directions off the nimitz freeway. crews are clearing. the commute not really a problem. back to you. >> an update to breaking news on the peninsula, a woman watching in horror as her home burns overnight with her little dog trapped inside her apartment. you can see several police officers trying to hold her back while she tries to get back in. "today in the bay's" pete suratos has been on scene since 4:30 this morning and joins us now with more. pete? >> reporter: good morning, sam. unfortunately the set of circumstances for that woman you just mentioned, but for the most park crews have cleared out of this san mateo complex. we have video from thestein and the woman held back by police. she wasn't home when the fire was called in around 10:45. her dog was inside the condo at the time of the fire. that dog unfortunately passed away. the fire took place here in san

mateo was put out in about 20 minutes. there were issues of smoke smoldering in the attic. that's what we're hearing from san mateo fire. we spoke with them and they talked about the challenges of fighting this fire in that attic area. >> the fire has been burning up in the attic space which is made up of this foam insulation, styrofoam insulation. two layers of this with also plywood. >> there were no reported injuries at this time. five units were affected. about eight people displaced as a result of the fire. i'm being told there will be investigators here on the scene as they try to determine exactly what caused this condo fire in the first place. we're live in san mateo, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> thank you very much, pete. alum rock neighbors are banning together again after an 88-year-old woman was brutally beaten and robbed inside her own home. as a -- at a residence meeting in san jose, several hundred people gathered to watch a new

version of a neighborhood watch. they want everyone to look out for each other like family. >> we've got to keep an eye out for each other. >> it's about how to watch your back and how to take care of the elders. >> this comes after the arrest of this man, 19-year-old zachary cuen who deputies say beat and robbed 88-year-old flo douglas last week. we're told she's still in grave condition. there's a vigil set up in her name tonight outside her home. >> a store clerk in morgan hill is accused of molesting children visiting his store. among the many concerns, are there more vic simms. police say he inappropriately touched children when he came into the mark. police are asking anyone with information on the case to please call him. >> two people accused of setting an antioch home on fire and spray painting racial slurs on the wall are scheduled to be

arraigned. police arrested roy charles sof varry and christine mcdaniels this weak. they face several charges. surveillance video caught someone throwing molotov cocktails at the home. investigators say the suspects were involved in a dispute with someone who lives at that home. a 9--month-old german schepp is recovering at an animal shelter after she was shot. someone dropped off the dog in martinez after he was found injured on monument boulevard. animal control says the bullet could be the key to finding the dog's shooter. >> once we get the bullet back from ballistics and find out the caliber, that will tell us more about the distance it was shot from and what kind of gun it could have came from. >> he's walking on three legs there. the poor guy had one leg amputated. otherwise, vets say the dog will make a recovery. a bay area lawmaker has started a push to require all

federal agents to safely store their weapons. yesterday the bill was introduced inspired by the deadly shooting of kate steinle. it would require all federal law enforcement agencies to establish safe practices for keeping the weapons stored safely. it was a gun from a bureau of land management agent that was stolen used to kill steinle on san francisco's pier 14. a similar california bill approved by state lawmakers this year does not cover federal agents. governor brown signed a bill aimed at strengthening oversight in response to last year's deadly balcony collapse. six iris students were killed and investigators found the wooden support beams were dry rotted. the bill could give access to information about building contract torsion, that includes public safety records and work related criminal convictions. 6:05 on friday. oakland schools say phone scammers are trying to target

parents with a kidnapping ploy. a spokesperson tells the times that at least twice in the past few weeks parents received calls from someone claiming their children had been kidnapped and demanding payment. in both cases police say the families did the right thing by not blindly complying and calling the schools to confirm their children were safe in class. >> a good swift kick right where it counts is being credited with foiling a robbery attempt in the east bay. emeryville police say three juveniles tried to steal a purse from a mother pushing her baby stroller. that woman kicked one boy in the groin and started to scream and all three boys took off. when officers arrived, police say the same boys had already tarted another woman and managed to steal her phone. officers nabbed two of the boys, took them into custody. they also discovered that stolen phone. detectives hope new photos will lead them to the arsonist behind several fires set at a

