oc: nats trt:3 down on parts offlorida-- as mag th s a killer hurricane still bearing down on parts of florida right now, as matthew makes its presence known along the state's atlantic coast. this morning, we are tracking what is currently a category 3 hurricane that could effect millions of people. plus, a brothel busted in the east bay. and it's all because of alert neighbors. what officers found when they made their way in. plus, taking to the skies. san francisco fleet week kicking into high gear. going on with hurricane matthew for the folks in florida. good morning. >> weakening slightly overnight, and this video just in from near daytona beach, as the outer bands of hurricane matthew bringing hurricane-force wind gusts across the florida coast. and offshore, we've been seeing some wind gusts up above 120 miles per hour. and there's a live view, as the heavy rain and storm surge now begins to approach at the center, just about 50 miles offshore. the latest that we have on the storm. you can see the center there just off the coast of cape canaveral, florida, where all the locket rocket launches and space-x, of course, launching there from merit island. you can see how the outer bands and the eye wall itself brushing just across cape canaveral there in florida. moving off to the north and west around daytona beach. heading into the afternoon, the threat begins to shift off to the north around jacksonville. you can see the storm center very close to the coastline there, bringing a big storm surge, we think, of perhaps 7 to 11 feet in some local locations there, as high tide is also occurring right around the early afternoon. and you can see as this storm

still is a category 2, curving up to the north around the georgia atlantic coast, and eventually off the coast of south carolina. coming up, we'll have a look at some of the landfall projections for this storm and some of the heat coming up for the weekend, coming up in a few minutes. let's go back to some video of what we're seeing is on the ground. this speaks a lot to the strength of hurricane matthew. right now it's a category 3. this is from vero beach in central florida. a category 3 hurricane, currently sitting as we just saw just off the coast of cape canaveral. more than 300,000 homes and businesses have no power right now. and the hurricane has killed at least 283 people in haiti. >> one area hit particularly hard overnight is titusville, florida, that is east of orlando, and that's where nbc's donnie schwartz is. >> reporter: here in titusville, the winds are definitely picking

up. you're starting to see debris here on the roads. a lot of these are palm fronds. we're not going to go any further, because we've seen palm fronds blowing off and they're very, very heavy right now. it's hard to see, but over here there's a marina, there are a lot of different boats that are getting battered right now by this storm. and just down the road, there is a mobile home park, down this road, there is a senior citizen's home that has been evacuated, about 100 senior citizens have been taken to, we believe, orlando. but right now, these conditions, as you can see, are getting much more, much more hairy. so we're going to fall back a little bit. we'll have an update in just a bit. >> you can really see the winds there, everything they're up a against. so far this morning, there are at least seven canceled nonstop flights between sfo and various airports in florida. there were 14 flights canceled yesterday. there were no direct flights from florida or orlando to san jose. and we've learned miami

international airport is actually open this morning. many bay area emergency responders packed and ready to help. the san francisco bay area disaster medical assistance team is already on alert, waiting mobilization. team members don't know where they'll be going yet, but they're ready to set up a portable emergency room if the need arises. >> anything from going into an emergency room that's just overflowing with patients and they just need more staff to help to setting up like a civilian version of a m.a.s.h. unit. they are packed and ready to go. pg&e crews are also packing up. 130 equipment and line workers hope to leave for florida later this morning. >> and laura, as so many folks here have close friends and family members that you're worried about in florida, we are closely tracking the path of hurricane matthew. we will all morning long. for continuing live coverage, head to nbcbayarea.com and we'll have live reports from florida throughout the course of our newscast. new this morning, back in

the bay area, house fire in san jose that may have been no accident. the fire broke out about 9:30 last night at a home on 17th street, near heading in highway 101. firefighters are being tight-lipped now about the extent of the damage, and even who was living in the home. but they are saying the cause of the fire is, quote, very suspicious. pete suratos is at the scene gathering information. leal have a live report at the top of our next hour. hiding in plain sight. alert neighbors led police to a brothel in the middle of a neighborhood. police raided that home and found what they believed was a brothel. inside the house was very little furniture, a mattress and suitcases filled with women's lingerie. police arrested three chinese women who tried to escape out of the back. detectives are still trying to figure out if the brothel is connected to human trafficking. happening today, a police officer on the wrong side of the law. one of the officers implicated in the sexual misconduct scandal in the east bay set to be arraigned later today. oakland police officer gee

