robbers burst into kim kardashian's paris bedroom in the middle of the night. was she targeted after social media posts like this one? could it be an inside job in the hunt for suspects "today," tuesday, october 4th, 2016. >> announcer: from nbc news, this is "today" with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everybody, welcome to "today" on a tuesday morning. starting to get a taste of matthew. >> all eyes on the weather. this storm showing no signs of letting up. our top story, the atlantic's most powerful hurricane in a decade, matthew devastating parts of the caribbean this morning. on a projected path that will bring the storm dangerously close to the east coast of the u.s. nbc's gabe gutierrez is in the thick of it in haiti this morning. gabe, good morning. >> reporter: savannah, the eye of the storm is about to slam

into the southwestern tip of this country here in port-au-prince. we are already starting to see the rain pick up. as you mentioned, this is the most powerful atlantic hurricane in almost a decade. this morning, hurricane matthew, a slow-moving category 4 juggernaut is beginning to tear their haiti. hardest hit -- the impoverish country's southwest peninsula. some fear up to 40 inches of rain in some areas triggering deadly mudslides. >> the storm could be highly devastating for haiti, particularly the rainfall. >> reporter: nasa capturing this dramatic view of the monster storm from space, its eye clearly visible. matthew's relentless storm surge and torrential rain flooding parts of jamaica. eastern cuba and the bahamas now on high alert as the storm slogs through the caribbean, now even threatening the u.s. east coast later this week.

florida's governor has already declared a state of emergency. >> if matthew directly impacts florida, there will be massive destruction that we haven't seen in years. >> reporter: the government is urging residents to head to emergency shelters. but many are refusing to leave. now the death toll is expected to climb. hurricane matthew's already blamed for at least three deaths, including a fisherman here in haiti who was swept away. another man is still missing. matt and savannah guthrie? >> gabe gutierrez, thank you. up next in matthew's path is cuba. nbc's kerry sanders is in santiago. that's on the eastern side of the island. kerry, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning. well, they are definitely expecting to get a direct hit here. they are preparing for a direct hit, especially with that slight westerly turn that matthew appears to be taking. here on the eastern end of cuba, what they've done is what you would expect. they've gotten saws out and they've started cutting down some of the trees that they think the wind will take down, as well as removing some of the

billboards that they fear winds of 100-plus miles could easily send airborne. there are limited supplies here to prepare a home. but what they've been able to do is get what they could find and put those supplies over windows, and in some cases put sandbags on roofs. those roofs made out of corrugated metal that could easily go airborne. it will be interesting to see whether those sandbags actually do much once winds hit 60-plus miles per hour. meantime, evacuation centers here on the eastern end of the island are opening. in guantanamo, more than 500 people have already gone to the university of guantanamo where they will ride out the storm. many of those people have come in from the nearby mountains, as well as along the coast here. right behind me here, they expect the storm surge to be up to 11 feet. the population on the eastern end, about the size of baltimore. more than 500,000, 600,000 people. guys? back to you. >> kerry sanders with the calm before the storm on cuba. we know where matthew is.

the question is where is it headed with being especially approaching the southeastern u.s. al? >> guys, now we are starting to see some convergence and agreement amongst the models. here is the latest on matthew. right now, still a category 4 storm. dangerous. 165 miles south of eastern cuba. 145-mile-per-hour winds. it's moving to the north at 9 miles per hour, so its forward motion has picked up. by wednesday morning, it will have cleared. early wednesday morning. with 130-mile-per-hour winds, still a category 4 storm. thursday morning, it's a category 3 storm. still a dangerous storm battering all of the bahamas. by friday morning, look at how close it is to the eastern coast of florida. we are talking the cone of uncertainty only 270 miles wide. and by saturday morning, it's just off the south carolina coast. as you move into sunday morning, cape hatteras is under the gun. you look at the models, the three models we look at -- the national hurricane center, the u.s. and the euro.

