hundreds of passengers run for their lives after reports of a shooting. it turned out to be nothing but it took the airport much of the night to recover. plus sitting out. 49ers colin kaepernick opening up about not standing up for the national anthem during a game. why he says he's going continue this form of protest. and big money. donald trump is in the bay area looking to collect cash for his fight to the white house. forecast. tropical moisture coming through hawaii. we'll let you know how it'll impact tomorrow's weather in a few minutes. now we see what is happening in oakland. >> yeah. you talked about maybe low clouds and maybe fog along the coast. keep in mind but the coast toward the altamont pass a smooth drive. pret 580 in oakland around seminary avenue off ramp a little fire there. it sounds like no structures are affected. we'll check on it once chp arrives. an easy drive toward the bay bridge. cash lanes are seeing a few folks in line. that's it. >> mike, thank you. more than a few folks scrambling yesterday. hundreds of people off airplanes and on the tarmac at lax. travelers trying to take shelters after several 9-1-1 calls about shots fired. it happened about 9:00 last night. it was later determined there were no gunshots fired. today in the bay kris sanchez is

live from sjc. even though there was no shooting it sent lax into panic mode. >> reporter: it did, sam. and though there were reports of one arrest, l.a. police just in the last hour confirmed it was not the case that there was one person in a zorro costume briefly detained but unrelated to the scare that created chaos throughout lax. it was about 8:40. lax reopened at 11:00 last night. more than two hours after police rushed terminal eight on reports of gunfire. there was a ground stop for flights and chaos in the airport. >> i heard screaming. hundreds and hundreds of people were running. just like a black friday stampede only screaming at the same time. they were leaving their luggage. everybody cleared out and ran to the back of the terminal.

then a lot of us just tried to remain calm to make sure we didn't trample over babies. we went out the side door and tsa started yelling telling us to get out of the terminal. >> reporter: the threat turned out not to be real. it's too real for travelers who were first terrified and now stuck. 281 flights were delayed as of this morning. two flights cancelled. 27 flights diverted. per the airport tsa and border patrol are working past end of shift. the airport kept concessions open late. it was a false alarm. it did provide a first test of l.a. county's emergency alert system. everyone within a five mile perimeter of the airport got emergency texts to their smartphones and cell phones so they knew what was happening. a lot of questions remain this morning. what was the source of that loud notice that precipitated the 9-1-1 calls.

"today in the bay." >> thank you. it is 5:04. a man behind bars accused of committing walnut creek's first homicide of the year. a s.w.a.t. team arrested 24-year-old larry griffin of bay point for allegedly shooting and killing a man outside a downtown bar. it happened early saturday morning around crogan's sports bar and grill. courtney brown was shot three times in the back. leaving behind a daughter and fiancé. griffin is being held without bail. two young sisters from jenner will be laid to rest. haley and catlin marcus died last tuesday when the pickup truck they were riding in crashed into the russian river. the mother was driving and escaped. she could not get the little girls out of the car seats. the burial will take place east

of bodega. police shot a man after he was running through traffic. he was running on 101 at belmont early sunday morning north of ralston avenue. chp said that man was running through both sides of 101 and through all lanes. police say they tried everything but all of their attempts to get him off the freeway didn't work. >> the pedestrian resisted. a taser was used to, no avail, to try to subdue him. that's when the suspect produced a knife, raised it over his head, and lunged toward the office. >> northbound 101 at san mateo was shut down several hours yesterday for the investigation that followed. that suspect in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. two united airlines pilots are due to appear in scottish court today.

