"today in the bay" continues right now. a good monday morning, i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. i spent yesterday trying to pull out the fall wardrobe only to wear a summer dress again. >> 60s and 70s and we've got numbers in the 90s. bay area wide including san francisco, we've got a heat advisory where some could approach 105 degrees. interesting map is showing how the bay area is hotter than las vegas, phoenix and tucson.

>> most is predictable. fremont extra slowing. southbound 880 recovering. it rippled back from an earlier crash. we had this starting and i thought we would get better recovery than we had. add another five to seven minutes for your drive. 680 standard through pleasanton and fremont. san jose, the south bay build kicking in for 101. getting ready for that morning commute. we are following breaking news out of houston. police say they have shot a suspect after an active shooter situation. officials say it unfolded in a shopping plaza in the southwest part of the city. several people were hurt and are being taken to area hospitals. no reports of any other suspect. we are keeping an eye on our nbc affiliate in houston as we gather more information. we'll bring it to you.

these are live pictures from the scene where we know several officers responded. we still see the shooter situation all cordoned off. 6:02. another story developing at this hour where evacuations remain in effects in sonoma county. firefighters trying to tackle the sawmill fire. last night grew to more than 1,500 acres. burning about 10 miles into clover dale. the homes have burned. right now more than 30 homes are evacuated. there's also a geothermal power plant in that area. the facilities offline. red cross set up an evacuation center. more than 400 firefighters are on the front line. it is 10% contained. we'll stay on top of this developing story. sharon will join us with a live report at 6:30. decision 2016. the stage is nearly set for

nbcbayarea.com to get the latest, stream the event. and for coverage throughout the course of the day. >> it is 6:03. a disturbing crime in san francisco. police are trying to track down several men who pepper sprayed and yelled slurs at two gay tourists. kris sanchez cracking the latest. we heard this first hand from the victims. >> they couldn't believe it. these are two new yorkers who came to san francisco. they never expected to be the victim of a hate crime here of all places. the two friends came to town for the fulsome street fair and spent saturday gearing up for that leather-themed party. it was about 7:30 saturday night when they were outside a mcdonald's restaurant on golden gate avenue that their san francisco experience soured. as one man bent down to tie his shoe, a minivan with five men pulled up. that's when they say three men jumped out shouting homophobic

slurs telling them they were destroying family values. >> then the one guy comes up. looks like he is about to take a swing and pulls out mays and sprays me across the eye. a second one sprays me and a third one starts spraying him. he just sits there and i fall to the ground. i can't see anything. i'm yelling, call the police, call the police. >> lungly, one woman did. police are investigating this attack as a hate crime. they are trying to track down the blue minivan. they are between their late 20s and early 30s. two gay women were attacked during this year's pride activities. san francisco police are definitely taking this seriously. kris sanchez, today in the bay. >> unsettled trend there. sheriff's deputies in san mateo

county are searching for a man for trying to lure a boy into his car. 12-year-old boy was walking along when an elderly man asked him to repeatedly come inside the car if he wanted a ride. the boy threatened to call police. suspect is described as a white man in his 70s driving a newer model silver sedan. happening today, the chp and santa rosa police are joining emergency crews to accept straight important rescue techniques. cars have become submerged in water off the highway. two north bay communities are struggling after accidents took the lives of young children. on august 23rd, two sisters died when the truck their mother was in crashed into the russia river. two later two sisters drowned when the car overturned into the

petaluma river. >> an update on the sinking luxury high rise in san francisco. today independent soil engineers will begin installing devices to monitor soil around the millennial tower. it has sunk more than engineers expected. now the city in the high rise scrambling for a fix. the golf world this morning mourning the loss of a legend. arnold palmer died. >> legend does apply in this case. look at the memorial for palmer where his personal parking spot sits. you see the candles, pictures and flowers. palmer helped to launch that station back in the mid '90s. he died yesterday in pittsburgh, pennsylvania from heart complications. arnold palmer won 90 tournaments. seven majors, four of them the

