>> we start out this morning with some clouds and fog in san francisco and mostly clear skies. as you head away from the coast. but then as we go through the day, temperatures spread out. it heats up. it will be another hot one if you are not in san francisco. it's going to start out there at 57 degrees. 65 for the high. but look at the tri-valley, up to 93 degrees today. we'll see some more of those 90s not only for the weekend but into next week. we'll talk about that coming up in awe few minutes. heading over to mike now, already very active for the roads and the rail. >> a big look at the bay first and shoutout and b.a.r.t. still reports a major delay out of daly city in the east bay direction. major means anything more than 20 minutes. just south of that daly city station on 280 we had a crash blocking two lanes a few minutes ago chp gave us all clears toward hickey boulevard. there's the slowing. down the rest of the peninsula. that should quickly recover.

over here on the tri-valley we have much better news. the lanes have reopened as vasco both directions. now, this is just by the landfill but they may have to close things later on in the morning because of power lines down in the area. for now you can access 580 out of brentwood and discovery bay with no problems there. back to you. >> new this morning at 5:01, newly planted trees targeted once again in the south bay. just cut down. city leaders are trying to track down the mystery vandal in willow glen. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live there now. this is the second time, bob, in just a matter of weeks. >> unfortunately you are correct. someone has been cutting down these trees here in willow glen. people who live here want to know why someone is cutting down their newly planted trees. could be politically motivated. someone either wednesday night, early thursday morning, as you can see, they took an electric saw and cut through not one, not two, but 23 of these newly

planted trees along a quarter mile stretch here of meridian and dry creek. they cut in half what we believe to be chinese french trees. you can see they're cut in a way that these trees will never grow back. about a month ago someone cut down the 23 other newly planted trees located i cross the street. that's 46 trees wasted. damage estimated at $10,000 never mind the hundreds of volunteer hours to plant the trees. we spoke this morning with san jose city councilman. he represents this district. he expressed his frustration to us because he's the one who helped the city team up with our city forest environmental group to plant them last year to help beautify this part of willow glen. the kounsville man's office is offering a $5,000 reward. a mercury news report speculates this might be politically motivated given a few months ago

someone used white primer paint to deface colorful art boxes throughout the councilman's district. again, trying to figure out who struck again here on this stretch of meridian. it was a, as we mentioned, a few weeks ago they chopped down 23 trees and over 24 hours ago took care of the rest. the other 23. 46 brand new trees wasted, gone. reporting live in san jose, bob r redell, "today in the bay." >> sad to see. thank you very much. a scare in the air for passengers onboard a jetblue flight to sacramento last night. just minutes ago we spoke to rat rattled passengers after severe turbulence forced an emergency landing in rapid city, south dakota. >> the plane had taken off from boston. hit a patch of bad weather. 22 passengers and 2 crew members were transported to the hospital. all treated and released. passengers then continued on to sacramento aboard another plane where they talked about what happened. >> it was flying way up in the air.

my laptop flew way up in the air. stuff flying. the whole -- the storage thing up on top opened up completely just for a second and flew out. a bunch of people got hurt. >> it was like in a tower of terror. >> all of a sudden a shake and then everybody said whoa and then the plane just dropped. >> the passengers say there was also damage to the inside of the plane including cracks in the overhead bins. a developing story in southeast asia. five provinces in thailand have been hit by 11 bombings in less than a day. here's what we can tell you right now. several of the places hit are among the most popular tourist resorts in the country. at least four people have been killed. 34 injured. police believe the blasts were acts of local sabotage not linked to international militant group. it comes just days after the country voted to accept a military-backed constitution. gruf on the peninsula as friends and family members remember 20-year-old calvin reilly who was killed while he was playing pokemon go last

weekend in aquatic park. people are gathering in today in san mateo for his funeral. reilly played baseball and graduated from sara high school. he was shot and killed near aquatic park. his godmother says the tight knit family right now is absolutely devastated. >> his dad and him were best friends. i mean, i just can't believe -- he's been wanting me to come out and visit and this shouldn't be the way i have to come. >> such heartbreak. the search for his killer meantime continues. u.s. park police investigators are asking the public for clues that can help lead them to the gunman. at 5:05, taking you back to rio. two golds for two simones. simone biles left the world breathless with her floor routine. she takes the gold. simone manuel breaks boundary to win an individual team medal.

