merge over toward 680. we have the build coming out of pleasanton. i was concerned about that. it doesn't look like the crash affects your tri-valley commute. a slower drive as well. water main repair work, university is open with limited access. we'll talk more about what's going on in just a couple minutes. >> mike, thank you very much. new this morning, police right now are searching for clues on san jose's sysco campus after a thief or chooefs ditched a stolen sausage truck there. a rep says someone drove that truck through a fence and off the plant's lot in sunnyvale. police briefly chased the truck but lost it in san jose. it woended up at the sysco facility where the driver knocked over several light and fire poles. police in fremont say they need the community's help to

catch the people or person responsible for setting multiple fires. people there, bob, living on the edge. >> reporter: good morning, laura. for police and the fire department trying to find this person, what makes it difficult is they do not have a suspect description. warm springs boulevard is right behind me from hackemore lane on the north down to mayton way on the south of warm springs boulevard. every time it's been a bush, tree or garbage. no homes or businesses. the first fire was set mid july, the 15th fire this past weekend. fremont police say almost all the fires have been set on weekends from saturday evening into sunday morning, and between sunday evening into monday morning. ten of the fires have been set between the hours of midnight and 5:00 a.m. >> that was scary because i was

driving and i saw the trees -- burnt trees. it's amazing. we live in a good neighborhood. we don't expect anything like that. >> reporter: investigators still don't know what's motivating this person as to what would compel them to set all these fires. live in fremont, bob redell, "today in the bay." when you get to school this morning, parents and students will notice more security in the oakland and fairfield school districts. all this is because of threats made on social media by clowns. police say the twitter account called clown gang one made threats against several campuses. the oakland unified school district is investigating the threats posted on social media. students at two different schools warned administrators about those posts yesterday. >> we deployed our resources, vetted out the threat. we called fbi, joint terrorism task force. we take the threats seriously. >> clearly. police are not saying which two

schools specifically are mentioned. the fairfield school district also received threats naming four schools. police say while the threats are not credible, they are taking them seriously. this is happening across the country. ten states are reporting similar threats. >> a developing story we're watching closely as hurricane matthew churns in the atlantic taking aim at the bahamas. the powerful storm has already proven deadly. there's concern this morning it could hit the u.s. right now people from florida to the carolinas are wiping out store shelves as they begin storing water, flashlights and batteries. those living in the storm's path are being told to move at least 100 miles inland. matthew has pounded cuba and haiti with 140-mile-per-hour winds. we'll have much more on the storm's path and the potential impact to the u.s. adds we check

anywhere rob may ada in about 15 minutes. happening right now, mike just mentioned this in his traffic report. drivers are preparing for delays at university and grant avenue in berkeley which is flooded out. this video just into our newsroom showing workers rushing this morning, trying to get a water main break fixed before the commute kicks in. right now university avenue only has one lane open in each direction and grant is completely shut down. no word on when those roads will be reopened. new this morning, another shooting in san francisco. a man was shot at a busy intersection in the mission and the suspect is on the loose. this happened just after 8:00 at the intersection of 15th and mission streets. the victim suffered life-threatening injuries. over the weekend, there were four deadly shootings and a stabbing in san francisco. moving on to decision 2016, for 90 minutes, back and forth, a little hard to hear at times as vice presidential candidates tim kaine and mike pence went

head-to-head for their first nationally televised debate. tim kaine interrupted frequently to bring up donald trump's tax returns. >> why won't he release his tax returns? >> we're answering the question about the business thing. >> mike pence pushed kaine on hillary clinton's e-mails. >> if your son or my son handled classified information the way hillary clinton did, they would be court marshalled. >> that is absolutely false. >> the moderator couldn't get a word in at times. the debate covered the economy, russia, immigration, police shootings and abortion. that was the first and final debate between kaine and pence. we'll hear more in a live report from washington, d.c. at 6:30 here on "today in the bay." emotional tribute this morning for a fallen san pablo officer. you may remember this, officer ken zink was killed in a motorcycle accident last week on his way to work. students and staff gathered in

