headlights. it looked a little cloudy. from time to time i think that would be smoke drifting through the area. not visible right now. >> morning haze around san jose and parts of the south bay. temperatures cooling, cool march into the 60s ap 70s. only the warmest spots around the south bay and tri-valley locations. speaking of the loma fire, we have temperatures at 65 degrees and 2500 feet. humidity levels are up. you can see all the green in the hills, that's higher humidity levels. friday things begin to dry out as winds which have been light, contributing to the smoke in the south bay, the wind speeds will pick up tomorrow. it might be good news for air quality, but it could allow the prior to try to make a run to the south heading into friday afternoon. >> definitely something firefighters are considering. still developing at this hour, flames inching closer to homes. firefighters are finally starting to make some progress.

>> "today in the bay's" bob redell continues to track the latest for us on this fire that's been burning in the santa cruz mountains. you've been covering it all week. we're told some people are allowed back into their homes? >> reporter: correct. good morning, laura and sam. cal fire allowed the people evacuated on the santa cruz county side of the loma fire, they are allowed to go back home. but the evacuation order remains in effect for people on the santa clara county side of the fire. we expect to learn more information in about an hour. that's when the 7:00 a.m. briefing will take place. here for the captains and battalion chiefs here at christmas hill park in gilroy, we expect cal fire will announce it has further con and the the loma fire which is still burning northwest of our location in the santa cruz mountains. the latest numbers given to us yesterday, the loma fire is 22% contained, burned 2865 acres,

vallejo is expected to plead guilty. police first thought this case was a hoax. chuck coppola live in vallejo this morning. no one expecting a turn in this case? >> reporter: a very strange turn in the case. the attorney for aaron quinn says, frankly, it's not right. quinn's girlfriend, denise huskins was allegedly kidnapped for ransom in quinn's home. quinn says he was tied up and drugged. suspect 38-year-old matthew muller will plead guilty to a single count of kidnapping and not face additional charges of sexual assault, home invasion and robbery. quinn's attorney says the trial would have exposed how investigators miss handled the case. now he says that information may not come out. >> they're sweeping it under the rug because any serious trial would implicate the missteps of the fbi. >> reporter: quinn's attorney

says the plea deal may result in a lighter sentence that muller would receive otherwise if convicted of the additional charges. early on, vallejo police oh live in vallejo, chuck coppola, "today in the bay." 6:05 right now. jewish community members rattled and certainly annoyed after finding about a hundred anti-semitic flyers pinned to car went shields at the lafayette b.a.r.t. station. those flyers refer to the jewish community as serpents and advocate separating them from children were found littering the ground and attached to car went shields tuesday night in several of b.a.r.t.'s parking lots. b.a.r.t. says it's a first amendment issue and there's nothing the agency can do about it. a live report in the next half hour. a new clue to bring a killer to justice. authorities released the sketch of a man they believe shot and killed a college student and the victim as they played pokemon go along san francisco's water front. u.s. park police are looking for

a man fitting this image seen leaving the area where calvin riley was shot. they also released the toto of a white four door toyota avalon. investigators believe a woman may have been driving that getaway car. at least three homeless people have been stabbed to death this year. officers are questioning people at an encampment after the body of a man was found stabbed to death on tuesday. there are two others who died the same way in san jose. now police are investigating whether they are connected. crime stoppers is offering a $1,000 repoward for information leading to an arrest. police are searching for whoever is responsible for setting several fires along a popular path in concord. police say 30 fires have been set along the iron horse trail in the past few months.

firefighters have been able to contain the flames before any major damage or before anyone got hurt. people living in the area are worried. >> the houses are going to burn sooner or later. a couple weeks ago we had four fires out here within a few minutes. >> so far no suspect has been caught. 6:07 right now. want to get you in tune with the weather this morning, checking in with rob who is in for kari. how are we looking? >> cool temperatures and low clouds along the bay area. 50s and 60s across the board. offshore winds gusting at times up to 32 miles per hour. we'll keep our temperatures running pretty mild. notice san jose, downtown average high 78 degrees, getting close to that by 1:00 this afternoon, closing in on low 80s inland. mostly 60s and 70s for highs. this weekend more clouds spill in. still tracking the chance of seeing showers for sunday and cooler temperatures along our inland valleys.