potential impacts -- three to six inches. florida, georgia, storm surge, four feet or more. we move on in to friday and saturday, coastal south carolina, north carolina, five to ten inches, storm surges, six feet above. moving into sunday, the u.s. model brings it right off the shoreline of new jersey and new york. one to three inches of rainfall, coastal flooding, beach erosion. rainfall amounts, we are looking basically at anywhere from five to eight, maybe even ten inches of rain along the south to north carolina coast, guys. so flooding is going to be an issue as well. beach erosion. everybody up and down the east coast has to keep an eye on this. >> all right. thank you so much. we'll have the latest on matthew as it goes through the caribbean throughout the morning. let us turn to politics now and the state of the presidential race, just 35 days to go now. donald trump hitting back at a "new york times" report that he declared a $916 million loss in 1995, and that may have allowed him to avoid paying federal income tax for years. speaking to supporters in

colorado, trump said he brilliantly used laws to his advantage. >> our latest nbc news/survey monkey online tracking poll just out this morning, it is now showing hillary clinton with a six-point lead nationally. 50%-44%. >> clinton will be campaigning in pennsylvania today hosting a roundtable discussion with families, while her republican rival hold a rally in arizona. a week after the state's largest newspaper, "the arizona republic," endorsed clinton. the first time in the paper's 126-year history that it has backed a democratic candidate. a big event tonight, all eyes will be on the vice presidential debate. we've got it all covered. let's start with nbc's hallie jackson. hi, hallie, good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, savannah guthrie. both of these vp candidates struggle with name recognition. our new nbc news survey monkey online poll shows 40% of voters don't know enough about tim

kaine to have a positive or negative impression. 33% don't know enough about mike pence. that will change tonight as for republicans it is the top of the ticket facing new fire on several fronts. ♪ >> reporter: tonight it will be mike pence playing clean-up. on the many controversies donald trump's trying to shake. >> i have legally used the tax laws to my benefit. i have brilliantly used those laws. >> reporter: trump, putting a positive spin on his nearly $1 billion business loss in 1995, revealed in tax filings leaked to "the new york times" which reports the candidate may have gone years without paying personal federal income taxes. but trump, not so kind to others who may have done the same. >> i know people that are making a tremendous amount of money and paying virtually no tax. i think it is unfair. >> i'd love everybody to pay because psychologically i think that's good. >> reporter: now trump's facing fire for something else. the new york attorney general

insisting trump's charitable foundation stop soliciting donations accusing it of not being properly registered in new york. trump's team says the candidate will cooperate with the ag's investigation but is concerned about the political motives from attorney general eric schneiderman, a hillary clinton supporter. clinton taking aim on taxes. >> well, what kind of genius loses a billion dollars in the first place? >> reporter: her surrogates on the campaign trail attacking trump, too. vice president joe biden seeming stunned after trump said this. >> when you talk about the mental health problems when people come back from war and combat and they see things that maybe a lot of the folks in this room have seen many times over and you're strong and you can handle it. but a lot of people can't handle it. >> i don't think he was trying to be mean. he is just so thoroughly,

completely uninformed. >> reporter: trump denounced by veterans groups, defended by his supporters. >> media does a cherry-pick this, they cherry-pick here. it is going to backfire. >> reporter: but after one of trump's worst weeks yet, it is pence who will again be forced to defend the top of his ticket, as tim kaine tries to boost clinton's appeal with millennials, neither with the name recognition of their running mates. >> do you know who these guys are? >> no, i do not. >> any idea? >> no. >> no? nothing? nothing? >> no. >> you? >> i do not. >> reporter: house speaker paul ryan, by the way, now weighing in on trump's tax controversy, telling "the detroit free press" he doesn't think it will be that harmful. and new this morning, the founder of wikileaks is speaking out. julian assange now saying he will reveal certain sensitive information before the u.s. presidential election but not saying what exactly that information may be. matt? savannah guthrie? >> hallie jackson at the debate hall already. thank you. >> what do you say we bring in nicolle wallace. good morning to you.