to face charges of being drunk ahead of a flight to new jersey. >> the pilots were arrested a short time before scheduled take off on saturday. passengers experienced about a 10 hour delay as a result. according to scotland's harrold, one of the pilots lives in texas. the other one in mississippi. that incident left some passengers shaken but aviation experts they this case the system worked to keep everyone safe. >> if you are uncomfortable with a member of your crew, you don't fly with them. the safe guards that are in place did, in fact, work. >> the herald reports that the pilots are both senior airmen who have worked in the past as flight instructors. united airlines said it removed those pilots from the flying duties and cooperating with authorities. members of a house subcommittee are expected in the bay area today for a status update on california's high speed rail system, that seems to be developing very slowly. representatives will join high-speed rail leaders at meeting in san francisco to look at the plans for phase one of the rail system. california's high speed rail is still not due to be online for at least a decade. due to delays and cost overruns.

the rail authority last month got the green light to start the first phase of the system stretching between the bay area and bakersfield. it's 5:07 now. a lengthy explanation from colin kaepernick is doing little to stem the controversy surrounding his statement during friday night's national anthem. colin kaepernick refused to stand during the anthem ahead of the team's preseason game at levi stadium. yesterday he opened up to the media to explain why he did. he said he'll continue not to stand until he feels there's a real change in america. >> ultimately, to bring awareness and make people realize what is really going on in this country. there are a lot of things that are going on unjust. people aren't being held accountable for. that's something that needs to change. >> colin kaepernick specifically addressed police brutality against minorities. the nfl, by the way, says it is entirely within colin kaepernick's rights to make that kind of statement. even though fellow players are calling it a distractions and in some cases, offensive.

area today .. but few details are being released about his decision 2016 republican nominee donald trump will appear in the bay area. not a lot of details, other than that, are being released about his visit. he's going appear on the peninsula for a fund-raiser. there are reports that he'll attend a second one in napa. the peninsula event is definitely a closed event. the campaign team is not indicating when trump might arrive. only he spent yesterday preparing for a debate ahead of the november election. immigration is going to be a huge topic in the upcoming presidential debate, of course. today in the bay tracie potts joins lives from washington. the first debate less than a month away. a lot of people anxious to see how it's going to go. >> reporter: exactly! probably hillary clinton and donald trump among the most anxious. we're hearing they're preparing for debates behind the scenes, but preparing in different ways.

temperatures around the school cast climbing into the low 80s. one of the warmer spots we'll see around the bay area today. here is good news. air quality, for a change, has improved considerably. a lot of smoke being pushed away from the bay area. here is the high resolution mod that looks for the wild fire smoke. the smoke staying to the south. and that in the willow fire. a lot of smoke in the high country toward the sierra but improving air quality around the bay area. i want to show you hurricane madeline near hawaii. it could be crossing the big island as a category one. the moisture aiming toward the bay area. this is mid-level combining with the upper level system, which could give us a slight chance of seeing isolated thunder in the hill tops in the north bay tomorrow. lofts low clouds today. hazy sunshine and later tomorrow areas north of sonoma county stay tuned. even for the overnight and early morning hours. there's a slight risk of thunder

on the coastal range. not today. highs close to 80 in san jose. mild weather continues. san francisco staying in the 60s. north bay temperatures in the 70s and mid 80s around the tri-valley. a look at the seven-day forecast shows increasing wind tomorrow. breezy as the upper level system passes san francisco and across the valley temperatures staying mild and trending a little bit warmer approaching around thursday. now a check object morning commute. >> we're talking about a smooth drive and we have that. we also have mentioned over there 580 at seminary avenue. a little fire off the roadway. we found out from chp it was an abandoned vehicle no one injured and no structures threatened. easy traffic through the area presented no slowing and distractions. so heading toward the bay bridge toll plaza a live look and show you traffic starting to build for these cash lanes. again, about 10 minutes and we should see the metering lights on and the back up filling in on schedule. on the peninsula also on

of a two-alarm fire in we're physicaling breaking news out of san francisco in morning. emergency crews reason 0 the scene of a two of had alarm fire in the 400 block of ministry. that's a few blocks away from the westfield mall. these are some pictures that we're getting in right of the scene. you can see the flames are coming out the top of that building. we don't know what kind of building it is, but it's between mission and howard on sixth street. this is not far away from the san francisco chronicle, as well. we know multiple crews are on the scene attending to the fire. again, it's not clear what kind of structure it is. have a ground crew heading to the scene. we're working to get you live pictures. we'll have a live report coming up as soon as we can. one of mexico's biggest super stars, juan gabriel, has died.

