slow because of a car that rubbed the shoulder and left debris just south of our camera show. oak port, one of your roadways on the side of the freeway. might offer relief right now. slow southbound. >> thank you very much, mike. new this morning, authorities in oakland investigating a late night shooting near lake merritt at 10:30 last night. police say the victim suffered gunshot wounds in the stomach and that he is now listed in stable condition. police also say up to five people may have been involved in that shooting. so far no arrests have been made. right now the latest developments out of central italy and amatrice where we are getting a glimpse of the scale of destruction follow that deadly earthquake yesterday. this is new video. as you can see it's aerial video that comes from a drone and you can see entire towns. you've heard about how they were reduced to rubble. this year a visual proof of of that.

rescue crews are using their bare hands to dig through the debris of hopes of finding anyone who could still be trapped underneath it. kris sanchez has been monitoring this story since early yesterday and, kris, the death toll there continuing to climb. >> it was revised slightly this morning down just because of view victims were counted more than once. still 241, nearly ten times what it was this times yesterday. yet there are moments that are giving people hope. this 10-year-old girl julia was pulled from the rubble. you can hear the applause. you can see the relief on the rescuers' faces before they go right back to work. here's what that little girl's town looks like from above. survivors sleeping outside, fearing injury from aftershocks as those buildings continue to crumble. the u.s. geological survey predicts those aftershocks will continue for about a week. much of the rescue work is early quiet as searchers use dogs and

audio equipment and as you said, sam, their bare hands to find the survivors under the rubble now a day and a half after the earthquake. the moment of the earthquake, the moment it struck was caught on camera. traffic cameras, before that quake wiped nearly three towns right off the map. >> incredible because it's like a bomb fell down on it. it's nothing there anymore. >> reporter: now here's what amatrice looked like before, the little town picturesque. here's what it looked like after that magnitude 6.2 quake. the death toll again was revised down from 247 to 241. that is because it is a fluid situation and in one of the towns some of the victims were count i'd moed more than once. it is possible that number will go up once again. sam and laura. >> thank you very much, kris. 6:04. friends and family are remembering the 18-year-old woman who died after being involved in a car crash in san

jose. she was seven months pregnant. luckily her pay by lived and his condition is improving. ♪ dozens of loved ones climbed to the rooftop of the parking a garage across the street from valley medical center to help remember dulce hernandez. she died in that horrible crash last week near tully road. friends and family prayed for her newborn that survived. >> the actually are allowed to take the baby and carry the son and feed him with a bottle. so that, we just heard that earlier today, so that for us is -- was very emotional. >> some progress for 7-month-old baby. the car crash happened last wednesday when her brother was driving her to herher fiance's k in san jose. police say the driver of the bmw

appeared to be intoxicated. that person was charged by dulce's brother had no drugs or alcohol in his system. in other news, b.a.r.t. trains had to bypass san francisco's civic center stop for much of the night last night. it was closed down after a person was suffering from stab wounds. it happened about 10:00 last night. it's unclear when or where that victim was stabbed. the person is in critical but stable condition and no arrests have been made. the b.a.r.t. station is back up and running this morning. it was a dramatic rescue in pittsburg where a police officer saves a blind man from his burning home last night. you can see all that heavy smoke just billowing out of the top of the house. that fire started just before 7:30 near west 11th and york streets. not very far from the birg post office. by the time crews were able to arrive a police officer was already pulling the blind man out of the home to safety. now, the homeowner is being treated for smoem inhalation and officer that rescued him is also

in the hospital. >> we also had one police officer who injured his arm during the course of the rescue. he was also transported with a serious arm injury from falling glass. >> brave intervention there. it took about 20 minutes to get that fire fully under control. there's still no word on what started it. 6:07. the man accuse of killing hayward police sergeant scott lunger is expected to enter a plea today. mark anthony estrada will appear in a hayward courtroom this afternoon. investigators say estrada shot the sergeant last summer during a traffic stop. lunger was a 15-year veteran of the hayward police department who lived in brentwood. new details in the operation known simply as gang of thrones. that was the take down of a san jose vietnamese gang. this morning we're learning what officers found during a massive sweep that also ended with a police officer's arrest. 23 suspected gang members are facing charges. officers also found nearly 70 gaming machines.