serrano is accused of interacting with jasmine, who used to be known as celeste guap. the woman claims she had sex with up to 30 police officers from various bay area agencies. >> and represejasmine's lawyers an $18 million claim against the city of san francisco. the filing cites three police officers. sfpd is now investigating those allegations. well, this morning, also, the threats of so-called creepy clowns have now spread to san jose. we know of three threats that have been made at schools in the east bay union high school district. superintendent sent out a letter there to parents alerting them, even though all the prior threats have turned out to be hoaxes. the district, police say, have

to take every athlete seriously. police in san mateo are also on alert, as are schools in fairfield, oakland, and antioch. it looks like the open air urinal in san francisco won't be going anywhere anytime soon. a judge has dismissed the lawsuit filed by a religious group seeking to have the urinal removed. the new urinal was part of delores' park's major renovation that was completed this year. opponents argued it violated privacy laws and sat a little too close to a nearby union line. all right, laura, they are back and better than ever. you want to get as close as you can to get a close look at this. the blue angels are back with their mid-air practice going on today. you can take a look at the gravity-fight angels zooming past the san francisco skyline. the blue angels will put on two shows this weekend for san francisco's fleet week. there's lots to do here. get your friends, get your family, come and check it out. you can watch the parade of ships, as well, which starts

a policeay the suect -- is ==chryon== an arrest in the stabbing of a palo alto woman, and police say the suspect is the woman's sister-in-law. police say jane yenjing seen here is facing murder charges. what police can't figure out is a motive. the stabbing happened back in july at a home on creekside drive. a family member found the victim, a 65-year-old woman, dead inside her home. police say evidence led them to the victim's sister-in-law. a pet killed while under the care of a professional. now a former petsmart groomer accused of animal cruelty is in court today for a pretrial hearing. juan zurate is going to face felony animal abuse charges when his trial starts in november. investigators say a dog suddenly

died in his care last may. zurate worked as a groomer at the san mateo petsmart and that dog suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung. this shook up a series of communities and now six suspects are arrested in a rash of violent home invasions in the east bay and they're expected to make their first court appearance in only a few hours. investigators say men targeted at least four east bay homes since march, that includes this one caught on surveillance in fremont. the men are charged with home invasion, burglary, and in one case, a carjacking that touched off a high-speed chase. coming up, registered to vote? great! now they need your help at the polls. why you may be standing in line longer if people don't step up to help. hurricane matthew hasn't change

sda a quarter to 5:00 on your friday morning. and hurricane matthew hasn't changed any of the logistics or planning yet for sunday's presidential debate, but the candidates are certainly talking about it. donald trump's mar-a-lago estate club right in the path of hurricane matthew. trump said he reached out to florida's governor and to his employees there, imploring them to stay safe. he also spoke at a new hampshire town hall last night that trump insists was not practice for sunday's town hall debate. in the meantime, hillary clinton was spotted at a hotel near her home in new york. a shortage of volunteers could mean long lines for voters in santa clarita county on election day.

the santa clarita county needs workers for more than 2,000 election positions, 1,000 bilingual volunteers are also needed. crews have now cleared the wreckage from last week's commuter train crash in hoboken, new jersey. this as we await more information from one of those black boxes. yesterday you can see the train's cars were towed from the station. investigators now say that the train sped up to twice the 10-mile-an-hour speed limit in the half-minute before it struck the end of the rail line and went into that platform. the train's engineer pulled the emergency brake less than a second before impact. one woman on that platform died. the train's engineer says he doesn't remember the accident. this morning, officials are confirming that an aircraft wing found on an island in the indian ocean is, in fact, from malaysian airlines flight 370. that flight disappeared in march of 2014 while flying from kuala lumpur to beijing. several pieces of wreckage have

washed ashore since the plane vanished with 239 people onboard. a rare look at powerful eruption of hawaii's kilauea volcano on the big island. this is video from the u.s. geological survey showing molten lava splashing up on the crater's walls. let's go back to our main story this morning. breaking news, these are live pictures. given all the rain, you can see the palm trees being pushed aside there in what are no doubt strong winds. this is a category 3 hurricane at this point, is hurricane matthew, as we've watched it largely avoid south florida, rob, now we're tracking its path as it kind of sits off of cape canaveral. >> it's been interesting to see if the storm, if the path, about 50 miles offshore. some of the commuter miles at this point, had the storm inland. but now we're seeing the outer

