wicked winds, potential mudslides and floods. we're tracking the storm as it whips in this morning. what you need to know before you head out the door. "today in the bay" starts right now. a very good friday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. let's go right to our micro climate weather alert coverage. >> we're looking at rain across the north bay. light drizzle across the south bay. you can see we've got storm ranger fired up this morning. we'll take a live shot outside first. there is satellite and radar. as i mentioned, storm ranger fired up. there you can see denoted by the red scan this morning, that is exclusive to nbc. we have it sitting on mount allison. you can see we'll talk about that scan drifting out across

parts of the bay area, the finest resolution in rainfall data. this is slight stuff you see denoted by the light green. there's the key to the north noting that rain. again, all this stuff from fremont towards san carlos, even 101 near san mateo, very light mist and drizzle. again, that's the finest rain we can find out there right now. the heavier stuff is starting to push in the north bay. pushing into santa rosa by 6:00 in the morning. then as we head towards 7:00 in the morning, we'll see the push into san francisco and by 9:00, 10:00 for the east bay and the south bay. that's the timeline. temperatures will be cool. we'll continue to track the sky cams and watch for any wet roads as you get out this morning. mike is standing by with a quick check of your morning commute. mike, what are you looking at this morning? >> so far the roadways are doing well. anthony, your note about the mist and the drizzle. all right, that's enough to keep the oil from settling on the road making things slippery. use caution today. the road speeds are moving well.

we want to talk about the rails. b.a.r.t. had a 20-minute delay. they're now recovering. there was some sort of equipment problem in oakland. as the rain comes in, it will slow things down a little bit for safety's sake as well. right now travel times throughout the east bay approaching the maze. eight minutes on 580 towards the maze. let's check in with "today in the bay's" pete suratos live as the storm moves in to the bay area. you're up in petaluma right now. how is it looking? >> reporter: off highway 101, not much rain so far. as both anthony and mike mentioned, we're feeling a light drizzle. you can see behind me as cars are coming this way during the morning commute. you want to go for new video where you have rain rain. in the north bay there are areas that are prone to flooding. over in mill valley.

the morning commute is slowing because of wet weather conditions. we had a chance to talk to chp about this. here is what they had to say. >> we saw that a few weeks ago beginning of october where we had decent rainfall in the north bay. the chp was going from call to call all day long. you could see it firsthand, people weren't slowing down and following at a safe enough distance. when you get the first rains of the season, you have to back it off. >> reporter: a light sprinkle here in petaluma right now. chp mentioned they're not adding more personnel as a result of the storm, but they want to make sure they are visible to make sure drivers slow down. live in petaluma, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> now to major concerns along our coastline, dangerous conditions setting in as we take a live look at pacifica where erosion concerns are mounting.

whipping rain already pounding the coast. you can see right now more coming up on that in our next half hour. "today in the bay's" bob redell will be live there with an update as well. homeowners in the burned out area of the recent loma wildfire have big concerns with this coming storm. the area is more prone to erosion and the thread of mudslides as well. cal fire has been surveying numerous properties in the fire zone. it can leave some of the homes in danger and risk the potential of a big mudslide. >> it could be several feet. it would certainly elevate the streamflow in the channels to a point where it could damage structures. >> could it take out a house or an out building? >> absolutely. >> do you see any you think are at risk? >> yes, we do. >> since the loma fire was contained, cal fire has been trying to shore up burned out land susceptible to slides. the fear is more time is needed. we'll be staying on top of the storm's progress all morning

long. stay with "today in the bay." we've got complete weather coverage. we'll download our sfree nbc bay area app to get doppler radar right to your smart phone. our first pictures of a wildfire burning in the tahoe basin. officials have ordered evacuations of more than 500 homes. we're told highway 89 is shut down from the plaser county line in tahoe city to south lake tahoe. as soon as we get more photos from the fire, we will bring them to you. at 5:05 in the south bay. fire crews rushing into action putting out a house fire just a block away from live oak high school in morgan hill. we brought you live chof raj in the last half hour. the fire broke out about 4:00 this morning at the home near hill road and east main. investigators say no one has lived in the home for about ten years and it was completely empty. new this morning, a very

