little chilly out there. >> it is. we're seeing temperatures this holiday weekend about 5 to 10 degrees across the valley. not much change in the forecast, at least for the day. you have clear skies with the mostly clear skies now. san jose patches of low clouds. 47 degrees to start the morning off in the north bay. recovering in the low 80s this afternoon. mid 80s around the tri-valley. low around the south bay today. we're talking about 90s in the forecast for the valley. 70 around san francisco. we'll have a look at the seven-day forecast in a few minutes. >> thank you, rob. breaking news spanning several bay area cities. car thieves are to for a series of crashes that shut down a busy freeway through the east bay overnight. >> pete is joining us live with what authorities are telling us as what started out as stolen cars, pete. >> reporter: yeah, good morning. a stolen car from a dealership here in fremont. we have some of the video to show what happened. according to chp they're saying

a suspect initially was chased away by a security guard at one of these car dealerships stealing a car before causing a collision on 880 north. a third car struck that car collision and rolled over. the person rolled over was extra candidated from the car with minor injuries. the suspect was able to get away momentarily. here is chp explaining what happened next. >> it sounds like from parties and witnesses that that party fled the scene on foot and may have gotten in to a vehicle being driven by a friend, which was also stolen. we're investigating could be separate stolen vehicles. could be from the same dealership. i don't have that information now. >> reporter: the suspect did jump into another stolen vehicle, a lexus, and then that car crashed near tenson road. chp, hayward, and fremont pd on

the investigation. they have one suspect in custody. "today in the bay." >> more breaking news now. a 14-year-old is recovering after he was hit by a car in oakley. police say the boy was riding his bike after spending the day fishing. he was on the sidewalk but swerved to pass a pedestrian who was also on the sidewalk. that's when he was hit by a pickup truck. the driver of the truck stopped after the crash and is cooperating with the investigation. we are trying to find out how the boy's condition is this morning. in san jose police right now are on the hunt for a convicted sex offender. they say is extremely dangerous. and reportedly tried to kidnap two young girls. the most recent incident happening only a couple of days ago. for more on the developing story, we turn to today in the bay's bob redell. bob, police know who did it. now they need to find him. >> reporter: and they are actively searching for him.

good morning to you, sam. this man's name is lee russell. according to the megalaw website has two convictions for sex offenses. russell is a 56-year-old man, according to, tried to kidnap two young girls over the past week. now the first attempt allegedly happened monday. a week ago today. it was at hamilton and meridian. that intersection here in san jose. the second attempt allegedly happening not far from the silicon valley technical education center. both happening around 5:00 in the evening. in both instances, the girls were fortunately able to get away from ru russ. >> i think that's sad. i drive around at night for my job, and i think that's scary. i'm here delivering an order now. that's scary. that could have been me. >> reporter: san jose police tell us that david lee russell is a transient. he spends a lot of time in the san jose area.

according to the website, his last known permanent address was an apartment on bascom avenue. he was last seen driving a white nissan rogue. a vehicle like what we put an image of on the screen. except for in russell's case. the rogue he's driving doesn't have any license plates according to police here in san jose. reporting live out the police headquarters, bob redell, tod"ty in the bay". thank you. shots fired in the middle of traffic all beginning with a hit and run. and this morning now police want to talk to anyone who might have seen it happen. this was seen around 5:00 yesterday evening on 880 near the high street off ramp. the driver of a silver mercedes struck two cars on the freeway and then that driver got out and started running and opened fire at vehicle on the off ramp. no one was struck by the gunfire, but two people were hurt in the crash, and the gunman is still on the loose.

this labor day people are being warned to be extremely careful on the water. there have a few rescues in the san francisco bay. two tourists spotted a man in the water in aquatic park, basically off of it in san francisco yesterday. that man was face down wearing a life jacket. one of the tourists happened to be a life guard jumped in keeping that man afloat until more help could arrive. the victim was rushed to hospital in critical condition. the rescue was the second aquatic park emergency in 24 hours. on saturday a group of sea scouts were thrown into the water when their boat capsize. nobody was hurt in that incident. just in for the first time president obama is weighing in on colin kaepernick's silent protest of the national anthem, and he did it on an international stage. during a news conference a short time ago following the session at the g-20 summit in china. was asked about the actions of

the 49ers quarterback that colin kaepernick said is raising awareness of racial injustice. in the meantime, colin kaepernick was a no-show for a talk with the san francisco congregation about 200 people, some of them wearing colin kaepernick football jersey wanted to hear the 49er talk about his protest. but the president just weighing in today. >> he's exercising his constitutional right to make a statement, but i don't his sinner sin s sinner is -- sinsincerity. i think he cares about legitimate issues that have to be talked about. if nothing else, he's generated more conversation around the topic that needs to be talked about. >> again, the president making those kmebcomments on an international stage at the g-20 summit. these are the images that created protest that went virav.