days. >> like you said, you don't have to wait on line. you can order another phone. >> i want to know how many of those people are replacing their phones today. >> while they try to clean up safety regulations, we're talking about cleaning up in california. one of the state's largest cleanup efforts is back and hopefully better than ever. california's annual coastal cleanup day is going on. the event is the 31st year. organizers say over that time more than 1 million people have collectively reviewed more than 22 million pounds of garbage from c. beaches and lakes and rivers. state data indicates 36% of the total trash collected has been cigarette butts. that's easily the top on the list. >> a cigarette butt might be a common sight at the beach. but this is a rare sight. dedicated surfers saw that and started swimming for shore. they were waiting for waves at ocean beach yesterday when the shark leaped from the water

behind them. we have the slow motion shot, too. the more experienced surfers saw the distinct white belly and immediately pegged that shark as a juvenile great white. a shark expert says they're right. the camera that caught the rather breach is operated by surf line which has live cameras all around the world. they were expecting fog, not that. >> one of your more important surf reports would be that shark is jumping out of the water. >> nobody cares about the waves. >> look how high it jumped out of the water. >> he may have friends we didn't see. >> you might have fewer friends at the beach this weekend after people see that. >> i know. with the weather heating up, a lot of folks want to head to the coast. one of the places, santa cruz, a spot we think later today should climb into the low 70s with morning clouds, partly cloudy skies before the clouds fill in

again as we head towards the evening. outside right now, a lot of low clouds. from san francisco over to san jose, we've got low clouds into the tri-valley, too. there's the view inside at&t park. right here on nbc bay area, we've got the cardinals taking on the giants. giants baseball 7:00. first pitch at 7:15. light jacket weather will be fine, but with temperatures rising through the weekend around san francisco, it will be t-shirt weather for a couple of those games as we head into the afternoon. there's a look at the low clouds, all the way to the altamont pass this morning. low clouds breaking up around lunchtime and staying on the seashore with valley temperatures approaching the low 90s in a few spots today, maybe not south of san jose this afternoon but certainly by the weekend, upper 60s near san francisco. the north bay with temperatures in the mid 80, upper 80s to low 90s for the afternoon. you see in the seven-day forecast, these temperatures rising. even san francisco may get close to 80 on sunday. the cooling temperatures arrive

monday into tuesday. valley temperatures rising through sunday. livermore, pleasanton can be close to 1 o 0 degrees on sunday. temperatures slowly level off. this is the pattern over the next seven days. no rain in the forecast. instead of throwing a map up with 14 days all over the place, let's look at the weather between now and september 25th. notice how this is holding on. we're not seeing any chances of rain unfortunately. september is typically one of the driest months around the bay area. even by september standards, things are looking unusually dry through the 25th. that seven-day forecast, a scene now that will take us through the weekend, very likely will repeat for the next seven-day forecast as we head into next week. if you're a fan of summer-like weather, this weekend has plenty of it for you. >> i like it a little cooler. that's okay. we'll let summer have one last say. meanwhile, not much of a say for the friday commute except to say, hey, this is a great drive right now. getting a lighter start and an earlier getaway, typical for the

flames and firefighters race to douse those flames as they have to restrain a woman because for her dog it was too late. this is video of police holding her back as she tried to go back into her home to save her dog. the crews say the condo is a total loss. at least two other condos were also affected. in all five people were displaced and the cause of the fire is still under investigation. in her name today but they gathered last night as well. >> reporter: and this happening, chris and sam, while one of the men who allegedly attacked her is now in the main jail in downtown san jose. yesterday deputies with the santa clara county sheriff's office arrested 19-year-old zachary cuen who allegedly beat up 88-year-old flo douglas. cuen and possibly another man broke into douglas' home, beat her and stole some of her belongings. douglas is now in the hospital in critical condition. as you can imagine, this is very frightening for the other people who live in her neighborhood. many of her neighbors met with law enforcement. the sheriff's department reminded them about the importance of neighborhood watch and being aware of any suspicious activity. >> we've got to keep an eye out, we've got to keep an eye out for each other. >> it's about how to watch your back and how to take care of the

