plus, vice president joe biden goes under cover in study or die. >> got the moves. >> are you ready, mr. vice president? >> >> lets rock 'n' roll, man. >> "early today" starts right now. >> it's good to be with you. i'm frances rivera. >> i'm ayman mohyeldin. the eastern seaboard is on high alert as hurricane matthew the strongest storm in years closes in on the u.s. >> overnight, the eye of the storm made landfall in eastern cuba with its strength in tact, a category 4, winds reaching up to 140 miles per hour. eight deaths have been tolled so far. this after it tore through haiti, flooding streets, flattening homes in what could be the worst crisis to hit the nation since the deadly earthquake in 2010. >> each hour, matthew is

creating impacts on the eastern seaboard. officials are taking zero chances. a state of emergency is in effect from florida to the carolinas. evacuations are underway. south carolina, calling for a complete coastal shutdown. >> our goal is to make sure you basically get 100 miles away from the coast. what i will tell those people thinking of fought leaving, if you think you can take care of yourself, then at least think about my law enforcement and my national guards men because they are going to have to be the ones to go out and try and get you and you are putting their lives at stake. >> while we're tracking that, let's go to bill karins. >> things are looking better for new england and the atlantic region. hurricane warnings have been issued north of miami.

four fort lauderdale. those will likely be extended up into the areas of georgia and south carolina later on today. tropical storm warnings for miami. let me give you the latest number and statistics. it's north of cuba. the storm will go over the warmer waters during the day today. you can see the loop of it there. now safely off the coast. we'll have to wait and see how much it with can regenerate. it's now a category 3 storm. that track takes it through the bahamas. then we're going to move it up right along florida's east coast for 24 to 30 hours starting thursday night into friday evening. that's when the most damage and destruction is possible. now that path is paralleling the coast. if it's 20 miles to the east, it may not be that bad. if we shift it towards the coast, it could be devastating. very tough forecast there. as i mentioned, things have improved a little bit. we're thinking off shore tract with less of an impact in north carolina but south carolina and georgia, it will be a close call. this is it a scary scenario.

we could make it out or it could be very bad. >> we'll have to wait and see. thanks, bill. now to the only vice presidential debate of the campaign. it was combative. democrat tim kaine and mike pence squared off in a 90 minute hotly contested show down. most of the night was about defending their running pate, sparring over a whole range of topics from domestic issues to foreign policy. at very times, the issues of trump taxes resurface. >> we have a tax code, for, that actually is designed to encourage entrepreneurship. >> why won't he release his taxes? >> we're asking the question about the business thing. >> i do want to come back on this. >> his tax returns showed he went through a very difficult time, but he used the tax code just the way it's supposed to be used. he did it brilliantly. >> how do you know that? in there first and foremost, donald trump supports our troops. donald trump supports our veterans. >> he won't pay taxes. >> donald trump has paid all the