close call for a man in the east bay. take a look at this video. the driver of that truck lost control, hit two parked cars, then smashed through the garage of this home on lone tree way in antioch. someone was inside the home sitting in the living room. >> one occupant inside at the time. the vehicle just missed him. hit a bearing wall and the occupant was on the other side of it. >> police found the driver sitting in the cab of the truck unhurt. he was eventually arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. santa clara university leaders looking into two acts of vandalism at a residence hall. in one case someone wrote hateful messages on a bulletin board targeting the lgbt community. both incidents happened early saturday. campus safety officers are reviewing the incident and surveillance images to try to track down the vandals.

a local crime is attracting national attention. today prosecutors are expected to announce whether hate crime charges will be filed in the violent attack of a sikl man. the victim was stopped at a red light when he says two men through a beer can at him and beat him through the car window. so far the two men are facing charges of felony assault. that could change today. 30 advocacy groups in across the country are calling for harsher charges. three men are in police custody in connection with a deadly double shooting in richmond. police arrested richard taylor, and two others. investigators have not said which men they believe opened fire. they do say weapons involved have been recovered. one man died, a second man injured at the shooting which

had at la moin valley view park. investigators believe the shooting was tied to a drug deal. back to our micro climate weather alert this morning, taking a live look outside at petaluma as the storm is darting to come to the north bay. we have pete suratos there who had reports of drizzle coming down. we have live doppler radar from our storm ranger all morning. you see all that green coming towards us. to continue our coverage, let's check in with meteorologist anthony slaughter. >> you can see the storm system barreling towards the west coast. we have rain and moisture sitting off the coast and lots of it. right now we're just getting started. a lot of it is very light out there. we have storm ranger fired up. it brings the best resolution as far as radar tracking goes. you can see we're starting to ski a lot of mist and drizzle near the radar site. that's because it's right on top of mount allison which is a few feet up in the air. it's right where the rain is

starting to fall. you can see near santa rosa, sonoma, showers up there as well. i want to zoom in first on some of the light showers we're seeing through sunol, livermore, through the altamont pass. all this light green is light rain. some of the heavier colors, the yellows and orange, that denotes rain coming downality a pretty good rate, right along 101 towards petaluma. this is something we'll be watching. this will be the main band that comes through this morning. the other thing you'll notice, winds have begun to gust. the golden gate bridge has seen wind gusts up to 30 miles per hour. you'll notice the rain, heavy stuff, starts to push into the north baby 6:00, 7:00. by 7:30, 8:00, we'll be watching the rain push into san francisco and oakland. by 10:00, we're expecting widespread rain. you'll notice the yellows and orange denote some of the heavier pockets which could create ponding on the roadways. as the rain comes through, we'll look at the potential for gusty

winds which could bring down power linetion or tree limbs. that's something we're watching and the reason we're in a micro climate weather alert. jackets are a good idea as well. we're talking mid 60s for daytime highs today. round two is headed our way for saturday and sunday. we'll explain that coming up in a little bit. mike, how is it looking on the roads this morning. >> so far, so great for your friday morning commute. anthony, your timing look looks it's coming in right at the bulk of the commute. right now we're looking at the rails. b.a.r.t. recovering from 20-minute delays. equipment problems in oakland have been resolved. rain as it comes in may cause delays as well and slow the trains down. it's typically a safety measure. your travel times are looking great. at their minimum, southbound along the peninsula airport to hillsdale about six minutes, almost seven. coming up, one last visit to

lamar for more than four years say the quest for justice begins monday. jury selection starts finally in the murder trial for garcia tsh torrez. he's accused ofd killing the teenager in march of 2012. prosecutors say they linked garcia torres to lamar's disappearance through dna evidence found in his car. new details to share with you this morning in a south bay prostitution sting. nbc bay area first showed this to you on tuesday night. members of a task force set up safe meetings at a hotel with prostitutes and johns looking for a possible human trafficking victim. one of the men arrested in the sting dropped off the underage girl at the hotel with the intention of selling her for sex. he's now being held on $250,000 bail.

