while there's some resistance, it seems some progress is being made. >> reporter: it's kind of a holding pattern that we're seeing today. this is something we need to get used to. the fact of the matter is this battle is likely going to play out the way past battles have played out. the iraqi security forces plan to approach mosul, which is the second largest city in iraq, with a siege mentality. they're going to encircle it and wait for the proper moment to try to penetrate into the isis defenses in order to reach the center of the city and liberate it. now, this is how it's played out again in fallujah and in ramadi in past battles. this can spare some of the iraqi security forces who are trying to lay siege to mosul, but it can extend the battle for weeks or months, and it can extend the agony of the 1.2 million civilians currently in the city. now, i want to put some of the victories from yesterday in perspective. the u.s. government and iraqis

are both saying the villages seized by the peshmerga and iraqi troops were ahead of schedule, but let's make sure we're clear. they were largely uninhabited by civilians and that's not what we'll see when they start to move into mosul. the 1.2 million civilians are still there. >> we may not see the impact of the advances until well after. matt, thank you. emotions were raw in the town of lexington, kentucky, as thousands gathered to honor the slain daughter of olympic hero tyson gay. both trinity and her father excelled in athletics. the crowd was dressed in trinity's favorite colors. you see them releasing a sea of pink and purple balloons in the air. she was shot outside a restaurant. it's believed she was an innocent bystander caught in the cross fire. three men have been charged in connection with the shooting, all of who have pleaded not guilty. their court date is set for next

overseas this morning, new and shocking image coming out of syria, a video showing a boy hanging from a side of a building that had just been hit by an air strike in aleppo. his legs are pinned in the rubble. look at his shirt, it reads don't shoot. rescuers were able to free him, carrying him down to safety. a florida man who shot at george zimmerman's vehicle has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. 38-year-old matthew apperson was convicted last month of charges including attempted second degree murder and armed aggravated assault. he claims he acted in self-defense after zimmerman pointed a gun at him first, a claim zimmerman denies. zimmerman was acquitted of
