along here. looking for blue skies. >> will be warming things up. chilly this morning. you really want a jacket in the north bay. our temperatures at their coolest point, a few spots around the bay area this morning, down to 43 degrees, october in the north bay. clear skies overnight. temperatures warming nicely. mid 70s for the valleys, upper 60s in san francisco. 90s in reach for the weekend. for your first check of your wednesday commute, here is mike. >> not talking rain, but a lot of water in berkeley. overall traffic moving smoothly. this is the eastshore freeway, over there university of kachlt at berkeley. between the two major portions of the east bay, we have grant at university where yesterday afternoon there was a water main break. let me show you these pictures. flooded the intersection, university avenue has one lane in each direction open. that will limit access right now

between cal and the eastshore freeway. they hope to have water restored to everybody by another hour from now. that roadway can't hope until they fill the hole. they may be a few more hours. back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. something to watch there, people in fremont on edge after 15 fires in the last three months. >> "today in the bay's" bob redell joining us from the warm springs neighborhood there. bob, police believe all these fires were set by one person? >> reporter: so far that's what they believe. good morning, sam and laura. the fremont fire and police departments know when these fires were set. what makes the hunt for the arsonist so difficult as they do not yet have a suspect description. these fires have been set from hackemore lane on the north. fortunately no homes or

businesses. first fire in mid july, the 15th this past weekend. almost all the fires have been set on weekends, from saturday evening to sunday morning and sunday evening to monday morning. ten of the fires between 1:00 a.m. and 5:00 a.m. >> it was very scary, and i was driving and i saw burnt trees. it's amazing. we live in a good neighborhood. you don't expect anything like that here, right? >> reporter: police also don't know yet what the motive is as to what would compel someone to set all these fires. reporting live in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." >> thanks so much, bob. in the meantime at 4:33 this morning. millions of people across the east coast are being told to prepare quickly this morning as hurricane warnings go up along florida's atlantic coast. category 4 matthew is moving closer to shore. this is some of the devastation

that was left behind in haiti as 140-mile-per-hour winds lashed the island nation. sadly at least 11 people have died. the storm is set to hit the bahamas later today and the u.s. is expected to be next. this morning from florida to the carolinas people are gearing up, they've been storing water, flashlights and batteries. we'll check in with rob in about 15 minutes. right now this morning parents and students are noticing stepped up patrols at oakland and fairfield school districts. the reason? because of threats made on social media by clowns. police say a twitter account called clown gang one made threats against several campuses. police are not specifying which schools. this is happening across the country. ten states are reporting similar threats. another shooting in san francisco. a man was shot at a busy intersection in the mission and the suspect still on the loose.

according to police it happened at the intersection of 15th and euclid street. over the weekend. measure b rolled out four years ago and has been the focus of controversy ever since. over time costs in the meantime have tripled for the san jose police department. officers now average about 450 hours of overtime each year with some shifts still unfilled. voters are going to decide on measure f on the november ballot which is a compromise initiative that would negate some of measure b's rollbacks. >> 4:35 right now. people living in the sinking and leaning millennium tower have nothing to fear in the event of a powerful earthquake. that's the word from a consultant hired by the tower's developers. it concludes despite findings by

this was quite a sight in new jersey yesterday. look at that, two homes virtually flattened in a gas explosion. it was all caught on tape in patters patterson, new jersey. reports came in early yesterday morning when first responders arrived, about 9:00 eastern. they could hear the hissing sound from the gas leak. firefighters immediately started to evacuate all the people in the buildings there. they managed to get everyone out within 15 or 20 minutes before those buildings exploded. staying in new jersey, investigators have successfully pulled a second data recorder from a deadly train crash in

