shootings targeting drivers on a busy san jose roadway. "today in the bay" continues right now. a very good thursday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm sam brock. you don't have to be coastal, a little bit breezy for the rest of the people now, too. >> and in fact yesterday temperatures in the 0s. triple digits, nothing like that today. temperatures cooling off. 50s and 60s right now as you get going to start off this morning and you can see from every vantage point, clear skies. no fog at the coastline. limited from half moon bay and santa cruz. in the afternoon we will see sunshine. 70s and 80s for most of us. albeit, cool at the coastline. 69 for san francisco. that's ten draes coegrees coole yesterday. even cooler into the weekend. and week ahead for next week. we'll talk about that seven-day forecast coming up in 15 minutes. mike, what are youing looking at right now on the roads? >> seeing the commute to build.

typical pattern in most areas. south bay starting to build. peninsula, no delays. and the east bay standard commute. concern has been the bay bridge since overnight last night. we still have some slowing showing up eastbound 80 getting out of san francisco. but just got word from chp they have reopened all lane on that lower deck and the upper deck should have all lanes open as well after the earlier police activity has cleared from the scene. show you the shot from emeryville. we had a couple of issues. a stall as well as one lane closed. the metering lights are on. the traffic smoothly across the bridge. pete has been asked to leave. now you're at a new location. what's going on there? >> reporter: good morning. we're here now moved to the i'm bar der ro. all that activity we were just talking about, you see the flashing lights from our vantage point there on the eastbound side of the bay bridge. and it all started around 11:00 p.m. according to chp. we can show you some of that scene video we had on the bay bridge.

they say there was a man who got involved in an altercation. and we've later learned that he is actually an assault suspect in an assault that took place near the trans bay terminal. he started walking along the ledge of the bay bridge. causing quite a ruckus. that's when people called the chp to see what was going on. here's what they said he was doing when they showed up. >> they were called first that hechesz just walking on the -- in the lane of traffic. not on the side. there was calls that he was jumping towards cars, obviously very dangerous situation. and then he was throwing cones that i guess were located on the bridge rail into the lane of traffic. and then there were further calls that they thought he appeared to be under the influence of drugs. >> reporter: now, this man was taken into custody. like i say, you could still see caltrans there. seems to be activity there. we're also being told that the man has been taken to sf general for a mental evaluation.

we're live in san francisco, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thanks, pete. also new this morning. santana row turned crime scene. overnight we learned san jose police are investigating an armed robbery right in the middle of the busy shopping center. happened just after 9:00. alleged victim called nbc bay area overnight and said she and her friend were held up at gun point. she said the suspect took her friend's cash. kris sanchez is at santana row this morning. she will join us with a live report at 6:30. also right now in the south bay, police say this is the man who has been shooting at drivers along a busy stretch of blossom hill road in south san jose. "today in the bay" sharon katsuda is live at the main jail in san jose where the suspect is being held. sharon, this man was initially arrested for a separate crime and then police found a clue. >> that's right, sam. the san jose police chief says it was great detective work. he is behind bars here at the santa clara county main jail being held without bail this

morning. he's accused of terrorizing drivers between may and august. police say 30-year-old michael lewis is behind the shootings along blossom hill road between monterrey and coddle roads. they took place over the past several months. some neighbors said they stopped going out at night out of fear but now neighbors are relieved to hear the suspect is the custody. >> because my wife and myself travel through this area quite frequently. like i said, we live less than three minutes away from here. >> now people can live in peace and they don't have to worry about getting shot. >> reporter: in the ten shatt g i shootings he shot only one time. two people were wounded. san jose police say lewis was arrested last month on an unrelated charge. during an investigation at his house they found a handgun that matched the shell casings and bullets connected to the shootings. lewis faces four counts of attempted murder. i'm sharon katsuda, "today in

the bay." developing right now, still smoldering. firefighters swapping up after battling a fire at a recycling center in san carlos. it happened at the shoreway environmental center onshoreway road. the massive conveyer belt that sorts recyclables is what caught on fire. it grew to a four alarm fire, meaning more crews had to be called in. the fire is now out. firefighters will continue to keep watch throughout the morning. no police chief now to less us aers as well. oakland mayor libby schaaf says 12 officers are being disciplined and four fired after an internal investigation. the mayor says the officers were let go for attempted sexual assault, lewd conduct in public, and assisting in the crime of prostitution, among other charges. the woman at the center of the investigation, self proclaimed prostitute said she t slept with more than a dozen police officers. some she says while underage. >> i am deeply sorry for the

harm that this scandal has caused, particularly to community trust. >> i'm hopeful that there are criminal charges because they should be prosecuted. >> the now 19-year-old at the center of the controversy is currently in florida at a rehabilitation center. she was recently put in jail for biting at a guard at the center. two attorneys from the bay area are heading to florida to represent her. politics now and division 2016. hillary clinton will be in north carolina, donald trump in ohio. last night they shared their views on national security, the military, and veterans rights here on nbc bay area. it was the first ever commander in chief forum. clinton outlined how she would deal with isis and admitted her vote for the iraq war when she was a new york senator was a mistake. she also faced tough questions about her e-mail server. >> it was a mistake to have a personal account.

