wildfire right now in south lake tahoe. this is the first video into the scene. there are evac aches. we have that information into our newsroom about that. talk about a close call. a man just sitting on his couch as a truck comes crashing through his bay area home. the charges the driver is facing as "today in the bay" continues right now. a very good friday morning to you. we've been talking about it all week. the strongest storm to hit the bay area in seven months packing quite a punch. good morning and thanks for joining us. i'm laura garcia-cannon. >> i'm scott mcgrew in for sam brock. we have our live doppler ray star. we are in a micro climate weather alert this morning, not only for the rain hitting the north bay but for what's to come as that storm hits south. we have you covered from every angle as you get ready to head out the door this morning. right now let's get right to meteorologist anthony slaughter. we have today's storm, but

another one coming right behind it. we haven't been able to find any big rain across the past seven months and now we're getting it all at once. the storm situation stem moving in as we speak. another one will move in as we head towards tomorrow evening into sunday. here is what we're looking at right now. we can see satellite and radar fired up. we have storm ranger in place on mt. allison. that's bringing the best resolution and radar tracking this morning. you can see a lot of it lights up making its way into the south bay right now. this is light stuff making its way into downtown near the foothills, east bay area, alum rock and towards sunnyvale. that's light rain, probably enough to get the ground wet and activate the windshield wipers. look what's coming to the north near ukiah. that stuff is making its way into the north bay. that's the heavy rain we're waiting on. we'll time that out and let you know when it will arrive and how much we can see from the first storm coming up in a little bit. mike? >> the light rain picked up by

the storm ranger truck in the south bay. it shows the area where we're seeing slowing, a minor crash on 101. the commute, as you see overall looks great. the heavier rain, b over here a crash still blocking one lane with crews on scene. south 101 at spencer where the rain is hitting. we're tracking your commute so far. a lighter than average backup at the bay bridge as well. trance it agencies are not showing any delays. the ferry system included. as the morning continues, likely slow down the b.a.r.t. system for safety reasons. they slow it down when the rails are wet. let's go live to "today in the bay's" pete suratos. how is it looking there, pete? >> good morning, laura. we move from petaluma to mill valley. this is the area of the park and ride that's prone to flooding.

you see they have the observe no parking signs because of the issue if it starts raining. this is the area we're talking about that's subject to flooding. we'll show you some of that flooding. over in windsor you see the rain and wind whipping down in that area. another part of the north bay. as i mentioned, when we were driving down 101 to petaluma, you saw the rain pick up from petaluma to about san rafael, then they tapered off once we got here. for folks driving this morning with the morning commute and the rain. of course, you want to take your time, be cautious on the slippery road, especially with hydroplaning being a big issue. we talked to chp about it. here is what they had to say. >> we saw that a few weeks ago, beginning of october when we had decent rainfall in the north bay. the chp was going from call to call all day long. you can see it firsthand, people weren't slowing down, people weren't following at a safe enough distance. when you get the first rains of

the season, you really have to back it off. that's one of the most dangerous times. >> reporter: as the rain picks up, you will see flooding. depending on the volume of rain this area. chp says they won't add more personnel as a result of the storm but they land to be more visible in an attempt to hopefully slow down drivers. live in mill valley, pete suratos, "today in the bay." now to concerns along our coastline this morning. dangerous conditions setting in as we take a live look at pacifi pacifica. people are worried about more erosion from all this wet weather. whipping waves are already pounding the coast right now. we'll have more on this story in our next half hour as well. "today in the bay's" bob redell will join us with a live update at 6:35. look how different the south bay is, laura. it remains dry at this hour, but the rain is coming. that's making many people living in the santa cruz mountains nervous. homeowners in the burned out

area of the recent loma wildfire have big concerns with the coming storm because that area will now be more prone to erosion and you'll have mudslides. cal fire specialists this week have been surveying the properties around the fire zone. heavy rainfall could leave some of the homes standing in danger with the potential of that big slide. >> it could be several feet. we don't know exactly how deep it would be. it would certainly 'em vaet the streamflow in the channels to the point where it could damage structures. >> could it damage a house or out building? >> absolutely. >> did you see any that you think are at risk? >> yes, we did. >> since the loma fire was contained, cal fire teams have been trying to shore up burned out land. the fear is they need more time. we'll have live team coverage throughout this newscast and indeed all day. of course online as well. i've been talking about that nbc bay area app. you can get weather alerts that will alert you right on your phone.