hillary clinton wrapped up a whirlwind day in california with elton john music. last night she attended a big money fund-raiser and performance. unfortunately, no video of that. we can show you her motorcade arriving at the taping of an appearance on the ellen show. it will air at 3:00 p.m. on nbc bay area today. earlier in the day she visited san francisco and met with senator barbara boxer and dianne feinste feinstein. >> he has attacked immigrants, african-americans, latinos, people with disabilities, pows, muslim muslims and our military which he's called a disaster. >> donald trump meanwhile is blasting recent accusations against him at a rally in

profitability after gaining independence last year from hewlett packard enterprise which is now an information tech firm. for the news before the bell, susan lee is live at cnbc world headquarters. good morning, susan. >> good morning, scott and laura. lots of data to end the week on this friday. retail sales expected to rise after falling last month. we have producer price inflation. it could be ticking up a little bit with consumer sentiment out for the month of october. we're looking for it to possibly rise. on the earnings front, busy morning so far. all three big banks reporting today, citigroup, wells fargo and jpmorgan chase easily beating the streaks. stocks did rally from the day's lows, the dow ended down 45 points but it looked a lot better at the close.

trading off 18,098. nasdaq off 25, 5,213 is the number kicking off this friday session. verizon is waving a red flag that maybe yahoo! deal might not be going through. the phone company hinting that it might have to be shelved. yahoo!'s announcement that it suffered a massive hack attack makes the giant less attractive to purchase. as if it couldn't get worse for samsung, they're predicting $3 billion in profits to be wiped out over the next two years after it ditched the exploding galaxy note 7. the phone recall is one of the gig guest and most expensive in history. it's paved the way for apple to snatch up its market share. that's the latest from cnbc world headquarters. back to you. >> we are definitely in a micro climate weather alert. let's take you live to san

francisco. you can see the gray skies moving in. also, anthony, we are now starting to use something -- a mobile radar system mounted on a truck you can put anywhere in the bay area you want to. >> not only is it radar, but it attracting things like ash in the atmosphere that you usually can't see on some of the regular radar. very important in the bay area because we get mist and drizzle almost all the time. i do want to show you the storm system as we zoom out. we've got quite a bit of moisture to get through before we're actually done with the storm system. as we zoom in, you can see storm ranger, there it is, right across mt. allison which is about 2,600 feet in the air. you send out the radar as it scans the skies, you can see we're starting to see the fine mist and drizzle moving towards the east bay. this is prefrontal

precipitation. it's common when you get storm systems moving through. it's happening near livermore, sunol, fremont, sunnyvale and towards portola valley near 280. across the north bay is where we're seeing heavier rain, moderate but not any of the yellow or reds that we're used to seeing. you'll notice sonoma starting to see the yellow there, 101 approaching san rafael and mill valley as we speak. the other thing you'll notice, winds are started to gust from 20 to 30 miles per hour at the coastline. sees gusts across the south bay at the current hour, up to 20 miles per hour. you'll definitely notice things changing out there this morning. we want to show you what's going to happen as we move forward. this is 6:00, 7:00 in the morning even 8:00 across the north bay. we'll see heavier pockets push into san francisco around 8:00, 9:00. we'll move over towards the east

