apple set to make a big announcement this morning in anticipation is growing. live with team coverage of what could be unveiled. "today in the bay" starts right now. all quiet there now but we're on our way to help you welcome your wednesday morning. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. we talk about being out in san francisco for the big apple event. this might have sounded crazy before but a little spray fan for the people out there. >> now a lot of air conditioning in the more historic areas. >> after that. >> might be one of those. temperatures later on today. climbing close to 80 in san francisco. nice and comfortable right now. 60s in the south bay. boy, look at the tri-valley today. into the north bay right now. east bay temperatures might be the hottest in the afternoon. one of the busier spots so far for your morning commute, mike. >> a couple of incidents in the east bay. show you in a second. the first one we we talked about

at 880 and broadway cleared this disabled pickup truck. zoom in over here. counter what commute we do have eastbound. that's one of your zoo exit there's. a deer was hit in the roadway from what i understand. not one of the animals from the zoo. it does sound like it's one of those roaming around in the hills. chp has to help with that situation. midday we do have a game at the coliseum. back to you. mike, thank you very much. a man shot dead in a busy part of the peninsula. this morning we're learning more about a chaotic crime scene that unfolded in the hills day shopping center. >> the chase to find the shooter spans civil cities. >> good morning, laura and sam. it did span many cities shopping center and ended in san francisco. i want to get to some of this new video we got as we showed up here. three cars were being towed

away. that's what san mateo tells us. they say this is connected to the investigation. and according to san mateo pd they said the shooting took place in this parking lot where we're standing around 7:00 p.m. last night on the 3500 block of el camino real in this parking lot. mostly used by folks who live in the nearby apartment complexes. now, when police arrive they found a 31-year-old man shot multiple times and when medical aid was given it was a little bit too late. that victim dying at the scene. now, the high speed car chase of the suspects went from san mateo to 92 westbound up to 80 to 101 northbound. eventually ending in san francisco. >> actually there was not a lot of traffic. didn't create a danger. given the nature of what they were doing it was necessary to do what they could. we're grateful, they did yield at the scene of the stop and we got them in custody. >> reporter: san mateo pd says this appears to be an isolated incident. are investigating what led to this shooting. if you have any information that can help out with this case,

contact san mateo pd. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> pete, thank you very much iffen on the other side of the bay. breaking news. the search is on for a man and woman involved in a high speed chase. that is the aftermath. the pair were trying to evade police on oakland city streets. they went the wrong way on a 580 off-ramp and collided head-on with a chp cruiser that was coming off that ramp trying to join the pursuit. the suspects jumped out of the car and escaped. more specifically, they scramled out and then jumped more than 20 feet off of the ramp and ran away. officers initially tried to stop the car when they noticed that it had blacked out windows. oakland police believe they have an idea of who the people are and are going to pursue more leads this morning. one officer was injured in the crash but suffered minor injuries. fire investigators are at palo alto's iconic glass slipper inn in morning. officials are trying to figure out what us caused the fire at the inn at el a anyone no real.

it started about 9:00 last night. firefighters were able to knock down the flames pretty quickly. about 20 guests are without a place to stay, however, due to the damage caused by the fire. techie's version of christmas eve. just a few hours away from an apple event where it's expected to unveil new product or improvements on existing ones. maybe one of them the iphone 7. a live look right now at the bill graham civic center where the announcement will be made later this morning. the biggest speculation that the point seems to be over audio. traditionally apple ships phones with ear buds but there are indications the new iphone is going to go wireless. that would mean no headphone jack. there's also speculation that the new phone could be water resistant. as always, injure going to have to be patient. consumers might have to wait a few weeks before orders are shipped. >> i love the product. i hope it's interesting. if it's interesting i'm going to get my wife and mine a new one. my kids are going to be upset but that's how it rolls. >> get one for the kids.

