connected with this weekend's bombings in new york city and in new jersey. this photo was released within the last hour. we are told this man is 28-year-old ahmad khan rahami. he is wanted for his role in that bombing. fbi sent out a wanted poster saying he is a u.s. citizen of afghan deescent. this morning in the community of elizabe elizabeth -- >> there was that overnight blast near a transit station. the bomb squad robot was probing a suspicious backpack called in, reportedly stuffed with improvised explosives. as many as five of them. it exploded while the robot was cutting through some of the wiring. originally, two men spotted that backpack in a garbage can and immediately called police.

there is no word how it got there. across the hudson river in new york city overnight. five people are being questioned by fbi agents in connection to the weekend blast. >> that is in addition to the one being sought. these five were detained because of a traffic stop. the fbi reports the stop was related to saturday's new york city explosion. no one is charged at this point. the pressure cooker bomb exploded in a dumpster in the chelsea neighborhood. 29 people were hurt. fortunately, none of those injuries is serious. four blocks away, people discovered another pressure cooker device. that was dismantled. because it was dismantled, investigators are hoping that bomb will provide valuable clues. coming up in our next half hour, live to new york as this story continues to develop. because of the explosions on the east coast and questions that are still swirling, san francisco police are boosting their presence around the city. you might have noticed extra security at the giants game

yesterday. they will increase visibility of officers in uniform and work with other law enforcement agencies. one person suffered minor burns from a fire yesterday that damaged a part-time day care center. a family lives in that home at grayson court in menlo park. one resident returned shortly after the fire started and burned her hands trying to save some of the rabbits at the residence. fire crews knocked the fire down before flames caused too much damage at the house. an adjacent patio was destroyed. a long-time bay area political activist is being remembered for what she did for the city of san francisco. rose pack died in her home this weekend.

rose pak was stricken with kidney failure last year and became gravely ill. according to a statement from a friend, pak died of natural causes. caltrans says it might be to blame for a freak accident that killed an 82-year-old man on highway 101 in the peninsula. a large piece of metal came crashing through the man's car. bob redell is live in palo alto where this crash happened. caltrans says that piece of metal could have come from one of its trucks. >> good morning to you. caltrans indicates it believes that metal object fell off one of its water trucks early friday afternoon as this truck was traveling on highway 101 between job sites. this is what this object looks like. it appears to be a brass bolt about the size of a baseball about 2 to 3 pounds in weight. louis shaeffer, the 82-year-old man behind the wheel of the van headed north on 101 when that

bolt crashed through his windshield and hit him in the neck. he lost control of his vehicle. slammed in the center divide and came to a stop. shaeffer was pronounced dead at the scene. caltrans offered its deepest condolences to shaeffer and his family and his friends in a statement sent to us. unfortunately these kinds of accidents involving highway debris are not uncommon. between 2011 and 2014 there have been more than 200,000 accidents, crashes, nationwide involving objects in the road or flying off other vehicles. 500 people have been killed as a result. live here in palo alto, bob redell, today in the bay. >> thank you, bob. a devastating scene in the south bay. chp officers arrived to reports of a car crashed into a free off 101. it happened yesterday. as officers tried to see if the driver was okay, a tree crashed

down striking the driver. chp officers were able to escape without injury. witnesses say the driver was speeding before that crash. a toxic algae in the water as state agencies say they are caught off guard how big a problem the blooms are this year. more than 40 lakes and waterways are contaminated. that is the highest count agencies have ever seen. because the algae can cause illness to people and pets especially, the east bay park district says it is being more rigorous posting warning signs. last year a dog died hours after taking a drink from the lake. we are expecting another pretty warm day today. >> let's talk about yesterday. summer heat across the bay area. 86 in san francisco. >> it was hot. >> fire danger was certainly elevated. in fact, there were several fires yesterday. there is this one that happened in the dublin hills. driver could see that smoke from

conversation. >> this is what everyone's talking about. 50 days left until america decides who will be the next president of the united states. both candidates are in battleground states. donald trump tries to separate himself from the democrats. he tweeted out this morning that this bombings, he tried to use the bombings and the stabbing in his favor. he said that the failed obama/clinton policies won't keep us safe. trump's campaign manager says that folks want to move on and talk about security. they want to move on from issues like the birther issue that was a big deal on friday. clinton responded saying we need to support our first responders and pray for our victims here. security guaranteed to be a debate, a talking point at least this week and possibly beyond. the running mate for hillary

clinton, senator tim kaine said that he believes donald trump was dangerous in his rhetoric calling for secret service agents to disarm themselves when they protect hillary clinton. trump made those comments because hillary clinton stance on gun control. senator kaine says it shows indifference whether violence could occur. quinnipiac poll shows hillary clinton is losing support among younger voters. she is just five points over donald trump. in august she was 20 points up. >>. >> south bay election leaders are ramping up activity this weekend. santa clara county registrar of voters will start to train volunteers. in all, roughly 5,000 people are needed to staff polling places around the county. there are still positions open if you want to try. you can earn up to $200 if you