his honor yesterday. they gave signs and cards to the family. zink served as a school resources officer at helms middle school. a huge loss to that community. bones found in napa county belong to two missing brothers from santa rosa. they were found in a remote hillside in buck canyon last year. investigators san jose they belong to mario and florentine know avandana. investigators say the brothers may have died after being trapped by a wildfire that happened in july of 2014. evacuations are over and more help is on the way. santa clara county supervisors approved emergency funding to help the rebuilding process from the loma fire. this is allowing homeowners to apply for government money. right now that fire is 92% contained. it burned nearly 4500 acres and 12 homes. crews hope to have the fire fully contained by sthtd. this morning nbc bay area responds to a san jose woman who had problems with a used car.

>> consumer investigator chris chmura is here to explain. courtney troy bought a used 2007 escalade this past may. she said the dashboard flickered with warnings about her tires and suspension system. over the next several weeks she took the escalade in to south county chrysler asking the dealer to fix the problem. she said she couldn't get a clear answer from the dealer about what was wrong. she said the problems persisted. courtney reached out to us and we called south county chrysler. it took back the escalade and gave courtney a check for $4,000, her down payment, plus loan payments she made. it paid off her loan, a total savings of $24,000. when we asked south county chrysler it said courtney's resolution had nothing to do with nbc bay area responds. here is something courtney and all car buyers can consider. california law allows used car buyers to purchase a contract cancellation option. this gives the buyer two days to

donations to repair a historic church nearly destroyed by flames. it is going to take a community-wide effort and a lot of donations to repair a historic church destroyed by flames. on friday fire ripped through the first congressional church in berkeley. investigators say it will likely cost $2 million to make the necessary repairs. the congregation continues to hold its services at a church right across the street. investigators do not believe this is harson.

today people accused of setting an antioch home on fire and spraying racial slurs on the wars is set to enter pleas in court. police arrested the two last month. investigators say surveillance video shows one of them throwing molotov cocktails at a home. police believe the attack stems from a dispute between the suspects and one of the people who lives in the home. in paterson, new jersey, a sight to behold. two homes virtually flattened in a gas explosion. that's what it looked like, all caught on tape. reports of a gas leak coming in to 911 early yesterday morning about 9:00 eastern. when first responders arrived, they could hear the hissing sound from the gas leak. firefighters immediately sprang into action. they've evacuated the building and all the people there managed to get out minutes before the buildings exploded. staying in new jersey right now, they are still looking for a cause. investigators have successfully pulled a second data recorder

from the wreckage o of a deadly commiter train crash. investigators have also recovered front facing video and a cell phone belonging to the train's operator who claims that the train was not speeding. startling news out of silicon valley. yahoo! has been accused of reading your e-mail for the nation's spy agency. >> scott mcgrew, after the whole snowden appeal, we were told this kind of thing was over. >> apparently not. we knew the government had tapped into e-mail systems, they tapped into google's computers. that was without google's knowledge and that was years ago. we were told this does not happen anymore. in this brand new case, reuters reports not only did yahoo! know there was software in the system that was reading e-mails for the nsa, yahoo employees actually wrote the software. reuters say ceo marissa meyer knew about it, but yahoo! security did not, and some people quit when they found out. the spy system was uncovered by

reuters reporter joe mann who specializes in covering security issues. he writes, it's likely the fbi or nsa approached other internet companies with the same demand, but microsoft and google said, if that happened, they would refu refuse. yahoo! said in a written statement, yahoo! is a law abiding company which complies with all the laws of the united states which really doesn't address the question. this isn't the first time yahoo! has been skapt liesed by an e-mail problem. back in the fall of 2007 yahoo! founder jerry yang was criticized by the u.s. congress after the company turned over user e-mails to the chinese government, and some dissidents were arrested. here is late congressman tom landis. >> this behavior was inexcusebly negligent behavior at best or deliberately deceptive behavior at worst. >> we will continue to cover

