great outdoor plans you had for labor day weekend. not looking so good. >> we're going to confront al. i mean, talk to al. it's our top story. the weather. a state of emergency in florida. tropical storm hermine expected to make landfall later today. it's already brought heavy rains to the gulf coast. could strengthen into a category 1 hurricane and, yes, the entire east coast is now looking at a wet holiday weekend. let's go right over to al. he's following the storm's path. we'll get to him in a second. let's start with nbc's gabe gutierrez who is in florida this morning. gabe, good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. we've already seen some rain on and off here throughout the morning and as you mentioned hermine is strengthening. the national weather service now saying it's expected to make landfall here in florida either later tonight or in the overnight hours as a hurricane. now, dangerous storm surge is expected and overnight we've

already seen some flash flooding and over the last 24 hours north of tampa. now hurricane warnings are in effect for where we are at in franklin county. mandatory evacuations are also in effect. storm surge expected up to seven feet in some places and hermine is expected to bring up to 5 to 10 inches of rain in some areas even 20 inches in isolated spots. if hermine were to make landfall as a hurricane here in florida, it will be the first hurricane to hit the state in nearly 11 years. it's packing winds up to 65 miles an hour. it's expected to strengthen throughout the next few hours. savannah? >> all right. gabe gutierrez, thank you. >> al is here and he's going to talk about this storm now posing some pretty big problems for what millions of people up and down the coast. >> that's it exactly. it's been 11 years since a hurricane has hit florida. this could strengthen as gabe mentioned to a category 1. latest on hermine, 270 miles south/southwest of florida. looking at the path right now, we expect landfall sometime late this afternoon just to the east and then continues inland until early saturday morning and comes out around the carolina coast but look at this cone of uncertainty that widens out. washington, d.c., philadelphia, new york, parts of connecticut, providence, all of the way up to

boston all have to worry about this system. now, for the first time in four years, we've got a hurricane warning in effect along the gulf coast from panama city down to spring hill. we've got tropical storm warnings as well and we also have to worry about the risk of storm surge. that's when all these waves, this wave energy piles that water up against it and we get flooding moving its way inland. right now we've got storm surges that will peak 1 to 3 feet around tampa. 4 to 7 feet as you get to big bend on top of high tides. we also have to worry about the

possibility of tornadoes from savannah down to tampa. typically small in scale but still we have to watch it. the other big problem is going to be the rainfall. anywhere from 10 to 20 inches of rain especially in northern florida but as you get up into the carolinas and georgia, could be upwards of 7 to 8 inches of rain and coming up in the next half hour, rip currents are going to be a very big problem stretching from florida all of the way into nantucket by the time the labor day weekend is over. >> we talk about plans for the labor day weekend. nothing compared to what could happen along the coast. >> absolutely. let's turn to politics now and headlines there. the long awaited speech on immigration that donald trump delivered to a roaring crowd in phoenix wednesday even after conflicting reports emerged from that surprise visit earlier in the day with the mexican president. in a minute we'll speak to tim

kaine to talk about his thoughts on that speech when he joins us. first, let's go to nbc's hallie jackson. hallie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. this morning already reaction now to donald trump's tough talk on immigration. some of his most conservative supporters are applauding what sounded like a speech trump might have given during the primaries but even some of trump's open surrogates say they feel disappointed with hillary clinton calling it trump's darkest speech yet. in front of a fired up crowd, a fiery donald trump trying to clarify his immigration stance. >> anyone who has entered the united states illegally is subject to deportation. >> reporter: for the roughly 11 million undocumented immigrants living here, no legalization. >> you can't just smuggle in, hunker down, and wait to be legalized. not going to work that way. >> reporter: the gop nominee promising a new deportation task force. trump going after hillary clinton. >> maybe they'll be able to deport her.

