protest. the police officers association is warning that officer may stop working 49ers' football game. we reported the story yesterday, and just last night, frank saunders, president of the santa clara police union spoke exclusively with us and the union delivered this letter yesterday saying if something is not done about kaepernick, they may stop working the games. >> i'm already hearing it this week that next week on monday night physical, some officers are not going to work. the totality of the circumstances we felt, let's go talk to the 49ers and have them deal with their employee. >> the letter said officers are upset over kaepernick's blanket statements how officers, quote, murder minorities, and upset the organization allowed kaepernick to wear socks that depict pigs in police uniforms. >> the 49ers are letting this

turner carried out a bag of personal items, ignored cameras and reporters, and jumped into a waiting suv. >> getting out so early. >> hours later, anger outside his family home in ohio where turn turner serves out probation. they were there to let the registered sex offender know he's not welcome in the dayton, ohio suburbs. turner faces some tough restrictions as a tier 3 sex offender. and "today" obtained photos from the night brock turner assaulted his victim. among the pictures, thee, showing dirt and numerous scratches on his hands, back, and stomach. these marks are likely the result of being chased and pinned down by two stanford students who were biking by when they saw turner on top of the unconscious woman. there are photos showing where on campus that attack happened. protesters gathered again to push for the recall of the judge

levi's stadium 49ers open seasoai it is saturday morning, a live look outside at levi stadium where in nine days, the 49ers open their season against the l.a. rams. that is next monday. i think that's the first time i said "l.a. rams," funky. the bay area's best known mayors are targeting sugary drinks together. san francisco mayor ed lee and oakland mayor gathered supporters for proposition b and oakland's measure hh yesterday. both measures aim to tax sugary beverages in hopes of making them less attractive to consumers. each measure levies a one penny per ounce tax on all sugar drinks, and it would be paid by the distributors. >> we are smarter than

succumbing to the soda industry, but we also have to be smart for our own selfs and families. >> the mayors say money raised would go towards education to help fight childhood diabetes, but critics claim the measures end up increasing the price we pay for most groceries. just days before apple is expected to unveil its newest iphone, one of the company's biggest competitors, samsung, announces a recall of more than 2 million smart phones. our business and tech reporter says the phone in question is bursting into flames. >> what? my phone. >> samsung got a lot of attention for water resistant and apparently champagne resistant phones, but the bubble is likely on ice after a massive recall of samsung's newest phone, the galaxy note 7. >> it's a pretty big recall. we've not had a flag ship recall, no mainstream phone recalls like this in this

power in florida. a flash flood watch is issued for parts of the carolinas through this morning. that system could strike coastal areas through new england by labor day on monday. well, here in the bay area, it's not so bad. we have a slight cool down from the unofficial enof summer. let's check in with anthony slaughter were a look at the holiday weekend forecast. >> nothing like the east coast. >> no. >> we have quiet weather here at home. not as much fog as we usually do. it's cool as we close out the unofficial end of summer. it's cool now, but i got something to show you that may have you breaking out the swim trunks for the next weekend and headed to the beach. let's talk about your weather. >> all right. >> all right. here we go. 58 degrees in san jose, we expect a high there of 79. very comfortable later on this afternoon. this is what to expect in the week ahead, cool morning,

comfortable afternoon, and then as we head towards labor day, very similar weather, widespread 60s and 70s, but actually temperatures really start to ramp up, and return of 90s back in the forecast. 57 now in san francisco. 59 in the tri-valley, 58 in the south bay, and 51 in the peninsula. once the sun is all the way up over the horizon, cool ocean air is not going to allow temperatures to warm that much today. comfortable in san francisco, in the 60s, 71 in the pennsylvania la, and 78 in the south bay. let's talk about the tropics. a lot happening of the you hear about it all week. this is hawaii. there is hurricane lester, a category 2 storm, winds at the center of 100 miles per hour, but notice how it's moving. this thing is just to the north of the hawaii island chain, too close for comfort if you ask me. traveling there, the good news is it is moving away from the islands over the next couple

days. the main threat here is you'll see stray showers and the surf will kick up anywhere from 20-30 foot waves expected there. that's not unusual for hawaii, but, again, very close, if you ask me. here's another system across parts of the eastern sea board, hermine, you heard about it. making its way in the southeast now and going up the eastern sea board. he's the interesting thing of it all. it's going to stall out and sit. it's not going to move fast like it moved through florida and georgia. in fact, look at the track. this is sunday, tomorrow, still pretty much where it sets, and then look how it moves just throughout the week. this is thursday, so places that are dealing with rain right now are most likely going to continue to deal with it for several days. flooding threat and storm surge threat is an issue there. here at home, quiet weather continues. storm track to the north, high pressure in control. you see the bridge there, that's a trough keeping things cool this weekend. look how it shifts east as we