san jose police officer derek antonio was the one arrested. the police officer arrested. he's accuse of giving the gang confidential police information. >> his acts were deplorable. and in no way represent the character of the remaining members of this department who under extraordinary circumstances protect and serve the city with great honor. >> investigators also carried out a similar sweep last year cracking down on gambling and violence at vietnamese cafes. a bill inspired by last year's deadly shooting of kate steinle is sitting on governor brown's desk. the weapon was stolen from a federal agent's car. the state senate yesterday approved a bill requiring all officers in california to lock up any firearms they leave in unattended vehicles. san mateo state senator jerry hill authored that measure. hundreds of guns over the past decade have been stolen or lost by federal and state agencies in california. many were taken from personal

over to mike. >> we had the problems in sunol and i did just find a crash in front of our camera in oakland. so let me show you the two slow areas. the rest of the bay looks great. that's a relief for most folks. here the tri-valley has a big problem. jamming up now from before you get to south of stone ridge down 680 over toward approaching andrade and just off of highway 84. emergency crews from what i understand are still trying to find the exact location of this crash but a motorcycle is down and people reporting that fast lane is blocked. so may just have trouble navigating. foothill road will take you toward the other frontage roads. i think you still have to join that backup. meanwhile, backup southbound 880 in toward hayward. hayward is fine but oakland the approach is jammed up south of high street. the live camera i saw this, from high street down to right there. look, just below our camera. and our building. now, no major injuries reported but this pickup truck suffered a lot of damage taking out about 12 of these little posts on the side of the road. this is a big distraction relating to all of this backup

we have a new details on this frightening crash in the middle of san francisco. investigators say that the taxi cab driver who was driving was not impaired at the time when he slammed into a shoe shine vendor tuesday. that crash seriously injured the owner and an employee. this was on market street and sutter. the driver stayed at the scene and is cooperating with police. he told us over the phone that he's limited as to what he can say right now. >> i'm not allowed to comment, okay? i'm sorry. i'm hoping they will be okay. that's the best i can do. i hope they will be fine. i wish them the best recovery. >> investigators are looking at possible mechanical issues with the taxi and a potential medical condition with the driver. they are also reviewing surveillance video. it is 6:15. new this morning, the pressure

seems to be working. the maker of the life-saving epipen now says it will cut the price by as much as half. that comes after the company milan has been under fire for increasing the price by more than 400%, charging as much as $600 per epipen. during that time the ceo's salary jumped from $2 million to $19 million. other executives also received raises. mylan stock took a hit yesterday after hillary clinton and other lawmakers called the price hike outrageous. so you now get a $300 coupon for a $600 product. >> as opposed to, scott mcgrew, just lowering the price. >> just lowering the price. seems more simple. yes, exactly. mylan this morning offering a $300 discount on its epipens. now, the mylan ceo was on our sister station -- sister network cnbc just moments ago. our reporter asked her that, why not just lower the price? >> look, no one is more

mid 60s but again, low clouds will be the story this morning. by lunchtime i think we will eventually start to clear out. if you're headed around the state over the weekend, keep in mind temperatures coming down everywhere. while it will still be warm, look at maces like the central valley coming out of the triple digits where they've been looking at up with 00 degree weather all month long. going to see cooling there. across parts of the bay area was we get into the bay area. temperatures not as hot. danville, looking at low to mid 80s over the course of this weekend. so here's your forecast for those inland locations. again, temperatures coming down for saturday and sunday. that's when the temperatures will be at their coolest. eventually next week we will start a gradual climb. it's not going to be all that hot. temperatures stay cool and comfortable in san francisco. mostly cloudy through most of the day. we will only see a few peeks of sunshine. let's talk to mike right now tracking the east bay from sunol oakland. >> that's right. two spots with problems again, an on this by. the rest of the bay moves well. zoom in toward 680.

