path for days. >> we've been seeing south florida areas, south of west palm beach now, over the danger zone, but we've been seeing the storm, with an eye wall about 50 miles wide, category 3 sustained wind of 120 miles per hour. again, slowly approaching the coast now. as you can see here, right off the coast of cape canaveral, florida, and the outer eye wall approaching merit island, cape canaveral, winds sustained anywhere from 60 to 88 miles per hour, closer to the eye itself. that's where the hurricane hunter aircraft still detecting wind speeds up to 120 miles per hour. a category 3 storm. these areas up to jacksonville today will see not only the intense winds and heavy rain, but storm surge as the wall of water kind of gets pushed inland from the coast. could be assi high as 7 to 10 ft locally across the northern coast of the atlantic coast there of florida, as we head through the afternoon. back to you. >> rob, thank you. those are the conditions that we're watching right now. we're getting a glimpse of what it's like to be in florida at

5:04 am
far as the potential cause of this suspicious fire. but we did speak with one witness who had this to say. >> a guy walks past me, paying no attention to him, i said, "hello," just chilling and i hear something click and clack and so i looked back up and i see the guy at the corner of the house and see his arm in motion, and then he just bolts down the street. >> reporter: surely some information that can help with this ongoing investigation. san jose police as well as the san jose fire arson unit will be handling this investigation, and at this time, they have not provided any new updates. we're live in san jose, pete suratos for "today in the bay". >> okay, pete, thank you very much. 5:04 right now on your friday. the real dangers of fake rifles. a san ramon women sees a group of boys playing and was convinced they had real guns, so she dialed up 911. as it turned out, the rifle wasn't real, but her call was a chilling one and police say the

5:19 am
actually on approach here within the next 90 minutes or so. that's why things are steadily getting worse around the daytona beach. notice the counterclockwise rotation of those outer rain bands and that circle on the lower right is the outer eye wall of hurricane matthew, about 50 miles wide, moving in on daytona beach. and it has been right along the coast, edging right near cape canaveral, florida, and you can see how the movement continues to be up here towards the northwest as we go through the morning. category 3 storms means around the eye wall itself is where we're seeing those winds of 120 miles per hour. now, the fact that the center has been offshore for most of the night means that those strongest wind speeds have been staying offshore, but still gusts from 60 to about 88 miles per hour along the coastline, not too far from daytona beach. and that area of low pressure, the center, we think is going to stay right along the coastline. so not only the strong, gusty winds, but again, as that area of low pressure moves and we see the wall of water kind of getting pushed in along the coast, as those winds move in counterclockwise, local areas, coastal inlets and bays could see storm surge of maybe up to 7

rain, perhaps, out towards the north bay. in the meantime, summerlike weekend ahead around the bay area, good for fleet week, and you can see those valley temperatures pretty hot on saturday, trending a little cooler as we head towards monday and tuesday. then our attention turns, we hope, to some rain chances on the increase as we head towards wednesday and thursday. >> all right, rob. we're looking over here, right now, a very easy friday, light commute, as you would talk about. the peninsula moves and we'll elastic have something there as well. looks like there's some debris across all lanes. chp is there, so some flashing lights and we'll track that and get over towards the peninsula with that look ahead for tonight. at 8:00, they're going to close down two northbound lanes of 101 and the broadway on-ramp, just south of the airport. that on-ramp will remain closed, as we've talked about, all the way through april, you'll have to use the millbrae avenue on-ramp. we'll talk about that for monday morning's commute.
5:22 am
but that starts tonight at 8:00 and the on-ramp will not reopen until april. so far, so good for the rest of your commute, as we look at the south bay, a nice easy flow of traffic. we'll show you the bay bridge and backup, which is just starting to form for some of the cash lanes and only a couple of cars for each side. the friday light commute continues here. and a live look at the south bay, where we'll show you the maps. there are indeed cars coming through the area. they're just at speed, this is 101 north of 680. >> looks like people are cooperating, at least for now. >> coming up, nbc bay area responds. >> i'm consumer investigator chris kimora. not every problem we solves ends up on tv. today, some of the cases we have quietly closed and the money we have saved, next. tackles your complaints every d.
