easier drive north 101 at 680. over here the try vap ly. down toward fremont and nimitz freeway. bay bridge toll plaza hz a backup. past the coliseum up a good amount of traffic. nimitz northbound. southbound with the headlights. neither side with any surprises. breaking news where police say an early morning standoff has led to the arrest of a 21-year-old man in connection to the killing of a pregnant teenager. this was the seen a couple of hours ago. luis morales jr. was taken into custody after a standoff with police. on monday night 18-year-old ilaysia mccoy, seven months pregnant, was shot and killed in san pablo. according to the family's gofundme page mccoy's baby shower was supposed to be this sunday. another story we're following overnight. fire investigators are at palo alto's iconic glass slipper inn

this morning. this is new video from the scene after the flames have been extinguished. officials are trying to figure out what caused the fire at tin on el camino real. it started ant 9:00 last night on the second floor. firefighters were able to knock the flames down quickly but 20 guests were displaced without a place to stay due to all the damage caused by the fire. happening now, apple gearing up for its big announcement today in san francisco. we're live at the bill graham civic auditorium where the announcement will be made. exeperts and faps are expectinga new iphone and updated smartwatch. speculating, we're going to know soon enough of what apple is up to. we'll have live team coverage with scott mcgrew and bob redell on apple's announcement in ten minutes. first though, in san mateo. two people are finally under arrest. one man is dead after a shooting near one of the peninsula's most popular shopping malls. >> pete suratos is live on the

scene. pete, the chase to find the shooters spanned several cities. >> good morning. that high speed car chase involving the suspects ended in san francisco, started in san mateo. i want to give you an idea of where the shooting took place. we're in this parking lot not too far from the hillsdale shopping mall. police said it happened in the open near apartment complexes right under that light pole. not too long ago, about an hour ago, we could get you that video. there were a fewer cass being towed away that police tell me were connected to the shooting. according to pd they say the shooting took place around 7:00 p.m. on the 3500 block of el camino real in this parking lot they just showed you, which is primarily used by residents living in these nearby apartment complexes. when police arrived they found a 31-year-old man shot several times who died at the scene and police are still investigating what led to this shooting. back to that high speed car chase of the suspects it went from san mateo to 92 westbound

up 280 to 101 northbound, eventually ending in san francisco. >> there was not a lot of traffic. didn't create a danger. given the nature of what they were doing it was necessary to do what they could. we're grateful it ended the way that it did. at the scene of the stop and got him in custody. >> reporter: the san mateo police says this appears to be an isolated incident. this is still an on going investigation. if you have any information that can help out with this case, contact san mateo pd. live in san mateo, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, pete. breaking news we continue to follow in the east bay. the search is on for a man and woman involved in a high speed chase through oakland. the pair took off during a routine traffic stop, then went the wrong way on a 580 off-ramp, colliding head-on with a chp cruiser trying to join the pursuit. the two scrambled out of the car and jumped more than 20 feet off the ramp then ran away. oakland police believe they have an idea who the people are.

one aofficer suffered minor injuries in the crash. proof that public help matters. san jose police say they caught the man wanted for assaulting and trying to kidnap two women in the past couple weeks. 56-year-old sex offender david lee russell was taken into custody yesterday near oakland road and charles street following a slew of tips fro vid by the public. police say that russell's first attack happened ten days ago near meridian and hamilton, second one last week near hillsdale and highway 87. police are crediting the tips from the public for making this arrest. >> this is an example of the community working together with the police. we quickly and efficiently take somebody off the streets. especially someone as dang rouz as this guy that we're looking for. >> russell a convicted sex ander is described as a transient. he's being held at the santa clara county jail. congresswoman jacqui spears introducing new legislation to