i don't envy mike pence tonight. he's taking to the debate stage opposite tim kaine in the middle of what is perhaps the worst week and a half for donald trump during this campaign. tim kaine has a lot of ammunition. what should pence's strategy be? >> well, listen, i agree with you, this is the stretch trump has had since he went to war with the gold star family, the khans, at the democratic convention. he might as well bring a mop and a bucket tonight because he is going to spend the whole debate, i think, on defense cleaning up some of the messes that donald trump has made himself. self-inflicted wounds. whenever we see the polls swing the way we did this morning, it is almost always because of this kind of debacle that donald trump says something, then he digs in, he tweets something and makes it worse. >> on the other hand, this is not new work to mike pence. he's basically been doing this on the trail. we've him on the set, we've asked him about various controversies. he has shown himself able to deflect and move on. can he potentially help trump at

this moment in his hour of need? >> he is the perfect yin to trump's yan. he is the calming presence. he's given some gop hand-wringers sort of the reassurance that trump can be steadier and he answers that temperament question. i think when more people see him, i think pete is absolutely right -- people have no idea who either of them are. pence can be a reassuring presence for this ticket. >> trump had a good moment in the debate last week. i think it was when he was kind of labeling hillary clinton as a 30-year career politician, not an agent of change. so that's going to come up tonight. pence is going to hit kaine with that. how does kaine answer that? >> i think you have to lean into it. if you look at the other side of being there for a long time is not being prepared. i think there is a ready response. but pence isn't exactly the perfect messenger for change. he's been in the government for

a very long time. he was in the congress. he is the sitting governor of indiana. i think it is a complicated message. trump is much better suited to deliver a change message than pence ever will be. >> nicolle wallace, thank you very much. you can watch the debate starting at 9:00 eastern right here on nbc. now we move to developments on that new jersey train crash investigation. the ntsb says crews are working 12-hour shifts to clear debris from the hoboken terminal. they still have not been able to extract the recorder from the train's front car. officials say that recorder in the rear of the train that was supposed to store speed and braking information wasn't functioning on the day of the accident. one person was killed, more than 100 injured in last thursday's crash. it is day two of a trial of a georgia father accused of intentionally leaving his 22-month-old son to die in a sweltering car. nbc's janet shamlian is at the courthouse in brunswick, georgia. janet, good morning to you.

>> reporter: matt, good morning. he was a father who decided he didn't want to be a daddy anymore, a man leading a double life. those are prosecutors' claims in this highly charged trial where a little boy died in the back seat of his father's car and prosecutors claim it was no accident. >> reporter: justin ross harris in a georgia courtroom this morning on trial for a crime that, to any parent, is unthinkable. accused of intentionally leaving his 22-month-old son, cooper, strapped to a child seat in his suv to die a slow and painful death on a sweltering 90-degree day. in opening statements, prosecutors say harris wanted out of his marriage and from being a dad. alleging the 35-year-old was leading a double life, seeing prostitutes, messaging women for sex, and sending lewd texts to underage girls. >> messaging on the morning of the murder that he needed an escape from his son five minutes

from getting just that. there's nothing more malicious than what was done to this child's body baking in that car for seven hours. >> reporter: a 16-person jury was seated monday. four are alternates, 11 have children. they'll hear the defense present its opening statement this morning. ross' attorney has previously said cooper's death in june of 2014 was unintentional. >> the truth is, cooper's death was a horrible gut-wrenching accident. >> reporter: harris' ex-wife, leanna, who divorced him after cooper's death, is a witness for both prosecution and defense. her attorney says she believes it wasn't deliberate. >> she never changed her mind that she thinks that this was not intentional, that it was an accident, not negligent. just an accident. >> reporter: prosecutors are not seeking the death penalty. but if convicted of murdering cooper, harris could be sentenced to life. the trial was moved here to the georgia court almost 300 miles from where cooper died because

we're back now, 7:43. growing health concerns over a popular new street lights. >> they are being installed in cities all across the country. but now some doctors are warning those lights could contribute to everything from distracted driving, to insomnia and obesity. nbc's tom costello's been looking into this. tom, what can you tell us? >> reporter: the american medical association is out with this warning this morning. they are saying that that problem sleeping you may have could be coming from that new l.e.d. light outside your house. it could be contributing to insomnia, and that's not all. america overnight blinded by the light, from sleepless seattle to the city that never sleeps. new l.e.d. street lights are popping up and keeping people up, changing the look of l.a. from mellow yellow on the left, to bright white on the right. but the american medical association warns there's another glaring difference. >> we see l.e.d. lighting as a

