forecast. tropical moisture coming through hawaii. we'll let you know how it'll impact tomorrow's weather in a few minutes. now we see what is happening in oakland. >> yeah. you talked about maybe low clouds and maybe fog along the coast. keep in mind but the coast toward the altamont pass a smooth drive. pret 580 in oakland around seminary avenue off ramp a little fire there. it sounds like no structures are affected. we'll check on it once chp arrives. an easy drive toward the bay bridge. cash lanes are seeing a few folks in line. that's it. >> mike, thank you. more than a few folks scrambling yesterday. hundreds of people off airplanes and on the tarmac at lax. travelers trying to take shelters after several 9-1-1 calls about shots fired. it happened about 9:00 last night. it was later determined there were no gunshots fired. today in the bay kris sanchez is

live from sjc. even though there was no shooting it sent lax into panic mode. >> reporter: it did, sam. and though there were reports of one arrest, l.a. police just in the last hour confirmed it was not the case that there was one person in a zorro costume briefly detained but unrelated to the scare that created chaos throughout lax. it was about 8:40. lax reopened at 11:00 last night. more than two hours after police rushed terminal eight on reports of gunfire. there was a ground stop for flights and chaos in the airport. >> i heard screaming. hundreds and hundreds of people were running. just like a black friday stampede only screaming at the same time. they were leaving their luggage. everybody cleared out and ran to the back of the terminal.

then a lot of us just tried to remain calm to make sure we didn't trample over babies. we went out the side door and tsa started yelling telling us to get out of the terminal. >> reporter: the threat turned out not to be real. it's too real for travelers who were first terrified and now stuck. 281 flights were delayed as of this morning. two flights cancelled. 27 flights diverted. per the airport tsa and border patrol are working past end of shift. the airport kept concessions open late. it was a false alarm. it did provide a first test of l.a. county's emergency alert system. everyone within a five mile perimeter of the airport got emergency texts to their smartphones and cell phones so they knew what was happening. a lot of questions remain this morning. what was the source of that loud notice that precipitated the 9-1-1 calls.

we're keeping in touch with l.a. police and we'll let you know. in san jose kris sanchez. "today in the bay." >> thank you. it is 5:04. a man behind bars accused of committing walnut creek's first homicide of the year. a s.w.a.t. team arrested 24-year-old larry griffin of bay point for allegedly shooting and killing a man outside a downtown bar. it happened early saturday morning around crogan's sports bar and grill. courtney brown was shot three times in the back. leaving behind a daughter and fiancé. griffin is being held without bail. two young sisters from jenner will be laid to rest. haley and catlin marcus died last tuesday when the pickup truck they were riding in crashed into the russian river. the mother was driving and escaped. she could not get the little girls out of the car seats. the burial will take place east

of bodega. police shot a man after he was running through traffic. he was running on 101 at belmont early sunday morning north of ralston avenue. chp said that man was running through both sides of 101 and through all lanes. police say they tried everything but all of their attempts to get him off the freeway didn't work. >> the pedestrian resisted. a taser was used to, no avail, to try to subdue him. that's when the suspect produced a knife, raised it over his head, and lunged toward the office. >> northbound 101 at san mateo was shut down several hours yesterday for the investigation that followed. that suspect in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. two united airlines pilots are due to appear in scottish court today.

to face charges of being drunk ahead of a flight to new jersey. >> the pilots were arrested a short time before scheduled take off on saturday. passengers experienced about a 10 hour delay as a result. according to scotland's harrold, one of the pilots lives in texas. the other one in mississippi. that incident left some passengers shaken but aviation experts they this case the system worked to keep everyone safe. >> if you are uncomfortable with a member of your crew, you don't fly with them. the safe guards that are in place did, in fact, work. >> the herald reports that the pilots are both senior airmen who have worked in the past as flight instructors. united airlines said it removed those pilots from the flying duties and cooperating with authorities. members of a house subcommittee are expected in the bay area today for a status update on california's high speed rail system, that seems to be developing very slowly. representatives will join high-speed rail leaders at meeting in san francisco to look at the plans for phase one of the rail system. california's high speed rail is still not due to be online for at least a decade. due to delays and cost overruns.

