dramatic win in flushing against the mets. today in the bay starts now. for many folks, a happy thursday morning. i am sam brock. >> i am tired, i am laura garcia-cannon. let's look at the morning commute. an accident on both sides of 680 at mckee. check in with mike. >> crash activity here, all lanes reopened for the freeway. take you down to san jose where all of this is going on. very early had a deadly crash southbound. still police activity until the coroner arrives. i am guessing 6:00 for that to happen. northbound had a drunk driver that exited at mckee as well, that activity still off the off ramp but the ramp reopened. we also have debris, 85 at 17. i will check out what's on the roadway. we don't have rain, roadways are dry.

what do you have? >> clear skies weather wise with no low clouds. the morning off to another cool start around the bay area. 44 degrees. low 50s in san jose and east bay. by afternoon, watching 80s make a come back today. still planning on some 90s for the weekend. another thing we are watching is a strengthening hurricane matthew over the bahamas on the way to florida. likely strengthening to category four later today. the latest on impacts are coming in ten minutes. that hurricane is really intensifying as you mentioned, rob, it is moving closer to florida. look at the radar on the upper left of the screen, on the right, some of the water pouring in. the largest system in nearly a decade to hit the area. >> it is frightening for everyone on the coastline. today in the bay sarah rosario

joins us. people are taking cover. >> reporter: sam, laura, good morning. here in daytona beach it is a dry start to the morning, beautiful. still windy. this is the calm before the storm. there are evacuation orders from florida to the carolinas. with matthew headed this way, inching slowly toward the u.s. coast, many are prepared for what's to come and not taking any chances. along the southeast coast, it is time to pack up and get out. >> smart thing to do is board it up and pray. >> reporter: 12 million could be in the path of hurricane matthew. in florida this could be the biggest evacuation in state history. governor rick scottish used a dire warning. >> this can kill you and we cannot save you. >> reporter: people along the coast filling their tanks. some drivers say fuel is hard to find. state of emergency declared in florida, georgia and carolinas. in south carolina, both lanes of

freeway traffic are diverted from vulnerable areas. >> the plan is to head to colombia, stay with a co-worker, wait out the storm, hopefully come back and be glad i left. >> reporter: millions of people are racing to get out of the storm path, while matthew moves closer to the coast. the worst of the storm is expected to be over daytona achrea sometime late tonight through friday afternoon. something we're going to keep a close eye on. local businesses, schools, government buildings are all closed for the next couple days. live in daytona beach, sarah rosario, back to you. >> preparations under way to get everyone out. thank you very much. we will stay on top of hurricane matthew's path all morning. meteorologist rob mayeda will give us another update in 15 minutes. following breaking news in the east bay where there's a major police presence in a

hayward neighborhood after a person was shot and killed overnight. >> bob redell is live at the scene. what are investigators telling you so far, bob? >> reporter: good morning to you laura, sam. we know one person shot and killed, another person taken to the hospital we are at the intersection of seventh and bee. if you look beyond this sedan crime scene tape, you can see a wrecker. they're getting ready to load the car where at least one of the people was sitting in when they were shot and killed. it happened around 11:30 last night. the car was pulling into the driveway when at least one of the people was shot and killed. another person described as being linked to the incident was also injured and are being treated at eden medical center. this is all the information we're getting from hayward police. as far as being suspects, police haven't indicated whether they made any arrests or whether they're looking for someone. ght now one person shot and killed, another at the hospital

at 7th and bee on the 1700 block of bee street. they're telling us they expect to be here for quite some time. live in hayward, bob redell, today in the bay. >> pretty active scene behind you. thank you very much, bob. people on heightened alert after creepy clown threats took a scary turn for an east bay mother. threats of violence taking over social media. some law enforcement call it a hoax, but the hoax reportedly became real for a mother in concord. she told police a man dressed in a clown outfit tried to take her baby. >> he had a wig on, black, but smiled and said oh, and took her hand and grabbed it, looked like he wanted to kiss but didn't. he touched her arm instead. >> she fought back and the clown ran away. police are taking it seriously.

coastline. here's the path of the storm, tonight, 8:00, crossing west palm beach. may strengthen again to a category four, racing up i-95 to jacksonville before turning over the ocean. much of florida seeing wind gusts above 100 miles per hour. category four hurricane on impact, could see storm surge up to ten feet on the coast. that's the rise in sea level as the storm comes ashore. rain totals ten inches in spots. moving from south florida to north carolina. for the bay area, a calmer view. we don't have clouds. the reason temperatures are chilly. 40s and 50s outside. in the afternoon, 70s and 80s in south bay. close to 70 in san francisco. north bay and tri-valley, highs in the low 70s. notice the seven-day forecast, san francisco is close to 80 on saturday. and wednesday rain possible. that's a pleasant change after a summer like start to the weekend, valleys could be near

thursday morning. street lamps won't slow down the new bus line. the mta kicks off work october 24th. news comes despite a push to preserve more than 200 street lamps they planned to remove. supervisors this week voted to preserve the historic looking lights. nbc bay area responds to a fair fax woman with a problem frig. >> and no one to fix it. consumer investigator chris chmura joins us with a frustrating story. chris? >> reporter: good morning. jacqueline stone bought a refrigerator from sears three years ago, it recently stopped working. since it was under warranty, she called sears and scheduled a service appointment. she says the repair person didn't show up. she scheduled another appointment. again, no show. two weeks later, she says the refrigerator was full of mold. she called sears and asked to replace it but the company said

