"today in the bay" starts right now. we are happy you're starting off your workweek here. good morning on this monday. thank you for joining us. i'm sam brock. >> hope you had a great weekend. i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get to the workweek forecast with rob in for kari. >> an interesting forecast. we're watching the radar now seeing partly cloudy skies around the bay area. 50s and 60s out there. for the afternoon trvels pretty comfortable. 60 closer to san francisco. this is one thing to watch as we go through the morning. we're seeing showers moving away from the sierra east to west. north bay locations seeing a stray shower or two. we'll have a closer look at the forecast in a few minutes. right now a check on the south bay commute. >> oakland schools back in session today. also liver more. we'll look for shifts in the

patterns around the bay as a result. meanwhile in the south bay the only pattern issue is watching 17 northbound at 280 watching for any issues because of a disabled vehicle which sounds like everything is out of the roadway. chp is arriving. a live look at the 101 in the area and show you how light the traffic is. back to you. >> thank you. mike. thank you very much. developing story now two people have died after a shooting only blocks away from san jose state university spartan stadium. bliss are searching for the gunman. today in the bay bob redell joining us live at the scene with what we know so far. good morning. >> good morning, to you sam. i spoke with san jose police. they said it's possibly gang related this happening right behind me here near martha. it's about a half mile away from spartan stadium. police are doing their work at the crime scene. this shooting happened around 8:45 last night. and according to police and according to neighbors who we

spoke to, at least two summits pulled up in a white car and started firing shots. neighbors say at least a dozen possibly as many as 20 shots. they hit two brothers. one in their 20s another one in their 30s. one of the brothers died on the scene. the other one died at the hospital. now a source tells us that the people, the suspects used an ak 47 to commit to these crimes. police are saying it's possible it is gang related. those suspects still on the loose. they were seen taking off in a white car. police not classifying this as a drive by because the way they believe it happened they pulled up in the car and got out of the car, committed the crime, and got back in the car and sped off. it wasn't a situation where they were driving as they were doing -- committing the shooting there. again, they are looking for two summits, at least, two killed two brothers last night. and what police believe was a gang-related crime. reporting live in san jose bob

"today in the bay." new this morning san francisco police looking for a man who bit off a bartender's finger. take a look at the suspect. officers say the man attempted to enter a bar after closing time last month when the bartender tried to stop him. the suspect bit off the bartender's ring finger. the suspect also hit the bartender in the face multiple times as you see him trying to get the man down and to stop him from attacking the bartender. call san francisco police if you recognize this man. church left side week at st. dominic's. someone stole a piece of the true cross. they wrote the relic has no monetary value. they're praying the people involved will return it. new details on a wild fire in lake county that is almost fully contained. cal fire said the clayton fire, which destroyed 300 structures

is now 95% contained and close to being out. a serial arsonist is suspected of starting that fire on august 13th. the valley fired burned miles away last year from the same site killing three people and destroying almost 600 home naps fire was sparked by a faulty hot tub wiring. right now there are currently six large fires burning up-and-down the state of california. thousands of firefighters are battling the active fires working long hours with strained resources. the blue cut fire in sbernardin county is 85% contained. thousands of people were vangted from their homes are allowed back. many, though, are returning to find their homes levelled to the ground. the chimney fire is threatening the historic hurst castle and other communities nearby. firefighters are saying they have a plan already in effect to protect the castle if it comes to that. meantime at 5:04 firefighters are gearing up to

take on another battle. this time at the state capitol in sacramento they will be rallying for higher pay. the group plans to walk five blocks from their union offices to the capitol steps. last time they rallied like was in '70s. cal firefighters make way less than the other top fire agencies in the state. as you can say it was a fitting end to the olympics where rain extinguished the torch in rio de janeiro last night. there was plenty of the rain and wind and lightning. but that did not put a stop not closing ceremonies. >> it was punctuated with music from brazil. recognizing the country's indigenous people. the closing ceremony looked forward to the future toward tokyo 2020. japan's prime minister appeared dressed as mario. he received a standing ovation. last night's main focus was to celebrate the athletes, of

filed a lawsuit. it's part of a long running records lawsuit filed by the group judicial watch. the group is seeking all of clinton's e-mails between 2009 and 2013. the judge gave the group until october 14th to give clinton questions. she then has 30 days to answer them. it's starting to look more as if the hackers who attacked the democrats are attacking republicans. >> john mcgrew all fair in cyber. the first to report it that hackers targeted the donald trump campaign. washington has all but said russia is behind these attacks. mark zuckerberg on friday filed papers to sell more than $90 million worth of facebook stock so he can give the money to charity. part of his plan to sell or giveaway most of his wealth over the course of his life. facebook set up is special stock structure that will allow zuckerberg to remain in control

