does it feel warm right now? >> no, especially in san francisco, the low clouds, drizzle the last few morning. jacket weather again. all around the bay area. 50s for most places. then we'll see the numbers turning over to the 80s across the south bay and oath bay. tri-valley we're talking mid to upper 80s. 82 in the forecast today closer to san jose. low 60s in san francisco. mike, those low clouds can cause issues for your drive on highway one or highway 17 this morning. >> that's right. note that early morning drive although it might not be crowded may be issues. watch along the coast. over here showing the smooth flow of traffic. take you over to the east bay for the report i have from chp some debris reported westbound 580 traveling up over past the zoo area. reported around golf link, farther back toward 150. again, debris in lanes. over here the oakland coliseum, we talked about that, game at 12:35. bay bridge toll pla, no problems. back to you.

breaking news that we have been following since we first came on air this morning. a surreal and jarring scene unraveling out of italy. dozens of people are dead and historic buildings are now in shambles. after a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck the area. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez monitoring the latest developments for us this morning. and, kris, we're hearing stories of homes just collapsing on people actually while they were sleeping. >> all this all happened about 3:00 in the morning so you know what you're doing, what the streets look like at 3:00 in the morning. everybody tucked away in bed. but we do know 38 people were killed in this earthquake. it was a 6.2 magnitude quake that nearly wiped three central italian towns right off the map. here's a look by afternoon light. this is about ten hours after the earthquake as rescue workers are still digging into the ground as it's shaking with aftershocks. you can see how some of the towns in amatrice, one of the

tree towns crumbled away. some of the buildings sheered off the side. the mayor there is quoted as saying the town isn't here anymore. there is an old saying that earthquakes don't kill people, buildings kill people and certainly you can understand why that saying is still alive today. the death toll right now is at 38. it is expected to rise as rescue workers reach some of the more rural communities. firefighters counted at least seven people buried in the rue i understand in amitrice alone and the aftershocks continue. amatrice is one of three towns 80 myself northeast of rome that were nearly wiped off the map. residents and priests alongside rescuers were digging for survivors. pope francis replaced his traditional wednesday teachings with a prayer for the victims. he encouraged the pilgrims to

keep them in their thoughts. now, this is a developing story. again, the earthquake struck about ten hours ago. so we do expect that the death toll is going to rise as those rescuers reach some of the more rural communities outside the hardest hit area. in our control center, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you. certainly prayers across the world for the folks in italy. to breaking news here at home where a man is shot in daly city overnight and police right now as you see are still casing the area and searching for the gunman. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is live at the scene with what we know so far. pete, good morning. >> good morning, sam. we're still here on ven dome avenue at the dead end street. i want to show you guy, still an active scene up this hill. this is a dead end street. you can the police tape up as they conduct their investigation. now, according to daly city police, they tell me around 12:30 a.m. a man had been shot in this residential area part of town.

now, when they arrived they found a 20-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the stomach. he was rushed to sf general for surgery and still waiting to get an update on that victim's condition. we still don't know if this was targeted of or a random act of violence. police at this time still haven't made any arrests. if you have any information contact daly city pd with that information. live in daly city, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, pete. it's 5:04. san jose police officer behind bars this morning accused of providing information to street gangs. officer derek antonio was charged with five felly counts of unauthorized computer access and one of accessory after the fact. it follows a five month long investigation into a vietnamese criminal street gang that resulted in multiple arrests and search warrants. a nine-year veteran of the force has been on administrative leave while the diplomat cepartment c an internal investigation.

we will follow the news conference later today. san francisco shoe shine worker is in critical condition after a cab jumps the curb and smashes into his stand. another shoe shiner was also hurt. he's in fair condition this morning. that crash happened yesterday where market, samson and sutter streets meet. >> what i did see was the old man flying up in the air, like something out of a movie. he was down on the ground and he had a bunch of debris on top of him. and i was in shock, just in shock. >> quite frightening. there were no passengers in the cab and it's not clear why the cabbie jumped the curve. the driver seemed pale and was lying down on the street. he was also taken to the hospital. no word this morning on his condition. laura, it is an agonizing heart wrenching story out out north bay where two sisters 4-year-old haley and 7-year-old are caitlyn mar kug drowned as their mom's truck plunges into the rushing river. those two girls were seated in the back of the truck with their

mother sara behind the wheel. they were just headed off to school when police say somehow the truck spun out of control and landed in the river. now, the mom did survive the crash by kicking out a window. we talked to a witness who saw this entire horrifying scene unravel. he says he jumped into the river to try and save the two girls. >> apparently the two girls were strapped in car seats and couldn't get out. it was like 20 feet deep and there was no way i could get donna deep. there was nothing else i would do. >> that family is from the small town of jenner. it's a small community coping with the loss of the only children living in the tight knit town. rest departmenidents say they'r come together and try to console each other and together get over this absolutely horrible los. right now a heroing rescue for a group of german tourists in yosemite. they scaled the side of a roadway through thick brush in an effort to get woman out of her vehicle. chp says a group of ten tourists

