 2014 road debris caused some 200,000 crashes. 3900 people were injured and 500 people died because of crashes involving road debris. in more than a third of those cases, that's because the driver overcorrected, swerved and caused the crash. according to aaa the majority of these crash rest preventable. >> what we found is that two thirds of all road debris is actually caused in some way by a vehicle. now, whether that's not properly maintaining the vehicle or parts are actually flying off or not properly securing the loads. >> so, secure your load, that means use sturdy straps and a tarp. small items that could fly off. drive defensively. leave enough space in front of

you and next to you so you can get out of the way if something falls off. maintain your vehicle, because your tires, if they blow out, they can lead to road debris, the exhaust system can come low and can fall off the vehicle as well. by the say, even if you don't hurt yourself or another driver, if something comes off off of your vehicle it could still cost you because all states including california have laws that say if something falls off of your car you are going to get a ticket. so be careful as you drive out there and don't be surprised. mike inouye says debris is on the roadway because it happens all the time, maybe just secure your load this morning and make sure that whatever is on the roadway doesn't belong to you. on the road, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> all right, always a lot of things out there, thanks, kris. now to the fight against zika. later today we're expected to get an update from the national institute of allergy and infectious disease on the status of the virus as it spreads into the united states. mostly through south florida.

wi-fi to some of san francisco's lowest income residents for free. a little later today craig newmark is expected to launch a free public wi-fi program in tenderloin. that service is going to be introduced as a partnership to st. anthony 's church which runs a popular meal program and social services for the homeless. nothing free about this. home prices in the bay area are at new records. >> that's right. scott mcgrew is here to tell us about it. breaking your own rules. >> i am breaking my own rules. i try to stick to one set of data when it comes to house prices. i'm not giving you data from study after study day after day. i like to stick to the case shiller numbers. but the numbers from the national association of realtors were so astonishing. san jose is now the most expensive housing market in the nation. and the first market to see the median price of a home go over a million dollars. a million dollars, first time in real estate history.

right behind that is san francisco. and then anaheim, $742,000. the three most expensive markets are all in california. now, i would have guessed the most expensive median price would have been in palo alto. incredibly high prices there, right? in fact, one of the city's planners just wrote a public letter of resignation saying she spends more money on rent for her palo alto home than she makes. da kate downing sefrs on the planning and transportation commission says if things people going as they are, yes, palo alto streets will look like they did decades ago but inhabitants, spirit, sense of community will be unrecognizable. so she's moving her family to santa cruz. she can't afford palo alto. she went to columbia law school. we're going the tweet out a link to the open letter. you can read it. maybe you could retweet it as well so people -- already did. very good. the markets have been at or near

during a dive near santa cruz. the photos were just made public this past spring on an aviation web forum. with help from noaa the engine game from an f-8 crusader like the one here. researchers believe it took off from move fit field and studying crash reports for more information. 5:51. we're inching closer to the 6:00 hour this morning. mornings are always great in the bay area. nice and cool. the warmups happening and then later. >> yes, it will. especially inland today. along the coastline you won't see much of a difference in san francisco. you're still going to be in the 60s. but let's get a look at the sun rise this morning as we get this day started over san jose. all clear skies and we will have more sunshine as we go through the day. and we start out with some 50s. 57 degrees with a high expected to reach 88 degrees today. so it will warm up very quickly. and we will see those temperatures continuing to climb

over the next few days with a lot of sunshine and very little wind. this weekend it will be well above average but i don't think we will set any records but we will continue to have highs reaching into the 90s even to mid 90s. right now as we all step out the door it's in the 50s. and our winds start out light and variable with a little bit of low clouds and some fog that starts out along the coastline. that clears out. we'll get a brisk wind later on this evening. once again, that will mostly be for the east bay. 10 to 15 miles an hour. expect to do it all over again tomorrow. with a few clouds during the morning. and a lot of sun throughout the day. highs today reaching 88 degrees in san jose. while pacifica is at 77. and valley today, 68 degrees. low 90s for fairfield. walnut creek also there. and 91 degrees today in pleasanton. high pressure will be the reason for we will have this hot weather moving in. it continues to field across the region and causes those temperatures to rise that the sar sinks.

won't give us much on an onshore flow. looking at san francisco once again not much of a difference there. 60s for the next seven days. looking at 90s even up to 96 degrees by the middle of this next week. so this heat doesn't go anywhere. now mike is tracking a new crash in san jose. >> we have more issues popping up because more folk on the roadway now. commute starting to build. we'll focus over here first of all north 101. we had a disabled vehicle around 681. that's getting clear from the roadway. here at capital expressway we do have another crash just before you get to that off-ramp. may be blocking one lane. there's more slowing there. early start for that section to see the slower drive. and so we'll track that and see if it causes a shift for 85. so far we're standard over here. in the tri-valley, you know, what kris just talked about all the debris on the bay area road. we do have a crash which left some debris west 580. i told you about that north livermore. that is causing an issue. taking a while to clear that scene. another crash in the backup around vas co. smoother drive toward the dublin
