c'mon in, pop pop! happy birthday! i survived a heart attack. i'm doing all i can to keep from having another one. and i'm taking brilinta. for people who've been hospitalized for a heart attack.
8:29 am
i take brilinta with a baby aspirin. no more than one hundred milligrams as it affects how well it works. brilinta helps keep my platelets from sticking together and forming a clot. brilinta reduced the chance of another heart attack. or dying from one. it worked better than plavix. >>don't stop taking brilinta without talking to your doctor since stopping it too soon increases your risk of clots in your stent, heart attack, stroke, and even death. brilinta may cause bruising or bleeding more easily, or serious, sometimes fatal bleeding. don't take brilinta if you have bleeding, like stomach ulcers, a history of bleeding in the brain, or severe liver problems. tell your doctor about bleeding, new or unexpected shortness of breath, any planned surgery, and all medicines you take. >>talk to your doctor about brilinta. i'm doing all i can. that includes brilinta. if you can't afford your medication, astra zeneca may be able to help.

pe peninsula doughs line, more drizzle. 61 closer to downtown and some sparse areas of drizzle between now and probably late morning before things begin to dry out. skies around the inner east bay and peninsula begin to clear. cool temperatures for another day. you can see those numbers in the 60s to low 70s for most of the bay area today. the trend does turn a lot warmer as you approach the weekend around san francisco. it. go to the weather channel and cable and of course you can't spell that without al. then we have these nice ladies from chicago. hello, chicago. hello. now let's head back inside to savannah. al, thank you so much. emily blunt is the star of the new psychological thriller "the girl on the train" based on the best-selling book, about a woman whose life spirals out of control down a very dangerous path.
8:33 am
>> we tried everything and nothing worked. and it just absolutely just broke my heart and i got really sad. and then -- and then the booze just broke us. >> why are you really here, rachel? >> because i'm afraid of myself. >> emily blunt, good morning. >> good morning. can i say, i watched it last night, you play a teetering hot mess who may or may not be a murderer. >> thank you so much. i think. >> i read two things in the research that kind of made me laugh. number one, you said this is by far the most damaged person you've ever played. number two, the director thought of you immediately for the role. >> i know! that made me laugh.
8:34 am
i was like, oh, great, they just offered it thinking nothing said emily blunt like a raging alcoholic. >> we've got some issues. what a juicy role to dive in to though. >> yeah. big boy. it was really cool. >> rachel is -- you like her and then you get frustrated with her. >> sure. >> she's got her struggles, her addictions. she keeps doing things we don't approve of. how did you approach the role? must have been really challenging. >> to play an alcoholic is a challenge because you don't want to trivialize anything about this disease which is really what she's going through. and yet she is compulsive and voyeuristic and has an unhealthy obsession with this seemingly perfect couple. it is teeteriteetering. >> the clip we just had up a minute ago. there is the emily we know. and here's rachel.
8:35 am
>> that looks more like me. >> they had to work hard to kind of make you look bedraggled. but i mean it is incredible because you really do embody this role and i thought it was interesting what you said about playing someone with addiction. it would have beens to do kind of the cliche stumbling around. >> i think there are pitfalls. drunk casting is challenging and it can look comical and silly. think this is somebody who's damaged. how do you catch the unsettling nature of the drunk. >> you had a big secret during this, a secret that was born last spring and it's named violet. you were just in the beginning weeks of your pregnancy. >> poor sweet violet rattling around in there while i played the alcoholic. >> did it help in the sense of here you have all these kind of hormones and feelings? >> it is funny because i don't know anything other than what i experienced with that film being
8:36 am
pregnant with violet. i think i was really tired. i became the queen of power naps. they're like, emily, you've got ten minutes. out cold somewhere in a corner. >> justin thorough who plays of course tom, he guessed. >> i was working with him in the stunts. i was like i don't know if i should stand up too quickly. he said, "you did edge of tomorrow." >> how is your husband? totally outnumbered at home. >> he loves it. we have a boy dog. >> well, that's good. >> i was thinking last time when john was here he admitted to having having an obsession with "devil
8:37 am
wears prada." people loved the book so much, "the girl on the train." i think that's great but it is also a teeny, tiny bit scary because we all have the book in our mind. >> your imagination is so powerful and you have sort of ownership over these characters. they are your invention in many. ways. yeah, i'm sure there is going to be some people who will be, well, i didn't feel like that. >> you did. you were the in everybody in my mind. it is a thrill ride. she's a whole bunch of trouble. emily blunt, thank you so much. "the girl on the train" from our sister company, universe, opens on friday. coming up, ski legend lindsey vonn opening up about life on and off the slope.