left san francisco monday for yosemite. seven of them rented motorcycles to drive through the national park while three of them rented an suv. the women in the suv never arrived at their destination so the chp spent the night and the morning searching for them. they were found yesterday afternoon and appeared to have been in an accident. >> this isn't something that we really deal with a whole lot, really, really technical extrication like this. so it's a challenge for the crews. >> two of those women were airlifted to local hospitals. we don't have any word on the condition of the third woman. fire crews rush in to battle flames in the chimney fire yesterday but were not able to save a number of hopes and structures. the fire burning in the san luis obispo area destroyed 45 homes. the biggest problem is people refusing to leave. they don't want to evacuate their homes. at least one family has bulldozed their own fire break. they don't plan on leaving until the threat is literally right at their doorstep. >> it's important to me to stay

here because this is our home, this is where we've lived. and i want to protect our place. >> the fire started nearly two weeks ago. scorching nearly 40,000 acres. it is only 35% contained. so many people have been devastated. so many communities rocked by wildfires. this has been a very warm summer so far. what are you tracking for today's forecast? >> we've been receiving the winds, too, at times out of the south pushing a lot of the smoke closer to the bay area. we'll zoom you in over san francisco into san jose. the thicker smoke is to the south. higher up, hazy skies. the winds will continue to push we think some of the surface smoke away from the south bay as we head into the afternoon. so air quality improving somewhat today and our temperatures running fairly cool at the coast but the valleys again and some of the hilltops near the chimney fire in the central coast still seeing 90s in the forecast. bay area not as warm though. 80 in san jose. mid 60s for san francisco. into the north bay today we will see highs in the mid to upper

70s. livermore and pleasanton today, warmer spots with those highs a bill warmer today with upper 80s in the forecast. for a check of your morning commute and issues on the peninsula drive, here's mike. >> we had a little slowing showing up as the crash reported over there. just north of hillsboro, southbound 280. that crash looks like everything is cleared up. no major injuries and no major slowing shows up after the first couple minutes smooth drive past sfo off of 101. we will look at foster city. outside of the san mateo bridge. and traffic flows smoothly although it looks likes once that building gets completed we'll have less of a view. >> thanks a lot, mike. coming up on the campaign trail, back here in the bay area. the fund-raisers hillary clinton will be stopping by today. >> plus, it appears hackers have once again struck in the united states. probably russian hackers. we'll take a look coming up in business and tech. and two years later, hard to believe. and the damage remains. a look back at how napa, how far

buildings. looking for survivors after a 6.2 earthquake. 38 people so far have died. that's number right now. we are of course continuing to follow that story. we'll give you updates throughout the morning. in the meantime, after -- they're in recovery mode in europe. in the bay area we're remembering the crippling napa earthquake. today marks two years since the 6.0 quake struck more than 600 structures were damaged in the process. now, combined rebuilding costs, ended up exceeding a billion dollars. for members of napa's first presbyterian church the recovery process has been a very long one. that church was built almost 150 years ago. the earthquake caused extensive damage. >> when you go through a tough time like this, of ur church really pulled together. i think our town is stronger for having gone through the earthquake. >> until last month church members were meeting regularly at a gymnasium next door. it took that long to reopen it. now the church, like much of napa, is back up and running. >> all right. presidential race coming

through the bay area today. hillary clinton in town. usual game plab, a quick visit for some big money. democratic candidate attended an event yesterday in piedmont. this afternoon mrs. clinton will be at 100 chon in redwood city. tickets ranging from $1,000 to $27,000. then tonight, the headline event, she'll be in los altos hills with tim cook. all of her visits are private and closed to the meet idea. donald trump bringing his campaign to florida and mississippi today. last night the gop nominee was at a rally in austin, texas. there the gop nominee received a warm welcome from thousands of supporters in what is considered to be the bluest part of the state. trump focused much of his speech on immigration. laura, as the makings of a repeat attack it would appear the same group that hacked into the democratic party's database may have hakd "the new york times." >> scott mccrew, some debate as to how far some hackers were able to get. >> "the new york times" says not

very far but cnn says hackers were able to target several "new york times" reporters. either way it's another worrisome development as we watch hackers suspected to be russian intelligence invade american lives. a columnist in the "washington post" wonders out loud if russian hacker are taking their queue from donald trump. it's a wild accusation but then again, trump has whaled against "the washington post" and new york times. at one point he said he wanted the post shut down. as for the times trump has used these words to describe the newspaper. failing, dead, worthless, bleeding red ink, and a total loser. tesla announced a new battery tuesday that would turn the model s into the fastest production car in the world, faster than any if ferrari currently in production. investors jumped on stock after elon musk said he had the announcement and then jumped back out after finding it was a battery. in general experts would advise against buying stock based on a