elders. >> one woman at last night's meeting believe she saw zachary cuen casing cars in the neighborhood. he was also arrested for robbing another elderly woman last year. a vigil planned for tonight outside flo douglas' home. her neighbors suspected to be there to pay respects. she in the hospital, last report in very, very serious condition. bob redell, "today in the bay." >> keeping positive thoughts for flow. in san francisco a community remains furious and on edge after the beating of a woman in pac heights caught on camera. this is the sketch of the suspect. last month he was seen on video coming out of nowhere and punching that woman in lafayette park. that video has left neighbors stunned. last night they came together in a show of force saying aggressive behavior at this park is only getting worse.

surveillance video. 6:34 right now. the young woman at the center of a police sex abuse scandal is back in the bay area this morning. more charges could be coming for officers. celeste guap is reportedly at an undisclosed location receiving koun selk, this as alameda county prepares charge for seven bay area officers. the contra costa d.a. says the investigation is not complete. we spoke to jasmine's attorney, pamela price, and she says the community deserves to know the truth and the d.a. needs to stop dragging his feet. >> i think mark peterson,ing the district attorney, should explain to the citizens of contra costa county why it has taken more than a year to reach a conclusion to an investigation. >> all kids make bad decisions. all kids do things that their parents are absolutely shocked by. the question is how does the community respond. >> price says jasmine was first

a lake county high school teacher is taking some heat right now after the school district says she lowered a student's grade for not standing during the pledge of allegiance. lower lake high school freshman lailani thompson is a descendant of the pomo native american drive. her home room teacher dropped her grade for not standing because she counted the pledge as participation. >> i was pretty mad when she lowered my grade because i worked hard for it. i turned everything in. i did whatever she can'ted me to do in her class. >> the school superintendent is reviewing the incident and said the teacher will be disciplined for violating the freedom of speech policy, not to mention her first amendment rights. itt technical puss across nation and here in the bay area officially close their doors. it's been a forgone conclusion since august when the department of education barred the for-profit school from enrolling students on any of its 130

welcome back. updating breaking news that restarted covering at 4:30 this morning. >> several homes damaged after flames broke out at a condo complex on the peninsula. pete suratos joining us live in san mateo. pete? >> reporter: good morning sam and kris. the story we've been talking about all morning is one o of the residents displaced. her dog was inside the condo when it caught on fire. that dog is no longer with us.

this condominium complex, fire crews have cleared out. that fire started around 10:45 p.m. you can see in the video that woman being held back police. her dog was inside of that condo. as i mentioned, that dog unfortunately passed away. the fire took place on the 2300 block of ticonderoga drive in san mateo, it was put out in 20 minutes. here is what san mateo fire had to say about the challenges of crews fighting the fire in the attic area. >> the fire burning in the attic space which is made up of this styrofoam insulation, two layers of it with also plywood. we've ended up subsequently going to a fourth alarm to bring in rotations for crews because we've been using -- the firefighters are up there cutting away the roofing material.

were there were no reported injuries at this time. five units were affected altogether. eight people were displaced. the cause of this fire is under investigation. live in san mateo, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> those of us who have pets, no how hard that's going to be for her. in shaig, alum rock neighbors are banding together after an 88-year-old woman was brutally beaten inside her home. they had an emergency meeting last nye in san jose where several hundred people gathered and decided to launch a new version of neighborhood watch. they want everyone to watch out for each other like family. >> we've got to keep an eye out for each other. >> got to watch your back and take care of the elders. >> many of these people will gather for a vigil after the rest of 19-year-old zachary cuen, a parolee who beat and robbed 88 yrd flo douglas last week. we're told she's still in grave condition in the hospital. they'll gather at a vigil outside her home tonight. >> we'll be covering that later