breaking news in the sierra, a wildfire in the tahoe basin, just getting the first videos from that area. video just taken moments ago. officials have ordered evacuations of more than 500 homes. there are voluntary evacuations of an additional 500. so far 200 acres are burned. we're told highway 89 is shut down from the plaser county line in tahoe city to south lake tahoe. as we see the big flames there, we'll continue to follow that out of tahoe this morning. more breaking news, this time closer to home in the south bay. fire crews rushed into action putting out a house fire a block away from live oak high school. the fire broke out about 4:00 at the home near hill road and east main. we brought you live coverage of this fire during our 4:30 newscast. investigators say no one has lived in the home for about ten years and it was completely emd

ity. new this morning, a close call for a man in the east bay. the driver of that truck lost control, hit two parked cars and smashed through the garage on lone tree hill in antioch. someone was sitting in the living room when this happened. >> one occupant at the time, the vehicle just missed him. hit a bearing wall. >> the man was hit by flying debris, taken to the hospital, but he's going to be okay. police found the driver sitting in the cab of the truck unhurt. that driver was eventually arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. parents at a south bay ymca on alert after a counselor was arre arrested. taylor smith accused of committing lewd acts with a girl. police say the incident happened last month. the 25-year-old worked at the after-school program at ida price middle school. parents received a letter

yesterday informing them about that arrest. >> you're disgusting when you see it on the news all the time. you're always very cautious and talk to your kid about this kind of stuff. when it happens at a facility where your child is going, it's horrible. >> the district working with san jose police and the ymca during this investigation. a local crime is add tracting national attention. today prosecutors are expecting to announce whether hate crime charges will be filed in the eye vent attack of a circumstancekh man. the suspects are former contractors at the chevron richmond refineriry. so far they're facing charges of felony assault. that could change today. 30 advocacy groups from across the country are calling for harsher charges. decision 2016, democratic presidential nominee hillary clinton wrapping up a whirl wind

day in california. this is video of her on the el loan show. the episode will air at 4:00 this afternoon on nbc bay area. after the taping, clinton attended a private concert where elton john performed. earlier in the day, visiting san francisco as well, where she met with senators barbara boxer and dianne feinstein. clinton promised to stand up for people who she says have been mistreated by trump. >> he has attacked immigrants, african-americans, latinos, people with dikts, pows, muslims and our military which he's called a disaster. >> donald trump meanwhile blasting recent accusations coming out against him. at a rally in florida yesterday, trump told the crowd recent allegations of unwanted sexual advances are nothing more than a smear campaign. >> i never met these people.

i don't even know who they are. they're made up stories filed right before the election, right before the election. >> trump says he has proof of recent accusations that they're lies. he and mike pence are saying those bits of proof will come out today. 6:10 on friday morning. back to our micro climate weather alert as we looked at the golden gate bridge on your left, downtown san jose this morning. you can see the difference of the storm moving in. it is moving in with a force. we just learned there are 8,400 customers without power in richmond this morning because of the storm. meteorologist anthony slaughter tracking it all for us. >> in fact, i just got a twitter comment that the trees are bending over in concord. yes, the winds are really playing a factor here this morning. the rain has yet to come down across parts of the bay area. the heavier stuff across parts of the northern part of the bay. we have storm ranger fired up this morning, in fact, bringing

higher resolutions. you can see the light rain across the south bay. the heavier rain in the north bay. i want to focus on the south bay. very light raindrops here across the east bay near alum rock near evergreen and downtown near 87, 101, near the airport. it works its way towards sunnyvale. that's the light rain we're dealing with now. the heavier rain making its way through the north bay right now. just north of santa rosa near ukiah, 101, that stretch seeing pockets of heavy rain. that is what will advance towards san francisco, the east bey and the south bay as we head towards lunchtime. the futurecast will show you this is 6:30 in the morn. a lot of that across parts of the north bay. it's not until 8:00 we see it push into san francisco. by 9:00, 10:00 we'll see widespread rain across the south bay. tours today staying cool, only mid 60s for daytime highs. we'll talk about round two that heads our way for tomorrow. in the meantime, let's toss things over to mike and track