a few more showers into monday of next week. we have a little build for the commute as you'd expect in the south bay. that's where things are getting more crowded. no problems on the peninsula. we'll shift over towards the east bay where we're looking at another issue, a um co-others. southbound 880 slow out of san leandro ap etch proing eighth street where there was an earlier crash. you see recovery for those speeds. a disabled vehicle reported southbound 880 around industrial. that will slow you in towards union city. meanwhile we'll look at the upper eastshore freeway where the crash is reported at appian way. slowing coming off the carquinez bridge and clearing toward richmond. a little slowing through concord. the build for 680 and the bay bridge metering lights are on. back to you. santa clara county vector control starting in shae tonight spraying for the west nile virus

morning. new this morning,ing crisis averted for now. late yesterday congress passed a temporary spending measure that keeps the government operating through the beginning of december. a shutdown would have started tomorrow if lawmakers did not seal a deal. the measure includes $1 billion for battling the sika virus. an elementary school in south carolina remains closed after a gunman opened fire injuring two students and a teacher. police say the teenage shooter is now in custody. it appears he first killed his father, then moved on to the elementary school. there he opened fire on the playground. two students were hit in the leg and foot, a teacher hit in the shoulder. all expected to survive. we're told that the suspect is home schooled. when it comes to many happy returns, you wouldn't think it would happen this much to a car owner in san francisco. kaya nicholson has a 1997 honda

civic. she's named it boomerang because as we first told you, it was returned four separate times after being stolen. he's coming back. now make it five. it happened again this week. this time she tracked the thief with an app on her smart phone. >> i actually moved to another place about four blocks away. i figured that the guy was still actively dragging it around. >> she finally got her car back. she said the thief left her glasses, a sweatshirt. police have told her to get a lock or a new car if she really wants to prevent theft number six. >> you see that lock on the steering wheel now. 6:14. wells fargo ceo will be back in the hot seat. lawmakers expected to grill john stumpf on the millions of fake accounts created his his workers. edward lawrence joining us from capitol hill. we saw elizabeth warren putting

him on the hot seat. >> reporter: expect very angry members of the house financial services committee. wells fargo will pay a very hefty fine. now the company is being tarred and feathered by congress. ceo john stumpf will have to give up $41 million of his salary but he did not lose his job. last week the senate members had their crack at him. listen to what they had to say. >> you kept your multimillion dollar bonuses and you went on television to blame thousands of $12 an hour employees who were just trying to meet cross sell quotas that made you rich. this is at accountability. you should resign. >> reporter: and the bank is going to be facing some big penalties actually. the state of california, one of their most profit business partners. the state of california suspended et cetera relationship with wells fargo for at least 12

months. that means wells fargo won't be a dealer or broker in any transaction and not allowed to underwrite any bonds. the state of california issues more bonds than any other in the entire nation. they control $2 trillion in assets. the ceo expected to apologize, tell the committee these sales taxes did not meet the ethical standard. investigators say this went on for years and employees gained bonuses off of it. edward lawrence, back to you. >> there are consequences for wells fargo in california as well. that hearing coming today as california leaders just said, announced they're taking swift action against the banking giant. they've suspended all business with wells fargo. state treasure john chung is t saying california is the largest

issuer of municipal bonds. >> just as lehman brothers and bear stearns learned the hard way that no bank is truly too big to fail, those banks which survive the great recession must now learn they are not so powerful as to be untouchable. >> there's john chung there. as edward mentioned, the state is halting all investments in wells fargo securities. that move is expected to cost wells fargo millions of dollars. a former south bay high school teacher is in custody after police say he triggered a lockdown yesterday at the school where he once worked. students had to shelter in place when a former social science teacher showed up on campus. school leaders say arnold glabit is under a restraining order and shown up at the school repeatedly since his dismissal in 2012. law enforcement sources tell nbc bay area the teacher was arrested at the school last week for violating the restraining order. then he went straight back to

