"early today" starts now. good morning everyone i'm alex witt. a surprise tornado outbreak hit indiana and parts of western ohio. there are reports of more than 30 tornados. an official number has yet to be determined. no reports of death or serious injuries. >> it is truly remarkable that there are such a few number of injuries or worse in the wake of this storm given the fact that it literally struck howard county virtually at shift change in the afternoon in a great manufacturing town and about the time kids were getting out of school, just about the worst possible time. >> dozens of homes and businesses were destroyed. the national weather service has given a preliminary ef-3 rating. it is a city just getting over a

tornado that hit just two years ago there. one starbucks was blown to the ground there. people were trapped but luckily everyone was able to make it out uninjured. bill is joining us now with this. any areas in danger of twisters today? >> yesterday we didn't think so and we had some. the threat is minimal. if you're in any of these areas it could come together if things get worse that n we think. once we fire up and get the heat going we will get additional storms. 7 million people at risk and a few friends in oklahoma and air i can't say of kansas. >> thank you so much for that. happening now rescuers are racing against time to save victims buried under rubble. the 6.2 magnitude quake killed

the time is simply running out. there are dozens of rescue workers here. the town has been cleared. one firefighter that we spoke to in the morning is saying it is getting harder and harder to dig through the rubble. the ground is not steady. there are aftershocks, more than 460 aftershocks since that initial quake hit on wednesday. those, the fear is, could send more buildings collapsing here. it is a slightly better situation for rescue workers in that they have been fieblnally e to get heavy equipment. in the initial hours of the aftermath people were using shovels. some folks were using their bare hands. it was a desperate scene. right now the focus is getting to people hoping they are still
