morning after getting hit by a pick-up truck - he was coming h breaking news. this morning a teen we in the hospital after getting struck by a pickup truck while he was riding his bike home from fishing on this long weekend. plus, extremely dangerous. the search is on in the south bay for this man who police say tried to kidnap two young girls. he has a prior record. a no show. colin kaepernick leaving an entire church full of people waiting in san francisco. the 49ers quarterback was supposed to speak about his protest that garnered national attention. by the afternoon the warmest day of our three-day holiday weekend today today we should see low to mid 80s today. the big picture the seven-day forecast will be one of the cooler days we've seen for awhile in mid 90s. we'll talk about when the heat will arrive coming up in the next weather forecast. >> thank you, rob. we're following breaking news out of the east bay there have been a series of crashes on interstate 880 after police say thieves stole vehicles from a fremont car dealership. here is what happened. investigators say a security guard at the dealership began chasing down the suspects after they got away with those vehicles. at some point, the suspects crashed the vehicles between fremont and hayward on 880. all lanes were shut down of 880. but they're now open again. we have a crew headed in that direction. we'll bring you a live report at 5:30. breaking this morning a 14-year-old boy is recovering after he was hit by a car in oakland.

police say the boy was riding his bike on the sidewalk after spending the day fishing, then swerved on to the street, off the sidewalk, to pass some pedestrians. that's when he was hit by a pickup truck. the driver of the truck did stop after the crash and is cooperating with the investigation. no word at this point exactly how that boy is doing. more news breaking news internationally now out of israel. a building collapsed in tel-aviv and at least two people have died. we're getting new information on this rescue minute by minute. it's the first look we've gotten this morning of video of the scene. that's the collapsed building. you see emergency workers there trying to help those who might be trapped. initially there were reports that 20 people were trapped beneath that rubble. there is still plenty of confusion as to how many are trapped this morning as crews continue their search. fire officials say it began with a collapse of a multilevel underground parking garage in the the process of being built.

. they said it brought down a crane causing part of a building to collapse. we'll follow the breaking news and bring you the most updated information as soon as we have it. extremely dangerous san jose police are looking for this man the 56-year-old accused of trying to kidnap two girls. "today in the bay's" bob redell is live. the suspect is convicted sex offender. do we know what he's done in the past? >> reporter: we do a little bit. according to the megagus law website. david lee rustle has at least two convictions for sex offenses related crimes. police in san jose believe the 56-year-old russell tried to kidnap two young girls. it happened monday of last week at the intersection of hamilton and meridian. the second attempt allegedly happening on thursday at

hillsdale. it's not far from the silicon valley career education technical center. both of these happened around 5:00 in the evening. in both instances girls were able to get away from russell. >> that's sad. i drive around at night for my job, and i think that's scary. i'm here delivering an order now. it's scary. that could have been me. >> reporter: san jose police tell us they're familiar with russell. he's a transient who spent a lot of time in the san jose area. his last known former address is on an apartment on bascom avenue. he was last seen driving a white nissan rogue we put an image of the vehicle on the tv screen. it's an suv. in this particular instance, police say that russell's white nissan rogue does not have any license plates. reporting live outside the san jose police headquarters bob redell "today in the bay."

>> bob, thank you very much. shots fired in the middle of traffic. it started with a hit-and-run crash. this morning police want to talk to anyone who might have seen what happened. this was the scene about 5:00 yesterday evening on 880 near the high street off ramp. officers say the driver of the silver her say domercedes struc, and the driver got out and started running and opened fire. no one was struck by the gunfire. two people were injured in the crash. the gunman, we're told, is still on the loose. after days of speculation nbc confirmed that former stanford swimmer and convicted sex offender brock turner is back home in hoohio. turner was released on friday, which we brought you live and breaking news during that time. now turner served three months of a six month sentence for sexually assaulting an