help stop sexual assault. speier will introduce the bill in a couple of hours. it improves accountability and transparen transparency. speier pushed this following the controversial stanford rape case. the man accused of starting the fire in lake county is going to be in court for a plea hearing today. damon pashilk is accused of setting several fires. he's expected at the lake county skup your court building this morning. investigators say they have surveillance footage that puts pashilk near several fires with we have new details of the arrest of former 49er bruce miller. he had other run-ins before the hotel fight that got him arrested most recently. police released this booking photo, you can see the deep gash on his forehead there. a gash his agent said required multiple stitches. the former 49ers accused of beating a 70-year-old man and his son at the hotel. but hours earlier the manager at

a restaurant tommy's joint on van ness said miller stumbled in saying he was hungry and didn't have any money. >> things got a little bit heated. he tried to take someone's sandwich, and of course you know, the guest was not having that. >> the manager says miller was then escorted out. but three hours later, miller was back in handcuffs accuse of hitting two hotel guests include that 70-year-old man who reportedly suffered broken bones in his face. it is 6:07. today could be a critical day in the raiders possible move no las vegas. southern nevada tourism committee is meeting with city officials about the $1.9 billion stadium project right off the strip. they are expected to get into the financial details of the stadium used by the unlv football team as well. raiders owner mark davis says the franchise will contribute $500 million to that project. if all sides come to an agreement, the new stadium will be recommended to the governor

winds. ground level ozone and smoke pollution in the bay. south bay coincidentally we will see the hottest temperatures in the forecast. mid 90s in downtown san jose. 80 degree mark by early afternoon. tri-valley today, numbers as hot as the upper 90s. but cooling relief begins tomorrow as the sea breeze tries to make a comeback at a temperatures closer to average as you approach the weekend. to see if your morning commute is shaping up average in hayward. >> we're going to encourage that sea breeze to come in and cool that down. looking at the rest of the bay. starting to heat up for the morning commute. the south bay we'll see you start to slow down through san jose and northbound routes. but right now seeing southbound 680 and southbound 580 with your typical pattern. tri-valley and over here from the nimitz, hayward down to union city and including these folks heading across san mateo bridge. live look shows you 92 westbound. standard pattern. flat section. eastbound looks like a good volume with no slowing on the

a new twist in a 20-year old cold-case. today - the fbi will start excavating an area near cal there's a new twist in a 20-year-old cold case. today the fbi will start excavating an area near cal poly in san luis op business po. christian smart disappeared in 1996. she was just 19 years old at the time. about two dozen fbi agents and sheriff deputys will start digging on a hillside by the campus. they were led to that area by specially trained detection dogs. the dig is expected to last about four days and cover an a area of 90 feet. we are getting new details about threats made against the

sunnyvale high school students. one group in particular was singled out, jewish students. investigators say a 17-year-old admits to making a threat on instagram targeting roughly 50 jewish students at the school. police say the teen referenced columbine in an instagram account profile and even attached a photo of the mass shooting. >> i was surprised because we're diverse population at fremont and i didn't think any jews would be oppressed like this. >> i was very, very happy to hear that the administration was very proactive. i commend the fact that law enforcement took it seriously. in today's day and age, you know, we can't dismiss hate speech. >> if teen who made the threat was arrested for hate crime and for making criminal threats. 6:14. anticipation is mounting as we're just under four hours away from happapple's big reveal.

good-bye to the headphone jack perhaps. >> we have team coverage. scott mcgrew will be joining us in just a minute but we kick things off with bob rel dell live in san francisco with a spec speculatiulation is swirli. laura mentioned the end of headphone jacks. bob, what else are you hearing? >> we're talking about a new iphone 7. that's the rumor at which would not be a radical redesign of the iphone 6 plus. we still have the same 56 1/2-inch size video screen. 4.7 inch if you're talking about the nonplus model. but we'll know for sure if just over a few hours at 10:00 when apple will be launching their, quote, special event here at the bill graham civic auditorium. on stage will be ceo tim cook delivering the key note. as we've seen in years past, running through new features that are expected on their products as we're talking about we're expecting the mention of the iphone 7. one of the most rumored changes, this is according to bloomburg

news which is what you and laura were alluding to, sam, the removal of the headphone jack to have more space inside the phone for a faster processor or improved battery capacity. this means the new headphones would have to be wearless or plug into the existen light anyone power port. there's also talk of rumor of a dual lens camera on the plus model. that would be two lens to allow for better photography and low light conditions, something we're used to working overnight on the morning show. another rumor, according to cnbc, the iphone 7 would be waterproof or at least water resistant. and thin with regards to the apple watch, there's talk that there could be a gps chip, a faster processor, and better battery life. again, we'll know for sure in about 3 1/2 hours at 10:00 a.m., a little bit over 3 1/2 hours when tim cook will take to the stage here at the bill graham civic auditorium. i want to send it over to scott mcgrew.

