a vehicle spun sideways in the middle of the roadway. traffic moving slowly on the approach. a little build for hayward. as i said, anthony, the roads are dry. what do you have ahead. >> showers ahead. the sunday forecast includes some rain. keep that in mind on this friday. cloudy skies for the most part. winds not all that gusty. as we head through the day because we have the fire burning across the santa cruz mountains. around 5:30 is when they'll be at their strongest, 15 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts. then it will relax into the overnight hours. you may need to hold on to that jacket until the afternoon with low 70s for our warmest locations. 50s and 6 os at the coastline. back to you guys. >> anthony, thank you very much. such an emotional night for families in the santa cruz mountains, many of whom have learned they might not have anything to go back home to as flames from the loma fire continue to rage this morning.

"today in the bay's" bob redell has been tracking firefighters' progress. what can you tell us this morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're at christmas hill park in gilroy, base camp for cal fire. i don't know if these trucks coming in are reenforcements or firefighters coming off the front lines. to your left you can see they've got one of the inmate workers here resupplying the water for the inmates who are to the left and lining up for what would be their fourth day of firefighting, trying to get some foot in their stomachs first. cal fire informed us that fire did grow overnight. instead of it being around 4,000 acres, it is now at 4,300, just over that. still 34% contained. there are still more than 1900 men and women fighting the fire which has destroyed eight homes. cal fire's goal is still to have the fire fully contained by monday. they have no news on the condition of the firefighter

taken to the hospital on monday. last night residents who live within the fire zone showed their appreciation for firefighters. there was some frustration and concern. some of the people last night at the meeting, concerned, they haven't been able to go back into the fire zone to find out if theirs is one of the eight that burned to the ground. >> smack right in the middle of the fire. we don't know if our stuff was destroyed. >> we know the area around it has burned. we're hoping we'll have a home. >> reporter: cal fire told the residents they are trying to get them back into their property some time next week. residents also have another concern, over the heavy fire equipment that could be damaging the roads inside the fire zone since some of those roads are private. cal fire promised they will fix whatever they break. back out here live at base camp where you can see some of the firefighters are waiting in line for nourishment, breakfast, so

when they go out in the front lines -- remember these are 24-hour shifts. they will be well energized for what will be a long day. cal fire will be having a briefing in about an hour for now. the updates on what they can expect weatherwise. we do know they are predicting winds later in the day which is not a good thing. live in gilroy, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> a friendly face in the hallways for so many years. now a school community is in mourning after losing a beloved police officer and the father of seven kids. >> officer ken zink was on his way to work when he was killed. he was a well-liked school resource officer at helms middle school. 300 students yesterday wrote messages an notes to him. the principal said he learned every single students' name and was seen as a very good friend. >> unexpected, an accident.

the students were just in shock. >> there was a number of kids that, you know, he worked with them and their families. this is an officer that not only did it during his time, but also on his own time. >> the school has a plan to hold a memorial in the next couple weeks so the students can honor him. 6:05. new this morning, three suspects were reportedly in custody after police say their car nearly ran down a police officer only to crash following another chase in the east bay. that chase ended in a park on alston way in berkeley late last night. police say the driver slammed through barriers protecting a park and wound up, as you see there, against a tree. earlier police say the driver tried to run down a richmond police officer during what started as a routine traffic stop. three people in the car were arrested. 6:05 right now. no trains coming in and out of hoboken, new jersey. investigators are trying to figure out what caused a train to crash during yesterday morning's rush hour. a young mother was killed and

more than 100 others hurt. the commuter train plowed through a barrier, jumping the track and slamming into the role. authorities say the train did not have positive train control, ptc, it uses gps and computers to monitor trains to stop them from speeding or derailing. >> year after year we're going to continue to see accidents that could have been prevented by ptc. >> only 22% of trains in the country currently have that advanced braking system. a live report from new jersey in 30 minutes. officers on the wrong side of the law. two more police officers implicated in the sexual misconduct scandal in the east bay will be arraigned later today. former contra costa county deputy ricardo perez and oakland police officer giovanni verde will appear this afternoon. both are accused of engaging in sexual acts with jasmine who used to be known as celeste guap. the inappropriate relations