>> a little interesting outside. we have the radar fired up this morning looking scattered showers and speaking of radar. we have a new tool at c bay area. it took up parking spaces all by itself. a live picture there on the left. doesn't even fit on the left-hand side of the screen. we have a mobile doppler radar. doppler on wheels. it's interesting to have around want bay area. we have a number of different weather conditions we track. jeff has it on last night tracking scattered showers and we can also track wild fire smoke plumes as well. here is the issue around the bay area. some mountain top radar sites overshoot a lot of weather across the bay area. what storm ranger is able to go in places like the tri-valley or over to san francisco. you have the radar gaps. so as a mobile radar now we can hit the from san mateo and take you to the tri-valley and give you a high definition view and head back to san francisco tracking the severe weather as it moves around the bay area. or, in some cases, as we talked about, look at a chance of those

wild fire plumes sending smoke into the bay area. so it's mobile and gives us higher resolution detail to improve storm accuracy. all the reasons why we're excited to have storm ranger here at nbc bay area. this morning we have 50s and 60s outside. around the north bay an offshore of san francisco very interesting on the radar this morning. not a lot happening now. at least in the south bay. offshore we have thunder showers here moving off to the west from east to west away from the sierra as an upper level low moves around the central coast. some of this may try to drop into the east bay as we head through the second half of the morning commute. you can see the showers picking up and shutting down by the time we approach the afternoon and evening commute around the bay area. high today upper 70s. low 80s around the south bay. we're talking mid 60s for san francisco. 70s into the north bay. a slight chance of isolated showers around santa rosa and the tri-valley. highs in the low 80s and san francisco not much change next couple of days.

you see the suspect walking around eating. we tonight know before and after that incident. you see him getting in a tussle with his friend. the specific video doesn't show that incident. but according to san francisco police they say it happened on the 1900 block of lumbar street on july 17th around 2:15 a.m. that bartender turning away the suspect who had been drinking with friends inside the bar earlier that evening. the bar was getting ready toy close. it lead to a fight between the two of them. and the suspect biting one of the victim's fingers which was eventually amputated. 6'0" hispanic hair with black hair and brown eyes. if you have any information to help with the case, contact sfpd. >> thank you very much. a developing story out of the south bay where police have just confirmed the two brothers were killed in a shooting near the san jose state campus. police say it happened on south eighth street just blocks from

spartan stadium. just before 9:00 last night. the first victim was pronounced dead at the scene. the other person died at the hospital. police don't have a motive and they don't know what might have lead up to the shooting. the suspects are still on the loose this morning. tod"today in the bay" bob redels tracking the latest. he'll bring a live update in the next half hour. anger boils over in san francisco as protesters hit the streets to speak out against the recent attack outside of a gay bar. earlier this month tom ymy castalani. police are not ruled the attack a hate crime. they see it as part of an ongoing problem. activists rallied to increase awareness and encourage members of the gay community to look out for each other. >> there's continuing violence and harassment and bullying of lgbt people in san francisco. i want to know why we have to be victims or targets. you know, are we easy prey?

is there not a better solution we could have come to? if they gotten to know me, they would see i'm a pretty okay guy. >> investigators have yet to make any arrests in the attack. a man diving for abalone died yesterday. life guards pulled that man from the water after a dive. he was pronounced dead on the beach. the man's identity hasn't been released. several bay area residents died last year while diving for abalone which is a group of small to large sea snails. at 5:34 now. an uphill battle for firefighters. crews continue to fight vicious flames across california. currently there are six large fires and thousands of firefighters on the front lines. today many will be facing a different battle. let's turn to "today in the bay" kris sanchez. they're rallying for higher pay at the state capitol. >> right. this is a same time that corral firefighters are battling the

front lines of the wild fires. some of their firefighters will march the state capitol grounds today asking for better wages and better working conditions. here is why. according to this comparison provided by union leadership for local 2881 a cal fire captain earns up to $4600 a month with no retirement or benefits. their workweek is 72 hours a week. a captain in one of theest earns up to $8700 gross. no benefits. no retirement there. their workweek is 56 hours. one of the union leaders for cal fire local 2881 writes, quote, "we will not roll over at the expense of the men and women who spend so much time away from their families fighti ining the fires on the front lines. our brothers and sisters deserve better." they're focussed on negotiations. they say it's not a band aid but a stopping of the bleeding.