scott and i were talking about this. apple has a strange problem, i don't know if it's a good problem, strange one for sure because they're at a point where it's hard to improve on the products that many people find very popular and wonderful as it is. >> that's right. good morning, bob. luxury of low expectations, right? you look through the morning papers. you see we're not expecting much in the press. iphone surprises are rare, says the "wall street journal." the glow fades is the headline in the "new york times." but you're right. it's because the iphone has gotten so good it's difficult to find improvements for it. iphones are still incredibly important to apple. they account for two-thirds of the company's revenue. and apple has another thing going for it this morning, missteps by archrival samsung. apple's fought samsung in court, fought them in the markets. and the problems with the battery on its galaxy note 7 for samsung force adderall. and then you've got this, so much products are stuck on ships.

hanjin ships waiting outside ports this morning as the shipping company navigates the bankruptity. i don't know why any other company would pick today to make an announcement but sony today will announce a new version of its best-selling playstation 4. going to call it the neo. that's at noon today. peter thiel wrote an op-ed in the "washington post" voicing his support for donald trump. thiel gave a key note speech at trump's nomination this summer. speaking of silicon valley rich guy, john mcof affee is already in the news. intel. he is the guy who sold it to intel. remember, he was actually once a presidential candidate as well earlier this year running in the libertarian party but then lost to gary johnson. >> but he still wants his name out there. >> but it's already being used for which they paid him hundreds of millions of dollars. >> but yet it's still out there this morning, too.

6:18. the state of michigan hopes to advance the testing of driveless cars by taking the driver out of the equation. the state senate is expected to approve the bill that would no longer require a person be inside a self-driving car during testing. the bill would require a researcher to promptly take control of the vehicle when necessary. michigan is trying to take on the lead of building and developing autonomous vehicles. as long as we're still controlling our own car on the roads today maybe keep your top down on theconvertibles. >> that is the car to have today. >> key. >> if you're on the coast you will enjoy it and tri-valley it's going to feel a bit like a hair dryer as you drive around today. air temperatures in the mid to upper 90s later on but clear skies, gorgeous start to the day. one of the perks of being up this early in the morning is nice presun rise views. san jose right now, 60 degrees. high temperatures approaching the 90s. another view around the peninsula. forecast around palo alto, 60.

highs there into the upper 80s. heading into the afternoon. view from san bruno mountain. san francisco up to 80. look at the smoke outside. looking off to the east. wind direction aloft. out of the north pushing smoke from a wildfire in butte county. you can see the smoke here moving from north to south. so again, if you're in the tri-valley especially or the north bay, too, you will notice the areas of smoke. hazy skies and another "spare the air" day today. ground level ozone. areas of smoke at times for the afternoon and those temperatures really krampging up low to mid 90s south of san jose today. near 80 in sflans. north bay and tri-valley today seeing the temperatures climb through the 90s but relief is in sight tomorrow. we will see the low clouds making a comeback. temperatures cooling more noticeably in san francisco. take longer for the valleys to cool off. mid 80s in the forecast by friday and saturday. to see what's happening outside right now here's mike. it's pretty predictable as far as that pattern goes.

