seattle up 24-3 at the half. 49ers just couldn't get anything going offensively. just 254 yards of total offense. 4 for 15 on third downs. gabbert. 119 yards passing, 1 interception. carlos hyde. he did finish with over 100 yards but most of that coming in garbage time. the offense just could not get it going. they looked flustered. even when they thought they had a good play, the ball would inexplicably bounce into the wrong hands. so we go to the third quarter. a scary moment for seattle. wilson taken down by eli harold. wilson was slow to get up. he left the game with a leg injury. wilson's going to get an mri. tomorrow. wilson seattle hopes is okay. seattle okay on this day. they go on to win 37-18.

here's a look at the latest n.l. playoff picture. dodgers clinch it beating rockies. g-men are tied for second in the final wild card spot with st. louis. new york met vats one-game advantage. the miami marlins continue to mourn the loss of all-star jose fernandez, who died in a boating accident early this morning. fernandez was one of three men killed when the boat they were in crashed into the rocks off miami beach. fernandez emigrated from cuba as a teenager with his family and just became a united states citizen last week. just last week, he announced he and his girlfriend were expecting a baby girl. jose fernandez, gone way too soon. he was just 24 years old. more sad news to report. arnold palmer, a seven-time masters champion and arguably the most beloved figure in golf, died today from complications with heart problems. no one did more to popularize the sport than palmer. in the '50s and '60s he brought

golf to the masses, taking it out of the country clubs and into the mainstream. he made golf cool. he grew up in latrobe, pennsylvania, and was proud of that fact. in a career that spanned six decades he won 62 tour pga titles and the the masters four times. in 2004 he was awarded the presidential medal of freedom. eight years later he was honored with the congressional gold medal. arnold palmer, the king, dead at 87.

now after this, is this more today the demonstration of what this "d" will be like throughout the season? >> i hope so. i think everyone, all the fans, hope so. two games, giving up over 1,000 yards in defense last two weeks. and this week they stood up big. it was good to see sean smith, attack position freeing a you bring in from kansas city, he played big today. interceptions, on the linebackers, you saw him guard tight end, sean smith was all over the field today. he made his presence known. blocked passes, breakups. they were good defensively. you like to see these guy dozen that. that's hopefully a sign of thins to come in the future. >> when you look the a this team, offensively one of the things carr said is i could have been better, but they put up some big numbers. do you have a feeling that now the raiders go out there and think, last year they were much improved this year they just beat this team, they're going to have a huge test playing the ravens in baltimore.

is that going to be the real test or do you have the sense that this team is much improved? >> you know, you've got the real test in week one. you went and played against arguably one of the greatest quarterbacks in the league, drew brees. the following week you played against another good quarterback in atlanta. these next two weeks are physical teams. the baltimore ravens, tennessee titans. they want to pound the ball, run the ball, play action. you get to see them another week against the physical team in harbaugh's team, a physical team. yes, you've seen a good gauntlet of all the teams they're going to play. i think right now you're getting to see the raiders, who they are. >> they won with murray only rushing for 37 or 40 yards. that is a good sign that they can win without him having huge rushing numbers? >> it was a good sign, they were able to be diversified. all the running backs stood up and made plays, defense made plays. carr took shots down the field. yeah, they got some turnovers. should have capitalized and got more scores. what we like to see is carr and cooper going down on the field. you saw crabtree, the big two.

this is a team, this is a team is going to continue to grow. they're nowhere near where they need to be if they're trying to make the playoffs. >> right now looks line the best team in the bay area, that's for sure. underway in san francisco after two tourists were attacked a hate crime investigation under way in san francisco after two tourists were attacked because of their sexuality. tonight the victims talk about their ordeal. also tonight, remembering a golf legend. a look back on the life of arnold palmer and the impact that he made off the course as well as on. first, a battle to contain the flames. a wildfire burns in sonoma county and forces evacuations.

the news starts right now. good evening. i'm terry mcsweeney. >> i'm peggy bunker. thank you for joining us. more than two dozen homes evacuated right now as the hot, dry weather fuelling a wildfire this one burning in sonoma county. the fire broke out about 11:00 this morning about ten miles east of cloverdale near big geysers road. we've been following the story and bringing in new pictures here from viewers and also our crews on the ground. we'll bring you the latest information when we get it. . >> also another wildfire, this one sending a plume of smoke into the sky over santa rosa. a viewer tweeting out, this picture of a fire. firefighters say flames broke out at about 2:00. crews were quickly able to contain that fire. only seven akers were burned. no homes or buildings were damaged. also no word on what caused it in the first place. fire concerns obviously across the bay area. temperatures going to get even hotter tomorrow.