>> and reiterating his most consistent campaign pledge. building a border wall. >> and mexico will pay for the wall. 100%. they don't know it yet but they're going to pay for the wall. >> reporter: that confidence coming despite a disagreement just hours earlier over who would cost the cost of the wall after a surprise sit down with mexico's president. i made it clear that mexico will not pay for the wall. a dramatic and diplomatic shift in rhetoric from the gop nominee. just one year ago. >> they're not our friend. believe me. >> reporter: now -- >> i call you a friend. thank you. >> reporter: hillary clinton calling it a photo-op. >> it certainly takes more than trying to make up for a year of insults and insinuations by dropping in on our neighbors for a few hours. >> reporter: trump insiders tell

nbc news the candidate insisted his visit happened the same day as his big immigration speech. both trips showing two types of trump in mexico a softer touch. >> we had a very direct and constructive exchange of ideas. >> reporter: in arizona, a harder line. >> we will break the cycle of amnesty and illegal immigration. >> reporter: and this morning trump is making even more clear his stance on the border wall tweeting again, mexico will pay for it. he's not backing down even as he makes some new overtures to the country with his surrogates showing off new swag. you know those hats that say make america great again. we saw hats saying make mexico great again also. matt, savannah? >> hallie jackson, thank you. tim kaine is the vice presidential nominee on hillary clinton's democratic ticket.

good morning. good to see you. >> good to be with you. thanks. >> i want to start with this meeting with mexico's president. afterward, there were conflicting reports of whether or not they talked about who in fact would pay for this wall on the border. mr. trump said it didn't come up. the president of mexico said, yes, it came up early in the meeting and he told mr. trump that mexico wouldn't pay. both can't be right. which one is trying to save face in your opinion? >> well, i think this is kind of a diplomatic amateur hour by donald trump. what are the odds, matt, that he has been telling the american public for months now we're building a wall and mexico is going to pay for it, but then that did not come up in the meeting? i find that kind of ridiculous. even if it didn't come up, he choked and forgot to say that to

the president of mexico after he's been saying it every day for the last many months? so i find his statement that he didn't bring up even if it's true, it shows that he sort of folded under pressure and didn't have the backbone to say to the mexican president what he's been saying over and over. >> the optics of this, donald trump stood there with the mexican president. he was toned down. no outrageous rhetoric. he seemed to be on his best -- even his best presidential behavior. is that one of the difficult things for you running against a donald trump that you never know exactly which donald trump you're going to get? >> you know, i think the important thing about leadership is you have to be consistent. you can't say different things to different audiences. and so, you know, he came back across the border and it's about mexico is going to build a wall. mexico is going to pay for it. he was divisive.

he says america is going to be deportation nation. but when he's looking the leader of mexico in the eye, he can't bring himself to say it. that tells me something about his backbone and his resolve and so it's an interesting -- yesterday was an interested display of, i think, kind of a diplomatic lack of resolve and then this language of division deportation that shows that donald trump is not changing anything. >> back to optics for a second. if you look at the side by side of this week, donald trump went to mexico. he sat down. he had a dignified meeting with a foreign leader. hillary clinton spent most of this week scooping up money in the hamptons for fundraisers. doesn't trump come out on top on that? >> i don't think so. do the contrast in 24 hours yesterday. donald trump choked on the fundamental promise that he's making in this campaign when he had the opportunity to talk to the foreign leader about it by his words he didn't bring it up. by the leader's words. it did come up. i told trump we're not paying

for your wall. so that just shows that i think kind of not ready for prime time but then back over on this side of the border, he just doubles down on this divisive deportation nation strategy. >> let's talk about the state of the race. most national polls we're seeing battleground polls show a tightening race. that's the trend. and if you look into some of those polls, what you see really it's a matter of hillary clinton's favorability ratings actually going down. the question is if trump is as weak a candidate as you portray, why isn't she putting it away? >> i encouraged secretary clinton to run in april of 2014. i gave a speech in south carolina and i said i hope that she runs, and we talked about it. i said make no mistake, this is going to be incredibly difficult.

i think it will be hard. you cannot assume anything. you're trying to do something that nobody has ever done before. i always assumed this race would be hard. we feel good about our position in a number of true battleground states. we don't feel any sense of complacency. we're organizing and making our case to voters every day because we felt from the beginning this would be very, very difficult. >> senator tim kaine, thank you for your time this morning. i appreciate it. >> you bet. thank you, guys. good to be with you. we turn to a possible game changer in the fight against alzheimer's. researchers announcing an experimental drug produced results in slowing memory loss in some patients. dr. natalie azar is with us now. explain what's going on. >> we want to say we want to temper the enthusiasm. previous drugs have shown promise in early phase one trials and gone on to not show significant improvement in patients clinically. that's kind of important. we don't know what causes alzheimer's.