hurricane matthew. unfortunately strengthening. winds up to 125 miles per hour and weather models unfortunately bring this storm as a category four up the florida coast beginning later tonight. >> as the map shows, right up the coastline and beyond. millions of people are bracing for the worst as that intensifying hurricane matthew is bearing down on the southeast coast. all flights from bay area to south florida cancelled. evacuation orders from south florida up to the carolinas. matthew right now is moving through the bahamas and expected to get stronger as it approaches the states. people in florida are scrambling to bunker down or get out before the storm moves in. >> my plan is to head to colombia, wait out the storm, hopefully be glad i left. >> hurricane matthew left at least 25 people dead in its wake after it hit the countries of haiti and cuba. we have breaking news we are following in the east side as

well, sam. a deadly shooting in hayward before midnight on 7th and bee street. police say someone was shot and killed in a car as the driver of the car was pulling out of the driveway. another person taken to the hospital injured, no arrests so far. bob redell will join us with a live report at 6:00 a.m. sheriff's deputies in santa clara have a new way to keep guns out of the wrong hands. today in the bay live where they unveil that plan this morning. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. they'll be in all the deputy cars and squad cars and even cars they take home. show you this picture tweeted by the sheriff's department. you can see the lock box, 11 by 8 inches, made of thick steel.

a senate bill was passed last week, and the way it works, it requires deputies to lock handguns in the trunk of the squad car and personal take home cars or secure it in a lock box where no one can see it. the point of these comes after several incidents involving guns being stolen from law enforcement vehicles. the most high profile incident last year when stolen guns were used in the murder of kate sometime lee. if an officer violates this requirement, could face a fine up to $1,000 and that law takes effect start of next year. >> thank you very much. 5:33 on thursday. a dispute among two juveniles left one stabbed at taco bell in the east bay. the two started to fight about 5:00 at the restaurant on

springdale by stone ridge mall. officers tracked the suspect a short distance away after setting up a perimeter. he is now in custody. the victim will recover from injuries. uc davis researcher identified as the american woman who died tuesday when protesters in ethiopia threw stones at her vehicle. 30-year-old sharon gray was going to attend a plant biology meeting. anger has been brewing in ethiopia since sunday when 55 died in a stampede during a religious festival. police are blamed for sparking that stampede. two sexual assaults in a matter of weeks on stanford campus. now authorities say they have one suspect behind bars. the first assault was two weeks ago in a graduate dorm room. over the weekend, campus police sent out a safety alert, reporting another alleged rape happened in another dorm room. last month, governor brown signed tougher rape sentencing

laws. investigative unit exclusive, morgan hill fitness trainer accused much sexual assault related crimes by clients may be getting back in business. they shut down his gym in june after he was arrested in april. our unit learned he registered a new personal training business outside morgan hill. records indicate wolf smith received a business license in early august. the investigative unit spoke with law enforcement, officials man to shut down the new gym. he faces 13 charges that include child molestation. his attorney says he is innocent. a former client is speaking out to nbc bay area area to warn more clients. >> i just felt like it was really important, he's been doing what he's been doing for years and years and i don't want someone else to have to go through what we went through. >> former client wants to know why wolfsmith was able to apply for and receive a business

manhunt. a convict on the run this morning. a mugshot to show you of michael christopher jones. he was under house arrest when cut his ankle bracelet off and disappeared two days ago. he was in custody for petty theft and other minor crimes, not considered dangerous, but sonoma police department, sheriff's department want him back. quarter to 6:00. b.a.r.t. is paying out. the transit agency is settling wrongful death suit brought by the family of a contractor killed in 2013. two engineers were inspecting tracks when struck and killed. the trainee operating the train that day. investigation found the operator supposed to be supervising wasn't present, could have been texting on a cell phone. southwest airlines at the center of a federal complaint for removing an arabic speaking cal student from one of the planes.

in april, cleared of wrongdoing after speaking arabic on the cell phone. the airlines claimed another arabic speaking passenger alerted them of a terrorist reference. yesterday they filed a complaint with department of transportation and are asking for a full investigation. southwest has not issued a response. nsa contractor behind bars, accused of illegally removing highly classified information. prosecutors say harold martin iii stored it in his maryland home and in his car. the fbi arrested him in august after agents say he admitted to taking government secrets. his attorneys say he never intended to betray his country. one vaccine shows great promise fighting zika virus. scientists at kansas state bio security research institute developed the vaccine. it is awaiting human testing, may provide five years of protection against zika.

won't roll out until 2018 at the earliest. good news for women that work the night shift. an overnight schedule does not increase risk of developing breast cancer. past research suggested irregular sleep patterns can cause a variety of health problems. british scientists found women who worked night shifts for decades were no more likely to be diagnosed with breast cancer than those with no history of night shift work. better medicine meant longer life spans generally speaking, although the average life expectancy which has consistently risen since 1900 does have a cap. people are not living to the age of 200. scientists at the albert einstein college of medicine say the human life span does have a ceiling which has already been reached. they calculate the average max life span is 115 years old with the absolute limit being 125. the oldest living person in history, jean coleman, died in