unconscious woman. the case drew national headlines about alleged white privilege, and sentencing because many people saw it as a lenient sentence. some of turner's ohio neighbors aring c asking people to move on. >> she has come to terms with it. in her own statement she agreed she has come to terms with it. the best anyone can to is let people live their lives. the judge who sentenced turner stopped hearing criminal cases, under public pressure. there's a bill on the governor's desk that would close the loophole that lead to turner's light sentence. the the san francisco police officer association made its choice for the city's next top cop. they want tony chaplin to continue on as the permanent chief. the president of the poa said officers believe tony chaplin is the right leader at the right time for san francisco. the support comes as at least 60

applications right now are being reviewed for the job. chaplin was appointed acting chief after former chief greg suhr resigned under scrutiny following several controversial officer-involved shootings. the issue of policing in minority communities has been at the front and center of colin kaepernick's stance. well, now silence from colin kaepernick. he usually plays on sunday. yesterday a packed church wanted to hear what he had to say. he promised he would speak there. t he was supposed to about racism and his own silent protest to third baptist church. >> colin kaepernick stood them up. >> reporter: just after the choir finished, the reverend told the congregation that colin kaepernick was not coming. because of the rigorous training schedule. >> maybe he cold feet or over chit comm committed. >> vasquez brought a dozen of his students to be among of roughly 200 people.

the tech giant is expected to debut the next big idea this week. this is the invitation sent out by apple last week. the company did not provide any details or say what products will it will show. the tech giant is expected to reveal the iphone 7 at the media event on wednesday. many experts believe that apple will get rid of the headphone jack for the iphone 7 and replace it with a new kind. >> there might be plenty of iphones out there. burning man is not known for luxuries. some vandals felt a campground was not real enough for the festival. the sheriff's department is investigating vandalism of the white ocean camp. the group wrote on facebook that the vandals glued doors shut, flooded the camp, allegedly. white ocean is considered so-called luxury camp and hosts deejays. some feel it goes against the

essence of radical self-reliance of burning man. when the next big earthquake strikes the area, will the bridges be able to withstand that? >> our investigative reporter has been looking into the bridges in the area that are in need of pricey maintenance. work that could keep us safer during the next major earthquake. good morning. scientists believe seismic pressure has been building beneath the bay area for decades. so they fear a large-scale earthquake is now inevitable. 171 bridges across california still need to be retrofitted to withstand the next big quake. more than 3,000 bridges have been upgraded over the past 30 years. the state said some of the bridges need to be upgraded again because of new earthquake standards and wear and tear. it's an expensive undertaking as we discovered it's one the government can't totally afford now. it's making the improvements in stages. 35 bridges across the state will get those fixes over the next

environment. >> the boat was leaking a amount of diesel. crews are working to cap the leak. there were two people on board the boat when it started to sink. they were able to get off the boat without any issues regarding injury. >> that's amazing there were only two people given it's a tour boat. it could have been worse. regardless, probably a good day to be on the water. >> we have temperatures in the 80s around the delta and into the east bay. we're talking mid maybe even upper 90s returning to the forecast by the middle part of the week. outside this morning it's kind of chilly. 40s around the north bay. earlier 48 in santa rosa. still chilly start at 49. 52 and mostly clear in livermore now. patchy low clouds around san francisco. highs approaching the mid 60s into the san say. we have mainly clear skies now. 56 degrees. highs today approaching the low 80s. hour by hour the forecast cro crossing past 80 probably around mid afternoon. south of downtown san jose mid

80s in the forecast. even if the sea breeze is out there. maybe not as strong as it's been over the last few days. we see the marine air compress down. the high pressure builds in. that's the reason the seven-day forecast will start to climb approaching wednesday. but in the meantime, highs may be slightly below average for another day. low 80s around san jose. mid to upper 60s closer to san francisco. me mid 70s around palo alto. mill valley and tri-valley temperatures in the mid 80s. the reason why temperatures have been mild the last three to four days is the tropical pressure keeping it consistent and cooler air aloft. it's about to be replaced by high pressure building in. if the winds turn offshore and the weather models indicate not just the valleys warming up but even at the coast we could see 70s and 80s. notice the changes here even around san francisco and the coast as we hid toward the

no, this isn't a scene from burning man. i london on fire. not a scene from burning man here. london's way of marking the 350th anniversary of the "great fire." this art installation took two months to build but only two minutes to burn down yesterday. firefighters were nearby in the event that performance burned out of control. catholic church right now has an all new icon. yesterday pope francis canonized, now saint theresa. more than 120,000 people were there for the ceremony. despite the fact there were 13