baby about 10:00. all this pushing out of the north baby 10:00 and 11:00 and by lunchtime across the north bay. we get that rain shadow effect across the south bay. it's not going to be as big as a storm system for places like san jose as it will be in the north bay and san francisco. we will still have rain with us even by 5:00 near morgan hill, gilroy and santa cruz. this will be an all-day rain event for most of us. we're waiting for a lot of the heavy rain to push in. we're talking mid 60s. you'll need the jackets through the rest of the day. mike, what are you tracking on the roads? >> right now nothing going on as far as major accidents. that's great. we're tracking the weather conditions. let's show you the bay bridge toll plaza where there's no backups just yet. as we take a live camera over at the bay bridge toll plaza, we should show traffic flow smooth through the span. sometimes as the wind kicks in, that camera kicks out.

hotel near popular west sajose good friday morning to you. it is 5:26. a plan to build an 11-story hotel near a pop shopping destination is getting resistance from people nearby. developers want to build the mall across from west fairfield valley mall, located on stephens creek boulevard at the corner of south clover avenue. the "mercury news" reports at a planning meeting critics voiced their opposition. concerned about a spike in traffic, fewer parking spacetion and the size of the hotel. construction may start by next summer. more than $5,000.

whipping winds and heavy rain ahead. we're getting you prepared for the first big storm of the season as "today in the bay" continues right now. good friday morning to you. thanks so much for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. this storm is expected to bring our first significant rainfall in months. we have a team in place, but let's start with our meteorologist anthony slaughter. >> good morning. watching the rain right now across parts of northern california. it's still making its way through the north bay. we're seeing light stuff across the north bay and south bay. storm ranger is fired up, our radar exclusive to nbc.

it's on a truck that is mounted on mt. allison. we're picking up on the finer light rain across the mountains of santa cruz. across the north bay is where we're seeing the leading edge. there's our front. that will produce the heavy rains as we go towards the morning hours. i'll show you the futurecast. by 7:00, a lot of that stuff in the north bay, the yellows and oranges denotes the heavier pockets of rain as it moves into san francisco after 8:00. by 9:00, 10:00 is when most of the bay area will see the rain, approaching the south bay by lunchtime. we'll still have this rain in the area, even by 1:00 this afternoon. it's not until about 4:00 or a:00 wen we wrap up the rain showers. a lot of that across parts of the north bay. as far as temperatures go, it's going to be a cool day. we're talking 60s across the entire bay area. the rain will work its way from north to south. we'll talk about our second storm that's going to impact the weekend for saturday and sunday

coming up next. in the meantime, let's toss things over to mike getting you outside to work on time. >> a great morning for the drive right now. watch late in the commute. the bay bridge toll plaza showing backup forming at a few of the cash lanes. the live camera at the toll plaza shows the bottom of the screen, the left approach and right approach, those are cash sections starting a little build. we have travel times as well. coming toward the area, at the minimum. interstate 80, 14 minutes. back to you. the storm we've been watching hitting the north bey as we speak. "today in the bay's" pete suratos has more from petaluma this morning. >> reporter: we're in petaluma off highway 101 as the rain starts to come down. you can see drivers heading down the 101 getting their morning commute going. we want to go to some video in windsor where you see the rain and wind whipping down as the storm rolls in to the north bay. of course, we start to see flooding into the north bay.

especially at the park and ride in mill valley. important for drivers, these roads are slick because of these wet weather conditions. here is what chp had to say about it. >> that's dangerous enough as it is, but when you add the wet roads to it, the average car is 60 miles per hour, it takes 130 feet to stop. you add the rain, it will take a little longer. if your eyes aren't on the road, it's a dangerous mix. >> reporter: it's important to make sure you're slowing down. even though the storm is starting to hit in the north bay, chp says they're not going to add more manpower because of this storm, but they will continue to be visible to hopefully slow drivers down. in petaluma, pete suratos for "today in the bay." >> dramatic drone video. at the danger. >> reporter: good morning, scott. i can tell you within the hour we've been here, the winds have certainly picked up. the national weather service issued a coastal flood and high surf advisory from point reyes to down here in pacifica all the way south to big sur. it's hard to tell, looking out there it appears it's quite possible they've seen those heights. this being the first big storm of the season, seeing people who live in pacifica are worried about the large floods. drone footage shows the erosion from about a year ago. you might recall one apartment complex was red tagged last winter along the clief side and evacuated. another taken down. by the beach, city workers finished fixing the prom nate damaged by last year's el nino