we do know it's characterized by these abnormal plaques of protein in the brain. patients given this drug for a year and in a time and dose dependent manner had a significant reduction of these plaques which means people that got highest dose had almost complete disappearance of these plaques. i want to say again does that translate something meaningful in terms of cognitive function. >> just because you have a reduction in the protein plaques doesn't mean you slow the production of memory and thinking problems or even halt the progression. >> exactly. here's where the important thing is that we do know that these plaques can start to surface years, even a decade before symptoms start so imagine if you could take a population of people who are at risk, either by screening or genetic risk and give them this drug that early and prevent the plaque from ever developing, could that translate into a truly meaningful treatment for alzheimer's? >> the notion being something

that speaks to prevention or stopping it before we get to this terrible situation. >> can you imagine? right now there are two phase three trials ongoing. >> small study. >> right now 165 patients of phase one trial. we're hoping to have data by 2020. if we can show halting in memory decline and improvement in cognitive function, cautiously optimistic. >> let's get caught up on other news. >> president obama will make a very unusual visit to midway today. land halfway between asia and north america. it's the next stop on a whirlwind ten-day trip. he'll then fly to china for the g-20 summit and meeting with

china's president. breaking news out of cape canaveral, florida, where there was an explosion at the spacex facility. tom costello joins us with more. >> spacex was conducting a test firing of their falcon rocket with this happened. this was a static test, just making sure the engines were working properly before the launch, which is set for this saturday. that mission was to carry an israeli communications satellite into space. this morning's explosion shook buldings several miles away. no reports of any injuries at this point. we don't know how much damage there might be on the ground. spacex is so far not commenting. hovering over the launch site. as you probably know, space yn x was founded by elon musk. they have flown nine unmanned missions to the station. also has a contract to develop a

all of this is putting a major damper on labor day plans just ahead the holiday weekend. donald trump is back on the campaign trail this morning after a quick trip south of the border before wednesday night's big speech on immigration in arizona. he emphasized he's not softening his stance on immigration. differing accounts of his conversation with the mexican president quickly emerged with trump reiterating his claim that mexico will pay for the wall he wants to build on the border while the mexican president insists his country will do no such thing. restoration work on the u.s. capitol dome is almost finished on time and under budget. house speaker paul ryan announced a two-year $60 million project will be ready before the president inauguration. the last time the dome was spiffed up was back in 1960. let us start this half hour with the story of two women that documented almost every detail of their lavish dream vacation on social media.

one detail they didn't post how $22 million worth of cocaine managed to get into their suitcases. now they're facing life in prison and nbc's keir simmons has their story. keir, good morning to you. >> good morning. this is one of the pictures that the two women posted of the cruise ship they apparently made their home for almost two months. it is stunning. so was the outcome of their trip though not in the same way. the two women and a third man all from canada arrested accused of smuggling around 200 pounds of cocaine. it was a memorable vacation. the women posting pictures on instagram and facebook in stunning locations drinking from coconuts recording video selfies by the ship's luxurious pool writing next to this picture in the tropics i respect animals more than people. in 49 days there were 17 ports

of call. including stops in europe, across the pacific and australia. but their trip ended in jail. the women accused of drug smuggling. >> this is the biggest seizure of narcotics through airports or cruise ships. >> the australian border force warning international drug syndicates we know all of the different ways you try to smuggle drugs. the women facing a life prison term according to reports. early postings in early july leaving england. a picture from inside the lavish sea princess cruise ship. this shot god save the queen and then new york visiting times square and then according to instagram it's to bermuda and columbia isabelle posts a picture and writes in spanish shopping trip. there was four wheeling in peru.