definitely an emotional night for team usa. >> historic one. nbc bay area anchor jessica aguirre live in rio with a look back at the americans' accomplishments. jessica, nothing is going to rain on their parade but there is some rain right now. good morning. >> yeah, day seven. halfway through the competition. 38 medals and counting and, again, rain in rio after a sunny day yesterday. now today a lot of emphasis will move to track and field. that's when it kicks off today. rain or shine, it will go forward. last night, you're right, sam and laura, all the emphasis was in the pool and in the olympic stadium where two members of the final five were competing. and now this morning right before i came out here i went in the commissary to get a couple of coffee. blurriy eyed as i was, who did i see but all five members of the final five and their coordinator martha karolyi, having breakfast, cool as a cucumber all of them. not making a big deal of the

fact that they made history last night. it was a magical and emotional night for team usa in rio. simone biles and aly raisman in tiers after finishing one, two, in the women's all around finals. stanford student simone manuel overcome after tie for gold in the 100 meter flee. the first female african-american swimmer ever to win an individual medal. inspired performances continued. cal's ryan murphy with gold in the men's 200 backstroke. michael phelps taking the 22nd gold of his career in the 200 im. while kayla harrison was a nightmare for opponents winning her second gold in judo confirming she's the best in u.s. history. looking to add more gold to their plaque legacies michael phelps and incoming stanford student katie ledecky will be back in the pool later today. now, listen to this. katie ledecky is rooming with

release his tax returns. >> reporter: hillary clinton's released eight years worth and says last year's is coming soon. her campaign is responding to a report that one of her top aides at the state department did double duty for the clinton foundation. >> the american people are tired of the pay to play politics in washington, d.c. >> reporter: in a statement the clinton campaign says aide cheryl mills volunteered for the foundation on her own time. and on her own dime, the campaign says that she went to new york to do some interviews, conduct some interviews for the clinton foundation. she paid for her trip. she did it on personal time. and that's why they argue it wasn't a conflict of interests with her state department job at the time. >> tracie potts live from washington. thank you very much. new legal battle may be brewing in san francisco for 100-year-old woman who two years ago won a bitter eviction fight. you may recall 100-year-old car in 2014, she won the right to

remain in her lower home where she's lived for decades. now she's facing eviction again. that's because her landlords say she failed to pay court ordered attorney fees amounting to more than $150,000 and the judge on wednesday ruled in their favor. today they will call on district attorney to take legal action against her landlords. even the wealthy are leaving the city of san francisco. >> scott mcgrew joins us now. san francisco bankers say house prices are too rich for this blood. >> he's headed to oregon, laura. it's the second time in two days we've seen a community leader say the house prices in the bay is too high. it makes sense to leave and maybe go find somewhere else to live. the "business times" say the head of the san francisco credit union is taking his family to oregon claiming high home prices drove them away. the family currently rents in san francisco. landon dowdy is iing to tell us

>> i love baseball. >> it's very asian. it's very young. >> male? >> very male, yes. but asian males make up a huge amount of the world's population. >> a lot of money. >> scott, thank you very much. we are seeing record high smog levels right now. apparently sending more people to the hospital in parts of southern california. the inland empire is feeling the situation worst. that's where health leaders say breathing-related visits this summer are more than 10% higher. in june and july the entire region experienced only five healthy air days due in large part to wildfires and to stagnant weather. as we talk about this issue, here in the bay area we're having problems as well. live look at san jose. not like southern california. but still the air quality is not going to be much better. air quality leaders have declared a second straight "spare the air" day. light winds are bringing in more smoke from the soberanes wildfire from big sur. this marks p 15th "spare the air" day we've seen this summer. look up, there's a show playing out in the skies above.