storms. the city voted to spend another $3 million. >> look for the funding, go for the grants. we have to worry about the safety and health of our citizens. >> reporter: the city still needs to pick some of the seawall. they're partnering with the army corps of engineers to get that done. high surf advisory. especially here in pacifica. live in pacifica. . 5:367. homeowners in the burned out area of the recent loma fire have big concerns with the comi coming storm. "today in the bay's" rick boone live at cal fire headquarters in morgan hill with an update for us. good morning, rick. >> reporter: good morning. you know, there's no rain here at this point at this hour. of course, we're hearing the

latest from our meteorologist. cal fire is on standby this morning mainly because the homes they saved during the santa cruz mountain fires, those homes could be an alert for mudslides. as you said, here is the cal fire sign. we swing the camera around, we've got i guess about eight garages, those are fire trucks behind there. that's very important. if that does become an issue that they have to go in the mountains again to be there for the folks t to make sure the homes don't fall down the mountains, that's when the trucks will go into action. if it becomes a downpour, we'll try to save as many as they can. cal fire surveyed about 20 homes in an area near the fire zone. homeowners who lived there for over a decade say they still see hot spots and can only hope the pile of ash covering the hillside doesn't slide. >> last time i saw the road, there was three inches of dust on top of the road from all the

coming into our newsroom. officials say they've ordered evacuations in more than 500 homes and there are voluntary evacuations of another 500. within the last few minutes we learned 200 acres have burned so far. we're told highway 89 is shut down from the plaser county line in tahoe city to south lake tahoe. as soon as we get more photos from the fire and more information, we'll bring it to you. 5:39. people who live around uc berkeley have been warned about a recent string of armed robberies. police say there have been at least a half dozen since saturday on the north end of campus. in five cases a man with a gun targeted victims just walking down the street. in one case two armed men startinged three women. investigators say the suspect descriptions are very similar for each crime. it is 5:39. -- taylor smith is en -- the

25-year-old worked with an after school program at ida price middle school in san jose. the district is working with san jose police and the ymca during the investigation. back to our micro climate weather alert. we have live doppler radar. they have several radar installations. the red one is from our storm ranger. it's a truck-mounted radar that achbt any slaughter can move anywhere in the bay area where he thinks it's needed. >> not only can i do it, any of our nbc stations can. in fact, when we need the radar, we get it here across the bay area. when l.a. needs it, they get it as well. it's all about northern california. we've got rain pushing in. you can see where we had our radar scan. storm ranger on mount allison this morning. it gets you the finest resolution, bringing you seven times the speed as far as any of

the other national weather radar sites. we have you covered across the bay area. you can see the light stuff from fremont, livermore, the sunol grade. it extends over towards palo alto and just north of sunnyvale. this is light rain. really not the big concern. the bigger concern is still to our north bay. that's where we're seeing heavier pockets denoted by the yellows. overall, that's the rain that's falling right now. as we move the futurecast into motion, you'll notice a lot of this activity won't push into san francisco until about 8:00 and then it will become widespread by 9:00 and 10:00. we'll talk about how much we'll get out of this. plus round two this weekend. mike, how are the roads looking? >> looking all right. the wet roads in the north bay may be presented an issue. it's just reported a single car spinout southbound 101 approaching spencer. oftentimes when the rain comes

anony slaughtis good friday morning. it's 5:45. welcome back to "today in the bay." this morning we're waiting for one of the biggest storms to hit the bay area this morning. anthony slaughter in for kari hall tracking the system moving into the bay area. >> we want to show you our storm ranger that we've got fired up this morning. it is exclusive to nbc and you can see it's got a radar with it. in fact, that radar is one of the best radars in the business. we've got one of the finest resolutions as far as radar tracking goes and some of the fastest revolutions as far as data scans go. you can see radar to the left. that's what we're tracking this morning. heavy stuff in the north bay and yet to make its way to san