they even appeared to get tattoos in tahiti hashtag dumb and dumber. when it docked in australia, around 200 pounds of the drug were seized. that's reports valuing it at $22 million. >> a lot of work went into this particular operation. it's not the sort of operation where you turn up to a cruise ship and wander on and happen to come across 90 kilograms of cocaine. it's beautiful out there one of the women had written and now looking at the inside of a prison cell. the third man is reportedly in his 60s. all will appear again in court in october and nbc news did reach out to the women's family. we have no word from them. we weren't able to contact them or their legal advisers so far. matt? >> long time until they take another cruise. keir simmons, thank you very much. let us check in with mr. roker and there's so much going on in your neck of the woods as we say. >> there certainly is.

the other part about hermine that we want to talk about is the rip currents. even if you're not directly affected by hermine, the impact for most of the east coast stretching from port st. lucie all the way up into connecticut and could affect nantucket. it's a danger for all levels of swimmers. pay attention to your lifeguards if the beach isn't guarded by a lifeguard, be careful. we have to watch hurricane lester in the pacific. right now 835 miles east of hilo, hawaii. 110-mile-per-hour winds. it's moving west at 14. right now it looks like it will move north of much of the hawaiian island chain but they are going to see rain and winds before it's all over and as you can see on the day today, a risk of strong storms down through florida. hermine threatens there. wet weather through the southwest. rainy and cool up into the pacific northwest. that's what's going on around the country. here

our stories on the true crime stories of our time. 15 years ago the nation was shocked to hear about this case. rusty yates returned home from work to a nightmare. his five children had been drown in the bathtub by their own mother, his wife, andrea yates. nbc's janet shamlian sat down with one of the few people that remains in contact with andrea yates as she lives out her days in a mental hospital. >> reporter: it was a crime that horrified the nation in june of 2001. 15 years ago. andrea yates drowning her five children in the bathtub of her houston area home. she then called 911 to report what she had done. >> do you need an ambulance? >> no. i need a police officer. >> noah, john, paul, luke and baby mary. seven years to just six months old. her husband, rusty, was working at the time. he returned to a scene of sheer terror. >> cops were crying. there was a lot of emotion there.

and you know, it's always the worst time of the day is the morning. kids are fighting. there's a power struggle. and no one gets out of the door in time. it sets up a schedule of different activities. you can set the timer and give it to them. so they'll have a minute to make their bed and brush their teeth and when they're done, they can get stars and awards and basically it means the phone does all of the nagging for you. you can concentrate on having good conversations with them. >> makes it like a game. >> gives them control over their own schedule as well. >> we're out the door. let's talk about the commute. kids like to fight over the radio. you have a solution. >> it's time to get the brain working on the way to school. podcasts are really a great thing to listen to on the way. the one we like is called pocket cast. this is an app that cost $2.99. easy to subscribe to things. you can go through and pick the

podcast you want. we like podcast called story pirates where kids write stories and then these really funny comic actors act them out. gets creative juices flowing and hit school with their brains activated. >> homework time. another struggling situation for a lot of parents. >> one of the struggles is sometimes your kids ask you for help and you don't remember -- >> google it. >> and now schools teach math in different ways you may not understand. khan academy is the gold standard. it's a series of videos and exercises that can help kids stay up to date but also parents can use this maybe while their kids are at school so when kids come home, they know what they're dealing with and they can look brilliant. >> it's true. for some of us, a long time since we studied those subjects. okay. meal planning.

many times you sit there and go what am i going to make? you have an app for that. >> you either do the same go-to things again and again and again or you spend hours looking through recipe books and online. so this is a subscription service called gathered table. for seven or eight bucks a month, they'll suggest meals for you and plan it out on a calendar and you can actually import your favorite recipes and organize it all on a smart grocery list as well. you can go to the -- >> are there degrees of difficulty for these things? >> they are all makeable things. >> nothing fancy. and then your final app. tell us about this. it justifies giving your kids screen time. i know a lot of us -- >> i'm uptight about screen time. sometimes what are you going to do? you have to go do something. at least you can make sure that your kid is being active and working on something opposed to just passively receiving stuff. this is the everything machine. it's kind of an introduction to

programming. what you can do is there are icons that you can move around and make your phone do things. so for instance in this one if you get your face on the camera, the light lights up. when you talk to technologists they talk about when they were kids they learn they could control the computer and a mind-blowing experience that was. it's letting kids do things with the phone and be creative. >> i like that it has an educational aspect. appreciate it. coming up next, we'll cook papaya next with katie lee's magic touch. on a thursday morning, this is "today" on nbc.