i would certainly not do it again. i make no excuses for it. it was something that should not have been done. >> in the meantime, donald trump maintained his plan to defeat isis is not for broadcast. he says he's not going to give our ken enemies his playbook but he would ask generals to submit their plan on how to fight isis. trump also said this about u.s. military generals. >> i think under the leadership of barack obama and hillary clinton the generals have been reduced to rubble. they have been reduced to a point where it's embarrassing for our country. >> trump also spoke about russian president vladimir putin, saying that putin has a, quote, strong control over a country he's been a leader far more than our president. back now to hillary clinton. as far as potentially putting american soldiers in harm's way again. clinton said that would be the last possible option. trump said she would also be very cautious. laura? >> thanks, sam.

and we'll see 60s return to the coastline. unlike yesterday we're at san francisco back in the 80s. 69 degrees for today. now mike has been tracking issues this morning. what do you get for the peninsula driver? >> a crash and debris. i'll also talk about the bay bridge in a second. we see san jose where your typical pattern starting off for silicon valley. no surprises unless you're coming down the peninsula into mountain view. reports of a crash. may be a big rig involved. that was the initial report off to the shoulder. now some glass and debris reported in that same area. be careful between shoreline. we don't see any additional slowing. it's been five minutes since that was reported. meanwhile here, the bay bridge has been about ten minutes since we reported all lanes clear. all the slowing has cleared from that lower deck out of san francisco and all lanes are open in both directions from the earlier police activity. pete suratos was following that this morning. down the east shore freeway. we don't have real problems. some folks might avoid the bay bridge. may be more traffic across the san mateo bridge over the next half hour.

san jose police tracked him down near oakland road tuesday. when asked if he shaved his facial hair to avoid detection he offered this explanation. >> i don't like gray hair. >> so you didn't do any of that to change your appearance? >> no. i didn't even know none of this was happening. >> the prosecutor says he will seek a life sentence. russell is being held without bail. he returns to court in one week. new details now on a fire that we first brought to you yesterday morning at a local institution. palo alto police say they have a suspect in custody for starting a fire at that inn. flames raised through a second floor room of the glass slipper inn about 9:00 tuesday night. the glass slipper zin is right on el camino real. investigatoring believe miguel gamero started to fire after continue front his estranged wife in the room at the inn. officer says that gamero threatened him with a knife but they took him into custody

safely. a court rules driving suing uber must resolve their claims individually and not through a class action lawsuit. ruling came over a lawsuit by drivers claiming uber's background checks violated their right bus most drivers signed an agreement with uber three years ago opting to resolve disputes through an independent arbitrator. the federal court is uphold that agreement. this ruling could affect another class action lawsuit that claims uber exploits drivers by treating them as independent contractors and not employees. all right. a lot of hype heading into yesterday and apple pretty much did as expected introducing the new iphone 7 on wednesday. >> scott mcgrew, more people interested in those new headphones. >> new headphones interested, maybe rolling their eyes a little bit. the headphones called air pods and wireless. they don't come with the new foeb. ex150. many people immediately pointing out how easy it would be to drop one and lose it. don't leave them in your pocket. throw your jeans in the wash. others saying it looks like you've got cigarettes in your

recovered samples may hold clues to the origin of the solar system. that when we see near earth, the spacecraft is expected to reach that asteroid in about two years and will return back in 2023. so near is kind of a relative term. interesting information. >> i'm going to be asking are we there yet, over and over again. >> backseat driver. >> exactly. >> in the near future we're going to feel like fall. cooldown coming our way. >> it will get cooler over the next couple of daysnd by next week, you're going to notice it again today as we get going. really going to be cooling off more noticeably. even in san francisco, yesterday got up to 82 degrees. nothing like that coming for you today. back into the 60s. but you can see we are waking up to clear skies at the coastline. at least from that vantage point in san francisco. and in san jose. we don't have any fog either. sunrise coming up as we speak. traffic moving nicely. as we get a peek at the temperatures, 50s and 60s for the most part. chilly in the north bay. 59 in palo alto. and 60 in san jose.