the rail authority last month got the green light to start the first phase of the system stretching between the bay area and bakersfield. it's 5:07 now. a lengthy explanation from colin kaepernick is doing little to stem the controversy surrounding his statement during friday night's national anthem. colin kaepernick refused to stand during the anthem ahead of the team's preseason game at levi stadium. yesterday he opened up to the media to explain why he did. he said he'll continue not to stand until he feels there's a real change in america. >> ultimately, to bring awareness and make people realize what is really going on in this country. there are a lot of things that are going on unjust. people aren't being held accountable for. that's something that needs to change. >> colin kaepernick specifically addressed police brutality against minorities. the nfl, by the way, says it is entirely within colin kaepernick's rights to make that kind of statement. even though fellow players are calling it a distractions and in some cases, offensive.

of a two-alarm fire in we're physicaling breaking news out of san francisco in morning. emergency crews reason 0 the scene of a two of had alarm fire in the 400 block of ministry. that's a few blocks away from the westfield mall. these are some pictures that we're getting in right of the scene. you can see the flames are coming out the top of that building. we don't know what kind of building it is, but it's between mission and howard on sixth street. this is not far away from the san francisco chronicle, as well. we know multiple crews are on the scene attending to the fire. again, it's not clear what kind of structure it is. have a ground crew heading to the scene. we're working to get you live pictures. we'll have a live report coming up as soon as we can. one of mexico's biggest super stars, juan gabriel, has died.

he was found dead yesterday morning of an apparent heart attack. gabriel is known for his showmanship and flamboyant style on stage. fans are leaving flowers on his hollywood walk of fame star. he just performed in los angeles on friday. he was 66 years old. inappropriate spending decisions and attempts to keep secrets from state lawmakers, some of the newest accusations facing a public allegation that was created to protect you. you're talking about the california bar. >> first reported on the agency in february and now lawmakers are taking action and they're crediting his investigation. >> the state bar was created to help consumers ripped off by dishonest attorneys. top executives at the bar take home some of the biggest paychecks in the state government, getting paid more than the governor. the's fund to help consumers is millions of dollars short. according to a recent state audit the fund totaled $2.2

million last year. the bar needed $18.9 million to pay out the bag log of claims. that's a shortage of $16 million. the audit accuses the barf trying to keep the gap secret from lawmakers. even though the lack of funds doubles the amount of time it took to process claims. leaving consumers up to five years to get paid. the bar transferred $2 million into the fund from other resources, but it said the long-term fix might mean raising membership dues that all california attorneys are required to pay. that's nearly $400 each year. the bar also hired private consultants to review the agency's spending including employee salaries. the head of the bar expects those findings by october. back to you. >> thank you very much. if you have a fip for our investigative unit, give us a call 888-996-tips.

there were several nine one calls shortly before 9:00 about shots fired. you see people running around the airport and trying to take shelters. an investigation, though, turned up no evidence of a shooting. the situation caused, as you see there, mass panic, wide spread flight delays. people barricaded themselves in bathrooms and restaurants. traffic outside lax came to a full stop. we spoke with the camera man heading to san jose international airport about what he was seeing there. >> i heard screaming and saw hundreds and hundreds of people running. just like a black friday stampede only screaming at the same time. everybody clear eed out. >> nbc's own lester holt just arrived at lax on a flight from sacramento. he and his wife were headed into the terminal when they were warned to stay. >> i was actually on the tarmac

