>> we were looking for a reason to work in that sos song. >> we've been dancing all morning to it. >> it's perfect. it fits. let's get to the top story. the breaking news overnight. police in mississippi say they arrested a man accused of killing two nuns in their home. nbc's janet shamlian is in durant, mississippi, this morning, following all the overnight developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. he is a 46-year-old man from the nearby town. he is charged with two counts of capital murder. rodney sanders was a suspect, but after questioning last night, they had enough to charge him. this morning, police say they have their man, 46-year-old rodney earl sanders of kosciusko, mississippi. charged with two counts of capital murder in the killing of two funs in nearby durant this week. >> it's worse than a tragedy within it's devastating. >> reporter: they were well known by their first names.

sister paula and sister margaret. in one of the poorest counties, they settled with a wish. to serve. >> we make a difference in people's lives. we never know what that difference is. >> reporter: for many of little means, the nuns, both 68, were the only health care providers some residents had ever known, the nurse practitioners serving as doctors, therapists and friends. >> we just see patients and do what needs to be done. >> reporter: for years, they had given tirelessly, ultimately they gave their lives. >> a double homicide. this is about the worst thing that can happen to us since katrina. >> reporter: the women were found stabbed in their home. a back door ajar. apparent victims of a robbery gone wrong, their missing car discovered a mile away. >> their death is a shock to us as you can imagine. we're just deeply grieved. >> reporter: police say sanders was a person of interest early on and after an interview friday evening, they had enough to charge them but it won't

bring back two treasured members of a community. >> they were the most beautiful women that have ever drawn a breath in their bodies. they were totally giving of themselves to everyone. >> reporter: authorities have not said how sanders was implicated or whether he has any personal connection to the funs. he's described as sort of a drifter in this area. meanwhile, services for the two sisters set for next week. sheinelle, back to you. >> janet, thank you. a tropical storm brewing in the caribbean is close to making landfall. that could cause problems for folks along the gulf coast in florida. dave price is here and tracking the storm. what are we seeing? >> let's walk to the weather wall right now and take a look, see what's happening. this is a busy time. typically august is really the high point in the atlantic hurricane season. as you can see, it is living true to form. these four areas are what we are most concerned about.

let's roll over to the southern bohemian islands right now. this is the tropical wave we are watching. in the next five days, a 40% chance this will again strengthen into a tropical storm. we will keep an eye on this one right now. let's look at the things that are going to contribute to the strengthening or weakening. the very warm water in the gulf right now at about 90 degrees. that's fuel to the fire. there are also winds which are shearing this introducing dry air and that may weaken it. again, we will live with our 40% chance that this continues to strengthen. two models now, one, the american model which takes it into the gulf states and the euro which brings it into the southeastern over florida. no mat what happens, we are going to see very heavy rains roll over the peninsula of florida right now. locally, upwards of 5 or more inches over the next several days. it's going to be a very, very wet weekend. let's continue to take a look at what we're expecting over the next several days and, again, we are anticipating that we are

going to see wet weather stretching all the way from florida, straight through to texas over the next 48 hours or so. again, about a 40% chance that this really develops into something even stronger over the next four or five days or so. >> lots of rain in store for folks in the sunshine state. >> you bet, guys. >> your full forecast in just a bit. >> all right. this looming storm comes with fears that it could make battling zika even harder. we have gabe gutierrez in florida with more on that. good morning, gabe. >> reporter: stephanie, good morning. any tropical storm could blow any mosquitoes out of the sky and could leave behind standing water. with more than 40 cases of home grown zika in florida so far, that is something health officials do not want to see. this morning, florida is bracing for a one-two punch mounting fears over zika and now potentially more rain from an

impending tropical system. >> you have to get rid of the standing water. >> reporter: that standing water could lead to more mosquitos. local officials are on alert urging residents to closely watch man-made containers. >> look at your property, drain it, cover it. >> reporter: there are more than 40 home grown cases of zika in four florida counties, but the vast majority of cases have been contracted by traveling outside the country. maria got it in venezuela. her daughter was born without microcephaly, the birth defect characterized by an abnormally small head. her mother says she's terrified about what the future might bring. a study out this week in the journal "radiology" suggests that babies born without obvious zika symptoms can have issues later. uncertainty about the impact prompted the cdc to say all

blood banks nationwide should screen for zika, not just those in florida. sonya knight is eight months pregnant. she took a zika test. after she was bitten by a mosquito. it came back negative. but as hurricane season ramps up, she's worried. >> you are concerned about how your baby is developing and this thing you have no control over in a place like florida. >> reporter: florida's governor has been urging congress to approve more federal funds to fight zika. no matter how much rain this particular system brings to the sunshine state, experts warn that an active hurricane season could potentially divert resources from fighting the virus. stephanie. >> gabe gutierrez, thanks. to politics now. our exclusive interview with the doctor who controversially said donald trump would be the healthiest president ever. kaci hunt is here with more on that and how he is preparing for a big speech on immigration next week. good morning. >> good morning. good to see you. this has been a long and low week on the campaign trail with