potential health problem. people have sleep disorders which can lead to all sorts of other problems when they're exposed to a lot of blue light. >> reporter: an ama study suggests blue lights may raise the risk of everything from distracted driving to diabetes, cardiovascular disease, even cancer. but l.e.d. lights are 50% more energy efficient and last up to five times longer. that cost savings could power 5.8 million u.s. homes for a full year. the ama says it is important to keep the lights a warm glow, not the bright daylight white. but the industry argues the ama recommendation is not an appropriate solution for all applications, nor is it supported by current body of research. in gloucester, massachusetts, they're now turning down the temperature on their 2,800 l.e.d. lights. >> we certainly didn't want to choose and install an l.e.d. street light that had serious potential health risks for our residents. >> reporter: l.a. also turned

already starting to see the rain and wind pick up. the big concern from this storm is that up to 40 inches of rain are forecast in some areas and that could trigger deadly mudslides. the death toll right now is at three throughout the caribbean, including a fisherman here in haiti who was swept away. another man is missing. matthew, a violent category 4 storm, is churning through the caribbean, bringing flash flooding to jamaica, eastern cuba is also bracing for a direct hit and the bahamas are on alert, so is the east coast of the u.s. florida's governor has declared a state of emergency. but here in haiti, they are bracing for a potentially catastrophic event. >> gabe, thank you very much. also, there is growing concern among parents and doctors over and illness that can cause muscle weakness, even paralysis, in children. it's called afm. on monday, the centers for disease control and prevention reported 50 confirmed cases so far this year. that is more than twice the number for all of last year. afm has also been linked to

roo right now still a category 4 storm. 145-mile-per-hour winds, moving now north at 90 miles an hour. its landfall of haiti continues its northern track. by tomorrow morning at 2:00 a.m., still a category 3 storm affecting the bahamas. friday early in the morning it is off the florida coast, 270 miles in diameter of the cone of uncertainty. look at how it widens out as we get into saturday morning. sunday morning it is 551 miles wide. in fact, it stretches all the way up to southern new jersey. so we are looking rainfall wise at impacts, coastal florida and georgia, three to six inches. storm surges, four feet above normal tide levels. as we move up the coast, five to ten inches of rain in north carolina. six-foot storm surges, and even into the northeast as we move into next several days. one to three inches along the coast. but some areas could pick up up to five inches, coastal flooding

if you beautiful," embrace your natural beauty, eat clean and harness your power. lindsey, always good to see you. how you doing? >> i'm good. >> how you feeling? you were banged up the last time we saw each other. the last couple years. how are your knees and everything? >> good. good. i took some time off this spring and i'm healthy. just got back from chile, skiing fast. so good. >> one of the last times i saw you, i came out to colorado to see you right after knee surgery. i was shocked by how much you were doing while you were still on crutches in terms of rehab. i remember thinking this girl is not only strong physically but mentally. then i'm reading the book and you say it wasn't always that way. >> no. it definite wasn't always that way. i think i'm strong when it comes to working out and everything i do on the mountain, i feel confident in myself. but a lot of times i really don't feel that confident. i don't know. i have my insecurities, like everyone else. being on the mountain is really the only time i feel -- i don't know -- 100% sure of myself.

>> this book is a little memoir and a lot fitness and diet and all that sort of thing. >> not diet. >> well, not diet. >> i was going to get to that. you say diets don't really work. >> i don't believe in the word. just in general. i mean diets are something you do for a short period of time to try to lose weight. my book is about just making healthy choices, understanding the choices that you're making and doing so in a way that makes you feel better and feel more confident. >> more of a lifestyle. >> yeah. >> have you ever dieted? >> yeah, i have. >> how did that go? >> it doesn't work. i've tried paleo. i was on this crazy high carbohydrate diet. i've been on atkins style diets. none of those things work. >> there is a lot about working out in the book. one piece of advice you say to people, if you still think working out can't be fun, then you just haven't found the right workout. >> exactly. >> how do you suggest people go about finding the right workout and not getting discouraged?

