6:03 am
today. >> yeah. i feel better. feel a lot safer. >> definitely relieved. but i'm worried if somebody that senseless does something like that it could happen again. >> reporter: michael james lee lewis was arrested on unrelated charges in mid august. and between then and now investigators connected the dots to four of those ten shootings. while there have not been any additional shootings in that area since he has been in custody, police say they cannot yet rule out that there could be another shooter. in san jose, kris sanchez, "today in the bay." it is 6:03. six years ago today a pipeline explosion in san bruno killed eight people. dozens of homes were just flattened in the explosion and subsequent fire. a jury found pg&e guilty of violating the safety laws and obstructing the investigation into this explosion. pg&e may be facing a $3 million fine for those charges.

6:32 am
should be noted the chief of santa clara police did say that even if his officers some of them did not volunteer to work the security shift here during the 49ers game they would have been able to staff it with officers perhaps from other departments. but that's no longer necessary as it is now clear that the union that represents santa clara police officers is encouraging its members to work the voluntary overtime shifts here at levi stadium during the 49ers games in spite of the protests being put on by 49ers quarterback colin kaepernick. that is something has been an issue for the officers here. and they hinted they might refuse to take these shifts because he's been sitting out the national anthem before games to protest police brutality and was also photographed wearing socks that depicted pigs wearing a police uniform. why the change of heart from the police union? this week santa clara mayor lisa gillmor expressed support for the police officers but encouraged them to work the game. if they did not choose to provide security for the 49ers
6:33 am
she said their actions could be misunderstood. the police chief and union met this week with a local naacp. both sides are now hoping that kaepernick can do the same and agree to a face to face meeting. >> santa clara police department are the ones who protect the stayed july. protect the team in and out. so they should have a much closer relationship with kap. they can understand his viewpoint and he can understand their viewpoint and once the two see what the other is saying, we can move on from there. >> it takes about 70 officers to volunteer to work overtime to provide sufficient security at 49ers games. again, the santa clara police chief says these games would have been fully staffed regardless of whether it was his officers or officers from another department. reporting live here in santa clara outside levi stadium, bob redell, "today in the bay." the man accused of shooting at cars along a busy south bay road will be back in court today. investigators say michael lewis

6:36 am
ask if police were making any suspects. one man there said he would like to keep that information secret. this morning the controversy surrounding the president of the san francisco school board continues. he's made national headlines for his proposal to rename public schools. now, matt haney is clarifying his stance. he says he wants to make sure the school communities know it's their choice to rename schools. haney says george washington high school and francis scott key elementary were named after important figures but they were also slave owners. he suggested renaming the school after maya angelou. ultimately he wants to open a dialogue about historical leaders who may be more relevant to students and families today. >> the plan was to bring it to the board. i think i'm going to take little bit of time to listen to people and talk to people about what makes sense here. and make sure we clarify some of these things before we jump in to this. i think george washington high

be at the fairgrounds to talk about banning urban shield from the bay area all together. it's 6:37. let's check in with rob and get a weekend forecast. good morning. >> good morning. the forecast we're seeing today does look like the weekend forecast. low clouds to start from the north bay into the south bay this morning. see the low clouds over san jose and later on today saratoga will be seeing temperatures approaching the mid 80s. low 80s closer to san jose. upper 60s with patchy low clouds lingering around san francisco. for the north bay numbers in the 70s and 80s and tri-valley temperatures today in the mid 80s. the weekend forecast holding steady. trending cooler and breezy in the inland seven-day forecast, especially by the time we approach monday and tuesday. to see what's happening with your friday commute, here's mike. >> looking at the south bay where we have this crash on highway 87. overall you will see the speed sensors and the patterns are typical but light build over here overall because it's friday. but here this is a question of how quickly it can clear this northbound 87 at curtner.
6:39 am
crash just about over to the right shoulder but you see the slow down. that's a tough spot at a tough time because we're seeing that portion of 87, see the build just north of capitol expressway. over here in sunnyvale, north 85 and evelyn. the off-ramp affected by a branch that fell off a tree there. we'll have activity there. but the freeway itself maintaining a light flow of traffic. you're okay there. rest of the bay moves well. approaching the bay bridge. still have a slow down. i would caution that motorcycle rider, still clearing at the harrison off-ramp there. should be clear any second. back to you. >> thank you, mike. 6:39. drivers going through san francisco's popular golden gate park may feel speed bumps. this is in hopes of improving the safety of people walking or riding bikes unside the park. there have been two deadly crashes recently. the city is nowing looking into putting ten new speed dumps in the area of jfk drive, traverse drive, and the great highway. the public can weigh in at a town hall meeting next friday. coming up, a solemn day.