>> let's talk about the calls of bigotry and race ifl, really, from both of the candidates. this comes at a time when their favorable ratings are at an all-time high. are these attacks reaching the people in the middle? are they affected? >> the challenge for both of the candidates here is that they could turn off so many voters that each one would have a different set of problems. donald trump really needs his core base, white working class voters to come out in numbers, potentially we haven't seen before. he needs to make sure they want to get out and vote. hillary clinton needs to make sure people aren't complacent. they don't feel she's running so far ahead that they don't need to vote. hillary clinton needs to make sure they are not complacent and she is so far ahead they don't need to vote. she needs the swing voters and african-american voters and hispanics to come out in record numbers. this could turn everyone off. >> what she said in reno and the exclusive yesterday, it seems as if the clinton folks are going

>> reporter: good morning. it's now 80 hours since that initial quake hit. finding survivors at this stage is not going to be easy. rescue teams are not calling it quits just yet. the focus today, accounting for everyone who's missing but also paying respects to the dead. ♪ in italy this morning, grief and final farewells, a day of national mourning. ♪ the search goes on but hope is nearly gone. reality sinking in for those who made it out alive. >> it's really incredible. it's a town that's been around for centuries, turned to rubble in just an instant. now the sea of tents is literally the only thing these folks have to call home. >> reporter: little sophia was born less than three weeks before the quake. she won't remember the horror, her father will never forget. disaster struck in the dead of night. "it was chaos," he tells me "the

walls crumbled, wardrobes fell. we have nothing now." >> reporter: your family survived despite everything. was it luck? "i was fortunate," he says "so many others died." daniela's children made it out alive. her parents did not. "we lost everything," she says," it's all gone." but even here, amidst the darkness, light and life as the nation mourns its dead. a lot of soul searching today as people come to grips with a full scale of this disaster but also some finger pointing. italy has usually done an excellent job of rescuing people after earthquakes but protecting them and buildings ahead of time, that's a different matter. >> lucy kafanov, thank you. back here at home, last it was a night of heavy rain and floods for peopling living in the midwest. in indianapolis, this driver had to abandon the car after the

current began to sweep it away. a flash flood emergency in kansas city, missouri, quickly covered streets and cars there. search crews were dispatched throughout the night to rescue stranded motorists and pedestrians as well. dave price will be back with the full forecast in just a moment. i want to share a tragic story, tragedy for nba star dwyane wade. his 32-year-old cousin was shot to death in chicago on friday while she was pushing her baby in a stroller. police say she was just an innocent bystander caught by cross fire in a confrontation involving three men. wade spoke out earlier this week about chicago's gun violence and took to twitter after his cousin's death to mourn the fact that her four children now don't have a mother. yellow stone national park has been hit with tragedy as well with the death of an employee there. a 21-year-old concession worker from ecuador fell to her death. from the rim of the grand canyon

at the yellow stone river. the incident occurred around 3:15 in the morning when she was with a group of co-workers who saw her fall and called 911. searchers were able to later recover her body. there was a rescue at sea for two stranded boaters, check this out. they've been stuck on this deserted pacific island for more than a week writing s.o.s. in the sand, hoping it would catch the attention of searchers and it worked. >> wow. >> a ship saw their signals friday. a u.s. coast guard vessel was able to pick them up and end that week-long ordeal. can you imagine? >> extraordinary. extraordinary. dave is back. he has a check of the rest of the country's forecast. hey, dave. >> hey, guys. it will be a little bit sloppy as you head to sections of the midwest. let's take a look at it together. here's what we're talking about. kansas city, overnight, you had 4 to 6 inches of rain, just deluge of shower activity. and look, as all of this begins to slowly advance over the midwest. places like chicago, minneapolis, could have some locally heavy downpours.

and pedestrians. crews rescued people from the rising waters. in indianapolis, the fast-moving floods carried cars away. look at this woman. she had to wade through waist-deep water to safety. breaking news overnight as the arrest is made in the stabbing deaths of two nuns. police took rodney earl sanders into custody and charged him with two counts of capital murder. the bodies of the nuns were discovered on thursday after they failed to show up at the clinic where they worked. and now to the doctor who wrote the letter about donald trump's health. dr. harold bornstein said he wrote the letter in five minutes. the doctor said he normally would not have used over the top phrases for a patient, but he probably picked up donald trump's language.