fremont pd and fremont fire sounds like they both been on scene of this injury crash. southbound 680, andrade south of highway 84 and the merge. this has the backup start i don't guess you see top of the screen just around stone ridge, just off the dublin interchange. tough drive right now for the tri-valley. 880 moves well until you get to high street and jazz up toward the coliseum. i do also want to toll you that we have reports of a garbage truck on the shoulder and san leandro and marina. you may see spoke we coming out of that vehicle. live look at oakland shows you that crash. the camera auto focused to this wall. over here, this banged up pickup truck that took out part of the side railing. no major injuries but a big distraction there. and bay bridge toll plaza, backup. that's standard. left approach looking great. watching the east shore freeway with the new lights. 6:21. coming up next, infecting people

developing a vaccine for the zika vir some drug xaeps are believed to be getting very close to developing a vaccine for the zika virus. now comes the harder part, finding volunteers willing to be infected. researchers this winter are planning on conducting the first clinical trials. that's when seemosquitos be r wt be bitingnd it can help speed up a vaccine. they're hoping to find 40 people to take part in this study. one expert believes that when it comes to studies like these, people are usually willing to take that risk. >> it has to be fully informed consent. they are told about all the potential side effects.

56 in san francisco. later on this afternoon, the clouds will stay put at the coastline. that will leave for a mostly cloudy day in san francisco. 63 there. everywhere will see full sunshine, 70s around the inner bay. 80s for the inland valleys. mike is tracking that morning commute. how is it looking? >> we have two specific trouble spots. the rest of the bay looks great. this is a nice thursday for most. tri-valley suffers southbound 680 still jammed from basically 580 all of the way down to just past highway 84. and the merge at pleasanton and li livermore. the motorcycle rider has been taken to the hospital. minor injuries or at least nothing major. that's better news, better than the commute there. very slow 880 from 23rd down toward the coliseum where we see speeds improving. look at your camera. we had that crash took part of the side railing out. that was a distraction. you see the light right lane slo

slows considerably. now, that type of information hopefully will be brought to folks over there in the east shore freeway. i'm going to hand it off for that story. >> let's talk about monitoring that flow of traffic, mike. thank you. staying on the roadway starting today the commute through one very busy stretch of the east bay is supposed to get a whole lot smarter. >> "today in the bay's" pete suratos joins us live from interstate 80 in the east bay where drivers may notice more than 100 new electronic signs. good morning, pete. >> reporter: good morning. this has been a project that's been in the works with caltrans for some time. it's the smart signs that are part of the i-80 smart corridor. right behind me there. the way it works is they're going to light up if there's any issues. this morning we haven't seen them light up here off of the powell street exit in emeryville. the project broke ground in 2011 and meant to release the traffic congestion we see along the 80 west corridor for 300,000 drivers who use the free way daily between the carquinez and bay bridges. i briefly mentioned how it's going to work but with these

signs if there's a green over the lane that you're driving in it means you're in the clear. if there's a yellow sign over it, a yellow x on one of those signs, it means there's an issue ahead. if it's red, it means the lane is blocked up ahead of you. should head over to one of those green lanes. now, the signs will not light up at all if things are all clear. and today when they go on live we're talking about 100 signs that will be activated along the 80 corridor. according to caltrans, 25 lane blocking incidents happen daily along this corridor. so the goal is that these signs will hopefully fix that problem. we're live in emeryville, pete suratos for tonight. >> thank you, pete. new details at 6:33 on san jose's plan to shift police detectives to street patrol. it will go before the city council for a vote . last night they agreed to allow that vote that will take place next tuesday. the police union says it needs 500 officers patrolling the streets. right now they have 413.

kit was a brutal unprovoked attack on a woman and it was all caught on camera. now san francisco police is asking for your help to try of catch the person responsible. this attack happened in the pacific heights neighborhood on saturday. it happened right here. investigators tell us that man walked up to the victim, punched her repeatedly. gets her on the sidewalk and keeps going before walking away. police believe this was a random attack. it's difficult to watch. they tell us the suspect didn't take anything from the woman. they're hoping someone sees this video and recognizes him. 6:44. muni operator recovering this morning after being struck in the head with a skateboard. it happened tuesday night at van ness and bush. examiner reports the operator was attacked by a man on the inbound 47 van ness line. the operator was hospitalized. a female operator allegedly beaten by a man earlier this month rchltsz one more person has been arrested in the beating death of a homeless man. investigators say steven

williams was found floating in a pond in san francisco's golden gate park three months ago. police believe he was brutally assaulted for three days. detectives announce a man from san francisco was arrested yesterday. a woman was caught in arizona earlier this week. two transients have already been charged in the killing. to the hunt for two homicide suspects in hayward. police released these sketches recently in the hopes of nabbing the men who stabbed a 42-year-old man to death earlier this month. that attack happened on cottonwood avenue on august 14th. witnesses told police that they saw the two suspects take off in a white car after the stabbing. if you have any information or if you recognize the faces in the sketches, you're urged to contact hayward police. 6:35. there are loud calls to improve safety on a stretch of highway 116 next to the russian river. after two little girls died in a terrible accident this week. sara marcus lost control of her pickup truck tuesday morning.