the campus yesterday hours after being released from custody. >> of course you're concerned that it would escalate into something more than it has at this point. >> the district describes him as a possible stalker who tries to aggressively contact his former co-workers. the body of long-time israeli leader shimon peres is lying in state in jerusalem. the convoy carrying his coffin arrived in jerusalem earlier today. he died yesterday at the age of 93 after suffering a stroke. right now let's take a live look. there's his coffin where dignitaries are among the thousands of people honoring the late president and prime minister. the public is now paying its respects as well. president obama is leading the u.s. delegation at tomorrow's funeral. saying good-bye to a passionate and talented baseball player that touched so many people and teammates as they now touch the hearse that contains his body.

the entire miami marlins baseball team gathered to send off the hearse of pitcher jose fernandez. the procession left the stadium at 2:16 people. the 16 specifically in honor of hernandez's jersey number. today there will be a private funeral. jose fernandez was killed tragically when a boat carrying him and two friends crashed in miami beach. people in the bay area helping a father of three get a bone marrow trance plate. >> adam krief is balting terminal cancer. his story is being publicized by kim kardashian west and ellen degeneres. 33ers yoo old fighting a rare cancer. around the country people have been holding drives to sign people up for the bone marrow donor program. one at the south peninsula hebrew school. we skiepd with krief from his

very serious breaking news out of new jersey right now as we take a look at this. a transit train has struck a platform. it happened a short while ago right at the height of thursday

morning rush hour traffic. all this happening in hoboken, new jersey. as you can see, that train actually breached the station causing extensive structural damage there. people running around for safety. you see twisted metal and bricks out there. witnesses describe the train plowing through the platform and hitting a couple of pillars. that caused the roof of the station to collapse opt the train. there are reports of dozens of injuries and actually according to wnbc, our new york station, the hoboken police chief told them there were, quote, mass casualties. that is absolutely the concern at this point. a lot of people at the station. that train came right through the platform. we're checking with more sources in new york to confirm that informatio information: a computer train has crashed into the platform. good morning and thank you for

joining us on this thursday. i'm sam brock. >> i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> you can see how chaotic the scene is, but want to get to your morning commute locally. >> let's emphasize the fact that the train picture that you saw that crashed is in new jersey, hoboken. locally a much calmer situation. no delays for our transit system. a predictable pattern as far as speeds through the most of the bay. metering lights on and you have a typical backup here. a bigger usual e issue westbound 88, earlier crash that took a while to clear from lanes. it looked like things might be clearing a little there. a gust of win across the benicia bridge. >> pretty strong toward fairfield, gusts of 35 miles per hour and a fairly mild forecast ahead today. 60s and 70s for most of the bay area. good news around the loma fire. temperatures at 63 degrees, cool temperatures today, humidity

levels have come up, but i do want to show you the change heading into tomorrow. drier conditions and unfortunately some gusty winds by tomorrow afternoon. we'll be watching how the loma fire reacts as the wind speeds pick up on friday. >> we have the latest developments on the loma fire. thousands of firefighters continue to battle it on the front lines this morning as it grows to nearly 3,000 acres. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joining us live from gilroy with the progress the crews are making and having improved their resources and their manpower. they've been able to stunt the growth of the fire. >> reporter: good morning sam and laura. in a few minutes cal fire will hold the briefing here at cal fire base camp at christmas hill park in gilroy. we do expect containment numbers to improve. as of yesterday, the loma fire is just 22% contained, over 2,800 acres have burned.