heads of state and government officials attending that ceremony, the very front seats were saved for 1500 poor and homeless men and women from all over italy. at the end of the ceremony, pope francis said it is going to be difficult to remember to call her saint theresa because we've known her as mother theresa for such a long time. >> mother theresa helped me a lot. when the concept of love. love for the poorest of the poor. >> she's an amazing woman. i think it was important this day has finally come for a lot of people. >> saint theresa won the nobel peace prize in 1979 for her work with indians destitute and ill which continued even after she herself became sick. catholics in the bay area also celebrating saint theresa as well. in san jose parishioners gathered at our lady of love to celebrate the life and saint

to begins this weekend. the panda's second pair of twins are cubs. they're the sixth and seventh giant pandas born at the zoo. the public able to meet the cubs as early as december or january. this is great news for giant pandas. they are no longer on the endangereds list. they have been upgraded category "vulnerable" after they were endangered for more than 20 years. i like them when they have fur. >> the momma pandas wish they could stay cubs forever. it's not just labor day today. it's another reason to celebrate pizza lovers, certainly are, anyway. it's national cheese pizza day. not to be confused with national pizza day, which falls in july. these are two separate holidays. the department of agriculture had too much time on its hands, i think. this study might prove that. according to the agency about one in eight americans consume

thieves cho hit up a fremont dealership overnight. that's the beginning of the story. "today in the bay" joining us live from fremont. there are quite a few different police agencies on the case this morning. >> reporter: good morning, guys. there are a number police agencies, chp, fremont, and hayward police taking part in the investigation. it started with cars stolen from a car dealership in fremont. it lead to a car wreck on 880 north. get to the video we have. according to chp around 4:30 there was a suspect driving a stolen car. they got in a wreck on the freeway way. the person was extra candidated from the car and had minor injuries. that suspect fled the scene. here is chp explaining what happened next. >> it sounds like from parties here and witnesses that party then fled scene on foot and may have gotten into a vehicle being

driven by a friend, which is also stolen. we're investigating could be a stolen vehicle. it could be from a same dealership. i don't have the information now. the suspect got in a stolen lexus. now authorities have one suspect in custody at this time. there was no active search for any other suspects. live in fremont, "today in the bay." also breaking overnight a 14-year-old boy is recovering after he was hit by a car in oakley. police say the boy was riding his bike after spending the day fishing with friend and swerved to pass some pedestrians on the sidewalk. that's when he was hit by a pickup truck. the driver of the truck stopped after the crash and is cooperating with the investigation. right now we don't know what the boy's conditions are. an alert this morning in the south bay san jose police now looking for a 56-year-old man after a very close call. a couple of calls.

he tried to kidnap two girls. >> today in the bay's bob redell is live this morning. the suspect that police are looking for, they already know him. he's a convicted sex offender. >> reporter: he is. he has at least two prior convictions, according to the me gus law website. his name is david lee russell. this is what he looks like. this is a picture of him. he's 56 years old. according to police, here in san jose, he tried to kidnap two young girls within this area over the past week. the first attempt allegedly happened monday. this is a week ago at the intersection of hamilton and meridian. the second attempt allegedly thursday at hillsdale and highway 87. that's not far from the silicon valley career education center. both of these alleged attempts happened around 5:00 in the evening. both instances the girls were able to get from rustle. >> this is the first i've heard about it, and i can't believe that it happened here.