>> it's experimenting. of course, some things when you are working hard it is not always the most fun. but it is finding something that will keep you going back to the gym. if you like pilates, that's awesome. do pilates. if you like doing squats, just go experiment, have fun, try something new. that's kind of what my book is about. just gives you a lot of options and you can try things. whatever gets you going back to the gym and allows you to have fun, that's what its a he all abo about. >> when you became strong and fit, obviously a natural talent as welling wi, you became a cha. one of the things that came with becoming a champion, you became a celebrity. having known you a while, i've always felt you weren't as comfortable with that side of things as the athletic side of things. fair? >> very fair. i'm very confident on a mountain, like i said. i haven't felt like i fit in on the red carpet. i'm just not your typical body

type. i have are insecurities. >> you're self-conscious about that? >> of course, when i'm glammed up i feel beautiful and more confident. but when i go home, i'm like i was sitting next to emily blunt and she is amazingly beautiful and i don't compare to that. it's always been pretty tough for me but i feel like i'm finally getting better at it. >> you said the more time you spend at hollywood parties the less you feel you fit in. did you mean physically or emotionally with that crowd? >> not physically. i have great friends in hollywood and i know a lot of amazing people but i just don't feel like i compare. i'm just bigger, i'm muscular and i don't feel like i fit in. >> i bet you a lot of san jose celebri those red carpets and parties are saying i wish i was more like that than worrying about being super thin that hollywood tends to put on people. >> there is a certain stereotypical body type that they want in movies and it is

cooking and that's -- people always ask me how do i stay from eating all the food on top chef. a lot has to do with the spices. they rage your metabolism. they add flavor without fat and calories. >> the book covers all kinds of spices. we're looking at curry today. we're looking at skap lops. >> today we're using curry powder. these are all the ingredients here that we're going to need to make our dish today. scallops, butter, salt and pepper, garlic, curry. compound butter is a seasoned butter. it's a great way to introduced spices in an approachable way. >> infuses whatever cooking in it. >> we've cubed up room temperature butter that was left on the counter with curry powder. i want you to mash this up.

by the way, curry doesn't mean spicy. a lot of people think that. it doesn't mean spicy at all. use a mild curry powder. you want to mix that up. you're going to put it in a ramekin like this. just keep it in the french under saran wrap. you can also make a log with it. >> will it last for awhile in. >> yes. for a long time. you're putting this in here. let that melt. i want you to let that melt and then put the psychologicscallop. >> pretend it's melted more than it has. i smell that. >> if you wanted to do a mediterranean version of this, all you would do is swap out the curry powder for herbs of provance. you can use it in all your cooking. and don't crowd the pan.

you want to it caramelize. >> while this is cooking down, i'll watch this. you're going to heat some spices. >> yes. ooum going to show you how to roast whole spices. that wakes up all the oils in your cooking. you want a hot, dry pan. you're just going to add caramom, cloves. when you add them, you want to break the pods and get the dark seeds out. >> while you do that, let's look downstairs. we've got them tasting away. >> hoda finished hers already. >> i'm done. i finished. >> don't eat the star right? >> that is. and it's so beautiful. >> star is great to use in soups and stocks. now all i'm doing is throwing these dry whole herbs into this pan which has sot shallots and ginger and chilies. that's it. just three ingredients here cooking. it's going to be done in a minute. and so this i'm going to turn up the heat a little bit more.

we are triple celebrating. we are starting with a fish taco. any white flaky fish will do. what you need to do is just whisk a couple of egg whites until they're nice and stiff. then here we have some flour and cumin and salt. i'm going to add some beer. >> oh! >> this is going to make for a super fluffy, puffy, pillowy batter. after we mix all that, you fold them very gently, not to deflate the egg whites that you worked so lard on making stiff. then this is the batter. it ends up looking like this. then we have the fish that we season with salt and pepper. you're going to dredge them in the flour. >> it is a dredge first? >> a dredge first. shake it a little. and then you are going to sink it in the batter and drop in the oil. now, it is very important.

look at the oil. you want the oil to be hot enough so that you have really happy bubbles. not very angry bubbles or it will burn. happy bubbles. then you have the fish. then we have two things we're going to garnish the tacos with. one is a creamy slaw, very easy to make. and then we have a salsa that's has fried chipotle chilies, pine nuts, little bit of oil and vinegar. these will keep in the fridge. you add the salsa. >> these tacos here are a variation of it. >> these are layered tacos. this is dinner in 15 minutes. you have the bacon that you fry. then you are going to add the meat in the rendered fat. you can use sirloin tips.