there are over 1,100 men and women on the front lines working an exhaustive 24-hour shifts. good news for people who live in part of the loma fire area in the santa cruz mountains, cal fire lifted evacuation orders for evacuees on the santa cruz county side of the fire. the santa clara county side evacuees, they're evacuation order is still in effect. part of the challenge for firefighters in getting the fire out is the santa cruz mountains are super dry because of the california drought. >> on this fire, this slope has been burning a second time arpd burning out the second amount of fuel. so we're having to almost deal with this fire twice in some places. >> reporter: the loma fire has destroyed one home, six out buildings, damaged another home. cal fire says it is still

"today in the bay's" kris sanchez joining us live tlf with how police are responding to the situation. kris? >> reporter: good morning to you, sam. out hear at the lafayette b.a.r.t. station, we haven't seen any flyers posted on any of the windshields of the vehicles here. but if there were, b.a.r.t. tells us they would be protected by the first amendment guarantee to our freedom of speech. an nbc bay area contacted us after finding one of the flyers with anti-semitic speech. we blurred out the offensive

language. we can tell you there were slurs related to jury wish people and an instruction to, quote, browbeat them, flog them and harass them. it directs people to a blog titled waterboarding community which lists jewish members of the community by name. the viewer contacted b.a.r.t. and b.a.r.t. police who told her there wasn't much they could do. she told us, quote, i believe in free speech. this seems like hate speech. they're always telling people to say something when they see something. i tried to say something to b.a.r.t. and i got nothing. the response from b.a.r.t. says leafletting free speech material is allowable and we cannot prohibit it. that, of course, so long as there are no implicit threats in those flyers. we also checked with the lafayette police department. they say they're following up on this. we're also trying to track down

a prominent member of the jewish community who was reportedly here, saw a man leafletting and managed to get a picture of the man and his license plate. we'll see if that materializes anything police can use later today. 6:37 right now. in just a few hours the suspect at the center of the bizarre kidnapping case out of vallejo is expected to plead guilty. police first thought this case was a hoax. matthew muller is expected to take a plea deal in sacramento. muller is accused of kidnapping denise huskins antis up her boyfriend last year. quinn's attorney is not happy, say muller may get a lighter sentence than he deserves. >> if you give him an opportunity to get back out on the street, he's not going to change his stripes he's a psychopath. >> matthew muller, a former lawyer and university

trained attorney is now disbarred. keeping drunk drivers from getting onto the road in the first place, a tough new law in california to keep people safe. that new law requires convicted drunk drivers to install breathalizers in their cars. we spoke to a woman who lost her son to a drunk driver. >> my motivation is nobody would deserve the pain that my family has endured with the loss of matt. >> in the 25 states where it has been in place for a number of years, they've seen the death rate from duis reduced by about 40%. that law does not go into effect until 2019. the air quality in the south bay is so bad that students are being told to stay inside. the san jose unified school district tweeted out that administrators have been instructed to tell principals to keep students indoors during the

school day to avoid any potential relgt risks because of all that smoke. what we are seeing this morning are wind speeds starting to pick up. that's going to help a little bit with the smoke, rob, but that could also be problematic for firefighters. >> we should see better air quality on friday. today unhealthy amounts of smoke pollution the south bay. moderate air quality levels as the winds are moving the smoke into morgan hill. watch the wind speeds, looking at friday, trending gusty which may improve air quality. complicated air quality. today 60s to mid 70s for most of the bay area. trending coomer through the weekend. looking at a good chance of seeing rain for the second half of the weekend into monday, valley temperatures continue to cool down, upper 60s, near 70 by monday. >> i like the trend in temperature. we're showing a smoother drive. we do have the build, pretty predictable patterns. we're looking at the south bay where northbound routes starting to push through san jose and approaching the rest of silicon