6:24. nbc bay area responds is wondering if you're in the same boat as the people you're about to meet. >> they say they received notices from collection agencies years after getting an ambulance ride. consumer investigator chris chmura picks up the story from

there. >> the collection notices ranged from $1700 to $3300. the thing is, the people involved say they never received a bill in the first place. kenneth, helen, and steven all tell the same story. they or their loved ones required ambulance service a few years ago. but just recently received a notice saying than unpaid bill was sent to collections. and that could damage their credit. the company in question is rural metro ambulance. its website says it's operates in santa clara. in a statement rural metro explained why an initial bill didn't go out but a collection notice did. quote, the issue resulted from a processing change that was mate when rural metro came out of bankruptcy. we have identified and corrected the issue and are handling each inquiry on a case-by-case basis. after speaking up, kenneth, helen, and steven say their bills have been erased. skaifing them thousands of dollars. did you receive a collection notice for an ambulance ride? please tell us about it.

killed in san pablo. her baby shower was supposed to be this sunday. 6:31. two people are under arrest and one man dead after a shooting in the peninsula's most popular shopping malls. pete suratos is live near the hillsdale shopping center. pete, while the shooting shapd there the wild chase ended in san francisco. >> reporter: good morning, laura. it was quite a case that spaned a number of cities and we're here in that parking lot on the 3500 block of el camino real. you can see this parking lot is really wide open in this area near a number of apartment complexes. want to show you video of about three cars that i saw tow aid way and san mateo pd said those cars were con flekted to the investigation. according to police they say this deadly shooting took place around 7:00 p.m. on the 3500 block of el camino reel in this parking lot. when they arrived, a 31-year-old man was shot multiple times. that victim dying at the scene.

that high speed car space of the suspects went from san mateo to 92 westbound up 280, ending in san francisco. here's san mateo pd talking a little bit more about the chase. >> so our officers went down hillsdale looking for a possible suspect vehicle. they picked up the suspect vehicle at hillsdale and 101. pursuit started up 101. the car took 92 westbound to 280 and then to 380 and then northbound 101 and then the pursuit ended in san francisco where they did a felony stop and two suspects were taken of into custody. >> reporter: san mateo pd says this is an isolated incident. it is an on going investigation. if you have any information, contact san mateo pd. pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you so much, pete. 6:33. san jose police are thanking the public for helping them track down a convicted sex offender accuse of trying to kad nap two young women. kris sanchez is live in san

jose. the entire community is relieved to have this man off the streets. >> right, laura. yes, he said they are relieved. we know that because they're posting about it on social media. the very place where they shared that wanted sex offender's face and picture over and over and over again in a last couple of days. and san jose police say that because of that social media engagement, they were able to track down david lee russell yesterday morning, two days after asking the public to help keep an eye out for him. russell did shave his goatee and ditched his white suv for his silver sedan. the people still spotted him in the area of oakland road and charles avenue about eight miles from willow glen where he tried to incapacitate a young woman who fought him off a week ago yesterday. it was also about ten miles from hillsdale and 87 where police say a different young woman fought him off on friday. russell was unsuccessful in both of those alleged kidnapping attempts and the public 150e78d to want to keep it that way. >> i showed the story on

facebook. shared the story on my instagram. and i had a lot of family members and friends reach out to me. >> this is an example of the community working together with the police, how we quickly and efficiently take somebody off the streets. >> reporter: russell was arrested on two counts of attempted kidnapping, two counts of attempted kidnapping with the intent of sexual offense, two cutes of assault to commit a felony and outstanding or want for a dui. he has two prior sexual assault convictions. russell is off the streets for now and will be before a judge, schedule to see the judge on september 20th to answer to these felony charges. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." >> kris, thank you very much. dozens of cats abandoned in novato. the staff there say the people who did this may have done the same thing before. security camera at the marin humane society captured three

people in a blue vehicle dropping off a box early sunday morning. they rang the buzzer. you see them carrying it out of their car. after they received it and then just took off. 34 cats were inside of the box. it's not the first time the boxes of cats have been left in novato. shelter staff believe the group has made five drops in four years leaving some 130 cats to be cared for. >> and this could have been avoid. spay and neuter could have avoided this. that's why we want to know who they are. make sure the cats are healthy but help spay and neuter so this doesn't happen again. >> a letter of apology came with the delivery. it says a friend's great grandmother had too many babies. the shelter says it's going to cost about $500 to prepare each one of these kittens for adoption. the search for new police chief in san francisco is moving forward today. so far the city has received about 60 applications for the job. and today a recruiter will give a presentation on the search as well as feedback on what people are looking for in the chief.