the morning commute. >> we have a lighter volume for friday, folks. that means a later kick-in for the commute volume. that's right when the rain kicks in. maybe leave early on this friday. so far, so good for most of the south bay and the peninsula. the rain coming in from san jose, we'll look for reports of spin-outs. we have a single car crash which leaves two lanes blocked, southbound 101 in sausalito around the spencer avenue bus pad there. i borrowed anthony's radar to put it on our map as well, rain out of the north bay around the same area. the fifth street off-ramp off the bay bridge. we see slowing coming into the city as well and also coming into the area. you're doing great for the upper eastshore freeway. 17 minutes down to the bay bridge. >> one of the bay areas high profile murder cases. the next step in the criminal case against the man accused of kidnapping and

just using as the storm comes in. much more live coverage of this morning's wet weather coming up in just a few minutes. it is '6:16 on friday morning. family, friends and those who searched for sierra lamar for more than four years say the quest for justice in her disappearance starts monday. that's when jury selection finally begins in the murder trial for garcia torres, the man accused of kidnapping and killing the teenager in march of 2012. her body was never found. prosecutors say they linked garcia torres to lamar's disappearance through dna evidence found in his car. three men in custody in connection with a deadly shooting in richmond. police arrested 19-year-old richard taylor, 22-year-old anthony tolliver and 19-year-old karmeni eli. investigators haven't said who they believe opened fire, but weapons have been recovered. one man died and a second man

injured. investigators believe the shooting was tied to a drug d l deal. a plan to build an 11-story hotel is reportedly getting resistance from people who live nearby. developers want to build the hotel across the street from west field valley fair mall. it would be located at south clover avenue. at a planning meeting last week critics voiced opposition, concerned about a spike in traffic, fewer parking spaces and the size of the hotel. if city leaders approve it, construction may start by next summer. 6:17. honda this morning recalling 350,000 civics. the recall is for the two-door and sedans manufactured this year. honda will let you know next month if your car is affected. hewlett packard says it will

cut 3,000 to 4,000 jobs over the next three years. the company says the move is to cope with the slumping demand for desk top computers and printers. verizon waving a red flag. verizon hints it could shelf plans to buy yahoo! for $5 billion. verizon says the announcement that yahoo! suffered a massive hack attack makes the web giant a lot less attractive to purcha purchase. palo alto hul lert packard, 3,000 to 4,000 jobs over the next three years. the company's chief officer admitting demand form desk top computers is falling. more than $5,000. that's how much money "nbc bay area responds" helped return to viewers like you. chris chmura has a look at the

across the bay area. that's what you'll notice if you step outside. we have yet to see heavy rain, but it is falling across parts of the north bay. here is our storm ranger new to nbc. you may turn on the tv. that is our new radar. in fact, it is exclusive to nbc and it has some of the finest resolution data you'll find in radar tracking, and it scans seven times faster than any of the national weather service radar. we have a little bit of a operator this morning as we're doing tracking. this storm system has yet to move in, you can see the moisture across the coast. the storm door opening up right now. there's our storm ranger sitting on mt. allison. it's about 2,600 feet in the atmosphere. as i mentioned, bringing some of

the finest resolution and radar tracking. we've got some of the light showers starting to show up on our radar site here across the south bay. again, a lot of it is light. that's the mist and drizzle making its way towards the south bay and also the sunol grade. the heavier rain is across parts of the north bay. look at the yellows and reds, just north of ukiah, expected to work its way through the north bay in the next couple hours. here is the futurecast. you'll notice futurecast by 8:30 still shows some rain making its way into san francisco. a lot of it across parts of the north bay. not until 9:00, 10:00 when we see it towards the east bay, stretching to the south bay as well. the yellows and oranges you see, that denotes heavier rain which could lead to pondings on the roadway. about 3:00 this afternoon, that's when we'll see a lot of it towards the south bay as we head towards 5:00 and 6:00. here are your numbers.