sandwich and of course, you know, the guest was not having that. >> the manager says miller was escorted out. three hours later miller was in handcuffs accused of hitting two hotel guests include that 70-year-old who i mentioned reportedly suffering a broken bone in his face. laura, this morning a lot of relief in the south bay after san jose police say they've caught the man wanted for assaulting and trying to kidnap two women in just the past couple of weeks. 56-year-old sex offender david lee russell was finally taken into custody yesterday near oakland road and charles street following a slew of tips from the public. police say that russell's first attack happened ten days ago near meridian and hamilton. the second one came last week. police credit the many tips from the public for russell's arrest. >> this is an example of the community working together with the police. how we quickly and efficiently take somebody off the streets, especially someone as dangerous as this guy that we're looking

for. >> russell, a convicted sex offender, is described as a transient. he's being held at the santa clara county jail. breaking news out of vallejo where police say an early morning standoff has led to the arrest of a suspect in the kilting of a pregnant teenager. this was the scene from a short time ago at an apartment complex. on monday night 18-year-old ilaysia mccoy was killed in san pablo in that area of 17th street near rumold boulevard. they took a 21-year-old man into custody in connection with the homicide. we will bring you more information as soon as it soms into our newsroom. dozens of cats abandabandon. and the people who did it may have done this before. a security camera at the marin humane society captured three people in a blue vehicle dropping off box after box of kittens early sunday morning. they rang the buzzer after h hours and they took off.

34 cats were inside. this isn't the first time boxes of cats have been left in novato. they believe the same group has made five drop-offs in four years leaving 130 cats to be cared for. >> this could have been avoied. spay or neuter could have avoided that. make sure all the cats are healthy but also spay/neuter so this doesn't happen again. >> letter of apology says, quote, a friend's great grandmother had too many babies. a long letter there. it will cost about $500 to prepare each kitten for adoption but i think they're waiving some of those fees just to kind of get these cats. >> animal crisis at this point. annual clear the shelters event. >> clear the cats. >> clear the cats. 5:08. et cetera will get let's get a check of your weather forecast. >> hopefully clear the skies or the air quality issues we're seeing today. unfortunately a "spare the air"

good morning, tracie. >> some of those topics include how do you keep this country safe, how do you defeat isis, how do you build up our military? donald trump previewing so of that in his philadelphia speech this morning. if numbers are any indication, this could end up being a friendly crowd for him. our nbc survey monkey poll found him ahead by 19 points among members of the military and retirees. a coin toss determines donald trump gets the last word in tonight's commander chief forum, one day after dozen of retired military chiefs endorsed him. >> 898 generals and admirals endorsed donald trump today. and these are the fighters, these are if fighters. >> compare where trump is with where both romney and mccain were. they had between 300 and 500. i'm doing better than any democrat. he's doing worse than recent

republicans. >> reporter: but democrats are worried. clinton's six points ahead in nbc's poll, same as last week, but two points behind in cnn's. >> worried democrats would like to see hillary clinton out there every day not just tearing down donald trump but selling herself to the american peek. >> reporter: before another military audience tuesday, trump switched topics several times, asked about syria's leader, he shifted to iran's nuclear deal. >> double up your sanctions. you could have really negotiated a deal. >> reporter: each side disparaging the other. >> she can't be president. she can't sheb anything. >> he has no clue about what he's talking about. >> reporter: as this race tightens. and as this race tightens and support about and from the military becomes more important, donald trump saying he's got dozens of retired generals supporting him. this morning, hillary clinton released her list. she says she's got 95 to his 88. so it seems that there is a war of numbers going on between them on who's got the most support