meteorologist anthony slaughter joining us with the latest on this very early fall heat wave. >> we've got very hoot temperatures. highs today anywhere in the 90s across most of the bay area. i want to focus in on parts of north bay where we were talking about fires early letter wide receiver i had winds earlier this morning and this afternoon offshore. it's gusty. winds gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour in this specific location from ukiah, near cloverdale, near santa recess sa. what will happen the next 24 hours is winds will shift. notice by monday they're going to be more onshore. so that's going to bring in cooler weatheweather. but we still do have a heat advisory in effect for tomorrow. at the coast temperatures similar to today, 80s and 90s around the bay, mid-90s, inland could top out near 100. a cooling trend headed our way, see you in ten minutes. >> for continuing coverage head to our website, nbcbayarea.com.

you can track the forecast in your neighborhood. also check out the weather on our free nbc bay area app. san francisco police are investigating it as a hate crime. two men visiting from new york city say they were simply at a mcdonald's when three men jumped out of a minivan yelling anti-gay slurs and pepper sprayed them. marianne favro talked to the two men and joins us live in san francisco with their story. >> reporter: the attack happened at 9:00 last night here in the parking lot of this mcdonald's on the corner of golden gate avenue and fillmore. the two victims told me they were stunned that they were targeted in a city known for acceptance. neil frias and jeff white were grabbing something to eat at mcdonald's last night when a minivan with five men in it pulled up. the door opened and three men got out. they yelled anti-gay comments at jeff and then neal told them he

didn't want any trouble. >> then the one guy comes up and he like looks like he's going to take swing at me. he pulls out a can of mace and sprays me across the eyes. a second one sprays me. a third one gets out of the van and starts spraying him. then he sits there and i just fall to the ground. i can't see anything. i'm yelling "call the police, call the police." >> the two men were in town to visit the folsom street fair today, a well-known leather-themed street party. police say they're investigating the attack as a hate crime and they have turned the case over to a special investigations unit. they're also looking for anyone who may have captured something on a cell phone last night or who may have seen something here last night in this parking lot around 9:00 to call police. police are also looking to see whether mcdonald's has surveillance video that could be helpful in this investigation. police say the suspects are described at five african-american males and they were driving a blue minivan.

i also spoke to san francisco county supervisor mr. weiner as well as the police tonight. we'll have their comments coming up at 11:00. he was one of the most popular athletes in the world. helped turn a country club sport into a worldwide obsession for the masses. arnold palmer died today at age 87 because of heart problems. palmer was the son of a greenskeeper who ended up being nicknamed the king. his hollywood good looks and powerful yet unorthodox swing made him a golf superstar. fans crowded the fairways in droves and came to be known as arnie's army. many who couldn't watch him on the course in person did so in in their living rooms in the '50s and '60s. palmer helped make golf the tv sport it is today. his popularity grew and companies wanted arnie pitching

their products. >> arnie said, you'll like it, the tractor will like it. >> reporter: nicknamed the king, he loved to take chances on the course saying, "you must play boldly to win." and win he did. seven majors, 95 professional victories, including the champions tour, a venture he helped jump start in 1980. in 2012 he was awarded the congressional gold medal, recognizing his contributions as golfer and philanthropisphilant. arnold palmer will be remembered as one of the greatest players to ever pick up a club. a blue collar guy from the small steel town who transcended his sport, becoming a hero to many. >> palmer's golfing empire includes golf schools, golf equipment and clothing lines. he designed more than 200 courses across the world. the sports world also mourning the death of another athlete, jose fernandez, star pitcher for the miami marlins,

killed in a boating accident overnight near miami. two other people on board the boat were also killed. authorities say speed was a factor in the crash but they have not found evidence of alcohol or illegal substances. fernandez was 24 years old. the san francisco giants reacted with a statement reading, we are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of jose fernandez. our hearts go out to jose's family and the marlins organization. >> so sad. expecting a first child. a terrible story. still ahead on this special edition, some are calling it the super bowl of politics and they are expecting the ratings to match the super bowl. the first presidential debate on nbc bay area. sparks are flying over the candidates and who they've invited as their guests.