do. the county is looking for bilingual volunteers. now to an investigative unit exclusive. >> a four-month long investigation found often the federal elections commission does nothing. we partnered with nbc in washington, d.c., to go through years of complaints filed with the fec. what we discovered is the average complaint takes almost two years just to come up for a vote. some disputes take longer or are never resolved at all. regulators in california say the fec's inaction is impacting elections throughout this state including where foreign money was spent to illegally influence ballot measure. >> the ballot measure process in california is the people's vote. it is the process of the people. keeping that strong and acting

headquarters. good morning. >> good morning to you. wall street could start monday off on a positive note after markets closed higher last week. apple had the best week in five years. higher in early trading. investors await two big decisions on interest rates this week by the federal reserve and bank of japan. we get fresh data on the housing market, as well. friday the dow fell to 18,123. nasdaq slipping five to 5244. back to you. >> thank you. samsung says its galaxy note 7 will be back in stores wednesday. the phone was the subject of a huge recall but many users have not returned their phone. imagine going without your phone for a couple of days. people would think you had died. only about a few thousand people actually turned in the phone even though they will catch fire. they get too hot when they are charging. do not use it. do not put it on an airplane. get it back.

foul over the plan to expand the newby island landfill. protesters yesterday blocked the gates .. near south bay residents crying foul over plans to fill the newby land fill. the company that operates the land fill hopes to expand the facility and extend its closure date. san jose planners are expected to debate that proposal. some residents say the smell is already overpowering. >> it's a combination of sewage and rotten garbage. >> comes over the city when the wind is right and it just is not going away. >> public services issued this statement in response to the protests. "we worked hard over the years to engage with our neighbors, listen to any concerns and involve the community in a responsible expansion process. ultimately, the land fillies a vital asset for the bay area and its expansion will enable our

community to address their needs for environmental services in the future." >> nbc bay area response as a couple learned a tough lesson about travel insurance. >> bruce and susan booked a trip to italy on british airways. bruce has parkinson's disease so the couple bought travel insurance in case they had a medical emergency and they did. the day before they were scheduled to leave, bruce was rushed to the hospital. he is okay but that caused them to miss the flight they filed a claim thinking they would get reimbursed for their ticket. they were denied because the contract reads you need to cancel 24 hours before the flight. airlines are very firm with cancellation policies we shared the unique story with british airways. the carrier refunded bruce and susan $2,000 for their tickets. in a statement, british airways says, occasionally there are a very special set of

this is the man whose picture is being broadcast around the world as one of the people possibly connected with the weekend bombings in new york city and in new jersey. we are told the fbi has identified him as 28-year-old ahmad khan rahami. he is a u.s. citizen of afghan descent. his last known address is in elizabeth, new jersey. this morning all eyes are on new york city and new jersey as the feds scramble for clues after several weekend bombings. a major development now, that possible suspect has been named what do we know about him? >> right. that's right. this investigation is moving forward very quickly after some developments last night. now within the past hour place

saying they want to speak to that man. his name is ahmad rahami. according to federal officials, they say he is a naturalized u.s. citizen originally born in afghanistan. 28 years old. authorities believe he was living in elizabeth, new jersey. that's relevant because late last night a backpack with bombs in it was discovered in that town, just another incident happening here in the new york metro area over the past three days. in new jersey overnight, another bomb placed in a trash can at the elizabeth train station. it exploded as a bomb robot tried to disarm it. a manhunt under way to find the bomber. today increased security presence is visible across new york city. additional 1,000 state troopers and guards descending on manhattan. a visible show of force after a bomb exploded saturday and left 29 injured and countless others rattled. >> rushed out there within

seconds of the bomb. my ears were still ringing. i noticed screaming, running everywhere. >> the bomb exploded in the chelsea neighborhood. many of the injured were hit with shrapnel. the blast turned the heavy dumpster it was placed near into a mangled pile of metal and blew it more than 100 feet away. >> when you see the amount of damage, we were very lucky there were no fatalities at the time. >> it might have been part of a coordinated attack. just four blocks away, police discovered a pressure cooker with wires and a cell phone attached. that device was dismantled. the same man was spotted in surveillance videos near both devices. who he is and whether he's even involved at all remain a mystery. >> we have a lot more work to be able to say what kind of motivation was behind this. >> investigators are pouring over surveillance videos and bomb fragments, hoping they lead them to the bomber.