if you beautiful," embrace your natural beauty, eat clean and harness your power. lindsey, always good to see you. how you doing? >> i'm good. >> how you feeling? you were banged up the last time we saw each other. the last couple years. how are your knees and everything? >> good. good. i took some time off this spring and i'm healthy. just got back from chile, skiing fast. so good. >> one of the last times i saw you, i came out to colorado to see you right after knee surgery. i was shocked by how much you were doing while you were still on crutches in terms of rehab. i remember thinking this girl is not only strong physically but mentally. then i'm reading the book and you say it wasn't always that way. >> no. it definite wasn't always that way. i think i'm strong when it comes to working out and everything i do on the mountain, i feel confident in myself. but a lot of times i really don't feel that confident. i don't know. i have my insecurities, like everyone else. being on the mountain is really the only time i feel -- i don't know -- 100% sure of myself.
8:41 am
>> this book is a little memoir and a lot fitness and diet and all that sort of thing. >> not diet. >> well, not diet. >> i was going to get to that. you say diets don't really work. >> i don't believe in the word. just in general. i mean diets are something you do for a short period of time to try to lose weight. my book is about just making healthy choices, understanding the choices that you're making and doing so in a way that makes you feel better and feel more confident. >> more of a lifestyle. >> yeah. >> have you ever dieted? >> yeah, i have. >> how did that go? >> it doesn't work. i've tried paleo. i was on this crazy high carbohydrate diet. i've been on atkins style diets. none of those things work. >> there is a lot about working out in the book. one piece of advice you say to people, if you still think working out can't be fun, then you just haven't found the right workout. >> exactly. >> how do you suggest people go about finding the right workout and not getting discouraged?
8:42 am
>> it's experimenting. of course, some things when you are working hard it is not always the most fun. but it is finding something that will keep you going back to the gym. if you like pilates, that's awesome. do pilates. if you like doing squats, just go experiment, have fun, try something new. that's kind of what my book is about. just gives you a lot of options and you can try things. whatever gets you going back to the gym and allows you to have fun, that's what its a he all abo about. >> when you became strong and fit, obviously a natural talent as welling wi, you became a cha. one of the things that came with becoming a champion, you became a celebrity. having known you a while, i've always felt you weren't as comfortable with that side of things as the athletic side of things. fair? >> very fair. i'm very confident on a mountain, like i said. i haven't felt like i fit in on the red carpet. i'm just not your typical body
8:43 am
type. i have are insecurities. >> you're self-conscious about that? >> of course, when i'm glammed up i feel beautiful and more confident. but when i go home, i'm like i was sitting next to emily blunt and she is amazingly beautiful and i don't compare to that. it's always been pretty tough for me but i feel like i'm finally getting better at it. >> you said the more time you spend at hollywood parties the less you feel you fit in. did you mean physically or emotionally with that crowd? >> not physically. i have great friends in hollywood and i know a lot of amazing people but i just don't feel like i compare. i'm just bigger, i'm muscular and i don't feel like i fit in. >> i bet you a lot of san jose celebri those red carpets and parties are saying i wish i was more like that than worrying about being super thin that hollywood tends to put on people. >> there is a certain stereotypical body type that they want in movies and it is
8:44 am
hard to be healthy and i hope that that changes and hopefully my book helps a little bit with that. just gives people a little bit more confidence. >> confident in a good ski season this year? >> very. i feel really good. i was just training with the men down in chile. i'm pretty fast. >> you've always been pretty fast. always good to see you. lindsey will be back with kathie lee and hoda and the book is called "strong is the new beautiful." up next, the stars keep coming. we have kelly clarkson here in the studio talking about a new book of her own. but first, this is "today" on nbc. on nbc. you are competing nowith kelly w r veteran. wa trying to convince bad for us. federal law. low level. companies' lies. vets. dollars a year. vote yes on prop 61.