astronomers say the annual perseid meteor shower peaking right now through 5:30 this morning. >> it's supposed to be more visual this year because of higher levels of dirt and dust contained in the cosmic cloud. you can't get out to see it right now the shower is supposed to provide more sights tomorrow morning over the same time period. get another opportunity. >> there you go. you get to line up with all your wishes out there. >> i think -- i believe that scott budman was periscoping like 1:30 this morning. >> i'm going to replay budman's periscope but maybe tomorrow we will continue to get up at the hour that we do. >> no way. it is saturday. forget it. sleep in until 6:00. >> when i woke up this morning and started out, had clouds over the south bay. tough to see that. and hopefully we'll have clear skies heading into tomorrow morning. you'll get a better chance to view the meteor shower. not only that, warmer air moving in. moving into the next several days. as we look outside, oakland. you can't see anything there.

low clouds. also along the coastline. starting out there morning, you're feeling a temperature of 58 degrees. most of us in the 50s now. even some low 60s now for the south bay as well as the tri-valley. and our winds coming in from the north. light northerly winds will start to turn more westerly into this afternoon. picking up to about 10 to 15 miles an hour. a little bit of a broez but not enough to really of help clear out the ozone levels as those temperatures build into the 90s once again today. more of the same tomorrow. start out with a northerly wind and turns more northwesterly. the summer fest happening this weekend. and in san jose, it will be hot. so make sure you bring lots of water bottles and you also have some sunscreen. our temperatures will be anywhere from the upper 80s to low 90 frz today into the weekend. we're up to 89 degrees in los gatos. castro at 65 degrees. 85 in santa rosa while oakland is at 74 and low 90s for the tri-valley today.

so hot weather continues to build with that stagnant air. and the high ozone levels along where the smoke being blown into parts of the bay area. as our wind increases we won't see that until the evening hours. by then it will already be too hot. high pressure continues to move in, it keeps it hot and dry over the next several days. in san francisco, temperatures stay in the 60s over the next seven days. we're looking at some 90s and it won't budge from there as we go into early next week hitting 96 degrees on tuesday and wednesday. heading back over to mike, he has still some b.a.r.t. delays. >> that's right, kari. wheel encouraging folks to use mass transit, "spare the air" day, avoid b.a.r.t. at least from the peninsula over in towards the east bay directions. peninsula, all reporting major delays south or across toward the east bay. that's basically any of those trains leaving the peninsula and sf stations. equipment problems on the track. that's all we're being told. unspecified other than that. more than 20 minutes.

that will be system swwide. look at the traffic flow, light. even though we would like you to take mass transit on "spare the air" days you can't hit the roadways without much problem getting out of san francisco and the east bay. commute in out of the east bay is light. we'll see you the bay bridge toll plaza. nice flow of traffic. no bachups. no problems. may see the metering lights turn on in ten minutes. look at fremont, showing a nice flow of traffic as well. oakland, 880 as well here past the truck scale all of the way into the south bay without delay for silicon valley. >> mike, thank you very much. coming up, tragic string of events lands a toddler in the hospital. what caused the young boys to fall from a third-story window. explosion that flattened a

maryland apartment a developing story. new information on wednesday's late night explosion that flattened a maryland apartment compl complex. we don't know the exact cause of the blast but investigators are pretty sure it was triggered by a natural gas leak. authorities confirmed two deaths at least five people are still missing and dozens more were injured. three firefighters suffered injuries while fighting the fire until crews were pulled out because the fire was deemed too dangerous to continue. a freak accident on the peninsula this morning. an 18-month-old boy is in the hospital and treated as stanford after falling from a third-story window. he is in critical condition. it happened at an apartment

complex in foster city yesterday. police said the boy leaned up against an open window and fell through the screen. >> i feel so bad for the parents, but i mean, god bless that little boy. i just hope god has him in his arms and is going to pull him through this. >> at this time neither the parents nor property owner held responsible for what's being called a horrible accident. 5:26. family members are demanding answers after the latest twist in the deadly skydiving accident in lodi. 18-year-old man died on saturday along with his die skye diving instructor when their shared parachute failed to open. now the united states parachute ocean says the skydiving instructor was not certified to tandem jump. that's a violation of faa regulations. the faa still investigating. the owner of the skydiving business is not commenting. coming up, new clues in a disturbing story out of san francisco. the details we're leaning about