the negotiations are underas they have peers on the front lines of six major active wild fires across the state. the two of them closest to us are the sbrab sbran knows fire. it's 60% contained. they're worki ing that actively. to to the north in lake county. that fire is 95% contained. the current cal fire deal is expectedin expected expire next summer. there isn't a lot of time to wait until fire season is over before the negotiations can begin. it's an ongoing process. clearly at a difficult time. we have so many fires burning now. >> yeah. we've been watching these firefighters poring their energy and resources into battling so many fires. thank you very much. as we talk about the state of wild fires in california, a live look at downtown san jose this morning. there's been a lot of smoke in the skies over the south

recently. of course, due to fires like the s fires around us. a new study from harvard and yale university finds in the coming decades people living in three different bay area counties are going to be at the greatest risk of exposure to dangerous levels of pollution specifically from wild fires. counties are san francisco, alameda, and contra costa. smoke contains fine particles that can stay in the air for hundreds of miles. time to check the microclimate forecast. showers out there? >> yeah. and smoke a big part of the forecast, as yo can see across the south bay. seeing qui ining quite a bit th. notice the transition to tomorrow morning. it looks like a wind shift.

we hope we'll begin to push more of the denser smoke to the south and east. this is the next 24 hours of the winds. we hope more of that smoke will head toward the california coast. that is one of the changes we'll see in the next 24 hours. the other check it out west of san francisco lightning strikes as scat earth showers are rotating from the east. between now and midday today. especially in the east bay hill tops. a chance of scattered showers. decreasing chances as we head through the afternoon. some mild temperatures to look forward to. the hazy sunshine today. temperatures in the 70s and low 80s. mid 60s closer to san francisco. highs in the mid 70s and fairly comfortable firefighters wi ste >> a look over here south bay all the way to the san mateo bridge north of there we have our two incidents i'm concerned. the bay bridge back up as well as this one. let's take the bay bridge and show you the back up.

a developing story right now and a complex of storms brought record-breaking rainfall and flash floods to south texas. heavy rain pounded the austin rain this weekend. several people had to be rescued as the floods swept across the area. high waters, also, took over streets and bridges impeding traffic. so far there are no reports of any injuries. tracking zika. it looks like the virus could stick around for some time in gulf coast states where it's

most vulnerable. the zika virus could hang around the u.s. for a year or two. states like texas and louisiana could see cases. florida already hard hit. zika has been found in two neighborhoods of miami-dade county. wynwood and miami beach. last week nontravel related infections were found in miami beach. there's a travel warning heading for pregnant women heading to those neighbors. people are being told not to eat raw crabs caught in half-moon bay. this warning is from coming from state public health officials after dangerous levels of acid were discovered there. the warning applies to shellfish. raw crabs found in waters south of pigeon point in san mateo county and north of cypress point in monterey county. toxics can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and dizziness. an investigative unit ebs collusive. many of our states injured

a lot of times the radar can overscan what is happening there. put the radar on wheels and we can fill in the gaps from the peninsula to the inner east bay, tri-valley, or back to san francisco. we can track the weather as it happens in real time. now this weather radar also can track fine details. it has high resolution capability. almost seven times faster in terms of gathering in those scans as it moves around the bay area. and can detect wild fire smoke. our sister station in southern california is using storm ranger to look at the fire and the smoke across southern california. very excited to bring that technology to you here at nbc bay area. temperatures out now and 60s and dusting off rate dollar. there's a light chance of a few scattered showers from east to west. it's rare we're talking about showers. the movement, too. a little unusual. low pressure to the south. counter-clockwise flow bringing showers to monterrey this morning. a few more on the short term

resources needed to help people not protect the president. now to an investigative unit exclusive. during your morning commute, chances are you spot a motorcycle zooming past traffic traveling in between lanes. >> the bikers soon will have to follow new safety guidelines as part of a new law signed by governor brown. will it be enough to protect you on the roadway? z>> if you're trying to determine how safe it is, you probably want to know how often lane splitting accidents occur. we discovered california doesn't track that. for years the state has allowed lane splitting without knowing how often people got injured or even died. california did start tracking that information for a period to study the issue but then stopped. after our investigation, assemblyman bill quirk of hayward hopes to change that. he imposed a bill that would institute speed guidelines for
