separate you from the rest of the crew. that may be in place for another hour or so. back to you. breaking news we've been following overnight. a peninsula condo up in flames. firefighters race to douse that fire burning in smoan mateo. >> pete, one lady lost her dog in knows flames but she tried hard to save him, didn't she? >> reporter: she certainly did. good morning to you, sam and kris. we're here on tin san mateo. this is the townhome complex we're talking about. there were about 14 engines brought out here. let's get to some of that video to show you what the fire looked like when our crews showed up. the fire started around 10:45. firefighters say they put it out in about 20 minutes, but it's the smoke in the attic that was

the issue. when it reached three stories, a second alarm was called. the main fire was extinguished but spread to the attic area. there were five units displaced including the woman who was in that unit who lost her dog. here is what fire crews had to say about this. >> able to distinguish the main condominium fire. fire burning in the attic space made up of this foam insulation, two layers of it with plywood. >> no one reported injuries at this time. the residents weren't home when the fire was reported. about eight people displaced in that complex. the fire is no longer smoldering. we'll have crews on the scene to find out what caused this fire in the first place. pete suratos for "today in the bay." alum rock neighbors are banding tok after an 88-year-old

woman was brutally beaten inside her own home. at a resident meeting in san jose, several hundred people came together and decided to launch basically a new version of a neighborhood watch. they want everyone to look out for each other just like family. >> we've got to keep an eye out for each other. >> how do we take care of the elders. >> this comings after the arrest of 19-year-old zachary can who beat and robbed 88-year-old flo douglas. we're told she's currently in grave condition in the hospital. the vigil is set tonight outside her home. a store clerk in morgan hill is accused of molesting children who visited his store. among the many concerns here, are there more victims who have not stepped forward. 672-year-old felipe gonzalez police say inappropriately touched children when they went into his store. this is very close to britton

middle school. lots of kids go there. police are asking anyone with information on the case to give him a call. >> the young woman at the center of a police sex abuse case is back in the bay area this morning. more charges could be coming for officers. celeste guap who wants to be known by her real name jasmine is reportedly at an undisclosed location receiving counseling. there could be charges against seven bay area officers. we spoke to jasmine's attorney, pamela price. she says the community deserves to know the truth and the d.a. needs to stop dragging its feet. >> i think mark peterson, the district attorney, should explain to the citizens of contra costa county why it has taken him more than a year to reach a conclusion to an investigation. >> all kids make bad decisions. all kids do things that their parents are absolutely shocked by. the question is how does the community respond. >> price says jasmine was first

victimized at 12 years old. jasmine claims she had sex with up to 30 officers. some of those encounters taking place when she was a minor. a community remains outraged and on edge after the beating of a woman in a san francisco neighborhood, a beating caught on camera. this suspect was seen coming out of nowhere and punching a woman in lafayette park. as the victim continues to recover, the neighbors are stunned by this, repeated punches. last night they came together in a show of force. >> frankly, i'm oh trying to figure out what i'm going to do when i have this baby, what i need to do to protect myself when i'm out and about. i don't know what that is. >> supervisor mark farrell who organized the meeting says he's going to secure funding for better lighting in the park, at least that's a start. your weekend can be summed up with one word, hot.

the dow at 18,212. samsung has formally recalled all galaxy note 7 smart phones sold in the u.s. the company will either replace the ones with new batteries or give customers a refund. samsung has received 92 reports of phones overheating in the u.s. including 26 reports of burns and 55 cases of property damage. samsung announcing the recall in conjunction with the consumer product safety commission. and chrysler is recalling nearly 2 million vehicles worldwide because of an air bag issue linked to three deaths and five injuries. a defect can prevent them from deploying during a crash. it includes the sebring, chrysler 200, dodge avenger and the jeep patriot. >> a lot of recalls this morning. facebook founder mark zuckerberg's plan to rebuild the

four neighboring houses around his long time home is reportedly not getting the like he wanted. the architectural review board voted down the plan. he bought the four home surrounding his home in crescent park to rebuild smaller and build what neighbors believe was a quasi compound. the review board said the plan would violate zoning board and reduce housing stock. they recommended to not approve the project. to decision 2016. a $2.00 a pack cigarette tax hike is one of the hot button issues for the november ballot. the battle is already in full force. you've probably seen it on tv. it would introduce new regulations for the e-cigarette industry. claims from the no side are about where those tax revenues might go. only some voters are buying

teacher is in hot wat after the student's grade for not standing a lake county high school teacher is in hot water after the district says she lowered a student's grade for not standing during the pledge of allegiance. >> leyl lanny thomas is a descendant of a native american tribe. because of that she hasn't stood for the pledge since second grade. this year the home room teacher dropped her grade because she didn't stand because she counted the pledge as participation. >> i was mad when she lowered my grade because i worked hard for it. i turned everything in. did whatever she wanted me to do in her class. >> the school superintendent is reviewing this incident and says the teacher will be disciplined for violating the freedom of speech policy as long as the first amendment rights of the student. >> police in new mexico are

crediting three young boys. in this surveillance video you can see the two suspects cutting into the soft top roof of that car. the car belongs to the minister and this happened in the parking lot of her own church. they're trying to wave, come on over, look what those guys just did. the suspects got a big surprise when the three kids carrying pipes and sticks, ran up and managed to scare them off. >> they were waving, so mad. i said, my god, these kids, so brave and courageous. they're heroes. >> we didn't believe him when he said someone was trying to break in the car because that's how he acts. >> should we do it? should we help them out. >> i was kind of scared, but not that much. >> they're little, but they're fierce. they've got guts. the minister's car has been broken into three times. >> that made me a little misty, those kids doing the right thing. a few extra prayers for a church on the peninsula.