in is the congregation in san francisco waiting to hear colin kaepernick speak about his stand on racial injustice and policing. but, again, he was a no-show at that church in san francisco. the church said it hopes to reschedule. colin kaepernick's talk was cancelled because of the rigors of training. on the soccer star megan rap pinot decided to take a knee during the national anthem in seattle last night. it happened as the seattle rains game against the chicago red stars game was about to start. it was an intentional nod to colin kaepernick and everything he stands for now. she added that she can relate, in a way, was she's gay. she helped the u.s. win the world cup last year and also just returned from the rio olympics. with policing community relations at a critical point

hermine continues to twist hundred of miles off the shore in the atlantic, and the weather is clearly very not very good. it's creating dangerous waves and rip currents on the last day of a long holiday weekend. meanwhile, people on board cruise ships this weekend are feeling hermine's wrath. can you imagine looking at that on your topical vacation? traveling back from a trip to the bahamas the carnival pride crew brought the ship to port several hours early on saturday. on ships charting the atlantic ocean, crews are working to keep the water out and people safe on those slippery decks. >> rocky waters out there. not a cruise ship but a tour boat, in this case, once provided tours on the delta and sacramento river has spunk. you're looking at the "spirit of sacramento." the boat started taking on water late saturday night. the 87-foot paddle boat capsized leaking hazardous material into

the water. >> it's hazardous to wildlife. that's why we take it seriously. we need to get it out of the environment. so it's no longer harming the fish and wildlife. >> the boat was leaking a amount of diesel. crews are working to cap the leak. there were two people on board the boat when it started to sink. they were able to get off the boat without any issues regarding injury. >> i hope when someone is up with us on a holiday weekend because they're doing something fun. one of our viewers said somebody's car alarm was going off. isn't that rude? you have the day off and the car alarm. >> and we were seeing a lot of activity around the bay area, maybe this morning car alarms. on the delta very interesting. that story you saw brought to us by one of our viewers messaging on facebook. i want to share the picture cathy sent. that is how it used to look. it was a pretty-good sized ship 87 foot flipping over. that's the stern facing upward there.

hopefully they can clean it up. a pretty fixture in sacramento. they used to do tours, as you saw, sinking yesterday. not a lot of wind around the delta this morning. patchy low clouds in san francisco. 47 chilly degrees to start in the north bay. cool start to the morning. san francisco is not seeing too much fog around the golden gate bridge. highs approaching the mid 60s by this afternoon. 55 degrees highs taking run at the low 80s today. hour by hour you'll see the forecast climbing slightly below average for this time of year. and temperatures set to soar well above average for the middle part of the week. it's not today. sea breeze is strong enough to keep our ocean air-conditioning in check today. but if you're in the north bay, you see hazy skies it could be from wild fire smoke moving from north to south down the coast. moderate air quality levels around the north bay and peninsula. here is the source of the smoke. no real fires around the bay

continue to search. fire officials say it began with a collapse of a multilevel underground parking garage that was under construction. he said that brought down a crane which then caused part of a different building to collapse well. we'll continue to follow this breaking news story and bring updates as soon as we get them. right now following breaking news at home now with an impact by two communities in the east bay. a security guard goes after car thieves who hit a fremont dealership overnight. that just the beginning the story. >> "today in the bay" is live in fremont. there are a lot of police agencies on the case. it spanned quite a distance. >> reporter: good morning. we've seen a number of agencies we have chp, fremont, and hayward police on the investigation. we're getting word that fremont police that. had on a dealership on peralta boulevard. here is video from the scene. according to chp it happened