6:12 monday morning. city leaders lifted a cure due in place ever since demonstrations began over the deadly police shooting of keith lamont scott. security was extra tight at yesterday's carolina panthers football game. more than 100 protesters gathered, and demonstrators gathered as the game played. >> police released dash cam and body cam. neither proved definitive answers whether scott was holding a gun. renters, no matter how crazy it sounds, it's true. san jose and san francisco made the list of 10 largest declines in rents last month. that is according to this month's national apartment

report. one bedroom rents fell 12% byç more than $300. that was the nation's second largest apartment price decline. san francisco rents fell 6% or $250 for a one bedroom. that was the seventh largest decline. oakland rents bucked the trend rising slightly. new home sales, figures for august will be released later today. a late summer surge is expected there. that news comes on the heels of existing home sales figures down for the second consecutive month. higher home prices and not enough inventory for sale kept would-be buyers at bay. the northeast region had a monthly increase in closings because there is more inventory there. 6:14 right now. bright high intensity l.e.d. speed lights may be the rage in american cities but it may impact people's health. a recent warn buying the american medical association has critics growing more concerned. the bright lights have been

linked to reduced sleep time and caution of harmful effects on wildlife, especially nocturnal animals. l.e.d. lights are up to 50% more efficient than older style lights. could be a hitten up side to california's traffic problems. state energy commission is struggling whether crystaling can be used to make electricity from energy used by vehicles driving on the roads. scientists have proven technology works. when compressed, these crystals generate energy. the idea is to find out whether they could produce enough electricity to be cost effective if they were installed underneath california's road. we were talking about fires in the bay area floods in iowa as residents are preparing for what could be historic floods this week. hundreds of sandbags. volunteers helped to remove

hundreds of seats from the iconic paramount theater which suffered $ 16 million worth of damage in the last flood. others are closing in preparation of flash flooding. amidst all of this, destruction, story of hope emerges. it has to do with that deer. an iowa man risked his life to jump into a swollen river to help the deer that was clearly struggling. heavy rains pounded the river. the small deer was no match for that powerful current. eventually, it got stuck near a bridge. witnesses knew it would tire and drown if someone didn't jump in. one man with the help of people nearby tethered himself to a rail and got into the water with a life jacket on and lifted him up from the water. eventually released the deer to nearby woods. that's more than a disney store. >> such a community effort there. >> come together.

>> that's right. i just spoke with the public information officer out here a few minutes ago. the containment is up to 20%, possibly better than that. they expected low humidity but it was higher than expected. that is the good news. you can see the evacuation center is closed because the evacuees basically found places to stay. that is good news. there is a sign saga vac'ses, contact the red cross if they show up here did he penning how the fire goes today. the sawmill fire started yesterday. structures were threatened and firefighters evacuated about 20 to 30 residents. no buildings burned and no one was injured. >> the geo plant is owned by calpine. it supplies the power and also had systems in place that supply

water for santa rosa. none of that infrastructure was impacted. the power plant itself was immediately threatened and evacuations were put around the plant itself. >> the hot weather today is expected to be a factor. fortunately again they are saying containment is looking good. there is going to be a meeting today at 7:00 to update all the firefighters around here. about 500 firefighters throughout the bay area are here to help battle this blaze. 6:36. we are following a developing story out of berkeley where police say a man and woman have been shot. it happened last night at king street and alcatraz avenue in south berkeley. two victims are expected to survive. police continue to search for the suspect. the latest shooting comes during a violent time as police

increased patrols due to several shootings. a warning to people of san jose to watch out for a campaign imposter. on the madison nguyen's facebook page say people have complained about a man knocking on their door starting arguments with them. he says he is part of nguyen's campaign but the campaign denies that. volunteers are given campaign materials to hand out and this man does not have any handouts. 6:37. taking action as luxury high rise in san francisco continues to sink. today independent engineers will monitor the soil around the millennium tower. bob redell is live. drilling is about to get under way. >> right behind us on the corner of mission and fremont where the developers of the millennium tower hired a soil engineering firm to come here and drill holes.