from military leaders. back to you. >> sounds like they're keeping score. tracie potts live from d.c. we have programming to changes because of tonight's commander in chief forum. nbc bay area news is airing at a special time, 4:00 p.m. followed by "nightly news with lester holt" at 4:30, and then that forum moderated by matt lauer at 5:00, once again at 8:00 p.m. mineta san jose international airport is looking for cash to beef up security. the airport is applying for federal grant money to buy new technology that includes smart cameras that can track cars, people, and planes. the airport is also upgrading its fences which have been raised to 11 feet in certain areas to cut down on security breaches. >> san jose airport did have a number of incidents if the past two years where we realized that we needed to increase our fence line in order to deter individuals from trying to scale our fence line. >> the new fences are three feet

above what they used to be. more las vegas chatter for the raiders. today could enup being a very notable one. southern nevada tourism committee is meeting with officials this afternoon about $1.9 billion stadium project right off the vegas strip. they're expected to get into the financing details for the stadium into the nitty-gritty, if you will. which would also be used by the unlv football team. raiders owner mark davis says the franchise will contribute $500 million to that project. if all sides come to an agreement the new stadium would be recommended to the governor of nevada. apple is announcing we think its latest iphone today. >> scott mcgrew says apple has a big advantage. >> a big advantage, advantage of low expectations. tech world is not expecting a, the on from apple today. we'll get to the particulars later in the newscast. but here's a live picture for you outside the event in san francisco. special event, it says. it starts at 10:00 this morning. these iphone announcements each

september have become part of american culture. but this time around the press not expecting much. iphone surprises a rare, stays "wall street journal." the glow fades the headline in the "new york times" this morning. to be fair, apple has created such a great product it's having trouble making it better. iphones account for two thirds of apple's products. it's locked in the battle for samsung for phone supremacy. samsung meanwhile has had several missteps. battery on the galaxy note 7 forcing a recall and now samsung telling bloomberg this morning some of its products are stuck on ships. hanjin ships waiting you side american ports is the shipping company navigates the bankruptcy. again, we'll have full coverage of this throughout the morning. for the rest of the news before the bell let's check in with landon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, landon. >> hi, scott. good morning. wall street will build on tuesday's gains. futures are mixed. and the markets are going to be positive with the nasdaq closing

at a record level despite a report showing the weakest riding on the nation's services sector in six years. investor are digesting friday's jobs report that traders suggest will keep the fed from hiking interest rates thmonths. the nasdaq up 26 to 5275. scott, back over to you. sam and laura, something really cool happened out in the middle of the ocean on tuesday. one of those little robot sail boats, the wave glider, hade here in the bay area. found and tracked a trans oceanic flight, a swiss airliner flying above it. here's the map. tiny robot boat tracking a flight north of iceland. the first time a bay early quid robotics team has ever done this. the point here is they're a huge stretch of the ocean where there's no radar coverage. we know this because we can't see their path. and that's why the malaysian air flight was so able to disappear. if we can have these tiny -- and they're just tiny little robot boats out there, they can actually communicate with the

airplanes and we can track them if they go. >> that would be interesting. >> they pulled it off yesterday. >> that's good. i wonder if they can survive in a way of some of the currents and what not out there as well. >> they can self steer. yes, they can start putting them across the ocean and we should be able to track airplanes out in the middle of vast oceans. >> could solve some mystery. >> could be revolutionary. rocky waters outside in general with everything going on. >> in fact, look at this. we've got hurricane newton to show you this morning. drenching los cabos. this morning that storm is headed towards the u.s. border. the storm slammed into los cabos on the southern tip of mexico's baja california peninsula. it knocked out powers, stranded tourists and grounded flights. some flight, in fact, between san jose and cabo were canceled. headed towards the u.s. border with potentially dangerous rains for arizona and mexico. a check of weather and traffic right now. rob has been following newton and the impact for california is relatively minimal but other