>> this is the week. checking in in a little bit, anthony, thanks. a developing story this morning from the midwest. a 5.6 earthquake rocked oklahoma and felt throughout the great plains, and people in iowa and minnesota felt it this morning. this ties a 2011 quake for the biggest on record in the state of oklahoma. so far, no word on any damage nor injuries. new fallout in colin kaepernick's ongoing high profile protest. the that clara police officers association says they may stop working the football games. we first reported this story yesterday, and this morning, it's making national headlines. just last night, frank saunders, president of the santa clara police union, spoke exclusively to bay area, and says the union hand delivered this letter to the 49ers yesterday saying if something isn't done about kaepernick, they may stop working the game. >> i'm already hearing it this

58 degrees, 79 later on this afternoon. another comfortable day, and headlines for the week ahead really are cool air in place with afternoon sunshine each and every morning through labor day. temperatures below average, 60 and 70, and next week, though, warming up back in the 90s for inland valleys. right now, temperatures in the 50s in the south bay, 6 1 in th peninsula. sunshine and for san francisco, still cludy there. clouds will go away, and 65 for there. 84 in the tri-valley, and 80 in the north bay, and cool and comfortable, even the south bay, 78 degrees. all right. switching gears to hawaii. this is the big island. you can see the island chain there. this is lester, category 2 hurricane barrelling north of the island. winds up to 100 miles per hour. the good news here is that it is going to stay north of the

island, but it is going to kick up dangerous surf over the next couple days through tomorrow, and notice the track is well north of the island, getting stray showers off towards the north, but not expecting a direct land fall, which is good news, but it is staying close to places like honolulu and hawaii as it gets towards tomorrow. again, passing blow for the islands. here at home, we have our own system that we're dealing with across the eastern sea board. this is hermine, you heard about it, making its way through the gulf coast, and now to the atlantic coast, eastern sea board, and mid atlantic states. it's going stall out. here's the unfortunate news for the folks because once it stalls out, it's pushing water inland. storm serge increases, and coast tallal locations expecting rain the coast and coupled with the storm throughout the rest of the week by thursday. they will be tired of dealing with the system and lots and

years. your tax dollars have been upgrading bridges in the state. will the bridges in the area with stand the next major tumbler? >> there are 25,000 bridges in california, over 3,000 have been retrofitted to protect you in the next of the of the next major earthquake, but some of those improvements happened decades ago, and as we discovered, they now need to be upgraded again. the question is, how much longer can we afford to wait? >> we're living on, in a sense, borrowed time. >> reporter: david schwartz studied earthquakes for over 40 years and specializes in analyzing past quakes and helps of determining a possible timeline for future tremors. when would the bay area see the next big earthquake? >> could be while we have the conversation. the longer we go without a large

earthquake just, in the bigger picture, something large happening. >> reporter: it's been 110 years since 7 or larger quake rattled the bay area. this is what san francisco looked like after the 7.8 quake. leading up to that, earthquakes shook the area pretty often, but after that massive earthquake in 1906, we had far fewer disasters, that is until lo loma prieta, and that was 27 years ago. the shock did not come from a major fault line so scientists believe there's a buildup of pressure underneath the bay area that's ready to burst. here's why. underground earth's rough edges are trying to move past each other on fault lines. that builds up energy, and when it gets to be too much, the earth lets off waves that shake the surface. >> that pressure happened to release. >> what goes into the system as stress comes out as slip on

faults released in earthquakes. >> earthquakes. 171 bridges across california still need to be retrofitted to withstand the next big earthquake. more than 3,000 bridges have been upgraded over the past three years. the state now says some of those bridges need to be upgraded again because of new earthquake standards and wear and tear. >> a lot of them are steel, and they corrode over time. >> reporter: michael johnson with the department transportation and says the state can't afford to make all the fixes at the same time. >> that exceeds what the didn't has available. we have to prioritize, and we prioritize very well. >> riding on the bridges that are identified that need to be fixed again? >> absolutely. >> reporter: last yearings we told you about the's plan to identify which bridges should get upgrades first. now california is unveiling that strategy to improve 35 bridges
