>> i'm sam brock. this morning we start out with a look at your weather. rob my yis if for kari hall today. >> another continuation of that trend. soars into the 90s once again. the story this morning if you look outside, golden gate bridge, drizzle and some fog for you outside right now. there's a view. you can see 56 degrees in san francisco. morning temperatures in the 50s as we move into the afternoon, as sam mentioned, mid 90s in the tri-valley. mike, you've been tracking a crash around san jose. >> that's right, rob. we had another crash in san francisco. we'll touch on that in a second. this one down here, san jose, 101. you saw the sensors around bay at the speed limit. nothing to worry about except for right as you're approaching the tully road off-ramp. early road crash was changed from injury crash to minor injuries. i think someone was says their arm was sore. there may still be activitactiv. just a note. that's the only issue though for the south bay as far as the speeds go.

you're at the limit. you have a much brigger issue over in the east bay. hayward, mike. a city that has seen a surge in violence, a husband and wife held up just hours ago while walking down the street. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live. bob, we understand after taking their krefl phones the suspect shot at the man one time? >> reporter: you are correct. and again, what happened here in hayward last night is the latest in a string of violent crimes within the city limits. over the past two weeks five people have been murdered in hayward. then you have last night's shooting. fortunately police tell us this morning that that victim is expected to survive his injury. this happened around 11:45 last night. a husband was walking with his wife down florida street at dolphin lane. this is a residential area. a man pulled a gun on the couple and demanded their cellphones. the husband and wife complied. the police tell us that for whatever reason the man still shot the husband one time.

again, his injury is nonlife threatening. the couple tells police that the robber was tall and african-american, that he drove off in a candy apple red suv with gold rims. as i mentioned, it's been a violent summer for the city of hayward. this map we put together shows the locations of the five homicides that have taken place over the past 14 days. you can see there's three that took place between 880 and 238. one by the airport and another near the hills. the most recent murder taking place this past sunday night on cottonwood avenue. a man was stabbed to death after he had a run-in two other men, making him the eighth person to be murdered in hayward this year. police tell us it is unprus dented to have this much violence in such a short period of time. reporting live here at hayward police, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> let's hope they catch that suspect. more breaking news. this time in southern california where there is a state of emergency. out of control wildfire burning about 60 miles east of los angeles. 82,000 people remain out of

their homes this morning. that is more than the population of redwood city. so far there's no numbers on the amount of structures destroyed but we have seen video of homes just completely up in flames. the blue cut fire started yesterday morning. quickly exploding as i mentioned earlier to 18,000 acres. burning in the cajon pass, that's west of interstate 5 between the san bernardino and santa gabriel mountains. 34,000 homes in the san bernardino area are in danger at this hour. the governor declared that state of emergency for that area. now, stay with "today in the bay" for the very latest on this breaking news. we'll update you throughout this newscast and on nbcbayarea.com. the other major file we were following a developing story out of northern california. the man accused of starting the massive clayton wildfire that destroyed almost 200 homes and businesses in lower lake over the weekend is set to appear in a lake county courtroom today. this is damin pashilk's first

court appearance for the arrest but the 40-year-old has a lengthy rap sheet. he's been convicted of dui, possession of methamphetamine andfirearms. it turns out the california department of corrections says pashilk served as an inmate firefighter in 2007. meantime, firefighters are making some progress on getting control of the clayton fire. more families are now being allowed back in their homes. but some are returning to just ashes. so far 175 homes and businesses to be exact are destroyed. 4,000 acres burned. and that fire is now 35% contained up from 20% yesterday. our pete suratos is going to bring us a live report. in the south bay, cellphone video shows moments after a fiery crash in san jose. it happened just before 9:00 last night on west end carlos and lincoln. a car crashed into the side of a tattoo shop severing a gas line which started a fire that spread

to the roof. there's also a music hall in that building. witnesses say ten bands were practicing inside at the time. they didn't hear the crash. one man we spoke with ran in to alert them. >> we came out front. the car was won fire. if somebody needed help. when we realized there was a gas line, let's get everybody out of there, call 911. get everybody out of the building safely, you know what i mean? >> we know what you mean and you did it. no one was hurt. 100 people were evacuated. now to rio where team usa returned to golden form. the americans making a strong run during last night's track and field events. it's lived up the hype in gymnastics. here are live pictures from rio. the olympic flame burning into the 12th day of competition. a man who recently tried to pull off a kidnapping in san lee andro may be linked to two more kidnapping attempts. we have a sketch of the man police are looking for. police say attempted to kidnap a woman on washington avenue on july 28th and may have made similar attempts on two other women in the days after that attack. all three attempts were in broad daylight. police are hoping someone who sees the sketch can help trigger new leads. also new this morning. san jose leaders are green lighting a plan to boost housing for the homeless. they approved a plan to use six acres of vacant land in willow glen. exact type of project still in limbo, but one plan includes more than 100 temporary modular

for the morning and then t-shirt weather will be fine again for the afternoon for most places. especially around the tri-valley. one thing we will watch with the hazy afternoon sunshine could be area of smoke as the upper level winds begin to shift for the outdoor plans, recess outside, south bay down into morgan hill and santa cruz air pollution may be on the increase over the next couple of days due to that smoke. the evergreen school district getting under way today. 80s for highs today. mid 80s around san jose. san francisco, in the 60s. not 34umuch change to your temperatures. north bay, 80s around santa rosa and napa. livermore this afternoon, highs in the mid 90s. seven-day outlook shows you we're going to see temperatures staying in the 60s around san francisco and across our inland valleys, some cooling as we head into the weekend there. temperatures dropping into the upper 80s by sunday and now with the check of your morning commute and crash in san francisco, here's mike. >> we had earlier crash. first of all, that one in san jose did clear.

it is 4:54. new state law requiring vaccinations is adding a new layer of stress as the school year starts. we're hearing reports of students being turned away from sacramento to san diego for not having proof of immunization. san jose unified head nurse is dealing with many families turning in last-minute immunization forms. the district's 32,000 students, only 30 family have sought medical waiver or turned in so-called personal belief

waivers. who cannot provide a medical reason not to will be turned away. the law is currently being challenged by parents who say it violates a child's right toen education. one of the figures in san francisco's history honored for years to come. the usns harvey milk was unveiled yesterday. >> state and military leaders attended yesterday's historic naming ceremony. it happened on treasure island. milk of course was so many familiar with him in the bay area was a gay rights leader and former san francisco supervisor, assassinated in 1978. the ship is part of a new fleet planned to honor civil rights leaders in the u.s. don't look now but the giants are suddenly looking up in that race for the pennant. >> what happened here? they were cruising for most of the season. some fans may be waking up this morning and asking what happened. the giants lost last night to the pittsburg pirates 4-3. a game winning home run there late in the game.