the reverend amos brown told the congregation that colin kaepernick wasn't coming after all because of, quote, the rigors of training. the church hopes to reschedule colin kaepernick's talk sometime soon. the lobby of a jail in downtown fresno back open this morning after a shooting in that lobby this weekend. two correctional officers were shot inside the lobby on saturday. both of whom remain in critical condition. the fresno county sheriff's department is reviewing what happened and considering making security changes. right now correctional officers guarding the facility are not armed, and visitors have to go through metal detectors to get to secure areas. the suspect in this case, who served time for child rape, is in custody. he surrendered immediately after that shooting. authorities identified the teenager who was killed in a deadly car crash in the east bay. he is isaiah means of union city. this is a look at the collision, which happened around saturday morning on interstate 880 in

hayward. the teen was the driver of the honda accord you see there. both cars were traveling south and crashed near the west "a" street off ramp. authorities are investigating the accident and whether alcohol was a factor. there were many deaths over the holiday weekend, sadly. chp was out in full force cracking down on drunk drivers. so far there have been more than 730 dui arrests statewide, and ten deaths. that's just over the holiday weekend. california is on pace to surpass last year's statewide totals. local police departments are beefing up staff to ensure public safety. >> we encourage people, you know, please have fun this weekend, but also, if you choose to drink and you're getting behind the wheel of a car, really think about it. have many alternate options to get home. either a taxi, uber, lyft, something like that. make a smart decision. >> there have been several dui check points across the bay area so far this long weekend.

in addition to the crack on the freeways that are going to continue through today. the catholic church has a new icon. yesterday pope francis canonized mother theresa of calcutta who died in 2007. >> more than 120,000 people were there in saint peter's square for the ceremony. there were 13 heads of state and governments attending the ceremony. the front seats were given to 1500 poor and homeless men and women from all over italy. pope francis said it's going to be difficult to remember to call her saint theresa because we've known her as "mother theresa" for such a long time. >> mother theresa helped me a lot with the concept of love. love for the poorest of the poor. >> she was an amazing woman. i think it's important that this day has come for a lot of people. >> now known as saint theresa.

for new jersey. h hermine continues to twist hundreds of miles offshore in the atlantic. it's creating dangerous waves and rip currents. on the lost day of the long holiday weekend. people on board cruise ships are feeling hermine's wrath. traveling back from a trip to the bahamas a carnival pride crew brought the ship to port seven hours early. sips still charting the atlantic ocean, crews are working to keep the water out. when the next big earthquake strikes, the bay area you might whether or not whether the bridges will be able to withstand the jolt.

good morning. scientists believe seismic pressure has been building beneath the bay area for decades. so they fear a large-scale earthquake is now inevitable. 171 bridges across california still need to be retrofitted to withstand the next big quake. more than 3,000 bridges have been upgraded over the past 30 years. the state said some of the bridges need to be upgraded again because of new earthquake standards and wear and tear. it's an expensive undertaking as we discovered it's one the government can't totally afford now. it's making the improvements in stages. 35 bridges across the state will get those fixes over the next four years. more than 600,000 commuters travel those bridges each day. the california department of transportation considers those improvements necessary, it says you should feel safe driving across bridges now even before the upgrade are in place.

now. so that's just really scary. that could have been me. >> very scary. police say russell is a transient known to frequent san jose. russell had at least two prior convictions including a assault to commit a sex offense and sexual battery. a 14-year-old recovering after he was bit a car in oakley. police say the boy was riding his bike after spending the day fishing and swerved to pass some pedestrians who were on the sidewalk. that's when he was hit by the pickup truck. the driver of the truck did stop after the crash and is cooperating with the investigation. no word on the boy's condition. shots fired in the middle of traffic, it started with a hit-and-run crash. now this morning police want to talk to anyone who may have seen something. this was the scene at about 5:00 yesterday evening. officers say the driver of a silver mercedes struck two cars on the freeway. the driver got out started

running and opened fire on another vehicle on the offramp. nobody was hit by any bullets. two people were injured in the crash. the gunman is still on the loose. people are being warned to be extra careful on the water this labor day. already there have been a few rescues in the san francisco bay. two tourist s spotted a man off the water of aquatic park yesterday. the man was facedown wearing a life jacket. one of the tourist is a life guard jumped in keeping that man afloat until help arrived. the victim was rushed to the not want to critical condition. the rescue was the second one at aquatic park. on saturday a group of sea scouts were tossed into the water when their boat capsized. no one was hurt in that accident. the the san francisco police officer's association made its choice to be the city's next top cop. they want interim chief tony chaplin to continue as the permanent chief. the president of the poa said