eye wall there around cape canaveral, florida. you're seeing some of the strongest winds so far now approaching merit island, daytona beach, where that live shot was happening. we can show you some of the impacts i believe around seminole, florida. we've been seeing the impacts on the coast, houseboats pushed ashore there. you can see it as the storm surge begins to move, some of the water inland. some locations, we could see the water levels rise as much as 7 to 11 feet. and you can see the action there from around seminole, florida. let's go back to the forecast, as we show you, the eye wall right around cape canaveral. wind speeds of 120 miles per hour, moving northwest at 14. the path will still mean that areas to the north around daytona beach, up towards jacksonville, that is where the eye will be sitting just offshore as we head towards the afternoon. and rainfall projections now actually higher, up towards south carolina, north carolina, could see rain totals above 10 inches of rain and wind gusts at times around the florida coast above 100 miles per hour. around the bay area this

morning, we've got chilly temperatures, at least for the most. 40s and 50s outside right now. san jose, 53 degrees, but our afternoon, look at those numbers, mid- to upper 80s in the forecast today. even san francisco now, upper 70s in the forecast. peninsula temperatures in the 80s. and we'll see mid- to upper 80s from the north bay and out towards the tri-valley. and the weekend forecast still looks plenty warm for fleet week. look at that. temperatures close to 80 degrees tomorrow and we will see those temperatures inland, we think, close to 90 degrees saturday and sunday, before temperatures begin to cool as we head into monday and tuesday. and speaking of cool, wednesday and thursday, mike, we could be tracking rain for the morning commute. nothing like that, though, this weekend. >> it's good for the weekend, and also a good chance to get those new wiper blades if you discovered that uh yo needed them. the sprinkles came in before. over here, we don't have much of an issue. on the peninsula, i want to give you a long look ahead. this is for tonight at 8:00, they're going to close the broadway on-ramp over there on the peninsula going through burlingame and close two

northbound lanes. those will reopen tomorrow morning, but the broadway on ramp will not reopen until april. you'll use millbrae avenue until that time. we'll talk about that again. over here in the south bay, we had one incident northbound, 880. as you cross over 280 and hit stephens creek boulevard. but that has crash has cleared and so has any of the slowing we've saw through that area. the south bay itself moves very well. the bay bridge toll plaza no problems here, it's friday, we should see a later start and a slightly lighter build there. back to you. in business news, hume is not only impacting florida, it's also having an impact on wall street. for more on that, we turn to ladon dowdy live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning. >> good friday morning to you. futures are pointing to a lower open this morning on wall street ahead of the big economic news of the day. the monthly jobs report, and economists are looking for another solid month of hiring in the month of september, which could boost the case for the federal reserve to raise interest rates by the end of the year. we're also keeping an eye on the

british pound today. it plunged in mere minutes overnight before recovering on what some people are calling a mini flash crash. now falling 12 points yesterday to 18268. the nasdaq slipping 9 to 5306. meanwhile, snapchat could be going public. "the wall street journal" reports the parent company of the popular messaging service is considering a possible ipo as soon as next march and the deal could value snapchat at $25 billion or more. and that would be the biggest offering since alibaba's ipo back in 2014. also, wall street is closely watching how hurricane matthew impacts florida and other states in the southeast. analysts estimate over 250,000 homes in florida are at risk of damage from storm surge and repair costs could top $50 billion. stocks of insurance companies and roofing suppliers, home improvement stores, and window makers all moving higher on thursday. and back in 2004 when three major storms hit florida, sales

sexual assault and authorities police arrested him, prosecutors charged him with sexual assault and authorities shut down his gym. >> and yet the investigative unit found that a south bay fitness trainer is back in business in a brand-new city. liz wagner joins us this morning to explain what's going on. liz, good morning. >> guys, we're talking about this man, david wolfsmith. clients, including a 13-year-old girl, alleged he touched them inappropriately multiple times. authorities closed his morgan hill gym at the end of june, but we discovered just a month later, he opened a new gym in san jose. according to city records, on august 1th, wolfsmith registered a new personal training business with the city. now the santa clara county dach d.a.'s office plans to shut down wolfsmith's new gym in the name of public safety. we spoke to a person who wants to know why he was able to register a new business without any red flags going up. the city will issue a business

"today in the bay" starts now. and a very good friday morning. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> and i'm sam brock. let's get right to it right now. the latest out of florida this morning with hurricane matthew barreling, basically tracing the coastline here. this is a live look from orlando, where that city is still seeing some effects from the storm, even though it's not right on the coast. this is the most powerful storm to hit florida in almost a decade. millions of people from georgia to south carolina and florida have all evacuated. hundreds of thousands of people are without power right now and that is not expected to change for weeks. elsewhere, the caribbean has already felt catastrophic impacts from this hurricane, with more than 280 people dead and counting. >> let's check in with meteorologist rob mayeda. he's been tracking the