allegedly happened when she was a minor. police say a south bay middle teacher is facing serious charge. david graham worked at harper academy in san jose. investigators san jose graham sexually assaulted a student back in 2007, and it's coming to light now. graham was her algebra teacher. a friend of the alleged victim reached out and contacted police next week. 6:07. seeing justice in person. the woman at the center of last year's bizarre vallejo kidnapping was on hand to see her kidnapper enter a guilty plea. matthew muller entered that plea in a sacramento courtroom. the woman he kidnapped, denise huskins, was there as was her boyfriend aaron quinn who muller tied up. police initially considered the whole report a hoax. as part of the plea prosecutors are recommending a sentence of no more than 40 years in prison and dropping other charges including sexual assault. >> mr. muller took ownership of

what he did today. he did not want to have a trial where miss huskins would testify. >> muller, a one-time harvard trained lawyer is scheduled to be sentenced in january. for months he terrifiesed a south bay neighborhood. now the man accused of shooting at on coming cars late at night is expected to enter a plea in court. investigators say michael lewis was targeting cars along blossom hill road in san jose all summer. he has a long criminal history, one that accuses stealing money and assault. in this case lewis is facing attempted murder charges. a bay area mother says hir teenage son was groebd by a san jose medical worker explains why she's suing the institution. investigators believe robert lasinger is accused of groping several patients.

during a news conference yesterday, the mother said she believes the whole thing could have been prevented. >> i think it's sick, and i feel partly responsible. i feel guilty for that because i sent him there. as a mother, you just want to protect your children. >> stanford issued a statement saying there are extensive inaccuracies, and any claim that they knew he was a predator and did nothing is false. stanford health care says the firing had nothing to do with the hospital investigation. fremont police are looking for this man who may have witnessed a hit-and-run. the surveillance video comes from ac transit moments after the crash. officers are emphasizing he didn't do anything wrong. they just want his help in solving it. the hit-and-run happened in the irving ton area. the woman hit remains in critical condition. investigators have not released any details about the suspect. 6:09 right now. a lot of people gearing up for

it's called a black moon and it only happens once every couple years. the black moon is the second new moon within the same month. hard to see because the moon is actually blanketed in darkness. nasa doesn't officially recognize the term black moon but it makes for great conversation among stargazers. some have called the black moon a sign of new beginnings. that's always a nice hash tag. >> something creepy going on. anyone hear that noise in the background or is it just me? >> i didn't hear anything at all. >> nothing spooky at all about the black moon. bright days ahead as we head into the weekend. >> we are tracking some rain. we're excited about that. no mystery there. we'll try to time it out for you coming up. we have clouds in the area this morning. a sign of that cool marine air that's pushed inland. great news especially for firefighters trying to get a handle on the loma fire still

burning here. all week long we've been looking at that continuing. right now temperatures in the 50s, 57 in san jose, 54 in half moon bay and 54 in san francisco. you'll notice in the seven-day forecast, we have some rain on sunday. winds will start to gust later this afternoon, especially by the lunchtime and points there after, anywhere from 15 to 30 miles at the coastline. we may have higher gusts. after dinner winds will subside, but that's the one small caveat we have to deal with, especially for firefighters battling that fire. 71 for you today in san jose. 68 in palo alto and 60 today for san francisco. only 63 for oakland. here comes the storm system i was telling you about. you can see the cold front ahead of it. that will push through. that will be a dry cold front. it will pick up the winds as i

mentioned. when the rain comes through, that's going to be on sunday. time it out for you, right around lunchtime, the showers will push through, a quick burst of rain, by about 3:00, 4:00, we'll dry out in the north bay. the showers push to the east and the south bay by the afternoon hours and we'll dry out towards the evening. we may get another burst of rain for monday morning. we'll continue to keep tabs on that. overall, rainfall amounts really impressive for this go zsh around. we're talking from trace amounts at the coast, maybe some of the higher thunderstorms may get a burst of maybe .25 inch and maybe .5 inch. overall temperatures cool and rebounds for next week. here is mike tracking your morning commute. >> we expect a couple of problems for mass transit. concerns popping up now. 237, that crash looks like it's cleared from lanes. 880 southbound toward warren. near the interchange there, reports of a crash blocking the lane. sensors slowing over the last couple minutes.

