and i'm raj mathai, the event begins at 5:00. our story tonight, the jail house interview with a sex offender accused of attacking and trying to kidnap two women. nbc bay area's robert honda has more on the the story. >> reporter: well, the man we talked through a glass partition here at the county jail seemed determined to claimed innocence and says he was bewildered by the allegations, we had a chance to interview david lee russell who was captured near oakland road yesterday after he was spotted by residents, even though he had shaved his beard. police say he tried to kidnap two young women, in our interviews he said they were friendly encounters. >> you have the take over-- you did that, that is kidnapping. if you go to talk to somebody

and walk away, that is not kidnapping. that is not even attempt. >> reporter: the prosecutor scoffed at his explanation, regarding the kidnapping with intent to assault. >> he followed them around for some period of time, he put a sweat shirt over their head and tried to drag them into his car. >> reporter: now the prosecutor says he will seek a life sentence for russell, already a convicted sex offender, coming up at 6:00, more from russell and his interesting explanations for some of the other allegations. live in san jose, robert honda, nbc bay area news. >> okay, robert, we'll see you next hour. this just in, palo alto police have a suspect in custody for a fire at an iconic hotel, flames ripped through the glass slipper inn, which is right on

investigative unit holding the area accountable. a hate crime in the east bay, say this paint is covering up racial slurs and a nazi swastika. the graffiti was discovered in antioch earlier this morning and that is not all. nbc bay area's elise kirchner has more on the possible attempted murder situation. >> reporter: also in this incident, that is because authorities say whoever started this fire intentionally tried to trap three adults and four children sleeping inside that home. but luckily one of the adults woke up to those flames. and now police here are investigating the incident as a hate crime. around 3:00 a.m., sean williams woke up to the screams. >> my 28-year-old daughter woke me up, said this house is on fire. >> reporter: the family gathered

the fire extinguishers to put out the flames. >> i haven't bothered anybody and i don't deserve this. >> reporter: fire trucks pulled up, they saw the lights on the house. >> reporter: susie saw the firefighters put out the flames. then she saw the blue paint sprayed across the home. >> it said the n word and then there was a swastika on the front. >> which is why we're treating this as a hate crime. >> reporter: fire investigators say it was placed outside the home to keep anyone from getting out. >> we're deployed in a way -- the potential intent was to block any emergency egress by the occupants. >> reporter: and if it was not for a family member who woke up in the middle of the night, it could have been deadly. and the homeowner tells us surveillance video caught the suspect actually walking up to the home. police here are now going through the footage and deciding

whether or not to release it publicly. reporting live from antioch tonight, i'm elyce kirchner. thank you, a man accused of gunning down a man was arrested. morales was arrested after a standoff in vallejo. you see the video here. police say he gunned down elaysia mccoy monday night, she and her unborn child also died. officers are also questioning a third suspect, duarte, his brother told the police his cousin was a victim. >> maybe my brother was there, but he is not the one who is responsible for the death of our cousin. >> reporter: at this time, san pablopd is treating the case as a homicide. and disturbing allegations involving a professor at san jose state. not just the allegations of

sexual harassment, but also the response by the university. nbc bay area's damion trujillo has more on the story. >> reporter: well, raj, we have learned that professor luis abdicar was recently put on paid leave, but many asked what took so long since the allegations first arose several months ago. many students and faculty just found out about the allegations today against the university professor luis abdicar. >> i mean, it's pretty shocking, i haven't heard about it. it makes me uncomfortable. >> reporter: according to the report, the professor made comments to a student, asking if she was single and saying he wanted to date her. the report says that he was suspended for ten days then allowed to teach and keep his position as dean. the university's position on sexual had harassment say that it's more common than people

think. >> many of us in the organization know it is common. >> reporter: late yesterday, the university sent out an e-mail to the campus community saying the e-mails are troubling saying the university will investigate and take appropriate actions based on what they learned. we have reached out to the professor's lawyer but have been unable to connect with her so far. she told the paper that the professor was only using a method of teaching and meant no harm. we're live on the campus, i'm damion trujillo. thank you. and a check on the forecast. >> it warmed up today. >> so much hotter, the coast, the peninsula, the interior valleys, as we look at the micro climate forecast tonight you're going to be able to see right now in the east bay. livermore is at 95 degrees, so much warmer than earlier in the week when the temperatures were

in the 70s, humidity dangerously low, at 70%, keeping fire danger up. we'll keep it from 6 to 8:00 tonight, and mild 70s even into 11 p.m. in san francisco, 77, after a high of 81. and a sign of this slight onshore wind is how low the relative humidity is here as well, currently at 28%. but i want to show you a huge change we'll see in the next 18 hours, visible on the future cast here. what this is showing is the fog and marine layer at the immediate coastline. watch this surge as we head throughout thursday moving in through the south. this should be good enough to bring back a cooler breeze for thursday and help to drop our temperatures. so a much drastic change beginning for tomorrow morning with the fog beginning to filter back into san francisco, this will spread clouds into the east bay. 64 degrees, we'll stay hazy in the south bay with low 60s.

as we take you to your micro climate forecast on thursday, you can see across the south bay, instead of mid-90s we drop down with that cooler westerly wind. 87 in san jose, for the peninsula, 63 in half moon bay, the milder beach weather begins to go away. in palo alto down to 82. san francisco out of the 80s as colder wind is out your back, 69 for the the flame district, north bay, east bay, trivalley district, warmer in livermore, about a ten degree drop, 88 in danville and 85 for pleasanton, oakland, 74 degrees, walnut creek, 87, north bay, 90s beginning to fade. let's take you to the extended forecast. it's cooler ocean breeze that will stay in place. san francisco, we'll see the results here as 60s remain in

picture of the new eastern sepa of the bay bridge, soon, a mini version will light up downtown san francisco, all part of the new bay transit center helping buses to travel between the terminal at first and mission streets and the bay bridge without having to negotiate clogged city streets. and the coast guard says an old river boat that sunk near bethel island will be removed soon. nobody was hurt, but there was about 600 gallons of diesel on board. the company plans to bring the boat to the surface first and remove all the diesel which will take about three weeks. until then, the coast guard will moderate the area. a big night of politics here on nbc. you're looking live at the special town hall happening right now at dominican university. what happens here tonight will
