here we go again. another dry yr... another re. loma fire -- sprding right w/coo in the santa crumouains -- here we go again. another dry year, another fire. >> the loma fire spreading right now still overnight in the santa cruz mountains. >> a historic night in the presidential race. i have a feeling by the end of this evening, i'm going to be blamed for everything that's ever happened. >> why not. plus an east bay couple brutally attacked. their assailants still on the loose this morning. morning. it can be seen as far as morgan hill, massive flames, plumes of smoke you might see on your morning drive. laura, you did? >> i came up this morning northbound on 101, it is clearly visible, the glow of the fire on the left-hand side of the freeway. here is the latest. 1,000 acres have burned so far. it's only 5% contained at this point. it's a tough one to fight. it's burning near the loma pre etta ridge near summit road. he' take a look at the pictures live from the summit this morning. they're having so much trouble battling this fire. the hot, dry conditions as well have been tough for firefighters. there are more than 200 firefighters on the linetion this morning. i know some of them personally that were called from their homes last night to head to this fire. it is burning massively in that

area. we'll check in with meteorologist rob mayeda this morning as well. >> we'll corporate this conversation right now. talking about what is essentially a perfect formula for a very dangerous situation. temperatures in the 9s, all the dry brush, the wind will be a real issue. >> the fire started at the peak heating of the day. we saw the dry conditions. unfortunately the same thing we'll repeat. right now not too bad, temperatures in the 60s. you see the areas of red showing up, that means mid 90s around the loma fire today. another thing to watch, the humidity levels at times in the teens. now, in terms of the smoke, this morning it's being pushed to the south. we'll see a little bit of a wind shift today out of the northwest that could pour more smoke into morgan hill. one of the reasons we have a spare-the-air day. again, this is not helping, mid

to upper 90s, a late day sea breeze, cooling tomorrow. but dry and very holt around the bay area. >> we'll look at the commute. around the bay, as you'd expect, obviously a light volume of traffic. in these pre dawn hours, here is san jose and silicon valley. the loma fire is right in this area. there's 101 and there's 17. 101 is going through the open spaces and you are able to see the flames at this point and smoke for all of yesterday afternoon and this morning undoubtedly you'll still see huge plumes coming up through the area. folks coming from the tri-valley were able to see this coming off the crest in the sunol area. don't be surprised if you see the plumes of smoke in the area. the roadways that are closed, not affecting the freeways just yet. >> be careful for the school

normally quiet orinda outside the couple's home on claire month avenue. police say a group of men wearing halloween-type masks robbed an elderly man and woman, the woman shot twice, the man pistol whipped. after the pair handed over their valuables, the men took off on foot. police have not yet released any suspect description. the houston strip mall shooting we first brought you as breaking news yesterday morning. police say the shooter that injured nine people was killed in a shootout with police. investigators believe the suspect who has not yet been identified, acted alone and was wearing nazi paraphernalia. police later found his car with more than 2,000 rounds of live ammunition. all victims in that shooting are expected to survive. 4:36 right now. new details on last friday's mall shooting in burlington, washington, where a turkish immigrant admitted he was the

alligood a alligo alligood. the hearing is being held to determine if there's enough evidence for this case to go to trial. state news. california's handgun storage law now applies to law enforcement officers as well as the general public. that's a law signed yesterday by governor jerry brown that closes a previous loophole. the 2015 shootingth death of kate steinle was committed with a gun stolen from the car of a federal ranger. two months later an artist antonio was killed. the gun used was stolen from a car of a federal officer. this law mandates that city and state law enforcement officers have to store their guns in a lock box or in a car's trunk. turning tragedy into education after four kids drown this summer. three sub merged cars and a glass breaking demonstration.