>> investigators believe that man spotted in both those videos on 23rd street and 27th street is rahami. that's why they want to speak with him. we are told that the fbi is going through a residence believed to be his in elizabeth. last night a car of interest as they are calling it was pulled over on the verrazano bridge. five people are being questioned from that traffic stop. we are told those people are believed to be members of rahami's family. chris pollone. back to you. >> on a weekend where concerns over terror were raised, a possible link to terrorism in minnesota. we are learning more about that stabbing spree in st. cloud, minnesota, where nine people were attacked. an isis-affiliated group are claiming responsibility. all victims are expected to survive. the group called the attacker a

soldier of the islamic state. the suspect asked at least one victim if he was muslim before stabbing him. an offduty police officer shot and killed the attacker. >> in the wake of the explosions in new york and new jersey and the stabbings in minnesota, san francisco police boosted their presence around the city this weekend. we definitely saw extra security at the giants game yesterday. the department says it will increase the visibility of officers in uniform. also will work with other law enforcement agencies. new this morning, a long shore worker is recovering after two cranes fell yesterday in the port of oakland. this is file of the port and not from yesterday. two cranes fell and one sank in the water. the other landed on the terminal. the bay area news group is reporting a falling container trapped the worker in his vehicle yesterday morning. firefighters rescued that man who went to the hospital after saying he was feeling general body pain.

there's been no update on his condition. honoring the life of a long-time bay area political activist. san francisco civic leader rose pak has died. pak was well known being the voice of the china town community. today in the bay is live in san francisco. pak meant so much to so many people. really did have a powerful voice in san francisco. >> that's exactly right. she is considered a political heavyweight despite never holding political office. the city what they are doing is -- you can't see it here, they are flying their flags at half staff in her honor. she was the voice of the china town community. that was the scene yesterday as the body was taken away from her china town apartment where she was found dead due to natural

causes. a street is named after the long-time civic leader. she was considered a power broker for the chinese community in san francisco. coming to the city in the 1960s, becoming one of the leading voices in the community for decades. we saw politicians past and present at her apartment yesterday. they had this to say about her legacy. >> she was tough as nails. she and i fought like cats and dogs, but at the end of the day i loved her and we became friends. >> one of its main sparks, rose perfected the art of public advocacy on behalf of issues. she had zero evidence of any personal gain. >> pak's impact on city politics culminated with the election of our current san francisco mayor ed lee who said, this is a great loss to the city as a whole and the chinese community in

crashed after that piece of metal hit him in the neck. a joint investigation discovered a caltrans water truck was driving between job sites at the time of the accident. rail safety is the lesson for gunderson high school students today. september is national rail safety months. hundreds of gunderson students ride light rail every day. in an effort to promote safety on and around the light rail, students came up with their own safety pledge,ç helping classmates and fellow students. >> there was an emergency rescue over the weekend at a place where a lot of folks come to have a drink and relax and watch the water. many of them were watching this. san francisco firefighters had their hands full when two calls came in from the cliff house. a man was actually stuck there in between the crashing waves and on top the cliff house at

the top of the cliff you could see how dangerous that spot was. it all played out yesterday. at the same time, a dog wandered down the steep embankment and got stuck. it was a corgi, a breed not typically known for its athletic prowess. they are stocky. the dog couldn't get back up. rescue teams worked to bring the man and dog to safety at the same time and made for a very happy reunion. >> that made me happy. the dog was mellow and happy and had a big crowd hearing her or him on. >> lots of love for the corgi. both rescues, especially the corgi drew dozens of onlookers. >> a nice day but hot day today. what about yesterday? 86 in san francisco. fire danger is high. there were several fires yesterday. this one is in the dublin hills. drivers could see the smoke from 680.

county -- a memorial service was held in belmont in honor of all the fallen public safety workers in san mateo county, a memorial service was held in belmont. this was at the cunningham chapel. representatives from public safety agencies read aloud the names of their fallen comrades. t they showed off their skills. fans lining up for the gymnastics champions. inspiring gymnasts were eager to see their idols. the final five was sort of a homecoming. simone biles and all those girls were there. >> look at this. this was traffic stopped in the

wells fargo will go before a senate investigative committee tomorrow. john stumff acknowledges his company set up bank accounts for more than a million customers. he said the tell horse did the actual fraud were to blame. wells fargo fired more than 5,000 workers and paid the biggest fine of its type in banking history. also this week, the bankers bankers get to work. the federal open markets committee will start a two-day meeting tomorrow to determine whether to raise interest rates. every time we get some bit of economic data showing they should raise rates, we get other bit of economic data showing they should not. donald trump is campaigning as a populist, yet another economic group says this morning his plans would hurt his own voters most. the peterson group says trump's trade policies would cause a recession and cost 5 million

jobs. this comes back on a moody's report that says trump would cost 3.5 million jobs and a two-year recession. last week, a trump presidency would cost the u.s. economy $1 trillion. billionaire mark zuckerberg said over the weekend he and his wife dr. priscilla chan are getting ready to share something we've been working on for a couple of years. big week ahead. i haven't the faintest idea. it's not facebook if dr. chan is involved. they'll talk about their robotic house. i don't think it's a baby. >> they wouldn't be working on that for years. >> they have a 1-year-old so i'm mystified. >> maybe has to do with their charitable trust. that's what i think. we'll create an office pool. 5:49. serious fragile cease-fire