single tweet. landon dowdy is live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, landon. >> hi, scott. wall street could start off in green. futures are flat. markets rise on tuesday. close aufd the highs following upbeat data on new home sales. new hosing data today, sales of existing or previously owned homes. the dow rising. the nasdaq up 15 to 5260. scott? >> thank you. you may recall a couple weeks ago the news was full of announcement a chinese company had created a bus that straddles traffic. reporters did digging and suspect it was too good to be true. first of all the bus is generally too tall to get under any current city bridges in beijing. they say the whole thing was probably a scam. china has really been struggling with peer to peer investing, when somebody says i got the great idea, i can give you incredible returns. let's not use the stock market. let's not use banks.

>> we need to be patient for another month or so, in october, when the landslide improvement on treasure island are complete sod people have a place to go once they get on to the island. >> crews are also building a parking lot on for cyclists who want to park there and then pedal across the span. san francisco has some plaques commemorating a lot of its history but historians note none mark perhaps the most pivotal day ever, the great quake of 1906. according to the chronicle, that's about to change. city historians want to mount a brass plaque at market and geary streets where people are going to gather each year to mark the quake. the san francisco history association is trying to wrestle up close to $20,000 for that plaque. and hope to unveil it on the quake's anniversary next april. >> every year that's where are we've gone. >> that would be the perfect spot. but $20,000? for that? >> $20,000.

see today in livermore. highs approaching the upper 80s. air quality improving somewhat here for the north bay and the inner portions of the east bay. the upper level winds are pushing. still staying around san jose in the south bay heading into the afternoon. so our temperatures today for the south bay close to 80 in san jose. there you will find the 70s for the peninsula, around palo alto. san francisco, looking at your highs again in the 60s today. north bay temperatures about 78 in napa and the tri-valley, the warmest spot to be around, for livermore and concord. you will see your highs climbing into the mid and upper 80s today. san francisco, not much change. in fact, trending cooler with more drizzle as we head into the start of the weekend. and look at that sea breeze. dropping inland temperatures in the seven-day forecast as you see the numbers in the low 80s to start the weekend. so there you go. cool start to the school year for many around the bay area so nar. mike? >> as university students, rob, many of them commute more university students drive than elementary school students. you know that?

the push to end daylight saving ... fell short. =cng a spring forward, fall back, the push to end daylight saving ended up falling short. california lawmakers arer trying to put it on the november ballot so voters could divide. some lawmakers were worried ending it would put california four hours behind the east coast and that would cause problems for the business community. in the end the bill did not get the votes it needed to move

forward. california daylight saving since 1949. by the way, just a friendly reminder to set your clocks back on november 6th. put that on the calendar. higher tax on sugary drinks means fewer people will drink them. a new study shows fewer people with low-income neighborhoods are consuming soda and other sugary drinks. this in a direct aftermath of berkeley passing a soda tax two years ago in. in 2014 they approved a one cent per ounce tax of sugary drinks. it was the first of its kind in the u.s. to approve such a tax in an effort to reduce oh beats city and diabetes. other measures are on the ballot this november in san francisco and oakland shlt. research shows americans are paying more for prescription drugs in comparison to other advanced countries. experts say medications make up a fifth of all health care costs because the u.s. allows manufacturers to set their own prices and have exclusive rights that delay production of cheaper generic drugs. doctors also play a vital role

powerful earthquake, a 6.2 struck overnight. cities are buried and dozens are dead. >> reporter: "today in the bay's" kris sanchez has been tracking the latest developments. as responders start sifting through the buildings and rubble, the death toll is expected to rise. >> it's popular for folks trying to escape the heat of rome this time of year so a lot of tourists and a greatest population than usual in that part of the area where the epicenter happened. now, the earthquake happened at 3:00, 3:30 or so in the morning as people were sleeping in bed and you can see that the buildings just collapsed on top of them. live look right now by afternoon light as rescuers are still scrambling to try to find any survivor that might still be there 10 1/2 hours after the quake struck. rescue workers are again still working as the earth is still shaking with aftershocks. you can see how some of the homes in one of the those trouns, amatrice, just crumbled