nearly two does different herbs and veggies and katie lee will make the most out of the bounty. good to see you. summer wrapping up. you're making one of my favorite dishes. you think it's great for any time of the year but i think' good for the summer dish. >> i love it. you buy this stuff and bring it home and wonder what to do with it now. it's great from the farmer's market. >> let's look at the ingredient grid. the things that jump out at you. you have two kinds of sausage here. >> sausage, chicken, but you could substitute shrimp if you wanted to or any kind. >> we have some bacon. >> bacon, zucchini, all stuff at its peak. first step is the meat. i have chicken legs. and some sausage in here. i'm using canola oil.

it has a higher smoke point so it's good for the grill and garlic salt to give it more flavor. toss it around in there. >> you do that well in advance or right before you cook it? >> you can do it before. matt if you'll put that on the grill for me. chicken you should grill at medium heat so it doesn't dry out. and the skin doesn't char before the rest of it. it will cook for 20 or 25 minutes until it registers 165. >> i'll be back with you in a second. talk about vegetables. >> same thing. zucchini, squash, tomatoes, oil on there and some garlic salt and pepper. and these cook for a lot less time, only a couple minutes. you want tomatoes to get blistered and yummy. >> just don't want that to fall off. go ahead. >> and next step is the rice. this is really the base. >> can i stop you for a second? i love paella but i don't like paella when the rice is mushy. i like a crunch to the rice. >> that's the best part. i'm using already cooked rice and corn off the cob, green onions and bacon.

bacon will help it crisp up because that's got that fat in there and it's going to give it a lot of flavor. you can even use leftover rice. you know when you have those containers from the chinese takeout. >> yes. >> a great way to use it. i'm actually doing this in a cast iron skillet instead of a paella pan so you don't have to have a special pan for this. >> you know what's amazing, we have our tasters at the table. they began eating this dish in our 7:30 half hour. >> crispy rice is unbelievable. >> the two sausages, chicken and vegetables are perfect. >> awesome. >> i want to know where charlie is. don't you think he would like some paella? >> he gets the leftovers. >> there won't be leftovers. >> you are pressing it down. >> i press it all of the way in. you want that rice to have good contact with the bottom of the pan so it gets crunchy. you can put this right on the grill at high heat for 20 to 25 minutes. it's not going to burn. that's how you get the crunch. >> do you scrape the bottom? >> you can scrape it.

i'll add to it some sun-dried tomatoes and lemon zest. >> i'll hold that for you. >> you will add fresh herbs. a lot of fresh herbs and lemon juice. use whatever herbs you have. i'm using basil, cilantro and parsley in this one. >> i'm making a little bit of a mess. one time i did lemon basil. that tasted great. add the protein. so we've got our sausage and chicken that's already cooked. >> you're putting the whole pieces of chicken there, you wouldn't take it off the bone? >> you don't have to take it off the bone. you can slice sausage if you like. i've done this with leftover ribs before which is great. shrimp is really good. there's all kinds of things you can do with it. now put some of that vegetable in here, too. >> okay. guys, what's your favorite kind of paella? >> this. >> do you like seafood? of course. >> seriously though. >> do you like it? >> it's good. you nailed it. >> yeah! i love it when they like it. >> with seafood you have to peel the shrimp. this is easy.

we'll have rip currents. it will be a mess. we have storm surge so you'll have that water pushing up. upwards of seven feet of water on top of high tides around that big ben area. we have to worry about tornadoes from savannah through tampa for tonight. smaller tornadoes but still can do a lot of damage. and again the rainfall. some areas of northern florida and panhandle could see 20 inches of rain. four to eight inches into southeastern georgia, eastern north carolina could see that heavy rain and we've got rip currents also from southern florida all of the way into atlantic city, new york, long island and could reach up into nantucket. that's dangerous for all swimmers. a lot of folks if you're along the eastern seaboard, you'll have to pay attention to what's been going on over the next 72 hours. that's what's going on good thursday morning, meteorologist anthony slaughter here. we're going to see another nice day. the clouds will lead to a cool day.