a very good friday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we are going to get straight to breaking news that is going i'm pocket a at impact a lot of commuters. >> we have an issue reported somewhere between san francisco and mill bay. it's along the peninsula line. trains are stopped between 24th street and millbrae station because of equipment problems on the track. that's a rough way to start. b.a.r.t. system is not running for those train ace long this side of the bay. and that will increase more traffic flow as folks find an option. caltrain is an option at the millbrae station. others will have to find alternate form. the bus systems not yet honoring the b.a.r.t. yet. meanwhile over this side. you're going to richmond over down towards fremont and the dublin line. no delays on this side of the

bay. but we'll continue to monitor as b.a.r.t. gives us the updates we will pass them along to you. it's a friday light commute. as we look toward the bay bridge even though the trains are reported out of san francisco heading over to the east bay. any time there's a problem reported for b.a.r.t. people hear that and tend to hit the roads. we may see more traffic flow at the pay bridge. you can see a little bit of backup starting to form here. also see low clouds and of course friday so we're opening for a lighter commute. kari, also hope for good weather. >> we will have good weather but it is also a "spare the air" alert day so we are encouraging people if you can just to maybe get out the door a few minutes early and take public transportation. as we will go into the day. we'll see the temperatures spreading out. it's 52 degrees in the north bay. 62 dleegrees in the south bay. 80s for the south bay. 65 in san francisco. 93 in the tri-valley. ville more i'll have more.

happening today, friends and family are coming together to say a fine nam good-bye to 20-year-old calvin reilly. >> "today in the bay's" chuck coppola is live. definitely an emotional day. big loss for this family. >> reporter: that's right. 20-year-old calvin reilly's funeral here at st. gregory's catholic church in san mateo will i think from more family and friends. last night many came to visitation praising reilly for his character as well as his athletic ability. he was a i believe ba standout at sara high school where he graduated last year and stand out at delta college where he had just completed his freshman year in stockton. he was shot to death last saturday night while playing pokemon go in san francisco. >> his dad and him were best friends. i mean, i just can't believe -- he's been wanting me to come out

and visit and this shouldn't be the way i have to come. >> reporter: the shooting happened last saturday night aquatic park in san francisco shortly before 10:00 p.m. that's not terribly late. in fact one u.s. park police investigator says aquatic park was bustling, but so far no suspect has been identified. police want anyone with any information to come forward. reporting live in san mateo, i'm chuck coppola, "today in the bay." new this morning, the mystery in san jose's willow glen neighborhood. someone is chopping down dozens of trees. city officials say they're stumped as to how to catch the culprit. 23 trees were cut down at meridian avenue and dry creek road yesterday. here's some video taken just weeks prior after another 23 trees across the treat were chopped down. the trees were planted as part of a $50,000 project of volunte volunteers. city leaders are offering

$50,000 to anyone with information. we'll bring you a live report coming up in our next half hour. also new this morning, this time on the peninsula. where a man was caught exposing himself within view of a public pool. san bruno police officers arrested the 47-year-old hayward resident yesterday afternoon after a parks department employees caught this man making lewd gestures. police are asking anyone information on that crime to give them a call. at 5:34 this morning we're learning new details about the 28-year-old man found dead this weekend in the stairwell at westfield san francisco center. everything fra galicia was a chef at sons and daughters near union square. police are trying to figure out exactly how he died but investigating his death as a homicide. maintenance workers say he was found in the stairwell with his shirt partially off with scratches on his back. we spoke to the victim's brother last night by phone. >> he just went with the flow. he never had any kind of quarrels or beef or any kind of