then things improve. there are reports of smoke near the 85/87 interchange. maybe a small brush fire. we're on alert for those types of things. >> another fire we've been following big time this week, the loma fire. within the last ten minutes or so we've learned that fire has grown to more than 4,300 acres. that's up from the last look. this morning we're also learning eight houses have been destroyed. but there is good news this morning. progress is actually being made. the containment is up to 34%. cal fire says most of the fire is holding at casa loma road. they're hoping to get people living in the area back into their homes by next week. evacuations are still in place for the santa clara county side of the loma fire. most residents in santa cruz county are being told they can actually go home. we're constantly updating our digital platform on the loma fire. you can always get the latest on our app as well as our facebook and twitter feeds.

still absorbing a surreal scene across the country. this disaster on the east coast. a mother is dead after a new jersey commuter train plows into a platform. this is breaking news we first brought you this story yesterday. >> >> reporter: laura and sam, good morning. it's been just over 24 hours since the crash. most mornings 15,000 commuters or more pour through the hoboken station behind me. this morning only a handful of people inside. teams pulling away, bringing in investigators hoping to figure out what went wrong here. in just minutes the morning rush unraveled. >> i have heavy structural damage. major, major casualties. >> reporter: the train sped into the hoboken station slamming into and over the bumpers at the end of the track. >> it was just -- it was

horrific. an explosion of concrete dust, electrical wire. >> the canopy collapsed. 34-year-old fabiola bittar de kroon was killed. >> we heard people screaming, they couldn't get out. >> more than 100 on and off the train were injured including the engineer who is said to be cooperating with the national transportation safety board investigation into the crash. witnesses say the train never seemed to slow down. ntsb agents hope to get key data from the crash from the train's black box. >> from the event recorder we hope to get information such as speed and braking. >> reporter: investigators have access to the locomotive. but to this point structural damage to the station has kept them out of the rest of the train.

of sksly assaulting one of his students. "today in the bay's" chuck coppola has more on the investigation. good morning, chuck. >> reporter: good morning, laura and sam. police say the teacher used his position of authority to exploit the victim into a sexual relationship. the teacher has been identified as 64-year-old david scott graham of los gatos. he's a math teacher at the mid ld school campus of harker school, a private academy in san jose. that's where police arrested him yesterday. the former student now in her 20s say it happened when she was 13, back in 2007. police say she told that to a friend two months ago, that led to a police report. spokeswoman for the school told the "san jose mercury" news this is the first time the school has been made aware of these allegations. we were shocked and deeply dismayed when the reported situation was brought to our attention. harker school has bay area roots going back to 1893. graham taught there for the last 13 years. live in san jose, chuck coppola,

"today in the bay." >> no doubt they may be looking for other victims. pleasanton police say a student posted violent posts. happening today, the man accused of kidnapping and murdering sierra lamar is scheduled to return to a courtroom. anthony torres is charged in the murder four years ago. the body has never been found. last week torres' attorneys argued for more time before a trial begins. they're requesting all death penalty related issues be decided first. the start of the trial has been delayed numerous times before. but it may begin as soon as next month. 6:36 right now on your friday morning. in california, go where you feel comfortable. gender is no longer going to matter when using single stall public bathrooms. the changes you will notice is

hackers. the department of homeland security outlined numerous attempts of intrusions on the election system. they also say only registration databases have been targeted, not actual voting or tabulation machines. russian hackers have been tied to some of the election-related hacking. u.s. troops could be going back to iraq. american soldiers are needed to help reclaim mosul from isis fighters. they will be needed to train and advise iraqi troops. u.s. officials will be making an announcement later today. their operation is expected to begin in a few months. today is the last day for governor brown to act on the latest registration approved by state lawmakers. there are closely-watched bills still hanging in the balance. one is called the brock turner bill. it would have closed the loophole that would have allowed the stanford swimmer to receive what many thought was a light sentence for his assault of a

to work when he was killed. he was a school resource officer at helms elementary school. the principal of the school says he learned every students' name and was seen as their friend. the school has plans to have a memorial in the next couple weeks so the students can occasionally honor him. new this morning, three suspects in custody after police say their car nearly ran down an officer only to crash following a brief chase in the east bay. it ended in a park on alston way late last night. police say they slammed through barriers protecting the park and wound up against the tree. earlier the driver tried to run down a richmond police officer during what started as a traffic stop. three people in the car were arrested. a middle school teacher at a prestigious school in san jose is in jail this morning. accused of sexually assaulting a former student. investigators say david graham sexually assaulted the student