high temperatures will be cool, only talking mid 60s for daytime highs. that rain will work its way from the north bay into the south bay. if you look close, mike, you can see raindrops on that north bay cam. we've already gone wet roads there. >> we've had a couple of incidents. chp report does not say it's because of weather, but the conditions may make that one of the factors. is minor crash at ralston. we saw some mist and drizzle there. over here, this is just a crash involving five or six vehicles. we see a pretty typical pattern slowing toward the city. we will track that as that rain comes down and the other crash i wasusalito, south 101 around the spencer bus pad, it may have cleared lanes. a look at the bay bridge toll plaza, we have your backup.

without voting on the l ves welcome back. the fate of the raiders is up in the air after nevada lawmakers recessed a short time ago without voting on a new stadium plan in las vegas. senators have already approved the deal which would fund a new $2 billion stadium for the raiders, but the assembly, not so much. they debated well past midnight leaving lawmakers to tell the los angeles review journal they believe the resolution has the minimum number of votes to pass, but they went home without voting. the assembly's special session resumes this morning at 9:00. hoping to rebuild their church, a berkeley congregation is holding a fund-raising concert next tuesday. a fire ripped through the church last month. the community says the church that burned down has been very helpful to musicians in the place providing them a place to practice or hold concerts. a campus alert coming up

see coming down across parts of the north bay. storm ranger fired up. you see from that radar scan we have yet to see rain in the east bay where the power outages are. that's a result of wind. that is something you'll feel when you step out the door this morning, even in san jose this morning, we've had gusts up to 25 miles per hour. that's just with dry skies. you'll notice as i mentioned storm ranger fired up, it brings you the highest resolution and radar tracking. there you can see across parts of the south bay we're looking at light stuff. that extends over towards the santa cruz mountains. the heavier rain, what we're waiting on, the main brunt of the showers will push through. that's still across parts of the north bay. we'll time out the rain for you to your doorstep. we'll let you know about the other round heading our way tomorrow. in the meantime, let's get you to work on time. good morning, anthony. the wind is a good note for the east bay. our bridges across the north bay as well.

not seeing major issues. we see it build toward the san mateo bridge. the bay bridge we have a crash, one lane blocked eastbound. commute is slow toward treasure island. chp trying to clear the scene as quickly as possible. the rain coming down from the north. you see the highlighting, the green and the yellow. that's where there was rain and heavier puddling on the roadway throughout portions of 101, even a rock slide up in santa rosa. keep in mind the build is light for the upper eastshore freeway. a crash on 24 coming up. the thick of it is in the north bay. that's where we sent nbc bay area's pete suratos. he's in mill valley. how is it looking there? >> good morning, scott. the showers have been on and off for the next couple hours. we're at the park and ride which is prone to flooding.

as you see, it says there's no parking in certain areas. i want to show you areas where there wouldn't be parking if there's flooding. that area is sectioned off. we want to go to video from early this morning. that's when the rain and wind was coming down, another part of the north bay. we saw that rain pick up where it originally started. it was from there to about san rafael. for folks driving this morning, chp has a simple message. they want you to slow down and be a cautious driver. yes had a clans to talk to them about this. here is what they had to say. >> it's dangerous enough as it is. but when you add the wet roads, average car of 60 miles per hour. you add the rain to that, it will take a little longer. if your eyes aren't on the road where they're supposed to be, it's a dangerous. >> reporter: chp says they don't plan on adding more personnel as a result of this storm, but they plan on being more visible on

the highway to hopefully slow down drivers. live in mill valley, pete suratos, "today in the bay." >> in the peninsula, all the wet weather to come, causing big concern for people in pacifica already living on the edge. you'll recall this dramatic drone video of a crumbling cliffside earlier this year. now crews are hoping this doesn't happen again. "today in the bay's" bob redell is in pacifica. good morning. >> reporter: scott and laura, we've seen strong sustained winds at least for the past two hours by the pacifica pier and the relatively large waves which is why the national weather service issued a high surf advisory from the north bay down the south bay along the shoreline. they're predicting waves 14 to 16 feet. this being the first big storm of the season. people who live here in pacifica are worried about what the large swells will do.

