and new jersey. he is described as a u.s. citizen of afghan descent. his last known address was elizabeth, new jersey. >> a lot of breaking news in new jersey. heavily-armed fbi agents were seen storming a fried chicken restaurant in the last couple of hours. not far from where an explosion happened early this morning near a new jersey train station. that blast happened while a bomb squad was examining a suspicious backpack with the robot. authorities say the backpack had as many as five explosives. two men found it in a garbage can no word how it got there. that is one of three that happened over the weekend. right now, five people are being questioned by fbi agents in connection with those blasts. >> those people were detained following a traffic spot on the verrazano bridge. the stop was related to saturday's new york city explosion. no one has been charged at this point. the pressure cooker bach

exploded in a dumpster in the chelsea neighborhood in manhattan and left 29 people injured and countless others rattled. >> rushed out there within seconds of the bomb. my ears were still ringing. i noticed screaming, running, glass everywhere. investigators are hoping the impact bomb will provide them with clues. a pipe bomb exploded in new jersey, but nobody was injured. because of the explosions on the east coast and questions that are still unanswered, san francisco police is boosting its presence around the city. there was extra security at the giants game yesterday. sfpd is going to increase visibility of officers in uniform and to work with other law enforcement agencies. in the next half hour, a live report from new york city as the investigation continues to unfold. new details on a freak

accident that killed a driver on highway 101. a large piece of metal crashed through the windshield of an elderly man's car, killing him. we know where that piece of metal may have come from and what it is. bob redell is live with a statement from caltrans. >> that metal object fell off one of its water trucks early friday afternoon on highway 101 as the driver of the truck was traveling between work sites. it appears to be a brass bolt, the size of a baseball, about 2 or 3 pounds in weight. louis shaeffer was behind the wheel of a van when that bolt crashed through his windshield and hit him in the neck. he lost control of the vehicle

and was pronounced dead at the scene. caltrans offered its deepest condolences to his family and friends. between 2011 and 2014, there had been more than 200,000 crashes involving objects on the road or flying off other vehicles. in those crashes, 500 people were killed. >> this morning honoring the life of a long-time bay area political activist. rose pak died. pak was the voice of the china town community in the city, as well as playing a significant role bringing ed lee into office. she was found dead inside her san francisco apartment sunday. she was stricken with kidney cancer last year.

there was no official word on her cause of death. family members said it was of natural causes. yesterday her friends and former political allies gathered outside her apartment in tears. >> one of its main sparks, rose perfected the art of public advocacy on baf of issues. she had zero evidence of any personal gain. >> we heard from former mayor willie brown. ed lee said this is a great loss to the city as a whole and the chinese community, in particular. a community that rose served, supported and fought for, often fiercely her entire adult life. lee ordered city hall to be lit in white in her honor and flags to be lowered to half staff. this morning a long shore worker is recovering after two cranes felt yesterday at the port of oakland. this is file video of the port

not from yesterday. port spokesmen is confirming two cranes fell and one sank into the water. the other landed on the terminal. bay area news group reports a falling container trapped the worker yesterday morning. firefighters rescued the man who went to the hospital after saying he was feeling general body pain. no update on his condition. a devastating season in the south bay as officers arrived to reports of a car that crashed into a tree off highway 101 near the blossom hill road exit. as officers were trying to check on the driver to make sure the driver was okay, that tree crashed down striking the driver. officers were able to escape from the tree without injury. witnesses say the driver was speeding before the crash. south bay residents crying foul over the plan to expand the newby island land fill. protesters blocking the gates near interstate 880.

san francisco firefighters had their hands full when two calls came in from the area of the cliff house. a man was stuck between the crashing waves below and the top of the cliff. there you see him there. at the same time, this little dog wandered down a steep embankment and got stuck. they rescued both making for a very happy reunion. >> both rescues drew dozens of onlookers. if we care about one thing, it's dogs. >> right. we are happy that man was safely rescued. 6:14 on your monday morning. rise of toxic algae in the water. state agencies say they are caught off guard how large a

problem blooms have become this year. about 11 are in the bay area. that is the highest count agencies have ever seen. because the algae can cause illness to people and to pets, the east bay park district is being more rigorous about posting warning signs. last year a dog died hours after taking a drink from the lake. one byproduct of the rise to addiction to social media. it can be very real especially for young people. social media, including the number of likes you get and comments you receive activate the reward center of your brain almost like a drug. it can boost dopemine levels which work as a pleasure level. withdrawal can affect people when they are not compulsively checking social media. >> people start to feel isolated, start to feel depressed if they're not using some sort of social media

rushed to the hospital. he's okay but that caused them to miss the flight the next day. they filed the claim with their travel insurance company. they were denied. the contract reads you need to cancel 24 hours before the flight. airlines are firm with cancellation policies. we shared the couple's unique story with british airways. the carrier refunded bruce and susan $2,000 for their tickets. british airways said, occasionally, there are very special set of circumstances that require review, and in this case we are pleased that we are able to resolve the issue to the customer's satisfaction. lesson here, you need to read the fine print when buying travel insurance. you don't always get what you think you're paying for. if you have a consumer complaint, call us.