being driven across the tarmac about to enter terminal four when people started flooding out the door toward the tarmac. there were tsa and other security people saying "run. active shooter. shots fired." thankfully he didn't need to do any reports. it took a hours but lax did return to normal. there are reports that a loud noise or noises that triggered that scare. no word about what the loud noise was. the investigation is ongoing. in the meantime, this morning a man behind bars accused of committing walnut creek's first homicide of the year. a s.w.a.t. team arrested larry griffin of bay point for allegedly shooting and killing a man outside a downtown bar. it happened early saturday morning around crogan's sports bar and grill. the victim was 38-year-old courtney brown was shot three times in his back. leaving behind a daughter and fiancé. that is walnut creek's first

homicide of the year, as we said. griffin is being held without bail. chicago police arrested two brothers for the murder of nba star dwayne wade's cousin. the two suspects 22-year-old darren and his 26-year-old darwin terrell are convicted felonies on parole. both brothers are known gang members. 32-year-old aldridge registered her children for school when she was allegedly shot and killed bit brothers. police reports say the brothers were attempting to shoot another person but the bullet truck struck aldridge. we talk about gun violence a powerful plea to the congress from jackie spear who said the u.s. needs stricter gun laws. congresswoman spear met with members of the community of san mateo. she held a sit in against gun violence. spear said she wants congress to call a vote on universal background checks and banning terrorists from buying guns. >> to make the point you should be able to go to a church,

should be able to go to a movie theater, a school, a dance club, and not fear for your life. people fr as for the folks gathered at the sit in in san mateo organizers chose to do it at a church in honor of the victims killed in the church shooting in charleston, south carolina last year. two people are recovering this morning in san hoe after they were shot in a parking lot of a grocery store. the shoot happened last night on julian street. the suspect shot at the two couples and fled. police say two men were hit. both with non-life threatening injuries. san francisco's police commission holds the last scheduled community meeting focussed on finding a new police chief. they are geared toward finding a permanent replacement for chief greg sur who resigned in may.

acting police chief tony chaplain would be interested in keeping the job. tonight's community meeting takes place tonight at 6:00 p.m. we have more information on a tragic situation here. two young sisters from jenner will reportedly be laid to rest on wednesday. they died last tuesday when the pickup truck crashed into the russian river. the mother was driving and escaped. the burial will take place east of bodega. they started tearing down damaged buildings industrial italy following last week's earthquake that killed almost 300 people. italian authorities promised to investigate whether builders ignoring codes played a role in the high death toll. the firefighters are helping to retrieve possessions that people need but can't get to because their homes could collapse. mark zuckerberg is heading

a flight to new jersey. ==take vo== those pilots were arrsted just a short time before its two united airlines pilots are due to appear in a scottish court to face charges of being drunk ahead of a flight to new jersey. >> the pilots were arrested a short time before scheduled take off on saturday. passengers experienced about a 10 hour delay as a result. according to scott land's herald one of the pilot lives in texas. the other one in mississippi. that incident left some passengers shaken but aviation experts they this case the system worked to keep everyone safe. >> if you are uncomfortable with a member of your crew, you don't fly with them. the safe guards that are in place did, in fact, work. >> the herald reports that the pilots are both senior airmen who have worked in the past as flight instructors. united airlines said it removed those pilots from the flying duties and cooperating with authorities. inappropriate spending decisions in attempt to keep secrets from state lawmakers. >> we're talking about the california bar.

investigative reporter first reported on the agency in february and now law makers are taking action and crediting his investigation. >> the state bar was created to help consumers ripped off by dishonest attorneys. top executives at the bar take home some of the biggest paychecks in the state government, getting paid more than the governor. the's fund to help consumers is millions of dollars short. according to a recent state audit the fund totaled $2.2 million last year. the bar needed $18.9 million to pay out the bag log of claims. that's a shortage of $16 million. the audit accuses the barf trying to keep the gap secret from lawmakers. even though the lack of funds doubles the amount of time it took to process claims. leaving consumers up to five years to get paid. the bar transferred $2 million
