"early today" starts right now. >> good morning. i'm ayman mohyeldin. >> i'm frances rivera. south carolina is waking up to deal with a frightening school shooting. around 2:00 p.m. local time, a 12-year-old opened fire on an elementary school playground. describing the wounded, a teacher and two students hit by gun shots, one of them a 6-year-old boy in critical condition. it was towards the end of the school day when authorities learned of the active shooter at townville elementary. >> the shooter is a while male, all black clothing and blond hair. >> police say the gunman pulled into the school parking lot and immediately began firing shots. s.w.a.t. teams descended upon the scene as the school went on lock down. the entire incident was over in 15 minutes, thanks to a first responder on the scene who

was acting erratically. it took 50 minutes to respond and then the shots were fired one to two minutes after they arrived on the scene. the victim's sister was distraught. >> i told the police, please don't shoot him. he's sick. mentally sick. i would like you to take them to the hospital. i didn't call the police to come and kill my brother. >> police say he pulled out an object later revealed to be a vaping device and pointed it at officers in a shooting stance. witnesses claim his hands were lifted up in self defense. the city's mayor says the fbi will investigate the shooting along with local authorities. he asked protesters to remain peaceful. >> i saw a man who was distraught. a man who was acting in ways that looked like he was in great pain, and i saw him get gunned down and killed and it broke my heart.