involving four cars. once you get on to the bridge, things do look good. smooth sailing. >> thank you. we go back now to breaking news. just released overnight, the photo of the man authorities say is connected to weekend bombings in both new york and new jersey. the broadcast in manhattan left dozens injured and many more rattled. that explosion is one of many that rocked new york city and new jersey over the weekend. chris pollone monitoring the investigation unfolding by the minute. that includes another explosive device found in new jersey. >> that's right. five, to be exact. in the last hour the nypd and fbi announced that there is a person they need the public's help in finding they want to question him in connection with all these incidents. ahmad rahami, 28 years old, possibly lives in elizabeth, new jersey. he's a u.s. citizen originally

born in afghanistan. he is armed and dangerous. why that's significant about elizabeth, new jersey? around 1:30 this morning, some men discovered a backpack loaded with pipes and wires. police found there were five explosive devices in that bag. investigators believe that the incidents here in new york and new jersey are connected. in new jersey, another bomb placed in a trash can at the elizabeth train station exploded as a bomb robot tried to disarm it. a manhunt under way to find the bomber. today an increased security presence visible across new york city. additional 1,000 state troopers and national guard soldiers joining with the nypd. a visible show of force after a bomb exploded saturday. >> rushed out there within seconds of the bomb. my ears were still ringing. i noticed screaming, running, blasts everywhere. >> the bomb exploded in the

chelsea neighborhood. many of the injured were hit with shrapnel. all released from the hospital. it turned the heavy dumpster into a mangled pile of metal. >> you see the amount of damage, we really were very lucky there were no fatalities at the time. >> it might have been part of a coordinated attack. just four blocks away, police discovered a pressure cooker with wires and cell phone attached. that device has been dismantled. law enforcement sources say it appears the same man was spotted in surveillance videos near both devices. who he is and whether he's involved at all remain a mystery. >> we have more work to do to be able to say what kind of motivation was behind this. >> investigators are pouring over surveillance videos and bomb fragments, hoping they lead them to the bomber. several developments happening at the same time. investigators believe that person seen in the video is

rahami at the 23rd and 27th street locations. police stopped a car last night, questioned five people. the mayor says those five people provided valuable information about rahami. it is believed those are members of his family. the fbi is searching a building in elizabeth right now as we speak. >> the very latest from new york, thank you very much. we are going to continue following the investigation throughout the morning. you can look for a special live edition of the "today" show starting at 7:00. for all updates stay with "today in the bay." we are learning more about a stabbing spree at a mall in minnesota, where nine people were attacked. an isis affiliated group is claiming responsibility. that happened saturday night in the small city of st. cloud. victims all expected to survive. that group called the attacker a

soldier of the islamic state. police say the suspect asked at least one victim if he was muslim before stabbing him. an offduty police officer shot and killed the suspect. back in the bay area san francisco is remembering a political icon today. the city is honoring the life of long-time bay area political activist rose pak. >> pete joins us live from city hall where flags are at half staff with more on the considerable impact she had on the city. >> good morning. rose pak was considered a power broker when it came to politics here in san francisco. city hall flags are at half staff. she was long considered to be the voice of san francisco's china town community. those sirens were the scene yesterday at the body of rose pak was taken away from her

community, in particular. a community rose served, supported and fought for, often fiercely her entire adult life. rose pak had been battling health issues. she had a kidney transplant earlier this year in china. she passes away leaving a lasting legacy at the age of 68. we have new information regarding a freak accident that killed the driver on highway 101. caltrans says a large piece of metal that crashed through the windshield was an 82-year-old man behind the wheel killing him might have come from one of its water trucks. the deadly crash happened friday. louis shaeffer crashed after a piece of metal came through his windshield hitting him in the neck. a joint investigation by the chp and caltrans discovered that a caltrans water truck was driving between job sites at the time of the accident. new this morning, one person suffered minor burns in a fire

yesterday that damaged a home day care center on the peninsula. the family lived at that home, but one of the residents returned shortly after the fire started and burned her hand while trying to save some rabbits. an adjacent patio was destroyed. the home served as a day care center during the week. parents will be scrambling today. we are expecting a pretty nice day. let's talk about yesterday which was hot across the bay area. 86 in san francisco. fire danger elevated as there were several fires yesterday. this one in dublin hills. no structures were burned. firefighters have to watch that area overnight to make sure the fire doesn't flare up. there are a pair of grass fires in san jose. one started behind the lowes. other burning along the san jose creek. both were by homeless

overnight blast near a new jersey transit station. the bomb squad robot was probing a suspicious backpack stuffed with as many as five improvised explosives inside when it exploded while the robot was cutting through some wires. originally two men spotted the backpack in a garbage can and called police. no word on who might have dropped it there. the today show will bring you live special reports at 7:00. here at home, because of the explosions in new york and new jersey, the san francisco police is boosting its presence around the city. there's extra security at the giants game yesterday. the sfpd is increasing visibility of officers in uniform and working with other local law enforcement agencies. the "today" show will monitor the developing story on the investigation out of new york and new jersey. we'll have that live in a couple of minutes at 7:00 a.m. >>. >> send the kids off to school, make sure they are hydrated and