hoboken. that first black box turned out to be black. the second recorder is now being tested. investigators have also recovered front-facing video and a cell phone belonging to the train's operator. back in the may, a man accused of torturing and killing cats is awaiting his fate. yesterday robert farmer showed no emotion as he pled guilty to 21 counts of felony animal cruelty. he was arrested last year after surveillance footage showed him trying to round up kalgts in a san jose neighborhood. he's due in court for sentencing facing up to 15 years in prison. investigators say it will likely cost $2 million to repair a historic church destroyed in the fire. there was severe damage to the roof and second floor. the congregation continues to hold services at a church across the street. investigators do not believe it was arson. 4:44 right now. one game, two very powerful

lucky enough to go to that game. >> the klay thompson one. >> right. and with a hockey stick. >> normally you'd say temper expectations. it's a pregame. don't temper expectations. turn up the heat here for the season. not yet? >> bay area, big changes as we head towards the weekend. all eyes still on what's happening with hurricane matthew overnight. it did weaken as it crossed the eastern coast. winds down to 115 miles per hour. forecast to strengthen on approach to south florida. here are the active hurricane watches and warnings up and down the florida peninsula there. the bahamas going to get a big impact from the storm. you the see the projected path approaching wiech as we get into thursday night. curving toward the north towards south carolina and north carolina. notice the northeast might be dodging the first round of the

storm. i say first round. overnight half of the computer models now send this storm on a loop off the southeast coast. so something we'll have to watch closely. we could be dealing with the storm for a while as it makes a run towards florida. it could make a second run back around the bahamas as we move through the next 48 hours. right now temperatures in the 40es and 50s outside. for the afternoon, highs in the mid 70s today. a little warmer than the highs we saw around here yesterday. upper 60s in san francisco, clear skies making for a chilly start to the morning, but a nice mild afternoon. across the north bay, numbers in the upper 70s, same story for the tri-valley and walnut creek as the temperatures climb a few more degrees from yesterday, and for thursday and friday, here is where things will be warming into the weekend. a ridge of high pressure keeping rain out of our neighborhood. you'll see that. we'll continue to head off to the north. now temperatures are climbing for places like san francisco. still thinking we'll get to 80 degrees on saturday. 70 starting tomorrow.

look at the inland valleys starting tomorrow into probably low 90s on saturday and still staying in the mid 80s through sunday. >> we're getting to try out our whole wardrobe. looking toward the bay, you can drive the whole bay and not really have a problem. over in the altamont pass, west 580, typical slowing. we're focusing on berkeley. want to make sure you heard that university avenue is open for both directions over at grant. that's between cal and interstate 80. that's the eastshore freeway. that's a critical portion of the roadway. yesterday about 12:30 is when the water main break happened. it has reopened. limited access. hopefully all lanes open by the bulk of classes starting. no delays reporting for b.a.r.t. about 25 trains on time now. we're looking to the south bay where traffic flows well, this is 101 at 680.

it may sound counterintuitive, but the experts we talked with about this hacking problem says one way to make sure the systems are secure is to make the computer code that runs voting systems open for public inspection. the problem with the current systems in use today are that they are old and antiquated. they date back to the 2000 presidential election and that hanging debacle in florida. you remember that. those machines are based on old pc computer technology. experts say they are vulnerable right now to hackers. the same experts tell us the way to combat that is to adopt new machines that rely on open source code to run them. in other words, computer code that everyone can check out for bugs, vulnerabilities, even hack them themselves and fix those hacks. san francisco and los angeles counties have already agreed to spend millions of dollars to begin developing and using those systems for the next presidential election. meantime, california secretary of state tells me precautions

researchers say wearable fitness trackers are unlikely to boost long-term physical activity. researchers say after six months people with no cash incentive didn't increase their activity and nearly half were no longer wearing the device. >> show me the money. >> cash reward group did increase its activity at first but became more sedentary when that was removed. hot air balloons over new mexico, a spectacular sight. thousands of people have been waiting patiently to see this. the albuquerque international balloon festival had to be canceled because of high winds. the day before two balloons hit power lines and grounded the show. dozens of balloons are back in the sky with some of the brilliant colors, an amazing sight to see. i talked to you about my bucket list a lot.
