5:30 am
information coming in. >> reporter: good morning, laura. right now you're looking east at loma prieta. i spoke with a firefighter. he and a string of colleagues started retreating down the mountain because the fire got a jump on them. they were on the ridge on loma prieta, but the fire has gotten so bad that they decided to move down the mountain towards a fire station where they can get a command center established. their concern is the fire will head in this direction. if you look at the smoke and the way the wind is blowing, unfortunately it's blowing in a southerly direction towards the community of stadol. that's where the latest evacuation has been established. all people who live in the area are being told to leave. it's mandatory, not an advisory like it was yesterday. the reason why cal fire is
5:31 am
ordering this now is based on the wind patterns, based on what the temperature projections are, they're afraid that fire will be there by tomorrow, on wednesday. so they want people to get out of there now instead of it being a last-minute rush tomorrow. the latest numbers for cal fire, this loma fire has burned 1100 acres, only 5% contained. cal fire immediately had a dc 10 on scene. a couple attacks in the air from a chopper. they've had ground crews out here as well. this is a fire that is of course burning under very dry conditions. look at the temperatures we had yesterday, approaching 100. we're expecting high temps again today. add to that the challenge the challenge of just getting in there. access is not good. >> travel distances are long, terrain is very steep, the

lot of people there. >> reporter: we're not seeing a lot of people here, but that could change because now, as bob mentioned, these evacuation orders are now mandatory and they are for a wider area. so although only one person chose to spend the night here at so call high school, we expect there could be more foot traffic as people start arriving looking for some food and perhaps some information this morning. there were about a dozen people who came through so cal high school last night. got a bite to eat, visited with their neighbors trying to find out what was going to happen next. again, those evacuation orders are mandatory for croy road. that includes the community of speedal which covers about 110 acres in the santa cruz mountains. it is a swedish community. summit road, madonna road, croy ridge road, under evacuation.

5:35 am
into the 90s, around where the fire is burning, 3,000 feet. humidity levels at times in the teens. as sam mentioned, the winds will be pushing the fire we think making a run to the south and east. interesting to point out this morning, the national service radar to the northwest of that fire has been shut down as that fire continues to burn off to the south and east, a fire which, by the way, mike, you can see as you drive in from the tri-valley you can see. >> the traffic flow moving around the bay well. i want to point out where palo alto is on this map. now we'll move to the other map where they have the fire down here. between 101 and highway 17. it's visible from highway 101 through morgan hill. look at our palo alto camera. i've turned it to the south just off 101. we're seeing the silhouette of these hills, the glow from the hills by that loma fire.