5:00 this afternoon. people of oakland can attend but will watch the speech from special hearing rooms. it will be broadcast on city of oakland's website as well. 5:47. a two-day summit begins today in san francisco on marijuana. it includes health, science technology investment and retail. it kicks off at the hyatt regency hotel. teachers in alum rock are making their frustrations known. dozens of teachers and their supporters protest ahead of last night's school meeting. they say no progress is being made in contract negotiations. the president of the teacher's association tells us they have several concerns and that their needs must be met. >> we are trying to bargain for

lower class size and an increase in our salary and medical benefits. >> the teachers association says their pay is among the lowest in santa clara county. the council on american islamic relations is holding a local election forum in fremont today. tonight at the free month mosque, candidate runs in the election will be there. the islamic council is releasing a nationwide poll. 72% support hillary clinton with 4% for donald trump. the rest considered undecided for voting for third party candidates. a disabilities rights group is suing san francisco-based uber over wheelchair access. the lawsuit claims the mobile ride hailing company violates disability laws by not making more wheelchair accessible vehicles available. while uber did not address the lawsuit itself, the company did say it's committed to, quote, increasing mobility and freedom for all riders.

bay. we're starting to see light rain across the east bay and south bay. i do want to show you the entire storm system as it's making its way in from the pacific. seattle, portland dealing with the core of the system. you can see the leading cold front pushing into the bay area as we speak. you heard earlier we have a storm ranger fired up on mt. allison in fremont. we're picking up on lighter raindrop let's falling from the sky. very light mist and drizzle, but just enough to get the windshield wipers going. when we had the heavier rain, that's across the north bay. this is where we had the leading edge of the cold front that will squeeze out all this moisture as it moves through. we're seeing heavier pockets near sonoma north and west of snap pa. a lot of this will fill in and become more widespread. in fact, by about 6:30, this is what the radar is expected to look like. heavy stuff across the north

bay. you'll notice yellows and reds there. heavier pockets of rain which could create ponding on the roadway, especially once we go towards the heart of the rush hour. by 10:30, dealing with the heavy rain across the east bay and the peninsula and south bay. even by lunchtime, 1:00 this afternoon, still dealing with the showers. it's in the going to be until about 5:00 when they push out. you'll notice today's forecast, numbers looking cool. mid 60s for daytime highs across the entire bay area. a few peaeks of sunshine. but generally cloudy skies through the day today. round two pushes in for tomorrow afternoon and evening. put the futurecast into motion, you'll notice here we go again. tomorrow, this time, it's going to be in the evening hours. so tomorrow evening by about 5:30, north bay, getting wet once again. by 6:00, 7:00 in the evening tomorrow, that's when we expect round two to push in. generally speaking, here is what we're expecting from the first round of rain today, lighter amounts across the south bay,

just about .1 inch for places like livermore as well. you get towards the north, oakland, san francisco, looking at pretty decent amounts of rainfall. if you get heavier pockets of rain, we could be talking more than an inch. as we head into tomorrow's storm system into sunday, but you head farther north, places like napa could get more than one inch of rainfall. in the mountains, easily could see two to three inches of rain where some of our reservoirs like. near mt. shasta, they're expecting six inches. let's switch gears and talk to mike about the morning commute. >> friday commute is light. volume is not a problem. we'll talk about the speeds in the southbound. anthony has been showing all the activity in the north bay. just where we're seeing that rain, we also have reports of a single car crash south 101 at spencer. crews arrived to help them.