next week applications will be reviewed in a closed session followed by interviews in october. three candidates will will be sent to mayor ed lee who will make the decision. among those hopes to get the job is interim chief toney chaplin. he took over for greg sure who resigned amid controversy over police brutality and bigoted and text messages. unlike anything you've seen before it is the first of its kind happening here on nbc tonight. >> both presidential candidates hillary clinton and donald trump will answer questions surrounding military and veterans. in tonight's commander in chief forum. tracie potts is live in washington, d.c. with more on this event airing on nbc bay area. no doubt we will be talking about it tomorrow, tracie. >> no question about that, laura. and at this forum, we're going to see both hillary clinton and donald trump on the same stage. we have live pictures this morning of that stage. but they won't be there at the same time. could turn out to be a friendly

showers. not the case today. we've got strong high pressure keeping us dry but by lunchtime our time this is tropical storm newton. 60 miles per hour. could cross southern arizona maintaining tropical storm strength. that's the case. there's only been six in history that have been able to do that. and this is a pretty large system there and some of the rainfall totals as the wind speeds probably still about the 45-mile-per-hour range crossing into southern arizona. could be two to four inches of rain. the average summertime total for the noen soon is six inches. and heading over towards new mexico over the next 24 hours. around the bay area, hazy skies. no low clouds as you can see there, presunrise view in san jose. 60 for now. tacking on 32 more degrees by the afternoon. winds also important this morning out of the north. which has unfortunately again this morning brought in more smoke from butte county. that will be part of our air quality story today. ground level ozone and smoke

pollution, a share the air day around the bay area with the worst air quality around those interior value is will of the east bay and tri-valley and south bay as we head towards the afternoon. coincidentally, areas that will see the hotter temperatures today mid 90s south of san jose, close to 80 in san francisco. it's been a cool summer but not today. north bay into the low 90s. mid to upper 90s possible today around the tri-valley but notice the sea breeze making a comeback. tomorrow, san francisco cooling down significantly by the time we approach the weekend. and around the tri-valley, slowly m cooling. back in the up pir 80s by friday and saturday. so tracking your morning commute and a hot spot weather wise near the valley. >> we're building on a typical pattern. show you the entire map. zoom in, yes, to start with the south bay out of the altamont valley, slower drive for highway 85 building off the 85 split with 101. all of your northbound routes through san jose show the build holding off for much of silicon valley.

here are the top stories on nbc bay ar. welcome back. before you head out the door, here are the top stories on nbc bay area. >> update to breaking news out of vallejo where police say an early morning standoff has led to the arrest of a suspect if the killing of a pregnant teenager. this was the sdeen scene from a short time ago in an apartment complex on vista street. 18-year-old ilaysia mccoy was shot and killed in the area of 17th street near rumreal boulevard. she was seven months pregnant. her baby shower was supposed to be this weekend. again, investigators say they took 21-year-old luis morales jr. into custody. more violence in place many people are familiar with.

near the hillsdale shopping here? san mateo. the shoeioting happened about 70 last night behind a chase bank and petsmart. two suspects led officers os an high speed chase up the peninsula as you see they were apprehended in san francisco at market and octavia. police believe the victim and suspects knew each other. fire investigators are at palo alto's iconic glass slipper inn this morning. they're trying to figure out what caused a fire at the inn on el camino real. the fire started on the second floor about 9:00 last night. firefighters were able to knock down the flames pretty quickly, about 20 guests however are without a place to stay due to the damage caused by the fire. breaking news in the east bay. the search is on right now for a man and a woman who were involved in a high speed chase through oakland. the air took off during a routine traffic stop leading officers through oakland city streets and tried to go a wrong way on a 580 off-ramp and chp cruiser was calming off the