it ran off the roadway and plummeted 40 feet into the river. marcus tried to reach 6-year-old caitlyn and 4-year-old haley marcus but just couldn't save them. the family was from the small town of jenner. now some sonoma county leaders are calling for the state to make safety improvements on highway guardrails and flashing lights. 6:36. now to a story we first broke on our news at 6:00 last night. it is another twist in a vallejo woman's bizarre kidnapping for an some case. new documents move that her case is not a hoax. documents come from huntington beach police. officer there's interviewed husband skins last year soon after she was released by her alleged kidnapper matthew muller. huskins account was clear that she and her boyfriend had been drugged by an intruder who then kidnapped huskins. according to that report huskins was never evasive during questioning. that is the opposite of how flis had described the situation. they initially called the case a

hoax saying that huskins denied being a victim. >> these documents are the beginning of a cascade of evidence in the real world that the vallejo police department not only didn't do its job but made things up about the way it did its job. >> vallejo police and city of vallejo are not commenting citing a pending lawsuit. california stays laumt approved a little that allows schools to develop xwhoi ehousing on district property. soaring rel estate prices have been a major barrier in attracting top talent to the san francisco unified school district. that new legislation would allow at least 100 households along with rental assistance for educators. the city has already set up a $2 million development fund that measure now needs governor brown's signature. it's 6:37. time to get another look at our forecast. kind of a cloudy start to our thursday morning. but cooling down. >> yeah. in fact those clouds is what's going to mean for this natural ocean ac to kick in.

coming up on 6:43 on thursd thursday. >> saga continues for volkswagen after they admitted to rigging them to pass tests. in june they reached a $14.7 billion settlement to head off civil claims against the company. today there's going to be a court hearing on those proposed settlement agreements. among the points that volkswagen agreed to, the company is offering to buy back any of the 475,000 effected vehicles or to develop a fix to get vehicle repaired. let's take a live look outside right now. the oakland coliseum, the home of the arss. today team aeners will look at new site. they will be heading out about six miles up 880 from the coliseum to take a tour of howard terminal at the port of

back in low 80s this weekend. that trend will continue. staying cool and kol for theable in san francisco. bottoming out in the low 60s this weekend. so not a bad weekend coming our way. better air quality or today. let's talk to mike and track that morning commute. >> pretty well. we have three key spots i want to point out with issues, slow downs. the rest of the bay, peninsula not a problem. south bay looks good. northbound route is just start your typical pattern. same thing for hayward, 880 southbound from 238. the dumbarton bridge for a little slowing. big slowing but big recovery. from 580 down toward sunol boulevard we have a big slow down and recovery as the earlier crash cleared at andrade. that's not so bad for the tri-valley. we do again have better speeds southbound through pleasanton. 880 better through the coliseum. things start to slow down south of high street and the camera right by hegenberger and the coliseum itself. this is the only stretch with slow traffic. just by the camera across the

week to come. new this morning, authorities in oak had investigating a late night shooting near lake merritt at 10:30 last night at lake mar rhett boulevard. the victim suffered gunshot wounds in his mid section and is now in stable condition. police say up to five people may have been involved in the shooting. to far no arrests have been made. dramatic rescue in pittsburg where a police officer saifts a blind man from his burning home last night. right here you can see all of the smoke coming out of the top of the house. that's near west 11th and york streets. by the time the fire crews arrived a police officer was already pulling the blind man to safety out of the home. the homeowner is being treated for smoke inhalation and that officer that rescued him is also hospitalized after getting hurt from falling glass. no word yet on what started that fire. 6:58. a cooler temperatures you may notice as you head out the door. high temperatures not bad, anthony. >> looking at pretty good conditions. inland valley will feel like a summer day. 70s around the inner bay.