thursday evening and friday curving up towards the carolinas. here is the big forecasting challenge. right now it doesn't look like the northeast is going to see much from the first run of the storm. now the commuter models are trying to loop that hurricane back down towards the bahamas. stay tuned. could be dealing with that storm for a while. now, this morning, calm views around the bay area. bay bridge looking nice, 54 degrees currently? san francisco. clear skies in san jose at 52 degrees. we will see mostly sunny skies today. patchy low clouds moving down the coastline. rebounding into the 70s this afternoon. upper 60s for san francisco. peninsula temperatures in the low 70s and mid 70s around the north bay today and a few upper 70s returning to the forecast around walnut creek and antioch for today. check out san francisco, as we head through the fleet week weekend, gorgeous weather. we'll see numbers approaching 80 on saturday. that means our valley locations,

especially the tri-valley and south bay have a good chance of getting close to 90 degrees. downtown san jose could see upper 80s by saturday. things cool down as the sea breeze returns late on sunday. >> downtown san jose has air conditioning as well, to many of the activities over here. the south bay we see the slower drive, looks like speeds are starting to recover northbound 101 at tremble, where the crash was reporting, we see speeds starting to improve at the scene. the merge off 87, as the traffic by the airport and the build off 101 at 680. typical pattern for the south bay, a little more slowing at san jose airport than you'd expect. crash at stephenson looks like it's not a problem, 880 toward the dumbarton bridge out of the south bay. southbound heading through fremont for the nimitz and into flee montefiore 680 both move smoothly. the earlier crash out of livermore and pleasanton not causing problems there. over towards the bay bridge, a smooth flow on our speed

we'll show you the view outside around san jose. clear skies right now. numbers in the 40s, chilly start, south bay microclimates down to 46 degrees, los gatos at about 48 right now. as we go through the morning, you'll want a jacket through the morning. as we head through the afternoon, pleasant temperatures, 90s as we approach the weekend. now to see what's happening with your bay bridge commute, here is mike. >> we have, of course, your typical patterns around the bay. one more spot to watch for the south bay. first northbound 101 at tremble where chp has arrived. that distraction with flashing lights and the crash at trimble adding to the distraction. more slowing for that section of san jose. the bay bridge we have the backup. the metering lights are on. the beautiful sunrise. also looking at the lights right here. they're backed up past west grand avenue. nothing past the approach. this is quite unusual.

clowns threatening bay area students. two school districts are beefing up security. >> pete suratos is live in oakland. this is a troubling trend across the country and now in our own back yard. >> reporter: good morning, laura and sam. indeed we have seen this around the country. and in response to this, the oakland unified school district is increasing patrols at two of the skoochlts they have not named those schools yet. the social media posts with these creepy clowns was first brought to their attention by two students in the district at those two schools. they're not the only district dealing with this. they're also dealing with it at the fairfield school district. the twitter account is clown gang one. the account has been deleted. that account made threats to a few schools including grange middle school and fairfield high. it's important to note that nothing came of it. we're seeing a lot of these cases around the country, in fact, police are saying locally

matthew continues to churn through the carbene. that deadly storm is set to hit the bahamas. the storm pounded cuba and haiti with up to 140-mile-per-hour winds, washing away roads with fast-moving floodwaters. at least 11 people have died so far. the next stop could be the united states. right now people living from florida to the carolinas are preparing themselves for the worst. >> i've been through three hurricanes before, so yeah want to be caught off guard. >> it gets hectic as soon as the storm gets closer and the cone starts narrowing in. >> highlighting the urgency here, several states have declared a state of emergency as mathew approaches. people in the hurricane warnings from miami all the way up to daytona beach are being told to move at least 100 miles inland. snuffing out an arsonist, 15 fires in the past three months in the same area of the east bay. it's happening in the warm springs neighborhood of fremont. it's been going on since mid july.