impressive resume. she has a new book, "river rose." river rose is your little daughter. >> it's too early for her but she just was snuggling with me earlier. she wanted on stage. she's like, "i'm ready!" i was like so nervous about the future. >> we were talking before the break, you are kind of an accidental children's book author. >> yeah. i didn't plan on it. i wrote them on a plane coming back from london. she was like 1 and i'm like she's never going to remember this and her passport is already stocked with stamps. i started writing these little short stories for her. had these little pictures. then all of a sudden my nanny and my husband were like you should make these into children's books. they have little lullabies that go with each one of them. so it was fun. >> so if you buy the book, you also get the lullaby. >> yeah. then there is a doll, too.
8:48 am
my little girl, that's her favorite part. you press the sing and i sing the little lullaby. >> that's funny. i was going to ask you to sing the lullaby. but here we have it right here. >> you sing to your kids at night when they're sleeping. it sounds super sweet. but then it sounds kind of corny. >> i think your singing might be better than most of our singing. >> i don't know. >> you have a new little boy, remi. >> our kids are so close. >> i'm just copying you. >> is this your last? >> yes. yes. yes, yes, and yes. what about you? >>y he. gone. i literally on the table said you make sure this can't happen again. >> i'm like, this is a wrap. >> we have four total so that's a lot. >> i was thinking sequel. river rose has a book.

by the way, curry doesn't mean spicy. a lot of people think that. it doesn't mean spicy at all. use a mild curry powder. you want to mix that up. you're going to put it in a ramekin like this. just keep it in the french under saran wrap. you can also make a log with it. >> will it last for awhile in. >> yes. for a long time. you're putting this in here. let that melt. i want you to let that melt and then put the psychologicscallop. >> pretend it's melted more than it has. i smell that. >> if you wanted to do a mediterranean version of this, all you would do is swap out the curry powder for herbs of provance. you can use it in all your cooking. and don't crowd the pan.

you want to it caramelize. >> while this is cooking down, i'll watch this. you're going to heat some spices. >> yes. ooum going to show you how to roast whole spices. that wakes up all the oils in your cooking. you want a hot, dry pan. you're just going to add caramom, cloves. when you add them, you want to break the pods and get the dark seeds out. >> while you do that, let's look downstairs. we've got them tasting away. >> hoda finished hers already. >> i'm done. i finished. >> don't eat the star right? >> that is. and it's so beautiful. >> star is great to use in soups and stocks. now all i'm doing is throwing these dry whole herbs into this pan which has sot shallots and ginger and chilies. that's it. just three ingredients here cooking. it's going to be done in a minute. and so this i'm going to turn up the heat a little bit more.

9:06 am
she's bound and gagged in a room, that's frightening. >> they'll probably rethink their security. >> well, any have to do that. you said people online like criticize, listen, she's a celebrity, that's what she does, she wears beautiful clothes, as we pointed out, most of it not even hers. the ring i think was a gift from kanye. nevertheless, that's what she does and she shouldn't have to feel and fear for her safety because she happens to be a celebrity who wears nice stuff and shows it online. lupita luongo's dress was stolen. other celebrities' homes have been broken into, security breached many times. no one blames them for it so why blame her? this is horrible. >> but i also feel like twitter -- i told you, i got on twitter weeks ago. it is a very negative place. people i think look at her life and say how did she get that. i think there is an anger there. and people are largely followers. the narrative today is that