between hillary clinton and donald trump in the physical pittial debay of the election season. sparks are already flying over who the two candidates have invited as their guests to the debate. jennifer johnson has story from washington. >> reporter: donald trump is at his trump tower home prepping for monday night's debate after meeting with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu. hillary clinton prepares near her chappaqua home. clinton has stirred things up inviting mark cuba to sit in the front row, prompting trump to tweet saturday that he might ask gennifer flowers, who had an affair with bill clinton, to attend. >> mr. trump was putting them on notice that we can certainly invite guests that may get into the head of hillary clinton. but we have not invited her formally and we don't expect her to be there as a guest of the trump campaign. >> reporter: the clinton camp denies it's trying to rattle trump. >> no, i think mark cuba is one of the business leaders who was never involved in partisan politics, who's endorsed hillary because he thinks she'll do

==take vo== hundreds of firefights a we return to a coverage of fire in sonoma county forcing evacuations right now. hundreds of firefighters are here helping with the saw mill fire tonight. it has grown to about 1,500 akers. we're told the area they're trying to get into and around is remote. a water tender rolled over trying to get there. nobody hurt in that accident. the fire started about 11:00 this morning east of clover dale. more than two dozen homes evacuated as well as a geothermal plant that is already offline. air tankers making passes over the burned steep terrain. earlier there was a red flag warning and the heat is only making matters worse. red s red cross has opened an evacuation center for those who need it. >> you wonder how weather could contribute or help out these situations. any relief? >> no, unfortunately. they had gusty winds today. across the mountains, gusts up

to 30 miles per hour. it's going to stay hot tomorrow. it's not going to be as windy but heat is definitely going to be a factor as we move through the next 24 hours. our highs, notice the asterisks, that denotes record heat. san jose, new record high today of 97 degrees. even san francisco up to 92. the airport did see a record but downtown, 92 officially not a record. but still hot. 99 in napa today. 98 in santa rosa. so right now we've got clear skies out there. fill 77 degrees in san francisco. still 80 on the peninsula. we've got warm spots out there as you head into the evening hours. even right now as we get into the 10:00 hour. tomorrow, 102 for the tri-valley. 92 for the peninsula. 100 degrees for the south bay. similar to what we saw today. unfortunately we have a spare the air alert in effect for tomorrow just like what we saw for today. here's your high temperatures for monday. 98 degrees for san jose. 100 for cupertino and morgan hill. cool spots like half moon bay,

74. even in san francisco, after 90s today, you'll see a good mix of upper 80s and low 90s again. heat advisory remains in effect for the entire bay area, including the motor bay again for tomorrow, where we had fires. another day of dangerous heat. 100 degrees for santa rosa tomorrow. 99 for walnut creek: 101 tomorrow for dansville. make sure you dress appropriately. light and loose-fitted clothing tomorrow. high pressure is the culprit, sinking air warms quickly. things are really about to change as we get into october, which begins next weekend by the way. so here we put the maps into motion. notice high pressure slides off to the south over the next couple of days. that's going to allow an area of low pressure to build in as we head towards thursday, friday, saturday, sunday of next weekend. this thing right now does not seem to bring us any rain. but it's going to be very close call and temperatures are really going to cool off. we're talking about the 20-degree drop in some locations. inland tomorrow still hot, 100.

heat advisory in full effect. we get rid of that heat advisory for tuesday but still hot. temperatures cool off by next weekend into the 70s. san francisco we'll see temperatures into the 70s. by wednesday back into the 60s. a couple of days, we'll see temperatures dropping about 20 degrees. so hold on, relief is coming. >> you're talking about maybe rain, kind of a close call. there was talk of it earlier. i know it was a couple weeks out. >> this is getting to october. as we move toward the first full week of october, not this week, in two weeks we could be talking about rain. two weeks out, the computer models are iffy, we'll watch that. >> someone who does not have air conditioning, i'm looking forward to the cool-down. >> me too. >> if it can get here sooner i'd appreciate that. >> i'll do what i can. >> thank you so much. we have more coming up tonight on "nbc bay area news" at 11:00, full coverage of the saw mill fire. we're watching that situation closely as it continues