learn more details about a gang sweep in the south bay that landed an officer behind bars. "today in the bay's" rob bedell is live at the police department with what we know about the officer facing numerous charges. good morning, bob. >> good morning, laura. officer derek antonio, nine-year veteran of the san jose police department was one of 29 people in connection with operation gang of thrones. five-month investigation into a local vietnamese street gang conducted by fbi and dea. officer antonio faces five felony counts of unauthorized computer access and one felony count of accessory after the fact for providing sensitive police intelligence to gang members. they placed officer antonio on administrative leave two weeks ago while the department conducted an internal investigation. he was arrested yesterday along with the other people. operation gang of thrones also resulted in 33 search warrants of homes, businesses, and

vietnamese cafe where's they based some of their operations. police have accused this gang of numerous crimes including assault, drugs, and illegal gambling. chief eddie garcia will join agents at 3:00 this afternoon at a news conference to further discuss results of this investigation that netted one of his own. reporting live here outside an jose police headquarter, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> bob, thank you. we have new details now on a cab ride gone wrong. a man accused of gouging a has been driver's eye is now behind bars. san francisco police say that henry martinez got infuriated on the route when the taxi driver was taking the -- the route he was taking early sunday so he allegedly punched the driver in the face. the cab driver stopped the car and tried dragging martinez out of the car. he seemed defending himself in that video. during the alter carries martinez gounched the driver's eye with his thumb. the driver had to have his eye treated at a local hospital.

a scary b.a.r.t. drive for commuters in the east bay. the man onboard started swinging a golf club at train car windows while still onboard. you'ring looking at the damage afterwards right here. this happened at a dublin pleasanton b.a.r.t. train station yesterday causing why spread delays in the system. the suspect then got out at west oakland and started smashing more windows at that station. the man was finally arrested there. oakland police are hoping someone recognizes the people or the car seen in these surveillance photos. police believe one of these people is the suspect in the shooting death of a musician. bass player emilio november rez was shot and killed outside the gol golden gold bar in april. early 2000 mercedes benz s series, 430 or 500. $35,000 reward for information that could help capture the suspect. a suspect connected to a murder in san francisco captured in the arizona with a help of social media. 19-year-old samantha rundstro

many,. san francisco district attorney's office notified police after she posted on facebook her vehicle had broken down in flag stiff, arizona. officers were able to track her down and arrest her. she is one of four suspects in the murder of steven williams. the group of vigilantes targeted him for exposing himself to children in the park. we could learn by the end of the week of a man accuse of murdering sierra lahar. lamar was last seen four years ago. her body has never been found. attorney for the suspect want that trial moved out of santa clara county. they cite an oversaturation of media exposure. both sides presented days of testimony surrounding the change of any motion. the judge's written decision is expected sometime later this week. and of course we will continue to follow because the public does care about that

the south bay judge who recently sentenced form we stanford swimmer brock turner. the the it is a sentence they considered too lenient. today's protest is being organized at the california commission on judicial performance building in san francisco. now to the police shortage in san jose where city leaders have come up with an emergency proposal to put more officers into patrol cars. that plan would give the police chief, quote, emergency powers that would allow the department to find a way around state law to make staffing changes. specifically what this would do would be to put -- allow the mayor to shift supervisors and detectives in patrol unit on the streets. >> this is critical so we can get more officers out there out on the street in the neighborhoods in the short the

>> now, the operating company calls the notice incomplete and premature. the district says it's public schools are dealing with a flood of new students that have abandoned the charter schools. the charter school closure is being called a last resort. classes begin at the university of texas at austin and students are going to be permitted to carry guns in all classrooms. new state law requires public universities to allow for concealed handguns in classrooms and buildings. but three professor at ut austin sued for the option to keep their classrooms gun free. their lawsuit referred to campus carry legislation as, quote, dangerously experimental. on monday a federal judge denied that request. 50 years ago a gunman shot and killed 14 people on that campus. school districts across the state this morning are preparing for the release of california's annual standardized testing results. the department of education tests are now known as the california assessment of student performance and progress. kids just know them as those tests. three years ago they replaced a

in florida... cases have now parts of then three diffent wednesday morning, the zika virus keeps spreading in florida. cases now have been found in three different parts of the state. the latest case was reported near tampa on the opposite side of the state from miami where the original outbreak started. in all, 42 people have contracted the zika virus in florida without traveling outside of the united states.

all right. preparation for that, preparation for america high school seniors. are they ready or college? turns out a large chunk are not. the government that puts together the a.c.t. college entrance exam says two thirds of the high school seniors who took that test, only 38% of them are actually college prepared or reach the benchmark to indicate they were in at least three out of four pocore subjects. last year it was 40%. to an investigative unit exclusive. workers hurt on the job say the deck is stacked against them when they try to get medical care. our investigative unit is taking a look at the workers comp system that patients say unfairly denies treatment. tonight we will show how what happens when people try to appeales that theemt denials. state data reviewed shows in the vast majority of cases reviewers believe they don't need the medical treatments the doctors request. supporters of the system sat it proves the process is working.