officers say the driver of a silver mercedes struck two cars on the freeway and got out on the freeway and started running. and then opened fire at another vehicle on the off ramp. now no one was struck by any bullets, but two people were injured in the crash. the gunman is still on the loose. after days of speculation, nbc confirmed that former stanford swimmer and convicted sex offender brock turner is back home in ohio. this video shows turner in the backyard of his parents' home near dayton. turner was released from the draft clara main jail on friday, which we brought you as breaking news, at that time turner served three months of a six-month sentence for sexually assaulting an unconscious woman. that case then drew national headlines because of what many saw was a lenient sentence related to privilege. some of turner's ohio neighbors are asking people to move on. >> i mean, she's even come to terms with it. in her own statement she agreed

she come to terms with it. the best anybody can do at this point is let anybody live their lives. i think you should leave these people -- >> under publish pressure the judge who sentenced turner stopped hearing criminal cases at his own request. and right now there is a bill on the governor's desk that closes the loophole which lead to turner's sentencing. the lobby of a jail in downtown fresno back open this morning after a shooting in that lobby. this weekend two correctional officers were shot inside the lobby on saturday. both of whom remain in critical condition. the fresno county sheriff's department said it's reviewing what happened and considering making security changes. right now correctional officers guarding the facility aren't armed, but visitors do go through metal detectors to get access to secure areas. the suspect who served time for child rape is in custody right now. he surrendered immediately after the shooting. people are being warned to be extra careful out on the water. already there have been a few

close calls and rescues in the san francisco bay. two tourists spotted a man in the water off aquatic bay, aquatic park in san francisco yesterday. that man was face down wearing a life jacket. one of the tourists was a life guard. he jumped in trying to keep the man afloat until help arrived. the victim was rushed to the hospital in critical condition. the second rescue was also at aquatic park. it was within 24 hours of that emergency. on saturday you see a group of sea scouts were thrown into the water when their boat capsized. believe it or not, no one was hurt. dangerous weekend in the waters. also on the roadways. the chp is in full force this holiday weekend to crack down on drunk drivers. so far there have been more than 730 dui arrests statewide and ten deaths. california is on pace to surpass last year's statewide totals. local police departments are beefing up the staff. >> you encourage people to have

fun. if you choose to drink and are getting bhienld the wheel of the car, think about it. you have many alternate options to get home. taxi, uber, lyft. make a smart decision. >> there have been several dui check points across the area. in addition to the crack downs on the freeways, that's going to continue through the end of the holiday. authorities identified the teen who was killed in the deadly car crash in the east bay isaiah in union city. it happened saturday morning on interstate 880. the teen was driver of the honda accord you see in the video. both cars were traveling southbound and crashed near the west "a" street off ramp. police are investigating and whether alcohol was a factor. many people showing good faith in colin kaepernick. typically he plays on sunday,

but yesterday church goers wanted to hear what the quarterback had to say. the 49ers quarterback was supposed to speak about racism. he was scheduled to, and also his own silent protest at san francisco's third baptist church. he ended up being a no show. some of whom were wearing niners football jerseys. they wanted to hear about his explanation about national anthem protest that garnered credible amounts of coverage. the reverend told the congregation that colin kaepernick wasn't coming, quote, because of the rigorous training." willie brown along with the head of the naacp vowed continue support for colin kaepernick's protest to raise awareness of racial mistreatment by police. >> the young man took a courageous act to bring attention to the situations in america. he did so potentially at a great sacrifice. as always, the black church should have his back.

wednesday, rather than ending on tuesday, as originally reported. >> meanwhile, people on board cruise ships this weekend are feeling hermine's wrath. can you imagine looking at that on your topical vacation? traveling back from a trip to the bahamas the carnival pride crew brought the ship to port several hours early on saturday. on ships charting the atlantic ocean, crews are working to keep the water out and people safe on those slippery decks. >> if you get motion sickness to begin with, take extra dramamine. rob, you've been tracking hermine. it's gone through so many stages. >> yeah. from a true tropical storm and hurricane by nature to a post tropic tropical cyclone. the storm stalled off a little bit offshore than earlier projected. wind and big surf and beach erosion on the east coast. you can see the heavy rain bands are staying offshore.

171 bridges across california need to be retrofitted to width stand the next big quake. more than 3,000 bridges have been upgraded over the last 30 years. the state said some of the bridges need to be upgraded again because of new earthquake standards and wear and tear. it's an expensive undertaking and we discovered it's what the government can't totally afford now. 35 bridges across the state will get those fixes over the next four years. more than 600,000 commuters travel those bridges each day. the california department of transportation considers those improvements necessary, it says you should feel safe driving across bridges now even before the upgrade are in place. if you have a story for us, call us our tip line or send an