states effected. >> the high just off to our west is blocking the path of that storm. it's curving around high pressure in west texas and moving into southern arizona. not a hurricane anymore. winds sustaineded at only 60 miles per hour. crossing over the state of senora in mexico and a lot of mountains. take the tropical systems off their warm water feel environment and put them over the mountains and you see the storm begin to weaken rapidly but it still has a tremendous amount of moisture to pour into arizona. could crossover into tucson as weak tropical storm. look at those rain totals. maybe as much as four inches of rain in southeastern arizona. but as you saw, all that action staying off to the east of california. now this morning we've got 50s and 60s outside. san francisco, very interesting part of our weather story. we're expecting a high of close to 80 later on today after a start at 58 degrees. and those warm days have been

few and far between. average highs 70 degrees. only yesterday in july 26th have we been above 75 degrees for the second half of summer. and only three days at 70 or higher. obviously we will break that today. winds out at north during the day. today we will help bring in more smoke pollution in the bay area like we saw yesterday. today in addition to the heat is a "spare the air" day both for ground level ozone and smoke at times. check out the temperatures in the low to mid 90s south of downtown san jose. close to 80 in san francisco. hottest spots around the bay area today. climbing into the upper 90s. around the tri-valley. now to see what's happening with your morning commute around the tri-valley, here's mike. >> we had to go to the tri-valley to find those sensors. anything but green. look at that map. we will go over as you expect it's basically right here coming down ysabel heading down towards where it merges. and then cut through over towards 680 just fine. no problems. but that is your commute direction right behind my head. a little slowing off 205 and the altamont.

president obama touring a retabl tags in laos today. it treats survivors of bombs the u.s. once dropped on that crown country during the vietnam war. president obama says acknowledging the history of war and how it's experience bid ordinary people is a way that we make future wars less likely, quote/unquote. the president toured a buddhist temple and held a town hall for that people in that country. it doesn't matter what age, race, or religion, time is top of the list in problems in america. that's why hundreds of people gathered in oakland to address the problem by boeiw ing their heads in prayer. people from all faiths to the at the cathedral in oakland last night. they believe prayer will at least keep the dialogue moving when it comes to stopping the violence. >> fighting crime takes more than prayers. but the unity of the communities to build a peaceful future

absolutely is an important contributing factor. >> organizers of the summit hope oakland will host that event again next year. the search for new police chief in san francisco taking another step forward today. so far the city's received 60 applications for that job. and today a recruiter is going to give a presentation on the search as well as feedback on what people are looking for in a chief. next week applications will be reviewed. three candidates will be sent to mayor ed lee who will make the final decisions. among those hoping to get the job is interim chief toney chapl chaplin. chaplin took over for greg sir who stepped down over controversy. breaking news in the deadly shooting of a pregnant woman, seven months pregnant when she was gunned down. an arrest made early this morning. we'll have the very latest from the scene. chaotic crime secene outsid

and a good morning. happy you're joining us in the halfway point of your workweek on this wednesday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. let's get right to that forecast with rob. warmer this morning. >> we'll see some spots in the 80s by probably 10:00 this morning as we go through the morning. right now, comfortable outside. 50s and 60s. approaching the afternoon, a few spots in the upper 90s. there you see 61 in san jose. 58 in san francisco. show you how san francisco today closing in on 80 degrees. san jose, tri-valley, in the low 90s. a lot of folks may be heading across the bay bridge to escape the heat. that's one of the busy spots for the morning drive. >> so the commute heating up at the bay bridge. no real surprises around the bay. look at this. there you see a little blip starting to form as people hit the road. just over a antioch ridge we have a crash. it's not across that antioch span. stall at berkeley off the freeway. it will slow you a bit. the backup forming here as metering lights turn on right on

schedule. back to you chl. we do have breaking news where police say early morning standoff led to the arrest of a 21-year-old in the killing of a pregnant teenager. this was the scene from a short time ago in an apartment complex on via vista street. on monday night 18-year-old ilaysia mccoy who was. seven months pregnant was shot and killed in san pablo. according to the family's gofundme page the baby shower was supposed to be this sunday. investigators took a 21-year-old man into custody. violence near a popular mall on the peninsula where a man is shot and killed but that was just the start. a wild scene specifically a pursuit playing out across several counties. "today in the bay's" pete suratos is joining us live from san mateo where that shooting happened. pete, we know that police have several people now in custody but this took a little while. >> reporter: good morning, sam.