he was found dead yesterday morning of an apparent heart attack. gabriel is known for his showmanship and flamboyant style on stage. fans are leaving flowers on his hollywood walk of fame star. he just performed in los angeles on friday. he was 66 years old. inappropriate spending decisions and attempts to keep secrets from state lawmakers, some of the newest accusations facing a public allegation that was created to protect you. you're talking about the california bar. >> first reported on the agency in february and now lawmakers are taking action and they're crediting his investigation. >> the state bar was created to help consumers ripped off by dishonest attorneys. top executives at the bar take home some of the biggest paychecks in the state government, getting paid more than the governor. the's fund to help consumers is millions of dollars short. according to a recent state audit the fund totaled $2.2

million last year. the bar needed $18.9 million to pay out the bag log of claims. that's a shortage of $16 million. the audit accuses the barf trying to keep the gap secret from lawmakers. even though the lack of funds doubles the amount of time it took to process claims. leaving consumers up to five years to get paid. the bar transferred $2 million into the fund from other resources, but it said the long-term fix might mean raising membership dues that all california attorneys are required to pay. that's nearly $400 each year. the bar also hired private consultants to review the agency's spending including employee salaries. the head of the bar expects those findings by october. back to you. >> thank you very much. if you have a fip for our investigative unit, give us a call 888-996-tips.

are on. >> you'll have to check this. the area of san francisco we're following breaking news. emergency crews on the scene of a two-alarm fire. in the 400 block of ministry. a few blocks away from westfield mall. in between mission and howard. a busy area there. look at the pictures coming into the news room via twitter. multiple crews aren out scene of the fire so far. it's not really clear what type of building the structure is right now. we have a ground crew that is headed to the scene. you see fire crews are there trying to attack the fire from above. we believe it was burning in the attic of that building. you could see some smoke in that area. stay with "today in the bay" this morning. we'll get you updated on blocked streets in that morning. we know the morning commute will be picking up and we'll get live reports as soon as we can. a lot of activity last night at lax and developing story right now. there was panic, there was chaos erupting after reports of an active shooter.

there were several nine one calls shortly before 9:00 about shots fired. you see people running around the airport and trying to take shelters. an investigation, though, turned up no evidence of a shooting. the situation caused, as you see there, mass panic, wide spread flight delays. people barricaded themselves in bathrooms and restaurants. traffic outside lax came to a full stop. we spoke with the camera man heading to san jose international airport about what he was seeing there. >> i heard screaming and saw hundreds and hundreds of people running. just like a black friday stampede only screaming at the same time. everybody clear eed out. >> nbc's own lester holt just arrived at lax on a flight from sacramento. he and his wife were headed into the terminal when they were warned to stay. >> i was actually on the tarmac

being driven across the tarmac about to enter terminal four when people started flooding out the door toward the tarmac. there were tsa and other security people saying "run. active shooter. shots fired." thankfully he didn't need to do any reports. it took a hours but lax did return to normal. there are reports that a loud noise or noises that triggered that scare. no word about what the loud noise was. the investigation is ongoing. in the meantime, this morning a man behind bars accused of committing walnut creek's first homicide of the year. a s.w.a.t. team arrested larry griffin of bay point for allegedly shooting and killing a man outside a downtown bar. it happened early saturday morning around crogan's sports bar and grill. the victim was 38-year-old courtney brown was shot three times in his back. leaving behind a daughter and fiancé. that is walnut creek's first