drone footage shows the erosion from about a year ago. you might recall one apartment complex was red tagged last winter and evacuated as it teeters on the edge. another was taken down by the owners. the beach city workers fixed fixing the promenade damaged by last year's el nino storm. the city council voted unanimously to spend $3 million for another dozen repair projects. >> look for the funding, go for the grants. we have to worry a great deal about our city infrastructure for one and the safety an health of our citizens. >> reporter: the city of pacifica still needs to fix part of the seawall damaged. the plan is to partner with the u.s. army corps of engineers to get that done. reporting live along the pacifica shoreline where we're seeing large waves this morning, bob redell, "today in the bay." a very close call for a man in the east bay. take a look at this video.

the driver of that truck lost control, hit two parked cars and smashed through the garage of this home on lone tree way in antioch. there was a man inside the home just sitting in his living room when all this happened. he was hit by flying debris and taken to the hospital for treatment. he'll be okay. police found the driver sitting in the cab of the truck unhurt. he was eventually arrested on suspicion of drunk driving. 6:36 right now. people who live around uc berkeley have been warned about a string of armed burglaries. in at least five cases a man with a gun targeted victims who were walking down the street. one case involved two armed men targeting three women. investigators say the suspect's descriptions are similar for each crime. the father of a 2-year-old boy who died one week ago after a pleasanton hospital is being sought by police. he's considered a person of interest in the death of his own

son. the boy lived in stockton. investigators believe the boy suffered the injuries in stockton. family members brought him to the pleasanton hospital where he died. police are calling this death a homicide. >> very sad. 6:37 right now. santa clara university leaders looking into two acts of vandalism at a residence hall. in one case someone broet hateful messages on a bulletin board targeting the lgbtq company. in another case a swastika was drawn using blood. it's not clear if the acts are connected. campus safety officers are reviewing the incident and surveillance images to try to track down the vandals. new details to tell you about in the south bay prostitution string nbc bap area first showed you exclusively tuesday night. members of a federal task force set up fake meetings with prostitutes and johns looking for possible human trafficking victims. now authorities tell us one of the men arrested in the sting dropped off an underage girl at

the hotel with the intention of selling her for sex. the 25-year-old is accused ofd exploiting a minor. he's being held on $250,000 bail. 6:38. pulled from the waters of san francisco bay, yesterday this yacht was brought up in the bottom of the bay. last weekend the capsized yacht caused quite a scare. this is cell phone video of the dramatic scene. everybody was arrested including a 4-year-old child. boating experts believe the yacht was overloaded. back to our weather alert coverage this morning. let's take a live look outside overlooking downtown san jose. pretty dry so far right now in the south bay, but it's all changing. all this looming wet weather is causing problems. >> victims of the loma fire are

worried about their own homes once again. >> reporter: they thought it was all over and here they go again. more headaches again, not so long after the flames and those evacuations were lifted for the loma fire in front of the cal fire sign if things go real bad, we start to get precipitation, you'll see this driveway here. it will be filled with fire trucks going in and out of this location. a lot of the homes they went to try to save there in the loma fire, they now could be at risk of mudslides. that's if the rain does come this way. if expected, that major downflow could put several homes into jeopar jeopardy. cal fire surveyed about 20 homes, in a third of the fire zone, homeowners say they've lived there for over a decade. they're still seeing a few hot spots. they hope the pile of ash left behind by that loma fire doesn't cause hillsides to fall.

the heavier rain, the brunt of the rain is across parts of the north bay, from eureka towards ukiah, santa rosa. a lot of the light green is light rain. some of the yellows and oranges, that denotes pockets of heavy rain. you'll notice by even 9:00 that's when the first heavy rains will start to push into san francisco. even over by oakland. we're expecting widespread rain from about 10:00, 11:00. it looks like from the latest runs that each and every model update, it slows the rain down. so even by 1:00, 2:00, we'll have widespread rain through most of the bay area. it's not until the evening rush hour do we start to wind down with the rain. it's again until about 5:00 or 6:00. highs today will be cool. talking mid 60s. keep the jackets handy. let's toss over to mike and track the morning commute. >> good morning for the rain to come in because friday has a lighter volume of traffic. we still see our slowing. in the south bay, nothing unusual about the pattern or the