they have two suspects in custody cording to san mateo pd but it started off here in san mateo and was a high speed car chase that ended in san francisco. want to show you new video. they were three cars being tow aid way when we showed up an hour ago. san mateo police say that was connected to this shooting. according to san mateo pd the deadly shooting took place around 7:00 p.m. on the 3500 block of el camino real in this parking lot. mostly used by folks in the nearby apartment complexes. when police arrived they found a 31-year-old man shot multiple times. that victim dying at the scene. high speed car chase i just mentioned for the suspects went from san mateo to 92 westbound up 280 eventually ending in san francisco. now, here's police talking more about this chase. >> our officers went down hillsdaling loo for a suspect vehicle. they picked him up at hillsdale and 101.

crash and suffered minor injuries. the manhunt to find a man suspected of trying to kidnap two women in south san jose comes to an end. as we stress the importance of reporting what you see, police say they have the public to thank. >> "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live in san jose with what led up to the arrest. sounds like he even changed his identity, kris. >> reporter: well, laura, i can tell you that that wanted sex offender's picture was shared 400 times plus just from the nbc bay area facebook page. never mind the other social media platforms like instagram and twitter and all of the other news agencies also reportering that. and because of all of those eyes that were looking for david lee russell, police were able to track him down yesterday morning he did try to change his identity. shaved and tipped his car. driving something different but people still recognized him. police arrested him in the area of oakland road and charles avenue in san jose. about eight miles from willow

glen where police say he tried to incapacitate a young woman who fought him off a week ago yesterday and ten miles from hillsdale where police say a different young woman fought him off last friday. russell was unsuccessful in both of those alleged kidnapping attempts and the public seem to want to keep it that way. >> i shared the story on facebook. shared the story on my instagram. and i had a lot of family members and friends reach out to me. >> this is an example of the community working to the with a police. we quickly and efficiently take somebody off the streets. >> reporter: david lee russell was arrested on two counts of attempted kidnapping with the intent to commit a sexual event, two counts of assault to commit a felony, and outstanding warrant for driving under the influence. he also has at least two prior felony sexual assault convictions according to the database. russell is off the streets for now but he is due in court to face these charges on september 20th.

in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you very much. we are getting new details about threats made against sunnyvale high school students and one group that was singled out in particular, jewish students. investigators say 17-year-old admits to making a threat on instagram targeting about 50 jewish students. police say the teen referenced columbine in this instagram account, even attaching a photo of the mass shooting. >> i was surprised because we're a diverse population at fremont and i didn't think any jews would be op pressed like this. >> i was actually very, very happy to hear the administration was proactive. i commend the fact that law enforcement took it seriously. in today's day and age, you know, we can't dismiss hate speech. >> the law enforcement response was swift as well. the teen who made that threat was arrested on suspicion of a hate crime and making criminal threats. it is 5:36. man accuse of start that destructive fire in lake county will be in court for a plea

hearing today. damien pashilk is accused of setting several fires. he's expected at the lake county superior court this morning. investigators say they have surveillance footage that puts pashilk near several fires prks clayton fire in lake county destroyed nearly 200 homes and other structures. video proof of something many san francisco cans have experienced. police are looking for the man you see on the surveillance video breaking into a car. you watch him walk up to the suv, see him climb into the window there. he grabs a backpack and takes off. 200 block of avila street in san francisco. all of the way back on august 6th. if you have any information, call sfpd. getting off to a warmer start today. summer is just kind of hanging on out there. rob is in for kari today. >> yeah, spots including san jose in the south bay forecast right now in the 60s to start. high temperatures approaching the 90s today with just patches of low clouds out on the coast.