police say every time it's been bushes and garbage set on fire. so far no homes hit, but that's what neighbors are afraid of, that this arsonist will change his target. >> there's an online neighborhood watch where we have a group where people are concerned and they mention what we can do to make the neighborhood safe. >> fremont police say almost all the fires have been set late at night on weekends. so far police have motive or suspect. >> a man accused of torturing and killing cats is awaiting his fate. yet robert farmer showed no emotion as he pled guilty to 21 counts of felony animal cruelty. he was arrested last year after surveillance footage showed him trying to round up cats in a san diego neighborhood. farmer is facing up to 16 years in prison. 6:35 right now. nearly 500 fewer officers on san jose streets. that's one of the new numbers

from voter impacted cuts. measure b rolled out four years ago and has been the focus of controversy ever since. over time costs have tripled. officers average about 450 hours in over time every year with some shifts still unfilled. >> you don't see your family. you come to work. you don't know when you're going home. it fatigues your body in a job that can't take that sort of risk of not being at the top of your game. >> measure f will be decided in the november ballot. a break in a string of violent robberies in the east bay. this morning the contra costa district attorney is connecting a group to home invasions in danville, fremont and livermore and potentially to a robbery last week in orinda when two young men attacked a couple in

>> reporter: the fact checkers busy overnight. they say kaine oversimplified donald trump's stance on nuclear weapons obtained by other countries and penn undervalued how much money the clinton foundation gives to charities in terms of their programs. they also say he ignored some things that donald trump actually said, things he denied during that debate last night. >> interest iing to see them. as wildfires surge across the nation, the white house is making a new push to increase funding to fight those fires. in the budget here ending last friday, congress provided an additional $622 million to the u.s. forest service. that money was used to offset firefighting costs which have ballooned due to climate change and drought. a dangerous time right now for fires. we are getting a break in the weather. rob, cooler weather again today, but that's going to change. >> typical for fall, a bit of a roller costar ride in the

seven-day forecast. look at the pre sunrise views, 45 degrees in napa. that's a gorgeous view from sbrun know mountains. 53 degrees, clear skies. some of our peninsula micro climate, 45 in redwood city. south bay mid 40s. downtown san jose you also are looking at clear skies this morning. temperatures in the upper 40s moving probably about 30 degrees of warming between now and the numbers climbing. those are san francisco temperatures near 80 by saturday. our valley seeing numbers today in the 70s, 80s tomorrow. closing in on 90. feeling more like summer to start the weekend. >> we have water to cool some folks off. it's not a good issue in berkeley. we'll talk about that after i show you the rest of the bay. the south bay build is on typical, except for 101 at trimble whereby there's a crash on the shoulder and additional activity.

joint venture silicon valley took a look at the numbers and found there are more and more households bringing in $150,000 or more, but those who don't make that much are moving out of the bay area. joint venture said last year 14,000 silicon valley households -- 17,000, correction, who are under the magic number of $150,000 left. another 16,000 in the east bay left because they were not making $150,000. by on the other side of the graph here, the same amount of time, families that make more than $150,000 grew. $36,000 in silicon valley, $37,000 in the east bay. it's not so much that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. it's that the poor are leaving the bay area and the wealthier are moving in. other news, the "wall street journal" says this morning twitter will take bids for a buyout later this week, putting itself up for sale.

neighborhoods on either sides of warm springs boulevard, having set 15 fires since july. fremont police tell us they're pretty consistent as to when they do it. it's typically on the weekends between saturday evenings and sunday mornings and sunday evenings into monday mornings. ten of the fires have been set between the hours of midnight and 5:00 a.m. the first was in mid july. the most recent this past weekend. >> it's been quite consistent and it's been so many times it has happened and in the same warm springs area. there is an online neighborhood watch where we have a group where people are concerned and they have mentioned what we can do to make the neighborhood safe. >> reporter: fremont police are still looking for this person. what makes it difficult is they have yet to have found a description of this person. they don't know what the compelling this person to set