it comes after two sets of sisters drown in cars their moms drove into rifs. in both accidents the mothers were able to brake and free their daughters. >> seeing it in person and imaging that being my kids, it's kind of like a hit in the gut, like a punch. >> very emotional to think about. people say chp in the area have been asking about what they can do to prevent these tragedies from ever happening again. switching gears now. san jose land laws may be in jeopardy. the willow glen tressel cannot reach historic status. this would be a turning point in the three-year struggle over the preservation of the old railroad bridge. the report was published back in july. according to the "mercury news," it's only now beginning to circulate. the merck says shaig officials are happy about the decision but many residents are certainly

we've been following since yesterday afternoon. here is the very latest on the loma fire this morning. over 1100 acres have burned so far. it started about 3:00 in the afternoon yesterday. it is only 5% contained at this point. it is burning among the loma pre etta ridge this morning. mandatory evacuations are under way. you can actually see the glow of this fire from 101 in the south bay out near morgan hill. a huge plume of smoke erupted into the sky yesterday afternoon alarming so many people in that area. the hot, dry conditions certainly not helping firefighters. >> i was telling mike this morning driving down the sunol grade you can see it. >> it is amazing how large it is. >> on the weather satellite, the heat was showing up off our weather satellites, too. a lot of things being impacted by that loam a ma fire. 50s to 60s outside.

extreme fire conditions. we have a look at numbers in the 90s this afternoon. the trend today from 4:00 to tomorrow, we're beginning to see cooling over the next 24 hours. look at the humidity levels this afternoon, expected to be in the teens in the hilltops. that's not going to help firefighters. wind speeds will pick up a little bit out of the northwest. that's part of the onshore push of air which will eventually bring some cooling to the bay area. you can see today a spread of temperatures, upper 90s inland, but watching the low clouds reform on the coast and during the day tomorrow, big drop in temperatures, inland spots, upper 80s. by the time we get to thursday now, look at the numbers, 70s to low 80s inland, and the marine air making a big-time come back. today's highs, mid to upper 90s, well above average along the south bay. 70s to near 80s. that's where the cooling will be. tri-valley plid to upper 90s,

the seven-day forecast, pretty interesting, big drop in temperatures as we go through the week. check out next weekend seeing big cooling even for inland spots. low 70s and stay tuned next monday. that would be good news to limit fire danger. could see some showers towards the end of the seven-day forecast. >> we're looking over here. as far as traffic flow goes, north of silicon valley is fine. rob talked about seeing the fire from his drive down the sunol grade. it's between 17 and 101 as far as the fire goes. so far the freeways themselves are unaffected except for the distraction. we're watching this for the transit systems. a ten-minute delay for the b.a.r.t. lines out of north concord/martinez station. some equipment problem reported. not unusual for this time of morning. if it gets longer, we'll let you know. we'll look outside at the bay bridge toll plaza where the backup hasn't formed yet. i do want to show you our san

jose camera that i moved into an odd position. here is the silhouette of the 680/280 interchange. looking toward the sky, we see it's hazy in the air. we'll see the glow from the fire from 101, as the smoke comes up, the plumes of smoke will be an even bigger distraction for drivers. back to you. >> certainly a concern for air quality out there with so much ash in the air as well in the south bay yesterday. some good news. we first brought you yesterday another firefighter. >> wick work by firefighters who brought this fire in novato under control by yesterday evening. it burned several acres at sunset parkway and shawn drive. one firefighter suffered minor burns to his legs. firefighters were able to get control by about 8:00 last night. 15 homes in the area were briefly evacuated. investigators are still trying to determine the cause. let's go to business news

45% contained. two santa clara county jail deputies arrested will be facing a judge later today. >> they are each accused of a beating last july that left an inmate severely injured. both faced one count of felony assault. the former inmate, rubin garcia say the guard gave him a fractured jaw and other injuries. >> thanks to a big federal grant, more bay area law enforcement officers will be wearing body cameras in the near future. yesterday the department of justice awarded $20 million grant to improve the use of body cameras. among them, alameda county and foothill community college district. an emotional night in miami as the marlins last night honored the memory of one of the game's rising stars. pitcher jose fernandez died in a