you can see the pavement in front of the tower. there's been serious settling of the dirt. they will drill holes where that white circle has been marked into the pavement. drill holes into the mud and put devices to monitor the soil movement. that will probably take a few weeks to get these devices in around the different areas. you see this firm getting ready to dig the first hole. this tower, 58-story tower here at the corner of fremont and mission. since construction in '09 has sunk 16 inches and tilted two inches. more than engineers were inspecting. the tower could sink as much as another 16 inches. the developer blames the sinking on the construction of the transit terminal taking place next door. the developer argues that

project drained the soil under the tower causing it to tilt and lean. the tower is leaning to the north and west, away from the terminal project. the people behind the terminal project blame the problems on the tower on a defective foundation. since developers did not anchor the piles into bedrock 200 feet below. the builder insisted their foundation is state-of-the-art and sits on top of 1,000 piles driven 80 feet down into bay mud. they also had a few experts tell them this tower, in spite of its tilting and leaning is 100% safe. they will start drilling here any moment. the developers will hold a news conference later this morning at 9:00 outside their tower. bob redell, today in the bay. >> thanks, bob.

hitting charlotte. this time activists protesting outside panthers' football stadium. >> it is a developing story. sara, we are learning city leaders lifted that midnight curfew. >> they have. it's been a calm morning here in charlotte after a weekend of peaceful protests, much different than what we saw last week after the shooting death of keith scott. the city leaders decided to lift that curfew, that midnight to 6:00 a.m. curfew. there is still a heightened sense of security, especially concerns around the carolina panthers game yesterday. hundreds taking to the street for a sixth night after the fatal police shooting of 32-year-old keith scott. there are security concerns at the panthers' game. the national guard kept an eye on things at the stadium there. the city declared the game an extraordinary event giving officers more leeway to search fans in and out of the city.

they arrested one man with a loaded gun, but no other arrests. on the field we saw political statements. cam newton was wearing a martin luther king justice t-shirt. demonstrators took a knee during the national anthem. over the weekend also, calls for the release of dash cam video and body cam video from police. those were released. they answered the calls that were the main reasons protesters had an issue with. came a day after the family of keith scott released cell phone video. there are still many questions about the video. we'll see what happens as the investigation continues. so far, noç protests planned today or in the coming days. sara rosario, back to you. >> things will calm down. 6:46. happening today, the man accused in the deadly shooting rampage at a washington state mall friday night will appear in

court. 20-year-old arcan cetin was arrested late saturday night as he walked down the street less than 30 miles away from the shooting scene. he is accused of opening fire in burlington, killing five people. police believe he is the lone suspect and the motive remains unclear. governor jerry brown vetoed a bill that would have paid for the response of san bernardino shooting with state funds. a new bill would require the state to reimburse $1.6 million in expenses related to the attack last december. an attack which 14 people were killed. right now the state only pays local agencies 75% of the cost. the governor doesn't want to set a precedent of the state assuming all future emergency costs. gun violence is an issue that hits close to home. >> san francisco took part in concert across america.

250 concerts across the city in the same tune. about a dozen artists hit the stage including rick stevens. stevens spent 36 years in prison for shooting three men over drugs. since 20 12shgs he is using lyrics to make better decision. this goes beyond music and starts with a stronger community. he admits he still faces challenges over weapons ending up in the wrong hands. >> more and more people are turning weapons in. the problem is more and more are hitting the streets through gun dealerships. >> san francisco played host to the one day music marathon. >>. >> it drew rave reviews at sundance. the emotional documentary of audrey pott is screening in the bay area she is the 15-year-old from saratoga who committed suicide after she was sexually assaulted by a group of boys at

police say they shot the suspect in a gun battle. it started earlier this morning. right now the bomb squad is getting ready to check the suspect's vehicle which is parked at that shopping center. we learned in the last half hour fire burning in sonoma county is up 20% containment from 10% overnight. evacuations remain in effect. it started yesterday morning. last night it had grown to more than 1,500 acres. as for the location, burning about 10 miles east of clover dale near big geyser road. more than 30 homes evacuated. there is a geothermal power plant in that area. that facility is offline. red cross set up an evacuation center and 400 to 500 firefighters are preparing to fight on the front line. engineers will install devices to monitor the soil