disgruntled situations with anyone. >> galicia is originally from southern california and came to san francisco a year ago to take a position at sons and daughters restaurant. his family is waiting for the autumn si report for the cause of death. police are looking through surveillance video hoping to find clues. san francisco police today are making an unusual public push to help solve the killing of high school student that happened a decade ago. on august 14th, 2006, someone shot and killed this 17-year-old aubrey abricasa at the intersection of groef and baker streets. 2:00 today his mother paulette brown is going to be at that location handing out fliers. both brown and the police say they know who the suspects are but arrests can't be made until witnesses come forward. brown says a street full of people ran from the shooters. recent attacks targeting law enforcement officers now has richmond's police chief asking for help. there have been no threats against richmond officers but

chief brown doesn't want to wait. he's asking for new equipment. brown says the department needs new helmet, rifles, new rescue vehicle. >> i'm super concerned about he officers. the threats around us have our attention. >> brown wrote a letter calling attention to the need for the new equipment. richmond's mayor says he, too, wants to make sure the apartment is equipped and prepared. it is time to head into the weekend. at least it's friday. we have a friday forecast and a weekend forecast for you. >> it will be hot, especially if you're away from the coast. that's where you want to go ahead and make plans for the weekend to go to the pool, maybe go to the beach somewhere where there's air conditioning because it will be warming up. 60 in livermore. 62 in san jose. morgan hill is at 52 degrees. we also have lower 50s for the north bay. high temperatures this afternoon reaching into the mid 70s in oakland. palo alto will be up to 82 degrees in san francisco, 65. 85 in santa rosa. and then you start to see more

of those 90s as you go from fairfield down to concord and livermore as well as morgan hill. so hot temperatures start to move in today. and it continues into the next several days. so we'll take a look ahead to the weekend coming up. let's get an update on those b.a.r.t. delays now from mike. >> we have more details from the b.a.r.t. system. folks over there report that there was an electrical issue on the track. sparks were seen and debris has to be cleared. replacing a component. at least they know exactly what's going on and it sounds like they should be able to make relatively quick work but that is right now causing trains to be stopped between 24th street in san francisco all of the way down to millbrae, the peninsula line right there is stopped on the track. of course it's causing a problem getting down to millbrae or out of the area and over toward the east bay. that's on the east bay side where the roadways are very light. it's friday, of course. meanwhile, throughout the east bay, richmond, fremont, pleasant on the, not reporting any delays. if they're depending on a train from the peninsula that will be an issue.

high schoolers and they have their own idea of style but some for little kids as women. the parents get to pick up all the supplies. they're color-coded and put together so that they don't have to shop around for things like glue sticks and pencils and just shop around for the fun stuff. about $75 worth of supplies in each of those bags. all of the items that schools often ask the families to provide. now, distribution starts at 8:00 this morning. but we do have have of last year's event. sacred heart community service will distribute some 3300 backpacks today. and this is the most students that they will serve in the 14 of year history of this event which sacred heart says speaks to the pressure that low-income families are under in the silicon valley. consider the minimum wage in this county, santa clara county, is $11 an hour, and for that, that means that $75 worth of supplies is nearly a full day's work. >> families shouldn't be making a decision with putting food on

the table and buying school supplies. >> back to school costs are up for all families. according to the annual backpack index this year familys will spend $659 per elementary school student. nearly a thousand for middle school students and nearly $1500 per high schooler. that's subpoena ppplies and extracurricular activities. the index is put together by hunting on the huntingto nr bank of ohio. sacred heart says it sends a power fu message to the children, that their education matters and they will go to school ready to learn and ready to become whatever it is they want to be when they grow up. the families will start lining up later this morning and they will get to come in and shop. i think i like this one. it has a little -- nice pattern. >> a little flare. >> very nice things that will --

moving because both bills have been talked about for some time. finally moving to the senate floor. they need approval from the senate and governor before becoming law. san francisco leaders later today are going to remove the fush push for improved tour bus safety. phil king inspired by last year's union square tour bus crash that injured 20 people is winding through the state capital. the build would create new oversight ensuring more stringent and frequent tour bus inspections. that measure sailed through the assembly this summer. it's being reviewed by the state senate. supervisors are expected to join king for a rally outside san francisco city hall. this year on game day, fans can take that express train to get there. vta kicking off a new special light rail service exclusively for the niners game instead of taking the local train which has 26 stops along the way.