and it is right here in the bay area this morning. what it does, it brings some of the finest resolution and radar tracking and some of the fastest resolutions when it comes to the scan across the sky. you can see we've got it fired up on mount allison in fremont, about 2600 feet up in the air. there is the rain on the radar traveling through the north bay right now, even light stuff across the santa cruz mountains. we'll give you a full report and let you know when round two arrives tomorrow. that's coming up in my full forecast. >> all right, thank you anthony. the same storm system has been wreaking havoc in oregon and washington state. >> there you can hear it. wind gusts peaking at 100 miles an hour, knocking down trees and power lines. coastal towns in oregon are still without power. in washington state the rain is a bigger issue. people in seattle being asked to

stay out of city parks because of the flooding. a two-day summit begins today in san francisco on marijuana. it will feature cannabis industry leaders and speakers from all areas of the cannabis world including health, science, technology, investment and retail. it kicks off at the hyatt regency hotel at embarcadero center. teachers in alum rock are making their frustrations known. dozens of teachers and their supporters protested ahead of last night's school board meeting. they say no progress is being made in contract negotiations. the president of the teachers association say they have several concerns and their needs must be met. >> we are trying to bargain for lower class size in our k-3 and an increase in our salary and medical benefits. >> the teachers association says their pay is among the lowest in

that may keep some folks at home so the roads may not be that bad. we've got radar fired up, our storm ranger in place. it's bringing you some of the finest resolution when it comes to radar tracking this morning. you can see that being picked up across the south bay. that's where we're seeing sprinkle, mist activity, enough to get the ground wet. make sure you dress the kids with maybe a hood to throw over their head, because it is going to start raining momentarily across the south bay. across the north bay it's already been raining. santa rosa has already picked up close to .25 inch with spotty rain across the north bay. that's going to continue to be the case until about 8:00 this morning. wins we hit about 9:00, we'll see it push into san francisco, towards the east bay as well. i'm talking the heavy rain that is expected to create the ponding on the roadways. this will be about 11:00, widespread rain for most of the bay area. the computer models have slowed this down a bit.

by 1:00, 2:00, still dealing with widespread rain from the east bay through the peninsula and even the south bay. this is 5:00 this evening, and you'll notice still, showers across parts of san jose, near 101, gilroy, morgan hill and the santa cruz mountains. we have all day to deal with the showery activity. while it might not be raining yet, we're watching the rain push in. you can see our cameras dealing with issues, we've raindrops on the lens there in the north bay. friends going across the golden gate bridge may have to use the windshield wipeers. we have another round headed our way as we head towards tomorrow. this is futurecast for tomorrow. 6:00 in the evening tomorrow's rain will be an evening rain, and that's going to come through primarily once the suns goes down. here is 9:00 tomorrow evening. that will be with us as we head towards sunday. rainfall amounts from the first batch will be pretty decent. the south bay won't see much.

maybe .10 inch. the north bay, oakland, san francisco looking at decent rainfall amounts, maybe more than an inch in some spots. rebounding nicely for next week, back into the 80s. let's switch gears and talk to mike. >> good morning, anthony. you're talking about wind. the east bay hills had reports of gusts of wind, power outages in richmond. no delays for any transit systems going through that area. we have a delay for southbound 101 right by the sausalito bus pad. that crash still blocks one lane, so it is a slower drive. anthony is talking about missed and drizzle. we saw rain farther north coming into the rest of the bay area. a smoother drive toward the bay bridge and a nice flow of traffic through the upper eastshore freeway. on the peninsula, more cars but still holding steady from airport boulevard down past 92, only six minutes. at the limit there south of the san mateo bridge. we have a smooth flow of traffic on the splij westbound, showing

my lochs of hair are blowing about, very windy out here. the past 2 1/2 hours, we've seen the wind speeds pick up, very gusty, sustained. you can see the waves. the national weather service, it's no wonder they've issued a high surf advisory and coastal flood advisory from point reyes to pacifica, all the way south to big sur, predicting waves of 14 to 16 feet. by my estimate, it looks like they've already hit those heights. there is concern in the city of pacifica a little north of here where you have the cliffsides that there will be serious erosi erosion, something we've seen n from storms in months past. we have breaking news in the sierras. the so-called emerald fire is burning in the tahoe basin. we just received this new video within the last hour or so. officials say at least 500 homes are being evacuated. so far 200 acres have burned. we are told highway 89 is shut