later on this afternoon, we'll see a good spread in temperatures unlike what we saw yesterday where we had 80s stacked up at the coastline and 90s for everybody else. today nothing like that. back to 60s at the coastline. 70s and 80s around the inmore bay. 87 today for san jose. same for livermore. 89 for concord. still be warm spots but again this morning not seeing as much fog. a lot of cloud cover is held back to the coastline for places like half-mo moon bay and santa cruz. that's really all as far as we're seeing in terms of cloud cover this morning. high pressure, that starts to back off as we head towards the next couple days. trough starts to dig in across the west coast. that's the jet stream. highway for storms. as we put this into motion you will notice the weekend, we will see that storm system to our north. that's going to dive south, sunday and monday. by tuesday, it will be over the bay area. and even showers and thunderstorms could be possible as we head towards the mountains. here at home, just cooling off. if you're headed to sonoma wine country this weekend, temperatures cooling back from 84 on friday. back to 76 on sunday.

monterey bay temperatures cooling as well back from 9 degrees for tomorrow. 71 for saturday. and then 62 degrees for sunday. and santa cruz if you're headed to the beach this weekend, saturday looks like your best bay with temperatures in mid 60s. every other day temperatures cooling back in the -- i should say 70s back to the 60s as we round out the weekend. inland value is will stay warm. 80s go back to the 70s for next week. san francisco you stay in the mid 60s with more clouds cover for next week. temperatures taking a little bit of a dip even at the coastline by monday. low 60s there. mike, you've had a busy morning. >> fortunately we're tracking a pretty enough calmer drive across the bay. we'll talk about the bridge in a second. the south bay shows no problem right now. that first burst kicked in. we should see the second one hit and stick coming up in the next few minutes. this one is sticking around for at least the last five minutes. southbound 680 at stone ridge south of the dublin interchange. we do see a slower drive-thru

stalled in the senate. a san jose state professor accuse of sexually assault sexually harassing one of his students was allowed to keep his job. growing anger on the campus that is forcing the university to re-evaluate the situation. he said he wanted to date her. aptekar's lawyer says the class was discussing romantic relationships and his comments were made in context. but the university investigated aptekar and found him to be inappropriate. he was suspended for ten days but not fired. all this was brought to light by a mercury news investigation. >> makes me question like what other things have they just pushed under the rug. >> i mean, it's pretty shocking. i haven't heard anything other besides right now. so it makes me uncomfortable. >> this week the new university president said that the allegations are troubling and that aptekar will be investigated again.

valley. we just saw 85, 87, 101 start to show speeds just below the speed limit. typical pattern for a thursday. meanwhile looking over toward the crash. south 680, stone ridge just south of dublin interchange. right shoulder. slowing. i'm tracking that. that's the only incident for this section. here we have hayward and in toward the san mateo bridge with a standard flow. on top of the screen, metering lights are on at the bray bridg. westbound looks like traffic has stopped. its a not. we typically see this. burst of traffic hits. watch as it slowly makes its way to the peninsula and smooths out. so far standard there. back to you. >> thanks, mike. 6:31. robbed at gun point at santana row. right now san jose police are investigating an armed robbery right in the heart of the popular shopping center. "today in the bay's" kris sanchez is live at santana row this morning. kris, i understand you just got an update from police. >> we just got confirmation from police that they know who they are looking for at this point. we want to give you the lay of the land. this is near where that armed

robbery happened. we're right in the middle of san tan no row where the valencia hotel is, tommy bahamas. somewhere between here and olin and hatton street where there is a parking structure where these two women were robbed at gun point. santana row and olin and luxury apartments 400 feet away. now we know san jose police say say the suspects are either two asian or two hispanic men who were armed with a handgun and they stole the victims' purse. they then fled in a small white four-door car. the suspects have not been identified by name. nor have they been apprehended. we do know that one of the victims reported the robbery to police but also contacted us because she wanted to make sure that people are aware as they walk around here at night. a victim told us she and her friend were held up. the robber took her friend's cash and took her purse. i did post a nap of the incident where this happened on twitter. you can find me krisnbc if you

want to see it for yourself in case you frequent santana row. >> popular place. sigh of relief for south bay drivers as it appears that a violent crime spree could be coming to an end in south san jose. police say they caught the man accused of terrorizing drivers. 30-year-old michael lewis is allegedly behind a rash of shootings along blossom hill road. each time he was firing just once, sometimes after midnight at oncoming cars. those shootings date back to may and continue through the early part of august. some people tell us they stopped going out at night for fear of what was happening. >> because my wife and myself travel through this area quite frequently. like i say, we live less than three minutes away from here. >> now people can live in peace. don't have to worry about getting shot. >> there were ten shootings and in two instances people were wounded by shrapnel or flying glass. lewis was arrested august 16th on often unrelated charge.