commuter train station, a train has crashed into the station at the height of thursday morning's commute leaving twisted piles of metal and rubble, bricks. concern is growing for the structure of the building, also the concern growing of mass casualties and dozens of injuries according to police reports. preliminary reports, this is our live look at our sister station wnbc this morning. these are pictures coming in from social media that are just flowing into website this morning showing serious damage to the train station, extensive structural damage as well. you see mass panic, chaos, as people are trying to get out, trying to get help to the people who need help right now. early reports saying this is possibly just an accident. this is according to two law enforcement officials although they stress it is very early in the investigation. we'll continue to follow this out of new jersey this morning. sam? >> back now to something

happening in california, laura. protesters want their message to be heard. overnight demonstrators taking to the strip mall where a black man was killed by a police officer. a shooting that happened on tuesday as they react now with new information about what happened in el cajon about 15 mailings east of shaig. >> black lives matter! >> you hear the protesters shouting "black lives matter" as they absorb and digest new information and details about the shooting. police say the object the victim pulled from his pocket pointed at the police officer was not a wep pan after all. it was a vape smoking device. investigators say the two officers shot that man only one minute after arriving on scene. there's video of the shooting, but it is not being released by investigators. the victim's named is alfred olango, a refugee from uganda. a key change in california's rape law. there will no longer be a

ten-year statute of limitations on rape and child molestation charges. women who claimed bill cosby drugged and assaulted them lobbied for this bill. it was signed by governor brown yesterday. when the new law takes effect next year, it will pertain to cases that have not yet expired. it won't affect the cases against bill cosby which date back more than ten years. >> a rare bipartisan agreement allows families of the 9/11 terror attacks to sue saudi arabia. they claim they gave aid to al qaeda or turned a blind eye to the campaign. the 9 s/11 commission found no evidence of saudi support. wells fargo ceo in the hot seat testifying once again before congress. it comes after california leaders took action against the banking giant. john stumpf will go before the house financial services committee.

breaking news out of hoboken, new jersey this morning. these are live pictures coming into our newsroom where a transit train has crashed into the station at the height of thursday morning's rush, leaving twisted piles of metal and bricks as concern is growing over mass casualties an dozens of irs j. we are seeing some really harrowing pictures coming in this morning. they believe at this point it's an accident, but it's very early in the investigation. right now they're trying to get to the people that are involved that are possibly hurt because of this crash. this is an aerial shot overlooking the station. as i mentioned, a very busy time of the morning there. >> rush hour traffic, the training according to witnesses were packed. there were passengers describing the experience of one second being in the train and the next crashing through the platform. part of the roof there collapsing. questions about the structural

people on the santa clara county side have to wait a bit longer to get back to their properties. the fire is still 22% contained. other top news now, in just a few hours the suspect at the center of a bizarre kidnapping case out of valet hoe is expected to plead guilty. police first thought this case was a hoax. matthew muller is expected to take a plea deal in sacramento. he's accused of kidnapping denise huskins, tieing her up and her boyfriend aaron quinn last year. quinn's attorney is not happy saying muller may now get a lighter sentence than he deserves. jewish community members rattled and annoyed after finding about 100 anti similar met tick flyers pinned to car windshields. the flyers were found littered o on the ground and attached to cars tuesday night in several b.a.r.t. parking lots. b.a.r.t. says it's a first amendment issue and there's nothing they can do about it. >> all right.

let's get back to lighter, clearer news here, weather and traffic at 6:58. we are definitely seeing a nice cooldown. that continues. >> today's temperatures continue. that cooling trend highs in most spots. close to 80 degrees around the tri-valley and areas south of san jose. two changes to watch in the seven-day forecast. wind speeds picking up tomorrow. clouds coming in for the weekend. sunday will lead we think to rain showers and sierra snow possibly by the end of the weekend. a serious crash in the north bay. >> just got word of this. the bulk of the viewers' commute, a pretty plant drive for south bay, peninsula, east bay. that's what we're showing arc cross the san mateo bridge and dumbarton bridge. approaching the carquinez bridge out of the north bay, word of a crash involving a motorcycle and a big rig. that is a horrible mismatch. a very serious situation blocking at least two lanes slowing traffic out of the north bay and into the east bay.