homicide of the year, as we said. griffin is being held without bail. chicago police arrested two brothers for the murder of nba star dwayne wade's cousin. the two suspects 22-year-old darren and his 26-year-old darwin terrell are convicted felonies on parole. both brothers are known gang members. 32-year-old aldridge registered her children for school when she was allegedly shot and killed bit brothers. police reports say the brothers were attempting to shoot another person but the bullet truck struck aldridge. we talk about gun violence a powerful plea to the congress from jackie spear who said the u.s. needs stricter gun laws. congresswoman spear met with members of the community of san mateo. she held a sit in against gun violence. spear said she wants congress to call a vote on universal background checks and banning terrorists from buying guns. >> to make the point you should be able to go to a church,

should be able to go to a movie theater, a school, a dance club, and not fear for your life. people fr as for the folks gathered at the sit in in san mateo organizers chose to do it at a church in honor of the victims killed in the church shooting in charleston, south carolina last year. two people are recovering this morning in san hoe after they were shot in a parking lot of a grocery store. the shoot happened last night on julian street. the suspect shot at the two couples and fled. police say two men were hit. both with non-life threatening injuries. san francisco's police commission holds the last scheduled community meeting focussed on finding a new police chief. they are geared toward finding a permanent replacement for chief greg sur who resigned in may.

been for much of the night. it started with a water main break last night about 7:00. it happened at rosita avenue. the streets were closed for much of the night. no word on what caused the water main break, and no word, also, on when service will be restored. we turn to developing news where a fast-moving wild fire continues to burn. the willow fire burning between the town of san andreas about 50 miles northeast of stockton. people were forced to evacuate yesterday but the orders were lifted last night. the flames broke out yesterday afternoon quickly spreading to 400 acres. containment is just%. the fire is burning close to the same area where the butte fire destroyed hundreds of homes last year. some san francisco 49ers players traded in their football gear for aprons. >> showing off their culinary skills.

degrees. this will be the fourth time since 1874, if we keep it up, with a daily high temperature stays below 70 degrees for most of the month. and, obviously, today is another one of those days for san francisco. north bay temperature climbing into the 70s. mild weather continues around the tri-valley just south of dublin this morning, mike, south of pleasanton issues already. >> that's right. it will affect folks coming through pleasanton. the tri-valley may get the ripple. we know about the back up at the bay. that's not a surprise. the rest of the commute looking good. southbound 680. we talked about the crash. another reported at sim knoll boulevard. we may have scattered cars along the shoulder because of a report of a crash and number of crashes through the area. we're looking at a slow down off 580. once you pass you're clear fremont for 680.

night before the preseason game against the packers. you see colin kaepernick sitting down on the sidelines while his teammates stand during the national anthem. this, by the way, is not the first time he's sat out the anthem, it's the time a lot of people have taken notice. it's in his interview yesterday colin kaepernick explained he's protesting the way this country, in his mind, treats people of color. specific when it comes to police brutality against minorities. colin kaepernick believes stems from a lack of training for officers. >> ultimately to bring awareness and make people, you know, realize what is going on in this country. there's a lot of things that are going on that are unjust. people aren't being held accountable for, and that something that needs to change. >> we don't think he's a bad teammate because he sits out and voices his opinion on a strong topic but we can't allow this to -- >> reporter: some fans have applauded colin kaepernick on social media, others not so

investigative reporter first reported on the agency in february and now law makers are taking action and crediting his investigation. >> the state bar was created to help consumers ripped off by dishonest attorneys. top executives at the bar take home some of the biggest paychecks in the state government, getting paid more than the governor. the's fund to help consumers is millions of dollars short. according to a recent state audit the fund totaled $2.2 million last year. the bar needed $18.9 million to pay out the bag log of claims. that's a shortage of $16 million. the audit accuses the barf trying to keep the gap secret from lawmakers. even though the lack of funds doubles the amount of time it took to process claims. leaving consumers up to five years to get paid. the bar transferred $2 million