but detectives say they found a handgun that matched one connected to the shootings me faces four koubts counts of att murder. developing now, underground explosion so strong it destroyed a manhole cover leaves it in pieces. these pictures are from the fire department. firefighters say underground electrical volt exploded last night about 10:00. it happened at center street and grove way. no one was hurt. thousands of homes and businesses lost power but it's all restored so far. pg&e is looking into what caused the explosion. later today the mayor of antioch is expected to address an alleged hate crime that targeted an african-american family and it could have been fatal. here's what it looked like after the fire was extinguish especially. family members found the home on fire around 3:00 yesterday morning. this happened on mccormack court in antioch. there were three adults and four children inside at the time. they managed to get out. but once outside the home, another very disturbing discovery.

>> the "n" word and a swastika on the front. >> which is why we're treating this as a hate crime. >> whoever did this could be facing attempted murder charges because the fire was strategically set to trap those people inside their house. the homeowner says surveillance video did capture images of the suspect but so far no arrests. new charges for the man accuse of starting the devast e devastating clayton fire now accuse of starting four additional fires. pashilk pleaded not guilty yesterday to four new charges of arson which attorneys say are related to various grass and brush fires. pashilk who was once trained as an inmate firefighter is accuse of intention fally starting the clayton fire last month. along with more than half a dozen other fires. close to 200 homes in lake county were destroyed by the clayton fire along with more than 200 other structures. a first of its kind forum put both presidential candidates in the hot seat. nbc's matt lauer and u.s. veterans asked them how they would perform as commander in

american, native american, among other themed housing options. the way california schools are graded is changing. new school report cards will be more detailed. state board of education will consider new grading systems today and tomorrow during their meeting in sacramento. the last grading system was suspended three years ago. officials and teachers say that report card which graded schools by three digit number called api scores was too simplistic. criticing say the new grading plan officials are considering is confusing. in d.c., flunking a drug maker, lawmakers on capitol hill are going to be investigating the massive markups of epipens. senate panel is opening an inquiry in what matter. mylan raised the price from $100 to $500. mylan blamed the health care market for the price increase. following public anger the company is now offering coupon and developing a cheaper jenngec version of the same drug.

yesterday for the most part things went as expected. apple getting rid of the headphone jack on the new iphone 7. >> you say it's not about the headphones. >> good morning. it's about the things that go in the headphone jack that aren't head phones. i have some of them here. the square credit card reader. and we talked about this thermometer that kinsa that plug into the iphone headphone jack which means the company doesn't have to pay a licensing fee to access the phone. if there is no headphone jack companies will likely in the future have to pay to access the lightning jack. that's why at least in my opinion, yesterday apple announced no headphone jack. now, as how are you going to listen to music on the new iphone with no headphone jack, the new phone comes with new headphones that connect to the lightning port. you can also use old headphones as well with an adapter that will come with the phone or use blue tooth, wireless headphone or speakers. we talked about the hanjin

bay area. >> more than just a scare at santana row. overnight police are investigating a an armed robbery that happened at about 10:00. one of the alleged victims called nbc bay area overnight and said that she was held up at gun point there. she said the suspect ended up taking her friend's cash. police have just released a suspect description saying they're looking for two asian or hispanic men who are armed with a handgun. the suspectses fled in a small white four-door car. police say they caught the man accuse of terrorizing drivers along blossom hill road. 30-year-old michael lewis is allegedly behind a rash of shootings along blossom hill road tweent monterey and coddle roads. each time firing just once. in the ten shootings two people were wounded by shrapnel or flying glass. san jose police say lewis was. >> reporter: rested august 16th on unrelated charge. detectives found a handgun that matched the one connected to the shooting. lewis faces four counts of

attempted murder. early this morning there was a seven-hour long standoff that created a traffic nightmare on the bay bridge that just ended about an hour and a half ago. chp says a man who allegedly assaulted someone at the transbay terminal in san francisco ended up on the lower deck of the western span. that was around 11:00 last night in the eastbound direction. drivers say the man was walking in a lane, jumping towards and throwing construction cones at vehicles. the suspect was finally taken into custody about 5:30 this morning. he was taken to sf general for a mental health evaluation. also developing right now, still smoldering. firefighters are mopping up after battling a fire at a recycling center in san carlos. all this happened at the shoreway environmental center onshoreway road. the massive conveyer belt that sorts recyclables is what caught fire. it grew into a four alarm fire which means more crews had to be called in to help out. nobody was injured and the fire
